How has the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine contributed to your life/work?
It taught me how to be a doctor and a lifelong learner.
Favorite memory of your time at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine: I broke my leg in a motorcycle accident at the start of my junior year. I thought I would have to drop out but I made it through 14 weeks of clinical rotations on crutches and that propelled me to being elected senior class president (classmates felt sorry for me). I got to deal with the psych rotation snafu, introduce Dean Eckstein at the Aesculapian Frolic, and lead the class in for our graduation (i.e., I was first in our class--literally). I made some very dear friends during those years.
Most memorable professor and why?
Dr. Lewis January, cardiology. Great teacher and taught by encouragement instead of humiliation and disparagement.
Dr. Jack Moyers, anesthesia.
He hired me to work a 6-week stint beginning in October of 1970 (One day after my motorcycle accident). He paid me even though I was unable to work and recruited me heavily for his residency. Wrote me a great letter of recommendation. Just a great guy!
Which people or places do you remember the most about your days in Iowa City?
Our golf group at Finkbine was John Hensing, Lee Endsley, Delos Hansen and me. We played a team game and the losers had to buy red cream soda for the winners. Our social circle was expanded to include Ray Emerson, Leo Milleman, George Stamos, Phil Woodward, John Fieselman, Bill Owen, Ron Benscoter, Dick McKinley, Jim Vogel, Dan Bohle, and Jim Hall, plus many others too numerous to mention.
What is something your classmates might find uniquely interesting about you?
I was a lot smarter than I looked.
Tell us about your service to the University of Iowa (volunteer boards, community-based educator, etc.):
I helped to recruit attendees for some of the early reunions. I haven’t been asked in more recent years. I assume they lost track of who was Senior Class President.
What are your current activities and interests (hobbies, travels, etc.)?
Golf, medical missions, bulldozer and backhoe operator.
List any current civic, community, or volunteer activities: HOA board vice president in AZ.
Other information:
I spent six years doing locum tenens in Hawaii after I retired. It was great fun and a great cultural learning experience. I still have some great friends on Oahu and Maui.

How has the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine contributed to your life/work?
I have always felt that my education at the UI was as good or better than any of my many colleagues through the years. I believe that much of the success I’ve had is a result of my years in Iowa City. I have left behind a legacy of medical providers. My son is a urologist, my daughter is a family practice doctor, a nephew is an ENT, another nephew and stepdaughter are NPs, a niece and another stepdaughter are RNs. I like to think that all these great people were influenced by my years at the University of Iowa.
Favorite memory of your time at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine:
I was going to quit medical school during the first semester of the sophomore year. I had no point of reference, as no one in my family had ever gone to college. I went over to tell my best friend, Charlie Gates, about my decision, and he talked me into sticking out the semester. Next semester came along, and lo and behold, I liked the clinical aspect of school. Thanks to Charlie and Sarah, I’ve had a wonderful life and a fulfilling career.
Most memorable professor and why?
Dr. Ted Chapler. I loved the way he taught and related to his students. Ted and I became friends, and my memories of our times together are vivid and always bring a smile to my face.
Which people or places do you remember the most about your days in Iowa City?
Joe’s was the place to meet. Great memories of the Highlander where I worked as a bartender all through medical school.
What is something your classmates might find uniquely interesting about you?
Probably my nine years as a ship’s physician. My wife and I got to literally travel the world. It was a great time in our lives and a wonderful way to end my career.
What are your current activities and interests (hobbies, travels, etc.)?
The main thrust in our lives is our interaction with our eight grandkids. We try to have each of them spend some time with us at our Florida home. I still play golf, not very well, swim and ride my bike.

How has the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine contributed to your life/work?
I cannot imagine having a better college experience or better education than at Iowa! I was there 14 years while receiving my BS, MS, MD, and urology residency training. What a great time. Over the years, I have been in many situations working with physicians who trained at medical schools across the country. An Iowa graduate can compete favorably with them all!
Favorite memory of your time at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine: Way too many to count!
Most memorable professor and why?
Charles Hawtrey, MD, Professor of Urology. He had gone through the same program and knew the pressure points. He was demanding, but fair. He took the time to get to know the residents as individual human beings.

What awards/honors have you received during your medical career?
Multiple teaching awards. Clinician of the Year Award.
How has the UI College of Medicine contributed to your life/work?
The UI College of Medicine gave me a wonderful background to launch my career. I was blessed with wonderful mentors who taught me how to think and teach.
Favorite memory of your time at the UI College of Medicine:
I do not have a favorite memory. We had a wonderful class with individuals who were willing to share their knowledge. I think we all enjoyed the time that Richard Freeman picked on George Stamos during a renal physiology class. We were all thankful that George took the brunt of the questions that none of us knew. The forensic pathology lecture by Earl Rose was particularly graphic.
Most memorable professor and why?
Dr. Hal Richerson in Allergy and Immunology was a great mentor. He truly took pleasure in his students’ successes.
What people or places do you remember the most about your days in Iowa City?
My tank partners, my AKK roommates, and colleagues from medical school, residency, and fellowship were the people I most remember.

I loved ALL aspects of family medicine... cradle to the grave care of families. By the time I retired, I was providing pregnancy care to young women I had delivered years prior who were now married and having children of their own... majorly satisfying.
Briefly describe your professional history, appointments (i.e., hospital, administration, academic, government) and significant accomplishments:
• Alpha Omega Alpha recipient at the University of Iowa
• South Dakota Family Doctor of the Year (1992)
• President of South Dakota Academy of Family Physicians Mid ‘90s.
• Joined a group of nine other physicians after board certification. We grew the group to over 120 MDs. I served the group during my last three years of employment in an administrative role as medical director.
How has the UI College of Medicine contributed to your life/work?
It provided me with an outstanding medical education. I had spent four years in the U.S. Navy after high school. I applied to five medical schools during my junior year of college and was accepted at three, including Iowa. I was married, had two children, and ended up being the second oldest member of the Class of ‘72, entering medical school at 28 years of age. I was driven to succeed and graduate, with a young family depending on me. I spent most evenings studying, which was rewarded by graduating in the top 5% of my class.
Favorite memory of your time at the UI College of Medicine: Iowa City and Coralville, where we lived had lots of fun things to do. I still cherish my friendships with classmates and spouses, many of whom we correspond with each Christmas. The summer between my freshman and sophomore years, I travelled daily to Muscatine and surveyed migrant labor camps there along with my classmate, Harry Mihm. We ended up writing a summary/report of the conditions, which went to the Iowa Legislature and resulted in marked improvement in housing, sanitation, etc. We provided health services to migrants on Friday nights in Muscatine at a local church.
Most memorable professor and why?
Dr. George Pennick, pathologist. I combined a two-month elective time from both my junior and senior years and spent it in pathology, doing autopsies and clinical path. It was a fantastic way to see the result of disease processes in situ. I nearly chose pathology as a future specialty, but knew I was “patient-oriented” and loved clinical contact with patients day-to-day.
What people or places do you remember the most about your days in Iowa City?
I remember great breaded pork tenderloins at a drive-in on old Highway 6 west of Coralville. My wife worked from day one when we hit Coralville as executive secretary to Dr. Fred Harcleroad, President, American College Testing, located in eastern Iowa City, just south of I-80. We enjoyed visiting the Amana Colonies on a regular basis.
What is something your classmates might find uniquely interesting about you?
I have a long-time love of bluegrass music and during my sophomore year bought a used late-1920s Gibson Mastertone five-string banjo for $150, which I taught myself to “somewhat” play over several years. I ended up selling the instrument for about what I paid for it several years later. Today that instrument is a “classic” and much in-demand for MUCH bigger prices... oh, well!

Residency Institution: McKennan Hospital
Residency Specialty: Family Medicine Fellowship: Tuberculosis Management Practice Specialty: Family Medicine
Briefly describe your clinical and research area(s) of interest: Practice and teaching of full-spectrum family medicine and preparing physicians for practice in rural communities of the upper Midwest.
Tuberculosis prevention and treatment was a special interest since med school.
Patient education and decision making shared with patients and their families remains highly important to me.
Briefly describe your professional history, appointments (i.e., hospital, administration, academic, government) and significant accomplishments:
My first two years in practice were in a two-person partnership, followed by six years in a multi-specialty group. In both settings I was able to provide full-spectrum care of patients, involving care of all ages, including obstetrics, and in all settings: clinic, hospitals, nursing homes, and home care. During those years, I was given the opportunity to take advanced training in tuberculosis management and became a TB clinician for the SD Department of Health for the eastern part of our state. In that role, I held monthly clinics and provided consultation in care of TB as requested. Teaching medical and nursing students and family medicine residents about TB was part of that package, too.
After eight years of private practice and serving as a clinical preceptor for students and residents, I joined the Sioux Falls Family Medicine Residency Program as a full-time faculty member. Throughout this time, I continued managing my own patients two days a week, and hospital care as needed. I also continued my role as a Tuberculosis Clinician for the State of SD Department of Health.
A couple of years after joining the residency faculty, I became its third program director and continued in that capacity until the year before my first retirement in 2015.
A few months later, I was recruited by the Good Samaritan Society to provide medical direction to a remote health monitoring service they were developing, with the goal of helping them gain accreditation for the program. I retired from that program in 2018.
I was a member of the medical staffs of both McKennan (now Avera McKennan) hospital and Sioux Valley (now Sanford) hospital in Sioux Falls throughout my career. I was also Associate Professor of Family Medicine for the University of South Dakota (now Sanford) School of Medicine. I now have emeritus standing with each of those.
Which people or places do you remember the most about your days in Iowa City?
Having done a four-year undergraduate pre-med curriculum in Iowa City there are far too many such memories to relate. However, perhaps the most outstanding was meeting my bride-to-be in Quantitative Analysis Chemistry my junior year. (We were married the week after undergrad commencement, the summer before med school.)
Productions at Hancher Auditorium and plays put on by the Art Department in the old theater were fond memories. And I haven’t forgotten the Purple Cow!
The medical student publication, “Borborygmi,” and, of course, Aesculapian Follies.

How has the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine contributed to your life/work:
The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine led me in a most positive direction, the metamorphosis from a tadpole to a frog, and gave me the chance to become a leapfrog. From mechanical engineering (gross work) to fine hand skills. Thus, I can help people restore vision, regain function, and transform their lives.
Favorite memory of your time at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine?
The clinical years. I thoroughly enjoyed rotating through the specialty areas. Many good friendships developed during that time. I continue to appreciate their friendship, support, and encouragement.
Most memorable professor and why?
Dean Woodrow Morris, Dean of Student Affairs, for his support and encouragement. Dr. Richard Caplan, Chairman of the Selection Committee and dermatologist, examined and reviewed my application. His interview lasted all afternoon with many “thorny” questions. Dr. Kenneth MacDonald was my pre-med advisor. These three men are the reason I got into medical school. Dr. Emory Warner (pathology) and Dr. Snyder

Which people or places do you remember the most about your days in Iowa City?
The Airliner and Joe’s Place in downtown Iowa City. After many long hours, on Fridays, I would walk up the hill to “quench” my brain. I remember gross anatomy lab where pigeons made “spooky” scratching sounds as they attempted to walk on the metal roof just outside of the lab.

I was 25 years old in 1973 after completing my internal medicine internship in Montreal, Canada. In those years I didn’t need to do a family practice residency, and started practice with Dr. Merselis in Audubon, Iowa, for one year, and then did solo practice doing obstetrics, ER, setting simple fractures, assisting at surgery, office, and hospital patients for another seven years until marrying Dr. Tan Creti in Denison, Iowa. I did family practice in Denison from 1981 to 2018.
Briefly describe your professional history, appointments (i.e., hospital, administration, academic, government) and significant accomplishments:
• Valedictorian of my high school class at City High in Iowa City in 1965
• Phi Beta Kappa & outstanding member of senior class at the University of Iowa, 1968
• Janet Glasgow Award as outstanding woman medical graduate in 1972
How has the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine contributed to your life/work?
They prepared me for my lifelong career as a general practitioner. With both my mother (who lived for 93 years) and my father (100 years) living one block from the University of Iowa Hospitals, I was always returning to see them and visit the constantly expanding hospital. My mother worked as a dietitian taking care of patients with anorexia nervosa, and my father was considered the father of bariatric surgery taking care of the morbidly obese.
Favorite memory of your time at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine?
Studying with my lifelong friend, roommate, and fellow classmate, Dr. Virginia White.
Most memorable professor and why?
Dr. Edward E. Mason, professor of bariatric surgery and my father. When I told him I thought I would be a nurse, he said, “Why not be a doctor? Don’t take orders from someone else, but you can give the orders.” He gave me the courage to apply to medical school as a woman doctor. There were five women out of the class of 150.
Which people or places do you remember the most about your days in Iowa City?
Doctors Metcalf and their excellent anatomy class as well as our dissecting buddies. [Faculty member] interviewing me to decide if I should be admitted as a woman to the class. Why should he admit someone who would eventually get married and have children and drop out of medicine? I told him I might take some time off after childbirth, but in the end would live longer than most men and contribute to medicine. I did take two to six weeks off after each of my three sons was born but I did practice medicine until I was 70 years old. Between my husband, Dr. David Marc Tan Creti, who graduated from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1969, and myself, we worked for 95 years doing family practice in rural Iowa.

Most memorable professor and why?
In Urology: Dr. Rubin Flocks... my group was sort of the last of the Flocks residents. We worked hard, but he worked harder. Created demands such as typed charts, back up charts, respect, humility, Sunday grand rounds, and more. Passed away during my residency years.

What is something your classmates might find uniquely interesting about you?
An odd hobby perhaps for a doctor is that I collect and enjoy antique tractors, especially John Deere and I have exhibited and participated in various antique tractor-related events. Built with help the only surviving John Deere Army A II tank built in 1940 and tested in 1941. It failed the Army testing and was never put in production. My hobby leads to my current interest in agriculture and farming with the related chemistry, machinery advances, economics, and marketing.

Donald Doty, MD, was two years out of his residency when he joined the faculty at the University of Iowa hospital. I was captivated by his confidence and unlimited energy. Briefly describe your clinical and research area(s) of interest: My practice changed over the years as sub-specialization evolved in radiology. I was based primarily in a large urban hospital for much of my career and I spent most of my time as an interventional radiologist. Over the last 10-15 years, that morphed into interventional oncology which I found very rewarding.
Briefly describe your professional history, appointments (i.e., hospital, administration, academic, government) and significant accomplishments.
I spent my entire career as a member of Jefferson Radiology. The bulk of my time was spent at Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, although I did have appointments at seven other hospitals in Connecticut and Massachusetts as well. I was instrumental in the introduction and subsequent adoption of multiple modes of minimally invasive locoregional cancer therapies including image directed tumor ablations, chemoembolization, and radioembolization.
Which awards/honors have you received during your medical career:
I received the 2010 Hartford Hospital Distinguished Service Award for “extraordinary and sustained contribution to the health and welfare of the citizens of our community...” That’s it for plaques, but the true lasting awards/rewards come from memories of the shared journey with so many colleagues and patients. Those rewards are the most treasured of all.
How has the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine contributed to your life/work?
I was well prepared to pursue a rewarding career.
What are your current activities and interests (hobbies, travels, etc.)?
My distance travel has been quite limited in recent years by family issues. Luckily, Connecticut offers a diverse topography that provides many options for photography (landscape, wildlife, sports, and street), my main source of enthusiasm these days. Always learning! I had the good sense to give up golf two years ago, and the courses of Connecticut are all the better for it.
