Instruction Letter from New Student Orientation Officer 1. Hello! I am Captain Tony Roubal, this year’s New Student Orientation (NSO) officer. We will conduct orientation classes for new students 18 August 2015 through 21 August 2015. Our goal is to acquaint you with the NROTC Unit, develop teamwork, and to provide you with valuable information about both universities so your transition to college and the NROTC program is as smooth as possible. 2. Our main spaces are located on the 2nd deck of Hays Hall on the University of Idaho campus (map included in enclosure 14). Please email ENS Phinney at josiah.phinney@email.wsu.edu and myself at navyrotc@uidaho.edu to provide a working e-mail address so we can provide timely correspondence to everyone if additional information must be passed. Enclosure (2) is a checklist of all forms that pertain to you as well as a checklist for New Student Orientation. 3. All incoming Midshipmen will be assigned a student mentor during the summer prior to the start of orientation. This individual will serve as your primary point of contact in assisting you in preparing for your transition into the NROTC Unit. Your mentor can provide advice from the point of view of someone who has themselves gone through orientation and is a student in our program. 4. All incoming midshipmen are required to stay in their campus (WSU or UI respectively) housing during orientation. Move in dates and times for WSU dorms open anytime starting 15 August 2015 and the UI dorms are open for move-in on Tuesday 18 August between 1400 and 1700. 5. If you are arriving in Moscow or Pullman by commercial bus or airline (at the Moscow/Pullman airport), please indicate your arrival date and time, and whether you will require a ride on enclosure (9). Likewise, if you are flying into either the Lewiston or Spokane airport, please provide your flight information and whether you will require transportation from the airport. Return it in one of the enclosed envelopes no later than 25 July 2015, so we can ensure proper preparations are made for your arrival. If you will be arriving prior to 18 August 2015 you will need to arrange your own accommodations at an area hotel, see enclosure (4). 6. Naval ROTC Orientation will start Tuesday, 18 August 2015, 0800 in the Whitewater/Clearwater room at the Idaho Commons on the University of Idaho campus. Students are required to check in with khaki pants, dress shoes (no high heels), tennis shoes readily available, belt, collared shirt, and must be clean shaven and have a clean haircut that meets Navy or Marine Corps grooming standards. The Navy and Marine Corps Grooming Standards are strictly enforced at the NROTC Unit. The below links detail current grooming standards: • Navy: Chapter 2- http://www.npc.navy.mil/bupersnpc/support/uniforms/uniformregulations/chapter2/Pages/default.aspx Enclosure (1)

In addition parking for orientation is available in any lot that is not labeled Gold or Green. Campus parking maps are available at http://www.uidaho.edu/parking/maps. The closest lot to the Idaho Commons is lot 24 (red lot). 7. If you are a College Program student not on scholarship, you will need to pay university enrollment expenses, including tuition and registration fees, room and board, school supplies (including books), activities, food and miscellaneous expenses. Scholarship students will need to pay all housing expenses (including deposit), food, and miscellaneous expenses. Scholarships cover tuition and academic fees, and include a monthly stipend and a textbook stipend. Also, be sure to bring cash (approximately $30 per day) as food provided by the unit will be limited and you will need to buy your own meals throughout the week. 8. Also, please bring a certified copy of your birth certificate and High School Transcripts to New Student Orientation. These are needed to complete your enrollment into the program. Read the enclosed checklist carefully and make sure you have all of the administrative and medical forms completed when you check in for orientation. 9. Enclosure (5) sets forth the physical fitness requirements for Navy and Marine Option midshipman. Review this thoroughly and set your goals high, as this will impact your ability to complete the Naval ROTC program and your career as an Officer. You are strongly encouraged to exceed the minimum requirements based on your age. Failure to meet minimum requirements upon arrival may result in loss of scholarship benefits and/or rejection from the program. In pursuit of this goal, it is encouraged to immediately establish a daily regimen, which will ensure you arrive in top physical condition. I suggest, at a minimum, to run 2 to 5 miles 3 times a week and also conduct some form of calisthenics; try to work up to 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups and 20 pull-ups at least 3 times a week. Conduct a self assessment PRT/PFT and include your score on enclosure (2). Then based on your score, use enclosure (5) for suggested workouts. 10. Women’s Navy Uniform Sizing Chart Women’s uniforms come in 3 different body types: Junior (J); Misses (M) and Women’s (W)? The junior is 2” smaller in the hip than the misses and 4” smaller than the women’s. They also come in 3 lengths to accommodate your height: petite (5’ ¾” and under); regular (5’3/4” – 5’ 7”) and tall (5’ 7” and above). TO DETERMINE YOUR BUST SIZE: Have a sales associate take your measurements as described below. Use the chart to predict your size. For example, a 12MR has the following measurements: Bust 37 1/2”, Waist 29 ½ “, Height 5’5”. Determine the correct fit. For a skirt or slacks, fit the waist. In the example above, if the 12MR hip is too big, try a 12JR. If the hip is too small, try a 12WR. If the waist is too tight, try the next size. For a jumper or dress coat, fit the bust. Adjust the type to fit the hip. To Measure Your Inseam (You will need someone to help you) 1. Put on a pair of dress pants that fit well and doesn’t sit too low on the hips along with shoes with a standard heel. Stand in a normal, comfortable position. 2. Measure the right leg from the underside of the crotch (known as the top inseam point) to the bottom side of the ankle (the lowest inseam point). If the selected pants are too short, add length for how long the pants should be. The hem of the pants should be approximately ½ inch from the floor. (Yes, this is different than Navy Regulation) 3. Measure the other side, to make sure it is the same and make note of the measurement. Measuring For Your Cap/Hat Size Step 1: Use a tape measure to measure around your head: across your brow (approx 1" above eye brows) slightly above your ears keeping the tape parallel to the floor this measurement is a "two-person" event and is nearly impossible to accurately do by yourself For best results, use a plastic/cloth tape measure. Alternately, you may use a piece of string or cord and then measure the length of the cord Step 2: For female sizes, your head measurement in inches will be your hat size. For male and generic sizes, divide the measurement in inches by 3.14 to obtain your cap size, rounding UP to the nearest 1/8". Don’t like math? Use this sizing chart. Head – Inches 20 3/8" 20 3/4" 21 1/8" 21 1/2" 22" 22 3/8" 22 3/4" 23 1/8" 23 1/2" 24"
