UNIVERSITY OF IOWA HEALTH CARE
DEPARTMENT OF NURSING SERVICES AND PATIENT CARE
2023 ANNUAL REPORT
Of the 6,000+ hospitals in the U.S., fewer than 1% (53 hospitals) have achieved five or more Magnet® designations

Advocacy for support of an organizational goal UI Health Care’s partnership with the University of Iowa College of Nursing and surrounding nursing schools to continue the pipeline of nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic
Magnet4Europe Partnership
For the past three years, the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care has actively participated in Magnet4Europe (M4E), which includes the U.S. Clinician Well-Being Study in conjunction with an international twinning hospital initiative. This ongoing commitment is aimed at cultivating a culture of excellence and continuous growth within the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care. In May 2023, three team members had a unique opportunity to embark on a journey to UI Health Care’s twin hospital, Kreiskliniken Reutlingen, located in Reutlingen, Germany. The trip provided invaluable insights and tools to reflect on current work environments in the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care and how to create spaces that promote efficiency and prioritize mental health and well-being.

M4E Learning Collaborative
JOURNEY TO GERMANY
June 1-2
More than 160 participants from Europe and the U.S. gathered to exchange valuable insights and best practices
l Three team members visited and toured twin hospital, Kreiskliniken Reutlingen, in Reutlingen, Germany
l Met with leaders of the hospital and shared about Magnet®
l Video message, from Kimberly D. Hunter, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, chief nurse executive, and Danilo Jahn, ADN, RN, staff nurse, about the Magnet® vision shared with hospital leaders
l Three nurses from Kreiskliniken Reutlingen visited UI Health Care in October 2023
l Continue monthly exchanges
Key Takeaways
l M4E is a big and important nursing initiative
l Americans have an opportunity to better understand the barriers faced by European health care systems
l Each European country met as part of collaborative groups to provide important insights to barriers they face in achieving Magnet® designation
l German hospitals have made incredible strides toward developing a national benchmarking structure
l The ANCC Pathway to Excellence Program® may be a better path for European hospitals than Magnet® designation
l Being in Europe facilitated a deeper understanding of successes and opportunities
l We need to meet our “twin” partners where they are to support their journey to Pathway to Excellence®/Magnet® designation
l Nursing staff from UI Health Care should be presenting more internationally; we are ahead of—or at least equal to—in accomplishments when compared with other U.S. Magnet® programs who presented at the M4E Learning Collaborative
l There are opportunities for Iowa Model© translation and expanding evidencebased practice reach
Workplace Safety
Over the past year, the Workplace Safety Initiative has concentrated on several critical areas. One key area of focus was providing support to team members who experienced workplace violence. To achieve this, the COPE team, a volunteer group of interprofessional team members trained to give emotional support after a stressful event, stepped in to aid those affected by such incidents, ensuring their emotional wellbeing was comprehensively addressed. Additionally, the organization transitioned to a new workplace safety training program in September. The new program, with its various training tier levels, expanded access to de-escalation training for frontline team members. This transition underscored a commitment to ongoing growth and improvement in safety practices as it aimed to equip team members with valuable skills to more effectively manage challenging situations. These combined efforts are aimed at helping foster a safer work environment, while at the same time nurturing a culture of growth and development within the organization.
INCIDENT REPORTING PLATFORM IMPROVEMENTS
l Created more efficient tracking of events and incidents
l Established a monitoring system for safety metrics
l Facilitated a higher level of accountability and continuous improvement
Better Teamwork, Better Care
Clinical care teams across UI Health Care have been working to improve efficiency, communication, and collaboration to continue providing patients with excellent care. Part of this initiative, known as Better Teamwork, Better Care, has focused on length of stay (LOS) and optimal discharge, which included geographic cohorting of patients and their care teams, daily huddles, and a new bed management process. Teams are now primarily concentrated on assigned units, so that nurses and other interprofessional team members have quicker access to providers caring for the patients on that specific unit. In addition to these unit-based improvements to communication and organization, the Admission and Transfer Center is now working directly with charge nurses to collaboratively make patient admission decisions. These combined efforts have streamlined communication, reduced LOS, and increased available beds, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to continuous growth and excellence in patient care.
Early data shows improved patient access through Better Teamwork, Better Care initiative.
AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY
With the addition of Better Teamwork, Better Care process improvements—including geographic cohorting and daily huddles— average length of stay (LOS) has decreased. As a result, more patients are being discharged from the adult acute internal medicine units and the medicine specialty unit.

Expanding Access to Care
Commitment to serving the health care needs of Iowans is a part of UI Health Care’s mission and a testament to continuous growth and progress, achieved through educating and training the next generation of health care professionals and expanding patient care facilities throughout the state. In the past year, UI Health Care has expanded its reach in several ways, including acquiring a family medicine practice and residency program in Sioux City. On a larger scale, the development of a new medical campus in North Liberty was initiated, along with preliminary planning for a state-of-the-art inpatient tower at 200 Hawkins Drive in Iowa City. These expansion efforts will further enhance local and regional access to safe, high-quality health care. The future facilities will house essential services and have dedicated spaces for patient care, research, and education to directly align with UI Health Care’s tripartite mission.
In November 2023, the sale of Mercy Iowa City to the University of Iowa was approved in bankruptcy court—marking the beginning of an affiliation between two health care organizations that have served the community and region for the past 150 years. Planning is underway for UI Health Care and Mercy Iowa City to become one in early 2024. The affiliation will preserve jobs, create new opportunities, and enhance access to high-quality care.
These strategic moves underscore the organization’s dedication to both excellence and growth to meet the health care needs of our communities.
30TH National Evidence-Based Practice Conference
Revolutionizing Evidence-Based Practice
In 2023, the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care celebrated 30 years of the National Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Conference. Even during unprecedented times, nurses and health care teams are challenged to innovate and deliver EBP in timely and meaningful ways. As champions of EBP, the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care continues to lead the way in promoting adoption across a diverse range of health care settings. This year’s conference, “Revolutionizing Evidence-Based Practice,” provided a platform to explore and address the critical challenges and opportunities in implementing best evidence to further enhance care quality.

Recognition and Awards
CNOR STRONG AND SPECIAL COMMENDATION
Nurses in the perioperative division received recognition for earning the certified perioperative nurse (CNOR) certification. The CNOR Strong designation, awarded by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI), is given to hospitals and health systems with greater than 50% of its operating room (OR) nursing staff CNOR-certified.
The CNOR Strong designation, which is conferred for one year, represents a commitment to excellence in perioperative nursing and outstanding patient care. Research suggests that nurses who earn the CNOR certification have greater confidence in their clinical practice, having validated their specialized knowledge in perioperative nursing, according to CCI. Certification is a key factor in the assurance of standards of knowledge, skills, and abilities in nursing specialty practice or to a specific role that contributes to better patient outcomes.
In addition, this same group of certified nurses in the perioperative division received Special Commendation from CCI for their volunteer service both within the profession of perioperative nursing and in the community.
