NOTES
Welcome to the 2014 VIEW Business Plan Competition. This is our 9th year, and we are pleased
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗
to have 31 outstanding teams competing for up to $20,000. The students on these teams represent colleges from all over campus. As you review this document, you may notice many outstanding judges who are reviewers and evaluators of the business plans. The combined experience of these professionals make this competition real. My sincere thanks goes to the judges for taking the time to be involved with this business plan competition. Without them, and their real-world experience, this competition might be just another classroom exercise. Our judges make this competition so real, that many past teams have launched a business idea, thereby creating jobs, building our economy, and enhancing our tax base. Many of the teams you see today will also launch, taking their dreams, and the mandate of VIEW “out there!” Our thanks also goes out to the many faculty and staff who serve as mentors to our student teams. It’s also important I thank the many students competing today. We at VIEW look forward to helping you launch your businesses and to reach your entrepreneurial goals.
Dr. Mike McCollough VIEW Director

The Jersey Devil Team Members: Tyler Drzewucki Commercial logging is important in the Northwest, but is also one of the most dangerous industries for workers, and deaths are on the increase as the need for timber goes up. In logging, transporting logs from stump to landing means a “yarding” machine with suspended cables. Harvested logs are rigged with a “choker” for pulling uphill, but a choker setting as a profession is a very dangerous occupation. The Jersey Devil has invented a safer alternative to minimize the danger from loose cables. Our magnetic choker will improve production efficiency, reduce the danger in logging operations, and reduce downtime. ________________________________________________________

VoteNow Team Members: Martin Calderon, Katelyn Cramer, Gabe Gutierrez, Taylor LeCates, Dalton O'Neill, Nick Pica VoteNow is an app that encourages qualified voters to participate, since only half of the qualified voters in the US voted in the presidential election in 2012. VoteNow offers educational information on current elections and regulates elections from local levels to national. The only similar app is operated by a company that lets people post polls and doesn’t facilitate government elections. VoteNow will collaborate locally with senators from UI and filter into other colleges’ elections. The app will post ads to create a profit. People can become more involved and join campaigns.

Children are our most precious commodity. This is something almost all of us can agree on. Most parents would do anything to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their children. Kidnapping and losing their children is a parent’s worst nightmare. We aim to design a product that will secure a higher assurance of security for young children—a technology that could be used not just for children, but important possessions, the elderly, and numerous other options. A tracking chip that can easily and discreetly be placed in children’s shoes, in luggage or backpacks, or a wallet. This chip can sync up with an app and offers a variety of settings for finding and preventing the loss of all of our precious commodities.
This innovation has reworked a 2-stroke engine so that the engine produces much cleaner emissions than before. There is also an increase in torque—a small innovation with momentous possibilities.

Team RAM-ROD
The NovoDriver incorporates innovative technology for greater efficiency, reduced noise, and to handle higher payloads. Existing drivers on the market for bipolar motors have to be replaced frequently, are loud, have problems dealing with heat, and cannot handle high payloads. The NovoDriver provides superior technology and better performance in terms of durability, precision, noise suppression, and higher payloads. The 3D printing industry is set to see an annual growth rate of 45.7%, which makes this a lucrative opportunity for NovoDriver.

New cellphones are emerging every year and countless individuals are being forced to buy the new technology. Most of the time the new cellphones have several features that most consumers don’t even use. The features are very limited and the phone is almost useless to them. Well, why not create a phone for each specific person, and every year they can have the choice of altering the phone. This will cut down the electronic waste in the world and will give the consumer the ability to be finally in control.
Optimatch Jobs

Team Members: Michael Mattson, Jacob Stevens
Tennis Optimatchjobs.com uses innovative statistical matching algorithms to deliver precise and relevant pairings of companies to job seekers. We provide a user-friendly platform to offer an enjoyable job match experience. Matching algorithms allow potential personality and cultural matching while current job board posting methods lack human aspects of employment.
Team Members: Jane McGuckin, Alex Morton Our business idea is something that would greatly benefit our men and women’s tennis programs, as well as those who attend UI but aren’t able to play tennis during the winter and spring due to poor weather. Our proposal is two pronged: the implementation of a Professional Tennis Management program (PTM) in the University of Idaho CBE curriculum and an indoor tennis facility that would allow more practice time for the men and women's teams during the winter and spring times. Students who aren't on the team but who enjoy the sport would also greatly benefit from this. The PTM program would be based off of Ferris State University's successful program (one of the only four year universities who offer the program). Both the facility and program would be run in a self-sufficient manner.

Team Members: Shelby Blackburn, Adriana Carbon, Colby Hagestad, Allison Saralecos, Jocelyn Schelske The S.E.E.D. Network is an exciting new program that aims to rectify the lack of awareness of environmental issues in high school students. Climate change and other environmental issues are not going to be solved by technology, but by policy, and the only way to change policy is to have educated voters. We plan on doing this by having a lecture series and doing workshops at local high schools—as well as advising interested students on day camps and other opportunities to learn more about environmental science and sustainability. ________________________________________________________

This piece of equipment mechanizes the process of harvesting fruit and bypasses the traditional process of using ladders and hand baskets. Mold damage is a prevalent issue in apartment bathrooms due to improper ventilation. AutoFan is a new humidistat product that will automatically engage the fan when humidity levels are too high. This will significantly decrease maintenance expenses.
Our product is a bracelet that can be tracked by cell phone. The purpose is to help parents keep track of their precious toddlers in an increasingly populated and busy world. Bracelets will be toy themed such as “princess” or “super hero.” Two varieties will be offered, one tracked with just a cellular device and higher priced versions available with GPS. Bracelets will include features, such as predator deterrents and emergency personnel alerting. We will market the bracelet as a safety device and as a toy, creating attachment and desirability among children.

Students already have to make many financial sacrifices while in college, and one of these shouldn’t have to be to settle for less than adequate housing. We propose to invest in geothermal heating and cooling in dormitories. The current systems on college campuses are subpar and costly. Global warming and air pollution are also issues affecting all communities. Geothermal heating and cooling would help create a more ecofriendly student lifestyle and overall healthier campus. The cost of renovations would be an initial set back, but with support from Vandal alumni and other non-profit environmentally friendly organizations, this is very feasible.

Moving Illustrations Team Members: Anna Arend, Vincent Bruscas, Robert Comley, Sarah Duff, Cody Holtrop, Evan Lovel This organization has a primary focus on reintroducing the much needed concept of learning to read from physical interaction with books, but with an added modern technological twist. “Dressing your own college style” is our positioning. We want students to dress with their own design of a college uniform (not sports brands like NIKE, NB, etc., but fashion, such as Vans, forever 21). Our deferent is attracting people to designing their own style or uniform using the software on a smart phone. In addition, the creative points are from app design, college customer data mining, special earning cycle (1P marketing model), and let fashion determine the college culture. For the future, it is a sustainable system, because it’s a small cost to move to a new school.

Lovely Lace Team Members: Soukaina Bouzekri Alami, Marci Griggs, Jacob Johnson This business specializes in helping women find the perfect lingerie garments that give them confidence in the way they look and feel about their bodies. There are many different body types in the world; this makes it harder for women to find an undergarment that will complement their body type. Our business helps women of all body types with the struggle of finding the most flattering lingerie. Most women are unsure of the style of lingerie and swimwear for their body type. They are not properly fitted to the pieces, which can make it uncomfortable, too large, or too small. By fitting the clothing to the person, instead of the person to the clothing, the customer is comfortable and not self-conscious about their body image. By providing a service of custom fittings by new technologies, such as 3D body scanning, women will have their exact sizes taken and then pick from many different designers products that will then be altered to fit the individual. Most of the designers that we carry have their own target markets, so this will bring in a range of silhouettes to offer as well, meaning alterations are not always necessary. Home fittings will also be available to schedule for bachelorette parties, wedding showers, birthdays, or any girls night out events.

Team Members: Galdino Carvajal, Levi Lancaster
Over a million kids play youth hockey in North America, and this number is growing rapidly in players under 18. More players means more breakaways, goals, and fun. It also means more frustrations for parents who wrestle to get the next Sidney Crosby outfitted for the ice. Our solution is revolutionary hockey gear that greatly reduces the time and stress of suiting up. Our two-piece hockey suit promotes efficiency, safety, and simplicity, which gets kids on the ice faster and saves parents headaches.
Our business idea is to open up a hot springs campground/resort area in Lolo, Montana. For the pool area, there will be one large swimming pool that is not heated. There is then another pool, approximately half the size of the swimming pool, which is heated with natural hot water. Finally there are private hot tubs that are up for rent. These are heated by natural hot water. One will be able to adjust the temperature and inflow of hot water with a nozzle that is in the room. These are for adults 19 and up.

We envision a future of free, universal power—the future of wireless electricity. COIL is an energy research lab dedicated to providing technology to liberate the world of existing energy constraints. Using specific principles of electricity and magnetism, we propagate alternatives for both energy creation and consumption through wireless transmission. Through these solutions, we propose a world that relies on less calamitous methods to fuel the machines of progress.
Team Members: Kyle Polito We provide top quality action shots for everyone. Parents are unable to get good action shots of their kids’ sporting events. Real-Time Fermenter provides serious home brewers and small breweries the ability to send real-time fermentation data straight to their laptops for easy yeast tracking and diagnostics. Using a Bluetooth-enabled unit that sits inside a stainless steel fermenter, our product will take specific gravity, temperature, and restart stuck fermentations, features currently unavailable to home brewers. Our product eases the home brewer’s process and provides readings they need in order to produce a consistent product. As the popularity of home brewing grows, the demand for more efficient brewing technology such as this will also grow.
Fun Readers Team Members: Anika Austin With television and internet becoming more popular, children have less interest in reading. Parents work long hours and do not have much time to spend with their children as they used to. Therefore, children spend a lot of time in front of the television and lose interest in reading. They do not have the enjoyment of people reading with them. Rather than movies that show pictures for viewers, reading leaves the pictures up to the imagination of the readers, while showing some pictures to keep interest.

Sixty percent of American bridge failures are caused by scouring. ThermoSense uses a new method to monitor scouring and prevent bridge failure by streaming real-time data to professionals. Our product is a fraction of the cost of our competitors. We use simple equations to measure thermal diffusivity, scour-deposition, thermal regime of the sediment, and surfacesubsurface fluxes. It can be deployed to various fluvial environments, and the 500,000 bridges in the US provide serious market opportunity. Potential buyers include the Federal Highway Administration, climatologists, and lumber companies. Revenue streams include direct sales, data analysis service charges, and research data sales.

Should the trade turn negative, the total risk to the investor is the $100 fee and Fulcrum profits $50. Based on a quote from Archimedes: “Give me a fulcrum and I will move the world,” this fund offers the ultimate degree of leverage. ________________________________________________________

One of the University of Idaho’s greatest assets is its diversity and openness to international students. They also contribute a lot to the Moscow community and are valued by the town. Unfortunately, as some people are aware, many of them fall through the cracks because once the international students get to Moscow, they have a lot to learn about the culture, laws, and logistics of living in the US, and the university cannot always provide the assistance they need. They turn to each other for help and still end up lost, confused, and overwhelmed.
Team Members: Nicholas Garcia, Kyle Head, Niko Salinas, Sydney Sherer Mentors: Mark Rounds, Instructor of IS, College of Business & Economics We are Heated Technologies. We have designed a one-of-a-kind inner shell constructed with heat conducting carbon fiber, a simple charge, and a go process that will keep you comfortable and safe outdoors during the winter.
In other countries, there are services provided to international students by a third party, similar to a travel agency, who are paid to provide assistance with buying cell phones, opening bank accounts, choosing an apartment, communication, finding jobs, getting an ID card, and etc. Setting up an international student affairs dynamic outreach business with a multilingual website and an office with 24-hour on-call employees is an easy way to connect these students quickly to their new community and prevent them from getting in trouble with the law or in social situations. Local students interested in travel or study abroad could also benefit by volunteering for events where international food is and intercultural information exchanged.

In the construction industry, there is a need for cement trucks that move quickly to keep concrete from setting before it is laid down. To prevent ruined loads and costly waste, our design mixes the water into the concrete at the site, providing fresh cement.
Hellhake Appliance Service is a customer-oriented appliance installation and repair business in McCall, Idaho. Currently, Valley County residents seeking appliance services endure long waits and inflated fees because the nearest providers are nearly 100 miles away. We provide reliable maintenance, repair, installation, and removal services, and sell refurbished appliances. The owner has strong community ties, a solid reputation, and a client-base ready for full time launch in June 2014. By expanding on current contracts, Hellhake Appliance Service can become a successful, long-term, reputable business and a household name in Valley County, Idaho.

Artist’s Guild
________________________________________________________
Team Members: Austin Brown Essentially the guild is a limited liability corporation that functions like a game that artists play to make money and reduce the stress of doing all the work on their own, since they will be assisted in finding and securing work. The guild will also provide space and tools to do all their work within the same community work environment, making the membership highly desirable for the creative spirit and for those looking for a little more security as a working artist. ________________________________________________________
Moscow Meals Team Members: Samantha Bafus, Kade Hubbard, Hilary Smith Time is a precious commodity, and it is one of the few things that cannot be bought. After a long day at school, many students do not want to take more time to venture into a crowded restaurant to eat the food they want. Moscow Meals allows students to spend more time doing the things they want to do while we pick up their orders from our selected partners and deliver them to their homes. ________________________________________________________

Laptops are expensive. We have a solution that makes them affordable and opens a new sector of marketing. AdTop Electronics sells advertising space on laptops, for example, on the keyboard, back panel, and palm rests. Consequently, the cost of manufacturing laptops is subsidized from the revenue generated by selling ad space, therefore we can sell affordable laptops. Consumers can purchase a laptop at a fraction of the cost of a regular computer. AdTop Electronics is not only a marketing venture, but a social enterprise.
Moscow, Idaho, has a rich history as a vibrant sports community, but our passion for basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and many other activities has outgrown our facilities. Our appetite for sports, coupled with seasonal weather, intensifies the need for an indoor multipurpose recreational facility. The University of Idaho has similar problems, with many team and extra-curricular activities struggling to find suitable playing space. Our non-profit start-up links the community, sports organizations, and University programs; provides great ecofriendly indoor facilities and offers economic stimulus from sporting events (i.e., AAU basketball, tennis teams and tournaments, indoor soccer, clinics, and training). Our business model is designed to be used in Moscow initially and duplicated in the future in communities with similar demographics and needs.

Team Members: Chris Chapa, Barrie Jeter, Justin Jeter
Our mission is to establish a medical tourism agency to provide complete assistance in having medical treatment in India/globally. Our target customers need to go through expensive treatments that are not in their budget and those who are dissatisfied with their current medical insurance. This agency takes an individual’s medical case and a special team analyzes insurance plans and available expert doctors in the particular cases. Then the agency organizes travel, VISA, hotel, and medical treatment for the patient at the lowest possible cost.
Craft beers are exploding in popularity, especially in the Northwest. There is still, however, a limited quantity of local craft brews on the Palouse. Drunken Goat Brewing Company plans to fill that void by setting up shop in downtown Moscow, offering substantial craft brews for the contemporary beer drinker. The brewery will house a tap room where patrons can drink fresh beer with their friends or fill half-gallon growlers to take home. We will have a small bakery to use the spent grains to make bread appetizers.
