Guest Speakers University of Idaho – Moscow In the wide world of athletic competition, few accomplishments surpass earning a gold medal at the Olympics. For Kristin Armstrong ‘95, that pinnacle of athletic achievement occurred in August 2008 at the Beijing Summer Olympics when she won the 14.6-mile road cycling individual time trial. “It’s one of those dreams you have as a child in America,” she said. “It’s the most amazing day of my life.” Armstrong became only the second American woman cyclist in history to claim an Olympic gold medal; the first gold was won by Connie Carpenter Phinny in 1984.

Kristin Armstrong ‘95

In addition to the Olympic gold medal, Armstrong is a two-time Olympian and five-time U.S. national champion. On the world stage, she has a total of four medals, which puts her in exclusive company with Greg LeMond as the only other American cyclist with four World Championship medals. In 2006, she won a World Championship in the elite women’s time trial and repeated the accomplishment in September 2009.

Armstrong was born into a military family in 1973 and grew up in Tennessee, Italy, California, Japan and Idaho – where she now resides. She graduated from the University of Idaho College of Education in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in sports physiology. She became a junior Olympian in swimming when she was 17 and excelled as a runner and triathlete until she was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her hips in 2001. She then chose to switch gears to cycling. Soon, she became a world champion, Olympian and one of the most accomplished American cyclists ever. She continues to give back to the sports that have given her success. She is a swimming instructor and coach, an ambassador for the YMCA of Boise and works to inspire those individuals who also suffer from arthritis.

University of Idaho – Boise Lori Jean Otter has served as Idaho’s First Lady since January 1, 2007, when her husband, C.L. “Butch” Otter, became governor. Mrs. Otter was born in Pensacola, Fla., where she grew up in a naval military family as the youngest of four children and the only girl. When her father retired in the 1970s, her family moved to Twin Falls to take over a family farm. Mrs. Otter fell in love with Idaho and became active in 4-H and FFA, and took horse, sheep and pig projects to the Twin Falls County Fair. After graduation from Kimberly High School, First Lady Otter attended school at College of Southern Idaho where she earned an associate of arts degree in English literature. She finished her bachelor’s degree at Boise State University in education and physical education with minors in health and English. Mrs. Otter began her teaching career in Wellton, Ariz., and returned to Idaho when she accepted a teaching and coaching position in the Meridian School District where she taught health and physical education. She coached basketball and volleyball at the middle school and high school levels for 12 years. In 2004, she completed her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in educational leadership at Northwest Nazarene University. She spent two years in the Meridian School District working in administration at the elementary level. Mrs. Otter is on the Foundation Board at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, the Treasure Valley Reading Foundation and Idaho Governor’s Cup, and she is the summer reading ambassador for the Idaho Association of Libraries. She and her husband serve on the Idaho Meth Project Advisory Council and have worked to launch and promote the Idaho Meth Project, a prevention campaign designed to reduce the first-time use of methamphetamines by youth in Idaho. She was recently appointed to the Governor’s Spouses Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free and continues to advocate about underage drinking issues in her state.

Stanley P. Desjardins ‘58, aviation safety pioneer, engineer, educator, entrepreneur Stanley Desjardins has more than 50 years of experience in the research and development of aerospace systems and components. He founded two companies that develop technology and products to improve occupants’ chances of survival in airplane, helicopter and vehicle crashes. Energy-absorbing, crashworthy seats, whether designed by him or others who followed the principles he developed, have saved many lives and prevented debilitating injuries. The American Helicopter Society has recognized him as a pioneer in aviation safety. Desjardins was born in a farm town in northern Minnesota, but the family followed his father to an Army base in Idaho during World War II. He served in the Korean War and the GI Bill put Desjardins into college at the University of Idaho. He studied mechanical engineering and developed an interest in solid-propellant rocketry. That led to a job at Thiokol Chemical Corp. in Utah where he worked on the nozzle design for the Minuteman program, the first solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missiles. Ten years later, he joined a small Arizona company to study crash safety and ended up founding Simula, Inc., to bring the research into production. The company’s first big break was to supply energy-absorbing, crashworthy seats to the Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. Later, federal regulators contracted with Simula to study jet airliner crashes,

–9–

and the company’s research determined stronger seats were necessary to improve safety. The company went on to design and produce crashworthy seats for military and commercial airplanes and helicopters and side-airbag systems for aviation and automobiles. Simula also became a leader in armor systems, including improved body armor, transparent armor for vehicles and lightweight armor for aircraft. Desjardins also was responsible for major revisions in the U.S. Army’s “Aircraft Crash Survival Design Guide,” which was considered the authority on crash-resistant aircraft design criteria. In 2002, Desjardins founded a new company, Safe, Inc., to continue research to advance the state-of-the-art in crashworthy seats, as well as other interests. Desjardin is the inventor or co-inventor of six patents, and his many awards include recognition from the American Helicopter Society in 2003 for his contributions that increase aircrew and passenger safety. He also has been nominated for induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. In recognition of his leadership in and contributions to the field of aviation safety, the University of Idaho is proud to confer upon Stanley P. Desjardins, a most distinguished citizen and leading alumnus, the degree of Doctor of Engineering.

Gary E. Strong ‘66, has been a librarian and library administrator for more than 40 years. A native of Potlatch, Strong’s career began as a student employee at the University of Idaho Library while he was earning his bachelor’s degree in education. That humble beginning eventually led to positions as director of the Queens Borough Public Library in New York, which has been called the busiest public library in America, and as state librarian of California, the top administrative post in the California State Library system. In addition, he has been a consultant and adviser to the Library of Congress. Strong is a leader in identifying and addressing key issues that reflect the social challenges that face public institutions today, such as the role of the public library in the 21st century, adult literacy, electronic equity for equal access to information, multiculturalism and cultural diversity in a pluralistic society, intellectual freedom, privacy and censorship and other topics related to the knowledge explosion. Throughout his career, Strong has served on a number of leading library policy panels, including the White House Conference on Libraries in 1992 and the National Academies in 2008, and he is the author/editor of numerous journal articles on library and literacy issues. He regularly speaks at international library meetings on multicultural library services and electronic delivery of information services to multicultural communities. He has served on the governing board of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and as its NGO representative to the United Nations. He has been honored with the Knowledge Trust Award from the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Twenty-First Century Librarian Award from Syracuse University, the Advancement of Literacy Award from the Public Library Association, and the Humphrey Award from the American Library Association’s International Relations Round Table. In addition to his bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho, Strong earned a master’s degree in library science from the University of Michigan in 1967. In recognition of his leadership in the international advancement of libraries, the University of Idaho is proud to confer upon Gary E. Strong, a most distinguished citizen and leading alumnus, the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

In 1942, he enlisted in naval aviation and served as an instructor and pilot during World War II. He remained in the Marine Reserves and retired in 1963 with the rank of major. He also was a lifetime rancher, farmer and woolgrower. The son of Basque immigrants who developed a range sheep business in Carey, he learned the Basque language at home. In 2001, he received the honor “Basque of the World” from the Sabino Arana Foundation in Bilboa, Basque Country. “Pete Cenarrusa is the definition of the University of Idaho’s “Legacy of Leading,” said Steve Johnson, executive director of alumni relations. “Pete is a war hero, a successful University of Idaho student and athlete, an honored state leader, a loyal husband and an exemplary father. The University of Idaho could not find another alumnus more deserving than Pete Cenerrusa to be included in the University of Idaho Alumni Hall of Fame.” Cenarrusa has previously been honored by his alma mater with the Alumni Association Silver and Gold Award in 1988, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Dean’s Excellence Award in 2002, and the University of Idaho’s President’s Medallion in 2006. The University of Idaho Alumni Hall of Fame award was created in 1962 to recognize alumni who have achieved national or international distinction by their accomplishments and leadership. Consideration is given for: distinction in career accomplishments; leadership within career organizations; voluntary leadership efforts in charitable causes; leadership efforts which have improved the cultural, social, political or economic well being of society; prior recognition and honors; and artistic, innovative or technical accomplishments.

Daniel D. Frye ’79 has achieved international distinction through his career at IBM where he currently serves as vice president of open system development, including management of IBM’s Linux Technology Center. He leads a worldwide software development team of more than 1,500 software professionals at IBM. In 2002, he was named one of the “50 Most Powerful People in Networking” by Network World magazine. Prior to his current responsibilities, Frye was a member of IBM’s Emerging Technologies and Business Opportunities team where he worked on company-wide technical strategies that predicted future trends and transitions in the Information Technology industry. It was during this time that Frye co-authored the original IBM corporate strategies for both Linux and open source software. Linux is a computer operating system and one of the most prominent examples of free software and open-source development. Unlike proprietary operating systems such as Windows and Mac OS, all of the underlying source code for Linux is available to the public and anyone can freely use, modify, improve and redistribute it. Through Frye’s leadership, IBM developers are now working with peers from around the world in the open source community with the goal of making Linux better and enabling customers to run Linux in all areas of computing.

“Dr. Frye is an excellent example of our ‘Legacy of Leading,’ said Scott Wood, dean of the College of Science. “He probably never imagined as a freshman that a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Idaho would lead him to graduate school at Johns Hopkins, followed by a leadership career in developing Linux software. However, in retrospect, his own personal drive, intellect and talent, combined with the solid education he received at Idaho, clearly represent a formula for success. We in the College of Science are extremely proud to count Dr. Frye among our alumni.” Frye earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Idaho in 1979. He later earned a master’s degree in physics and a doctoral degree in theoretical atomic physics from Johns Hopkins University.

Nancy Morris ’83 has achieved a remarkable career in both the national and international spheres of law and commerce. She currently is executive vice president at Allianz Global Investors of America where she serves as chief U.S. regulatory counsel. Morris also has achieved great distinction through her leadership and service in the public sector at the Securities and Exchange Commission. Morris has held the position of SEC secretary from 2006-08 – the first woman to hold the post. She oversaw the final legal review of all SEC rulemaking and enforcement actions submitted to and approved by the commission. Then-SEC chairman Christopher Cox credits Morris with leading an effort to help investors gain easier and quicker access to SEC information and historic documents and records. According to Cox, she “set an exemplary standard for public service on behalf of America’s investors and capital markets.” She held previous appointments at the SEC from 2004-06 and 1985-92. Morris also worked in the private sector as vice president and associate legal counsel to the investment management firm, T. Rowe Price Associates, and as an attorney for Fidelity Investments. “Nancy’s professional career has spanned not only the private and public sectors, but also the national and international spheres of law and commerce,” said Don Burnett, dean of the College of Law. “Her achievements, accompanied by the admiration she has earned from her peers, have brought high-profile recognition to her personally and great credit to the University of Idaho.” Morris earned her law degree at Idaho in 1983, and was editor-in-chief of the Idaho Law Review. She currently serves on the College of Law Advisory Board, and received the Award of Merit from the law faculty in 2006. She will serve as commencement speaker for the College of Law during May 2010 ceremonies in Moscow.

Significance

of

Academic Apparel

and

Mace

By observing certain features of the academic apparel, it is possible to learn several things about the academic status of the scholar: the level of the degree attained, the branch of learning in which it was earned, and the college or university conferring the degree.

Gowns

The gowns differ according to the level of the degree. The sleeves are the principal indicator – gowns of bachelors have pointed sleeves; those of masters have oblong sleeves with an arc cut away at the front; and doctors have round, bell-shaped sleeves. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed. Doctoral gowns have distinctive velvet facing down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve.

Caps

The color of the tassel worn on the cap varies with the level of degree. The bachelor’s tassel represents the color appropriate to the major field of study; the master’s and specialist’s tassels are black; and the doctoral tassels are old gold.

Hoods

The length of the hood also varies according to the level of degree. The bachelor’s gown is worn without a hood. A master’s hood is three and one-half feet long, and a doctor’s hood is four feet in length and has panels at the sides. It is from the colors adorning the hood that one can learn two other facts. Lining- the hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree (silver and gold, signifying the University of Idaho). Trimming- the hood is trimmed with velvet of a color appropriate to the wearer’s branch of learning. For example, the trimming for the degree of Master of Science in Agriculture is maize, representing agriculture, rather than golden yellow, representing science. (In the case of the Doctor of Philosophy degree, the dark blue color is used, representing the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship, regardless of the branch of learning.) Colors associated with the different disciplines are as follows: Music Pink Nursing Apricot Oratory (Speech) Silver Gray Pharmacy Olive Green Philosophy Dark Blue Physical Education Sage Green Public Administration Peacock Blue Public Health Salmon Pink Science Golden Yellow Social Work Citron Theology Scarlet Veterinary Science (DVM) Gray

Agriculture Maize Arts, Letters, Humanities White Commerce, Accountancy, Business Drab Dentistry Lilac Economics Copper Education Light Blue Engineering Orange Fine Arts, including Architecture Brown Forestry Russet Journalism Crimson Law Purple Library Science Lemon Medicine Green

Honor Cords Honor Cords, worn around the neck and hanging loosely down the front, identify students who are graduating with honors: gold, summa cum laude (with highest distinction); silver, magna cum laude (with great distinction); and bronze cords designate graduation cum laude (with distinction). The cords are provided by the University of Idaho and are worn on this one occasion only.

The University of Idaho adopted a doctoral gown of its own in 1989. The silver gown has a panel and sleeve bars of black velvet outlined in antique gold. The beret styled soft cap is patterned after the Cambridge version instead of the traditional Oxford-style mortarboard. The cap and gown were designed by Emeritus Professor Edmund Chavez in the university’s centennial year and is worn today by faculty serving as officials at the university commencements.

The mace, a heavy staff or club used in medieval times for breaking armor, acquired a ceremonial function in 13th century France as a symbol of secular authority. The University of Idaho mace, designed by Edmund M. Chavez, professor emeritus, with metal work by Idaho artist Ray Goodner, was used for the first time at the 1989 centennial commencement. It is 32 inches long, made of walnut, and encircled with bands of Idaho gold and silver in which Idaho garnets and opals are set. The head is embellished with silver and gold representations of camas plants and syringa flowers.

To enrich education through diversity, the University of Idaho does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran in employment or in admission to or the operation of its educational program and activities, as required by state and federal laws and regulation. Inquiries may be directed to the university’s Human Rights Compliance Office.

“ H e r e W e H a v e I d a ho ” 1 Alma Mater, the hope of a pioneer race; You’re fashioned of dreams and of toil, Your walls and your towers by stout-hearted men Were raised from the rock and the soil. Chorus And here we have Idaho, Winning her way to fame; Silver and Gold in the sunlight blaze, And romance lies in her name; Singing, we’re singing of you, ah, proudly too; All our lives through we’ll go singing, Singing of you, Alma Mater, our Idaho.

2 Now ours is the heritage, rich and so full, The gain of their toil and their tears; And ours is the fruit, and the harvest is ours, Oh, Idaho, gift of the years.
