Non-official Research Master’s Degree Programmes From an academic perspective it is important to highlight the non-official Master’s research degrees that serve as stepping-stones to doctorate degrees. These Master’s degrees are listed below:

16

RESEARCH

Non-official Master’s Degree in Human, Social and Legal Sciences The main objective of this research Master’s programme is to provide comprehensive training. It aims to go beyond the specialization and division of social, historical, political and economic phenomena by searching for their interdependence and connection with different sciences that can explain them from an integrating humanist perspective. The programme is unique in that it offers training in the methodological tools needed to do research in six different specializations: humanities, legal sciences, criminology, business, communication and education. This objective is achieved through a group of core subjects which provide students with the common shared methodological tools in all their fields and elective credits in each of the specializations. Once the Master’s degree has been completed, students can begin working on their doctoral thesis in any of the six specializations. Official Master’s Degree in Basic Research into Dentistry and Biomedicine

Official Master’s Degree in Nursing Sciences The official Master’s programme in Nursing Sciences is an inter-university programme conducted through an integrated network of eight universities in Spain and one in Belgium. The aim of the programme is to train researchers and specialists in nursing sciences to be able to undertake research that can expand their general knowledge of the social, cultural, political and psychological issues of providing healthcare to individuals, families and communities within the different dynamics of healthcare systems. The overall objective of the programme is to provide a level of training that brings health services and quality of life in line with the demands of the 21st century. In particular, it aims to provide new theoretical and methodological tools for healthcare in a complex, changing society, while at the same time

17

ENG

This programme equips dentistry and general healthcare professionals with greater knowledge of techniques in molecular biology, cell and tissue cultivation, microbiology, genomics, immunology and statistics, among other subjects. The objective is to enable these professionals to tackle and find solutions to health problems through research. Students participate in scientific conferences and publish their results in high-impact publications. This gives them prestige and helps them become experts in their field of study and contribute to the development of new therapeutic techniques and the improvement of medical care. Other career paths include providing consulting services on the research and development of new products in business and industry, specialized sales and university lecturing.

contributing to the improvement of all aspects of people’s health and quality of life (biological, social and psychological). After completing this Master’s degree, students can write a doctoral thesis and earn a doctorate degree. Non-official Master’s Degree in Biodigital Architecture This degree is offered within the UIC’s line of research into Genetic Architecture. The postgraduate programme combines an understanding of new digital cybernetics design with new environmental and ecological design. The programme focuses primarily on the role played by new digital systems in the project-design process. Its theoretical and practical approach will place special emphasis on the study of genetic and generative design in the development of projects. The Master’s programme will pursue the idea of morphogenesis and experiment with genetically driven software, develop specific grammars to create formal systems and study evolutionary processes and emerging systems. New technologies lead to new production processes (data-driven production, CNC), which in turn lead to non-standard architectural procedures that are closer to the logic of genes (variation, mutation) than that of industrialized mass production.

RESEARCH

Research Institutes Institute of Advanced Family Studies (IESF) Family policies are of key importance, which is why they are studied all across Europe. Many European countries have renowned research organizations and institutes doing work in the area of family studies, and these bodies have a great deal of influence on setting policies directed towards the family at the local, national and international levels. Through its work, the IESF provides the rigorous collaboration and scientific and interdisciplinary support needed by social agents (public administrations, trade unions, companies, associations and non-governmental organizations) to create and develop policies that impact upon families. Institute of Advanced Bioethics Studies

ENG

The Institute of Advanced Bioethics Studies is a multidisciplinary research, teaching and dissemination centre linked to the faculties of Humanities, Law and Health Sciences. It was created with the aim of contributing to the development of the bioethics debate based on the principles of personalism. social events. The Service aims to offer a wide variety of activities and services that make the UIC experience as rich, useful and enjoyable as possible. The Student and Sports Service also manages advertisements for flats, residences and general accommodation, with the aim of helping new students find a place to live in Barcelona or the outlying area. The Service is also responsible for managing scholarships, of which there are different kinds: in academic year 2007-2008,94 students benefited from financial aid given by the UIC; 60 students were awarded research grants; 32 students from outside Catalonia received financial aid from the Spanish Ministry of Education, Social Policy and Sport; and 153 students living in Catalonia received scholarships from the Agency for Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR). The Service also provides information on the different enrolment discounts. In academic year 2007-2008 discounts and scholarships worth a total of over one million euros were awarded.

30

SERVICES

Through its Student and Sports Service, the UIC fosters participation in the cultural events organized by the Service and sports activities at the professional and amateur levels. The cultural events coordinated by the Service include the organization of a theatre and choir, the organization of a poetry, prose, music and photography competition on St. George’s Day (23 April) that is open to secondary-school students and all UIC students, and the thematic events Cinema Week, Solidarity Week and Culture Week.

Academic and Professional Orientation Service (SOAP) The UIC is not only committed to giving its students the best possible academic education but also supplies them with the best tools available to help them enter the job market.

One of the most important activities organized by the Service in academic year 2007-2008 was the 5th edition of University-Business Career Day, which took place on 25 January 2008. University-Business Career Day is an event organized for students in their last year at university who will soon be embarking upon a career. The event featured around 20 practical activities for students to participate in, including roundtable meetings, informal discussions, presentations on companies and recruitment processes. The aim of these activities was to give students guidance regarding their future careers and familiarize them with the reality of the job market. A total of around 50 companies and organizations participated in the 5th edition of University-Business Career Day. The event was inaugurated in the Graduate Hall by Carles Trenchs Saiz de la Maza, the Director of Investments at Caixa Capital Risc and Head of the Entrepreneur XXI programme. Other notable activities in academic year 2007-2008 included the Seminar on University Learning Methods, which was designed for students in their first year at the UIC, and the Seminar on Strategies for First Jobs, which was designed for students in their final year of study.

31

ENG

To achieve this objective, the UIC set up the Academic and Professional Orientation Service (SOAP), which is responsible for making the necessary human and technical resources available to current and former students to better equip them for when they start looking for their first job or a better job.

UIC Courses, Academic Year 2007-2008

International Relations Service One of the things that sets the UIC apart is the importance it gives to the international nature of its teaching, research and student body. This international approach improves the quality of programmes and research projects, promotes a spirit of collaboration in communication and enriches the perspectives and horizons of UIC students, professors and researchers. The International Relations Service develops this international dimension through its work in four key areas: 1. Bilateral international agreements between the UIC and foreign educational institutions. 2. Communication between faculties within the UIC regarding any activity of an international nature that a faculty, school or research centre is involved in. 3. Programmes involving international exchanges designed for students, professors and researchers. 4. Developing and organizing new programmes that creates links between the UIC and the international community. The total number of foreign students enrolled in academic year 2007-2008 was 636. This figure represents approximately 13% of the total number of UIC students. 104 foreign students were enrolled in undergraduate programmes and 278 enrolled in postgraduate programmes (88 in Master’s degree programmes and 54 in doctorate degree programmes). The rest participated in special courses, conferences and symposia. Besides Latin American countries, those with the highest number of representatives were Italy, France and Greece.

IT Service Each UIC campus has a number of computer rooms in which students can work, browse the Internet, send and receive emails and use all the programs made available to them by the UIC. Once students have enrolled, they become users of the UIC computer network and receive their own email address. Through this system, students are always able to connect to the network, whether through the Service’s own computers or their own laptop connected to one of the many laptop points distributed across the campus. Students can also use the system to access the UIC’s intranet, on which they can find additional information on the classes they are taking. The IT Service makes a number of computer rooms available to students. These rooms can be used for classes and as spaces to work and carry out activities organized by different faculties.

Association of UIC Alumni and Friends (4A’s) The UIC is a young university that was set up more than 25 years ago as part of a project promoted by individuals and supported by the Catalan Family Foundation. The Fert School and the Institute for Legal and Economic Studies (INEDE), among others, were the direct predecessors of today’s UIC.

As a result of this evolution and the persistence of alumni, the Association of UIC Alumni and Friends was created in July 2000. The 4A’s is a non-profit organization set up to foster the desire for closer relations held by many people who wished to help promote social, cultural and scientific activities. The 4A’s also aims to promote, support and participate in the UIC’s activities (members of the 4A’s enjoy certain benefits regarding UIC courses, programmes and activities), maintain and foster professional and social relations between alumni, and organized courses, conferences and other events that are of education and social interest to all its members. During academic year 2007-2008 the 4A’s organized a variety of activities designed to bring alumni together, including a conference in the main lecture hall led by Alessandra Borghese on Tras las huellas de Ratzinger (In the Footsteps of Joseph Ratzinger). Moreover, the UIC Choir, along with the Ars Animae Chamber Choir and the Universitat de Barcelona Choir, performed at the Christmas Concert, which takes place every year in December and is organized by the 4A’s.

Chaplaincy Service The UIC chaplaincy offers a space that is open to everyone for reflection and dialogue in the context of Christian humanism. The chaplaincies on the Barcelona and Sant Cugat campuses promote different activities that are open everyone wishing to participate. The chaplaincy also cooperates with different solidarity and aid projects that are targeted at the needy. These projects include helping senior citizens, fooddonation campaigns, humanitarian aid and other volunteering and social cooperation activities.

University Dental Clinic (CUO) To ensure that students acquire the best technical skills for the profile and skills they need to obtain, the Faculty of Health Sciences has it own University Dental Clinic equipped with state-of-the-art technology and all the necessary equipment. The CUO is a teaching unit that is used for the Undergraduate Degree in Dentistry and has two basic objectives: to complete the training and professional preparation of undergraduate and graduate students, and to offer dental treatment to patients.

UIC Courses, Academic Year 2007-2008

The key objectives of the CUO are, therefore, those of the UIC: teaching and research. Undergraduate and postgraduate dentistry students earn credits at the CUO that count towards their degrees, and undertake clinical research relating to their studies. Besides having adequate facilities for student internships (53 treatment rooms and 2 clinical labs with 60 workstations), the CUO boasts quality instructors that help teach, educate and train students. All the work and surgery done by students on patients is assessed. The CUO’s teaching and treatment quality is enhanced by the fact that its activities take place in latest-generation facilities using state-of-the-art dental equipment supplied by leading companies. More than 28,000 patients have been treated at the CUO. Throughout academic year 2007-2008 almost 3,500 new patients were treated at the clinic. In academic year 2007-2008, 200 undergraduate students completed a total of 2,400 hours of internship work per week at the CUO, and 134 postgraduates did a total of 2,840 hours per week at the clinic. Also worth mentioning were the 200 students who participated in different continuous-education activities and the clinical work they carried out, which also contributed to the clinical research done at the CUO.
