Message From The Head Dear Colleagues and Friends of Pharmacy Practice, I’m pleased to share with you our Residency Programs’ Annual Report and give you a glimpse of our exceptional training opportunities and resident accomplishments at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Pharmacy. The UIC College of Pharmacy has a rich history of defining and advancing the practice of pharmacy. Our clinical and practice-based service programs span over our 2 campuses in Chicago and Rockford and surrounding areas; and we have over 150 faculty practitioners in nearly all inpatient and primary care clinical and service specialties. We embrace an inventive forward-thinking mindset in service and patient care and provide one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive pharmacy practice programs. The magnitude and quality of our clinical pharmacy and service programs create opportunities for residency training experiences not available elsewhere. Running for more than five decades, UIC’s residency programs stand among the nation’s most prominent and distinguished and train around 35-40 residents each year in general pharmacy practice and several specialty areas. Our residents are given independent experiences so they can practice autonomously and develop a sense of responsibility as clinical professionals. This focus, a hallmark of the UIC program, not only equips trainees with robust and relevant clinical skills, but also ensures our residency retains its standing as a cutting-edge program that prepares the future generation of leaders and change agents in pharmacy and health care.

The 2022-2023 residency year was another great one for the Department of Pharmacy Practice at UIC! Our residents continued their significant contributions to our education, research, service, and entrepreneurship mission. A few notable accomplishments this year include: • Our residency programs reached an important milestone in our history when we awarded the 1000th residency completion certificate this year. • Our post-graduate year one (PGY1) Pharmacy residency class had a 91% match rate into post-graduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residencies and fellowships. • The first “Frank P. Paloucek Preceptor of the Year Award” chosen by the PGY1 residency class was awarded to Hailey Soni. • Our Rockford campus graduated its first PGY2 resident in Emergency Medicine and received full accreditation from ASHP. • Our new PGY2 Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency received full accreditation from ASHP and graduated its first resident. • UIC College of Pharmacy and the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital • in Urbana graduated the first official resident in veterinary pharmacy. • Check out the ‘Residents in the News’ Section to read about the many great accomplishments of our residents such as publications, presentations, awards, and much more. These are just a few highlights of the many accomplishments of our program, residency program directors (RPDs) and residents. This success of training future clinical practioners, educators, researchers, scholars, and leaders would not be possible without the dedication of college and departmental leadership, RPDs, and many devoted clinical faculty preceptors.

Pharmacy UIC’s PGY1 pharmacy residency provides training in overall delivery of healthcare with a major emphasis placed on drug-related issues and practices. During this one-year program, the resident effectively makes the transition from student to independent practitioner under guidance from the clinical faculty. The main goals of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program are to develop competent clinical pharmacists capable of practicing in any setting by providing exposure to a diverse scope of pharmaceutical care services while fostering leaders in clinical pharmacy practice and education. The 2022-2023 PGY1 pharmacy residency class had a 91% match rate into post-graduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residencies with our other residents obtaining clinical positions within the Chicagoland area. Our Community Service Committee organized several successful events throughout the year. In the fall, we had a social media Halloween costume contest that raised over 100 books for elementary school students in a local underperforming school. In February, Valentine’s Day cards for a local senior center helped boost spirits and spread love. In the spring, our Mother’s Day clothing drive collected two car-loads full of clothing for a local women’s and children’s shelter with additional items donated to the Community Outreach Intervention Projects (COIP) mobile unit. In the spring, we hosted residents from the University of Michigan for their professional development trip which led to a great exchange of ideas related to residency training and clinical pharmacy practice. At the Residency Certificate Ceremony in June, end-of-the-year awards were given to Dr. Rachel Sickley, PGY1 resident (Richard A. Hutchinson Award for Excellence in Pharmacy Practice); Dr. Emily Hanners, PGY1 resident (John McBride Award for Excellence in Hospital Pharmacy); Dr. Hailey Soni, internal medicine preceptor (Frank P. Paloucek Preceptor of the Year Award); and Elizabeth Modrzyk, Communications and Residency Coordinator (Residency Appreciation Award). Our residency programs reached an important milestone in our history when we awarded the 1000th residency completion certificate this year. In July we welcomed our new 2023-2024 PGY1 class of 12 residents including 2 from UIC, 2 from the University of California San Francisco, and 1 each from University of Colorado Denver, University of Pittsburgh, University of Mississippi, University of Maryland, University of Connecticut, University of Arizona, University of Buffalo, and University of Texas. PGY1 Pharmacy International The PGY1 for international graduates is an ASHP-accredited residency specifically for those international students that have completed an ACPE-accredited PharmD program. The mission of the residency is to foster the growth of clinical pharmacy practice outside of the U.S.

PGY1 PHARMACY INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR
PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy The UIC PGY1 Community-Based Residency prepares graduates to utilize clinical skills to provide exceptional pharmaceutical care for patients in a community pharmacy, develop and implement innovative and sustainable patient care services, and maintain or improve current services. Graduates obtain positions in community, ambulatory care, and academia and commit to the advancement of the profession of pharmacy through continued education and involvement. Residents spend 60% of their time in one of UIC’s cutting-edge outpatient pharmacies and 40% of their time rotating through UIC’s ambulatory care clinics, in addition to developing academic and research skills. UIC’s 2022-2023 PGY1 Community-Based Resident, Dr. Amy Liu, had a productive and successful year. She participated in student precepting and providing patient care at the new Specialty Care Building Pharmacy and several UI Health ambulatory care clinics. Dr. Liu supported the efforts of the Outpatient-Based Clinical Pharmacy Services (OCPS), by providing medication therapy management services to patients through OutcomesMTM®. Dr. Liu incorporated this platform into her research

and looked at how comprehensive medication reviews (CMRs) impact patient outcomes. Dr. Liu will continue to help patients maximize their medication use at UI Health as a clinical pharmacist in SCB.

PGY1 Community-Based Specialty Pharmacy The Community-Based Residency in Specialty Pharmacy is an ASHPaccredited yearlong program with a goal of producing a well-rounded specialty pharmacy practitioner. The resident will learn to manage specialty pharmacy patients by rotating through our URAC and ACHC accredited Clinical Care Center/Specialty Pharmacy and by rotating through several UI Health specialty outpatient clinics. The residents for the 2022-2023 academic year were Matt Baugh and Isabelle To. Both residents successfully completed the program. They supported our specialty pharmacy by participating in the clinical and operational workflows throughout the year. Matt completed a year-long research project where he participated in the development and implementation of a digital patient engagement service for our specialty pharmacy patients. Isabelle completed a year-long research project where she developed and implemented a sickle cell disease clinical dashboard and evaluated its utility in health system specialty pharmacy. The residents presented their research projects at national and regional conferences including poster presentations at the Vizient Annual Pharmacy meeting and the Great Lakes Residency Conference.

PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy - Walgreens The Walgreens-UIC Pharmacy Residency is a 12-month, structured, ASHP accredited PGY-1 Community-Based Program. The residency is based out of three community Walgreens specialty pharmacy locations in Chicago that offer a variety of innovative clinical pharmacy services for the patients who are prescribed complex therapies such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, oncology, and transplant. The residency is offered in partnership with the UIC College of Pharmacy which allows the resident the opportunity to gain experiences in the delivery of clinical pharmacy services in ambulatory care clinics as well as actively participate in teaching and precepting experiences. Our 2022-2023 PGY1 community-based pharmacy resident, Dr. Rachel Kautz, was highly productive over her residency year. She contributed to the community, health system, college, and pharmacy profession through service, research, precepting and teaching activities, and presentations. At the conclusion of the residency year, Dr. Kautz secured a position as a Pharmacist with Walgreens Specialty District 857.

PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy - Osco The Osco (Albertsons)-UIC Pharmacy Residency is a 1 year, ASHP accredited program that has affiliates throughout the country, three being in the Chicagoland area of which one position is associated with the UIC College of Pharmacy. The program focuses on community practice where residents enhance their skills to develop and deliver patient care services, establish programs within corporate and local leadership, and engage with the local university to learn skill sets needed for teaching. The resident also completes clinical experiences in a variety of ambulatory care settings that UI Health has to offer.

Our 2022-2023 PGY community-based resident, Dr. Analisa Iole, a graduate from the University of Iowa, successfully completed her residency program. She completed many projects and started new programs within the Jewel-Osco system, was able to be a primary preceptor for IPPE and APPE students at her community sites, provided a seminar to her colleagues, and led a variety of teaching experiences to students at the college of pharmacy, including monthly morning conference discussions with the fourth-year students on their ambulatory care rotations at UIC.

PGY1 Pharmacy Rockford The UIC College of Pharmacy at Rockford is pleased to offer a oneyear PGY1 pharmacy residency. The program is designed to solidify the skills and knowledge obtained during the PharmD education. By focusing on developing clinical pharmacists prepared to offer medication-related care on multidisciplinary teams, the program provides the advantages of preparation for board certification and PGY2 pharmacy residency training. Under the mentorship and guidance of experienced clinical faculty members, the pharmacy resident will transition from a student to an independent practitioner during the 12-month program. Dr. Tony Rosella completed his PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at UIC College of Pharmacy Rockford on June 30, 2023. He has accepted a position as a Clinical Assistant Professor at UIC College of Pharmacy Rockford. In that role, he will practice as an Ambulatory Care Pharmacist with a focus on Transitions of Care at UI Health Mile Square LP Johnson Family Health Center.

PGY1 UIUC-UIC Veterinary Pharmacy The University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital Clinical Pharmacy Resident is focused on delivery outstanding care, educating future veterinarians and pharmacists, and advancing veterinary pharmacy. Our resident focused on learning from and providing clinical knowledge for a variety of species including small animal, large animal, zoological, and wildlife patients.

Our 2022-2023 resident, Jessica Barazowski, was able to complete the initiation of clinical pharmacy chart review within our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Intermediate Care Unit (IMC). Her research project, which focused on medication errors, was able to provide data displaying the benefit of a veterinary pharmacist on the veterinary team and inform those practicing in veterinary medicine which drugs errors are most likely to occur with. This research provides a path for pharmacists to work with veterinarians to advance veterinary medicine and bridge any existing gaps in patient care.

Residency Programs The UIC College of Pharmacy offers 14 different PGY2 pharmacy residency programs at our Chicago and Rockford campuses. PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build upon skills and competencies from PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. Residents who successfully complete a PGY2 pharmacy residency at UIC are well prepared for practices in advanced patient care, academia, and leadership. In 2022-23, 12 residents completed PGY2 training in one of our programs. Residents had previously completed PGY1 residencies at UIC (3 residents), Amita Health Saint Joseph Medical Center, John H. Stroger, Jr Hospital of Cook County, Loyola University Medical Center, Michigan Medicine/University of Michigan, Mount Sinai Morningside/Mount Sinai West, NorthShore University HealthSystem, Reading Hospital/Tower Health, Rush University Medical Center and University of Chicago Medicine.

PGY2 Ambulatory Care The Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at the UIC College of Pharmacy is a 12-month, structured, ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency. The goal of this residency is to develop expert knowledge and skills in the provision of pharmacotherapy to ambulatory care patients by combining clinical service with educational and scholarly activities. Our 2022-2023 PGY2 ambulatory care residents, Drs. Reham Awad and Mukti Patel, were highly productive over their residency year. They contributed to the college, health system and pharmacy profession through precepting and teaching activities, several presentations and service opportunities, and most importantly, through the provision of high-quality comprehensive medication management for ambulatory care patients served by UI Health. Both Drs. Awad and Patel have sought out positions as ambulatory care clinical pharmacists and will continue to improve the outcomes of patients they serve at various academic medical centers and health systems in Chicago.

PGY2 Cardiology The UIC College of Pharmacy has provided post-doctoral training specializing in the study and treatment of cardiovascular disease for nearly 30 years. Our ASHP-accredited PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency continues that tradition. The goal of this residency is to afford the opportunity to develop expert knowledge and skills in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy through clinical service, education, and scholarly activities. Our 2022-2023 PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Resident, Dr. Jenine Abuzir, was highly productive over her residency year. She completed rotations in various clinical practice settings, including cardiology clinics, hospital floors, and intensive care units. Additionally, Dr. Abuzir served as a preceptor-intraining for several PGY1 Pharmacy Residents and fourth year pharmacy students over the course of her year. Lastly, she delivered several formal presentations and assisted with faculty at the college to facilitate recitations in the cardiovascular therapeutics course. Dr. Abuzir obtained a position as a Cardiology Pulmonary Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner at Edward Hines Veterans Affairs Hospital where she will be starting cardiology and pulmonary pharmacy services.
DR. STEPHANIE DWYER KALUZNA PGY2 CARDIOLOGY DIRECTOR
PGY2 Clinical Pharmacogenomics The jointly sponsored UIC-NorthShore PGY-2 Clinical Pharmacogenomics Residency is a one-year specialty residency to develop expert knowledge and skills in clinical pharmacogenomics by combining clinical service with educational, practice development, and scholarly activities. The UIC-NorthShore program is the nation’s first and only dual-site PGY-2 clinical pharmacogenomics residency program to capitalize on the strengths of two institutions with national reputations in clinical pharmacogenomics practice, implementation, expansion, education, and research. Our program’s patient care mission is to improve health equity and quality by making

PGY2 Critical Care The UIC College of Pharmacy, offers an ASHP-accredited PGY2 Residency in Critical Care Pharmacy. This 12-month program trains residents in the provision, research, and education aspects of adult critical care pharmacotherapy. Residents have a faculty appointment at the College, provide emergency response support at the hospital, and train in various intensive care and emergency medicine units. Graduates of this program serve as clinical specialists, researchers, and academicians across the United States and Canada.
Brooke Smith
Dr. Brooke A. Smith was our resident for 2022-2023. She completed rotations in Neuroscience ICU, Medical/Surgical ICU, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery Units, Trauma ICU, Emergency Medicine, and Infectious Diseases. Her research this year focused on the timing of hydrocortisone discontinuation in patients with septic shock. She delivered a critical care symposium with her fellow PGY2 residents in Cardiology and Emergency Medicine where she debated controversies in the acute treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis and supraventricular tachycardia. She lectured about sedation and analgesia to our Internal Medicine residents and presented her journal club on methylene blue in septic shock to a national audience of members of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She also co-coordinated the Critical Care Elective
in the Spring Semester, providing lectures and case discussions for P3 students. Finally, she served as Member-At-Large of the Residency Advisory Committee of ACCP. Starting in August, Dr. Smith will be a Clinical ICU Specialist at Augusta University Health in Georgia.

PGY2 Drug Information The Drug Information Residency is a 1-year program providing flexibility in training to pursue a career outside traditional hospital-based drug information practice. Our residency alumnae hold prominent positions in areas such as academia, pharmaceutical industry, medical communications, and managed care. The goal of the residency is to enhance the resident’s clinical skills and expertise in efficient retrieval and critical evaluation of the biomedical literature, communication of evidence-based information, medical writing, formulary management/prior authorization, and didactic and experiential teaching. Justyna Fydrych, our 2022-2023 PGY2 drug information resident, completed rotational experiences in Medical Writing, Drug Information Inquiries, Formulary Management, Investigational Drug Services, Medication Safety, Medication Use Policy, Informatics, Poison Information, and Research. Justyna worked on multiple writing and formulary management projects throughout

her year – she completed a medication use evaluation for UI Health on insulin use, assisted in the development of an adverse drug event trigger tool for UI Health, completed class reviews for Pharmacy Benefit Managers, assisted in FAQ articles for the Drug Information Group website, and is submitting articles for publication in the American Journal of Health System Pharmacists and the American Journal of Pharmacy Education, among other projects. Justyna gave multiple lectures to students in the College of Pharmacy for core and elective classes, led 2 recitations, one locally at the UIC College of Pharmacy, and one remotely, in conjunction with the University of Malta, and assisted in precepting APPE students on rotation with the Drug Information Group. She presented an ACPE-accredited live seminar on acetaminophen overdose and the role of fomepizole and an ACCME-accredited online webinar on current management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Additionally, Justyna presented her research project and findings, updated curriculum and instructional methods for drug information, at the Illinois Pharmacy Residency Conference in May 2023.

PGY2 Emergency Medicine The Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency at the UIC College of Pharmacy is a 12-month, structured, ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency. The goal of this residency is to develop expert knowledge and skills in the provision of pharmacotherapy to emergency department patients by combining clinical service with educational and scholarly activities. Our 2022-2023 PGY2 emergency medicine resident, Dr. Tiffany Lin was very productive over the residency year. She contributed to the college, health system and pharmacy profession through precepting and teaching activities, presentations and research, and most importantly, through the provision of high-quality comprehensive medication management for patients served by UI Health. Dr. Lin secured a position as an Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacist starting a new emergency medicine pharmacy service at VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.

PGY2 Emergency Medicine Rockford The residency offers specialty training in emergency medicine and critical care within a community hospital in Rockford, IL. By focusing on developing clinical pharmacists prepared to offer medicationrelated care on multidisciplinary teams, the program provides the advantages of preparation for establishing a new pharmacy service and board certification. Under the mentorship and guidance of experienced clinical faculty members, the pharmacy resident will transition from a PGY1 to an advanced specialty independent practitioner during the 12-month program. The 2022-2023 Emergency Medicine PGY2 UIC COP Rockford Campus Resident, Sarah Stepanek PharmD, completed research on Evaluation of the Antibiotics Spectrum Utilized in Open Fractures at Level 1 Trauma Centers. She presented on Transitioning into the Resident Role and Work Life Balance at the 2022 ICHP Annual Meeting. Lastly, she published “What’s in a Smile? Collaboration between Pharmacists and Dentists” for ICHP KeePosted.

PGY2 HIV The HIV Pharmacy Residency provides training opportunities at several locations including UI Health Outpatient Care Center (OCC), UI Health Community Clinic Network (UCCN), Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) Telemedicine HIV/HCV clinics, John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County, and the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center. PGY2 Infectious Diseases The goal of the program is to provide the incoming resident with opportunities to develop expertise in the practice of infectious diseases pharmacy as a key player in the interdisciplinary ID team. This residency will focus on developing the necessary clinical and didactic teaching, research, antimicrobial stewardship, and skills needed to practice as an independent infectious diseases pharmacist. Upon successful completion of this program, residents will be prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions.

PGY2 Oncology The Oncology PGY2 Residency at the UIC Collge of Pharmacy is a 12-month, ASHP-accredited residency program. The goal is to foster well-rounded and independent clinical pharmacists through clinical service in both inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology settings as well as educational and scholarly activities throughout the year. Our 2022-2023 PGY2 oncology pharmacy resident, Lina Shao, presented her research project evaluating outcomes in patients receiving oral oncolytic therapy when filled at the integrated UI Health Specialty Pharmacy Services compared to an out-of-network payer-preferred specialty pharmacy at the 2023 HOPA annual conference. She presented a continuing education session on Recent Updates in Cancer Drug Development at a regional Advanced Practice Provider Oncology Summit, as well as her seminar presentation No More LAGging, sTIL Making Progress in Melanoma. She also gave lectures in the oncology course and the APPE ambulatory care morning conference. Lina Shao

PGY2 Pediatrics The PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency at UIC focuses on the refinement of clinical skills in order to prepare the resident for a career as a board-certified pediatric clinical pharmacy specialist. The close relationship between the UI Health and the UIC College of Pharmacy also prepares our resident for a position in academia; a unique opportunity not available in most pediatric residencies.

PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant The Solid Organ Transplant (SOT) PGY2 Pharmacy Residency aims to create strong, independent clinical pharmacists by integrating patient care, education, and research into the training experience. Residents will become leaders in management of transplant recipients in all phases of care and play an integral role with transitions of care.

The 2022-2023 SOT PGY2 resident, Annesti Elmasri, developed a confident, independent clinical pharmacy practice through her autonomous weekend transplant ICU coverage and clinical rotations in both the transplant ICU and outpatient transplant clinics. She was an active trainee member of Illinois Transplant Pharmacist Association (ITPA) and provided a case presentation on ABO incompatible liver transplantation as well as an ACPE accredited seminar on the utilization of GLP-1 agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors in kidney transplant recipients. Her research project was accepted as a poster presentation at American Transplant Congress (ATC) Meeting in June 2023. Annesti also gave two lectures in the Transplant Elective and led four recitations at UIC College of Pharmacy in addition to precepting pharmacy students and PGY1 residents throughout her residency training.
These accomplishments are just a few highlights of her contribution to the transplant team, College of Pharmacy, and clinical pharmacy practice at UI Health.

PGY2 Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadreship The Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency at the UIC College of Pharmacy is an ASHP Candidate-Status 12-month PGY2 residency. The goal of this residency is to develop expert knowledge and skills in Specialty Pharmacy administration, management, and leadership by combining clinical service with educational and administrative activities. The 2022-2023 residency year was the inaugural year for the program, and our PGY2 resident was Dr. Michael Eagon. He contributed to the college, health system and pharmacy profession through precepting and teaching activities, multiple presentations, and most importantly, through the management and leadership within the specialty and mail order pharmacies serving patients at UI Health. Dr. Eagon has secured a position as a Senior Pharmacy Manager – Ambulatory Pharmacy at the University of Texas Medical Branch in League City, Texas. In this role, he will be responsible for growing and developing the specialty pharmacy program.

A Pawsitively Purrfect Collaboration Article By Laura Hayes
In July 2022, the UIC College of Pharmacy and the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana welcomed their first official resident in veterinary pharmacy, marking the formalization of a new type of intercampus, interprofessional collaboration that demonstrates the strengths of the University of Illinois System. This residency and partnership were several years in the making and would not have been possible without the work of Dr. Allison Schriever, PharmD ’99, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice and director of experiential education for the college’s Rockford campus. The informal relationship between the college and the veterinary teaching hospital began when Schriever was developing the Rockford campus’s experiential education programs and Rural Pharmacy Education (RPHARM) program. She was hoping to add veterinary pharmacy to the list of educational experiences for UIC PharmD students. “Contact with the veterinary hospital was something that initially happened through my work with RPHARM,” Schriever says. “It just made sense to develop this partnership: the College of Veterinary Medicine, which is one of the best, and the veterinary teaching hospital are part of our University of Illinois System, they service rural communities, and their campus has a large agricultural footprint. Local and National Presentations Dr. Mukti Patel presented at the Endocrine and Metabolism PRN Business Meeting as part of the 2022 American College of Clnical Pharmacy (ACCP) Global Conference: “Putting Some Weight into Diabetes Care: An Update on the ADA/EASD Consensus Report for the Management of Hyperglycemia in Type 2 Diabetes”. The presentation was then encored for the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) Ambulatory Care Network December 2022 meeting.
Dr. Amy Liu presented “Your Meds and You” to the West Suburban Stroke Support Group. She also presented “Comprehensive Medication Reviews and Their Impact on Patient Care” as a poster at APhA Annual, and then as a podium presentation at the Illinois Pharmacy Residency Conference.
Dr. Jessica Barazowski presented two posters at the Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists Annual Conference, one was on methadone vials and hub loss. The other poster was regarding medication errors in the veterinary teaching hospital setting.
Dr. Tiffany Lin debated choice of fluids in adult DKA and adenosine or calcium channel blocker as part of the critical care seminar debates, “A Tale of Three Controversies…”
