Biographies
Marques Carroll
Marques Carroll is a Chicago-based trumpeter and educator who for the past 25 years has been an active member in the musical community. A former member of the legendary Count Basie Orchestra, Marques Carroll also leads his own Jazz Quintet and has now released his second album, Foundations. His first album, The Ancestors’ Call was considered for a Grammy Nomination bid for best Jazz Album of the year in 2021. He is also the co-leader of the Chicago Soul Jazz Collective and cofounder of JMarq Records. Marques is passionate about performing and creating music but he is also passionate about music education as well. Carroll is in his 16th year as the performing arts director for Chicago Jesuit Academy, a private non-profit middle school in the neighborhood of Austin. He works with the Jazz Institute periodically working as a clinician in Chicago public schools and worked 16 years as the Jazz trumpet instructor for the New Trier High School Jazz Department. Carroll is active nationally as a guest clinician and a newly signed artist with the Bach Conn-Selmer company.
Chris Madsen
Dr. Christopher Madsen’s credits as a saxophonist include performances and recordings with Paul Simon, Wynton Marsalis, Jeff Hamilton, Makaya McCraven, Michael Dease, Ulysses Owens, Ben Williams, Marquis Hill, Jon Irabagon, and countless others. He is a published composer with Kendor Music, Inc., the UNC Jazz Press, and Walrus Music. From 2008 to 2014, he served as Jazz Studies Coordinator for Northwestern University and is currently Jazz Studies faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A graduate of the Juilliard, DePaul University, and University of Illinois music schools, Madsen is also a Vandoren and Conn-Selmer artist and member of the College Music Society, NAfME, National Educator’s Association, and JEN. He has presented clinics, conducted ensembles, and performed around the U.S. and the world. He is one of the most in-demand and versatile saxophonists in Chicago, maintaining an active performance schedule and private studio. For more information, visit www.chrismadsen.net
