AbstractsofPh.D.Dissertations

Thisdissertationfocusesoninvestigatingthethermalresponseofvariouspropertiesinultra-widebandgap-phasenanocrystallinegalliumoxide, β-phaseGa2 O3 semiconductorthinfilms.Opticalandphonon interactionswereexamined,revealingaredshiftoftheopticalbandgapby ∼200meV withinatemperaturerangeof77to622K. Theopticalgapatroomtemperaturemeasuredapproximately4.85eV,whichistypicalfornanocrystallinethinfilms.Analysis oftheelectron-phononinteractionshowed theinvolvementofalow-energyphononat around30meV.Defects,includingdisorderedgraphiteform,Sp2networkincor-

poration,andgranularmorphology,significantlyinfluencedtheband-edgeproperties atelevatedtemperatures.Theemissionat 3.56eVand4.85eVinthedeep-UVregionwasattributedtobandgaprecombination,confirmingthetheoreticalprediction thattrappedholesinhibitbandgapemission.Theratiooflargeself-trappedholes (STH)tobandgapintensitywasdetermined tobe6:1,makingbeta-galliumoxideaviableemitterinthe3.56eVSTHspectralrange.ThedistinctionbetweenSTH andself-trappedexcitons(STE)wasinvestigated,indicatingconsistencybetweenSTH photoluminescence(PL)ataround3.5eV andSTEemission.Furthermore,thethermalresponseofSTHphotoluminescenceand

theroleofphononinteractionwereexaminedinthe β-Ga2O3 nanocrystallinefilms acrossatemperaturerangeof77to622K. ThePLintensitydecreasedwithincreasing temperature,exhibitinganactivationenergyof ∼72meV.RamanmodeanalysisrevealedadecreaseintheintensityofhighfrequencymodesassociatedwiththeGaIO4 site,suggestingaphononannihilationprocess.Thesemodes,havingenergycomparabletotheSTHactivationenergy,cancouple totheSTHandtransitionitfromaradiativetoanon-radiativeregimeaccordingto theconfigurationalcoordinatemodel.The broadlinewidthofthePLindicatedastrong STH-phononcoupling.Thelow-frequency RamanmodesfollowedthethermalBoseEinsteinphononpopulation.ThepeakpositionoftheSTHexhibitednegligibletemperatureresponsecomparedtotheredshiftof ∼220meVobservedinthefilm’sbandedge, attributedtoitsdeep-levelenergyposition.Thetemperature-dependentlinewidth (FWHM)oftheSTHintensityshowedweak temperaturedependence,confirmingSTH asanintrinsicdefectpropertyinGa2O3 crystals.Hysteresisexperimentsdemonstratedthereversibilityandconsistencyof thetemperature-dependentmeasurements, highlightingtheresilienceofthe β-Ga2O3 semiconductorfilmsforhigh-temperature, high-power,andoptoelectronicdeviceapplicationssuchasforUVemitters.

Studyingthespectraofdustindifferent planetaryenvironmentsisimportantasit providesvaluableinsightsintotheprocesses occurringinvariousastronomicalenvironments.Thisknowledgenotonlyadvances ourunderstandingofotherworldsbutalso haspracticalimplicationsforfuturespace missionsandourbroaderunderstandingof planetarysystems.Spectraldataoftencontainsnoise, andoneofthechallengesisto reducethisnoiseandimprovethesignal-tonoiseratioinordertoextractreliableinformationfromthedata.Weexploreand applyseveralbackgroundremovalandnoise

First,thedustpopulationonEarth’sMoon isconstrainedbyobtaininganupperlimit onthenumberdensityofdustparticlesat theMoon’ssurface.Lunardust,duetoits abrasiveproperties,posesarisktooperationsontheMoon’ssurface,andthedust densitylimitsobtainedinthisanalysiswill helpplansaferandmorereliablefuturemissionstotheMoon.Theseconstraintson dustpopulationintheterminatorregionof theMooncanalsobeusedtoconstrainthe Moon’snear-surfaceenvironment.Next,we studythepropertiesofice-grainparticlesin Enceladus’ssouthpolarplumebyderiving typicallaunchvelocitiesandsizedistributionparametersfortheparticlespresentin theplume.Theseplumeparticlepropertiesprovidenewinsightsintoventdynamics, suggestingthatparticle-particleinteractions aremorerelevantthanpreviouslyexpected byestablishedmodels.Wealsodevelopa newMachineLearningalgorithmthatallows robustconstraintsonparticlesizedistributionparameterstobeextractedfromnoisy spectraldata.Thesetoolsrevealthatthe plume’sparticlepropertiescanvaryincomplexwaysovermultipletimescales.These findingsshouldconstrainthephysicalprocessesunderlyingEnceladus’splumeparticledynamics.
