Eind 17de eeuw verscheen bij de Amsterdamse uitgever/cartograaf/graveur Frederick de Wit Theatrum ichnographicum omnium urbium et præcipuorum oppidorum Belgicarum XVII Provinciarum peraccurate delineatarum. (Perfecte aftekeningen der steden van de XVII Nederlandsche Provincien in platte gronden). Het is een zogenaamde stedenatlas, een genre dat erg populair was in de late 16de en 17de eeuw, met plattegronden van belangrijke steden uit die tijd. Dergelijke boeken werden uitgegeven door de grote atlasuitgevers van die dagen, in Nederland door Joan Blaeu, Johannes Janssonius en Frederick de Wit. Zij publiceerden atlassen van grote Europese steden, maar ook van Nederlandse. De Wit was de laatste die het genre uitgaf. Hiervoor gebruikte hij platen zowel van Blaeu als van Janssonius die hij na het opheffen van beide bedrijven gekocht had op veilingen in respectievelijk 1674 en 1694. De Wit gebruikte deze platen niet altijd klakkeloos, maar verbeterde ze: hij zette er de naam van de stad en een schaal op en vulde bepaalde onderdelen aan. Zo laat vergelijking met de platen van zijn voorgangers zien dat het centrum van de vestingstad Groenlo bij Blaeu niet ingetekend was maar bij De Wit wel, of dat De Wit een tafereeltje toevoegde aan de Janssoniusplaat van Utrecht. Soms liet hij ook een geheel nieuwe plaat maken, zoals voor Leiden.

eerste editie Frederick de Wit gaf het werk tweemaal uit, de eerste keer rond 1698. In deze 1ste editie zijn sommige platen enigszins aangepast, vele andere zijn ongewijzigd. Voor enkele steden gebruikte De Wit nieuwe plattegronden. De afbeeldingen in de tweede editie, die hij enige tijd later op de markt bracht, zijn nog verder bewerkt en aangepast. En door de kaarten van een aantal steden in de stedenatlassen van Blaeu en Janssonius te vergelijken met de nieuwe kaarten van De Wit, is de stadsontwikkeling en de ontwikkeling van de vestingwerken goed te zien. De atlassen van De Wit zijn minder frequent bewaard gebleven dan die van Blaeu. Van deze eerste uitgave zijn tot nu toe wereldwijd slechts vier exemplaren bekend. En geen enkele is zo fantastisch ingekleurd als dit exemplaar, wat het uniek maakt. Niet alleen de uitvoering, ook de samenstelling van een stedenatlas kon door de koper aan zijn eigen smaak aangepast worden. Daardoor is geen enkel exemplaar helemaal hetzelfde. Hier zijn bijvoorbeeld prenten en steden toegevoegd, terwijl plattegronden van enkele Zuid-Nederlandse steden weggelaten zijn. Zo zijn enkele prenten toegevoegd uit de omgeving van Utrecht, de vermoedelijke woonplaats van de koper, waarschijnlijk een lid van de familie Van Vollenhoven. In dit exemplaar zijn op 112 bladen met plattegronden en 11 bladen met gravures in totaal 151 steden uit de Lage Landen afgebeeld.

stedenkaarten Al vanaf de klassieke oudheid werden kaarten geproduceerd waarmee geprobeerd werd de wereld in beeld te brengen. De ontdekkingsreizen gaven een flinke boost aan de cartografie en Amsterdam – na de val van Antwerpen een centrum voor verkenningstochten naar nieuwe handelsroutes – werd een belangrijk productiecentrum van kaarten en atlassen. Naast kaarten van landen en gewesten, kon uiteraard ook een gedetailleerde plattegrond van een stad gemaakt worden. In de Nederlanden was een van de eersten die zich hiermee bezighield de NoordNederlandse cartograaf Jacob van Deventer (ca. 1500-1575). Hij kreeg in 1558 van Filips II de opdracht om alle steden in de Nederlanden in kaart te brengen, waardoor de Spaanse vorst goed inzicht kreeg in deze gewesten. Zijn kaarten waren militair geheim en zijn nooit in druk verschenen.

De eerste gedrukte uitgave van een stedenatlas was Civitates Orbis Terrarum van Georg Braun en Frans Hogenberg. Dit werk werd in 6 delen uitgegeven in Keulen tussen 1572 en 1618 en bevat 363 platen met 543 afbeeldingen van steden uit Europa en zelfs uit andere werelddelen (Afrika, West- en Oost-Indië en Turkije). Dit werk was een voorbeeld voor de Amsterdamse kaartenuitgevers Janssonius en Blaeu.

de zeventiende-eeuwse stadsplattegrond Het is intrigerend hoe mensen lang voor de komst van het vliegtuig toch in staat waren om kaarten te maken. Met de uitvinding van het perspectief en vooral van de landmeetkundige methoden kregen cartografen de beschikking over technieken die nauwkeurigere kaarten mogelijk maakten. Voor het maken van een stadsplattegrond werd de zogenaamde ‘veelhoeksmeting’ gebruikt. De landmeter loopt door de straten van de stad en meet de lengte van de rechte stukken door het afpassen (tellen van het aantal stappen) of met een meetketting. Bij bochten, zijstraten en kruisingen worden de richtingen met een kompas opgenomen of worden de hoeken tussen de straten gemeten met een hoekmeetinstrument. Op deze manier krijg je een netwerk van lijnstukken die het ‘skelet’ van de stadsplattegrond weergeven. In dit netwerk worden de huizen, grachten, vestingwerken en dergelijke ingetekend.

De bijzondere gebouwen van een stad worden zodanig getekend dat het lijkt alsof je ze van schuin boven bekijkt, in vogelvluchtperspectief. Om zo’n beeld van een gebouw te maken werden schetsen gemaakt van de gevels en werd de lengte en hoogte bepaald. Met deze gegevens kon het ‘driedimensionale’ plaatje van het gebouw geconstrueerd worden. Het plaatje is dan op de juiste plaats in de plattegrond getekend. Het komt voor dat het gebouw wat gedraaid wordt om het beter uit te laten komen.

A la fin du siècle XVIIe paraissait chez Frederick de Wit, éditeur, cartographe et graveur d’Amsterdam, son Theatrum ichnographicum omnium urbium et præcipuorum oppidorum Belgicarum XVII Provinciarum peraccurate delineatarum (Le théâtre des plans de toutes les villes qui sont situées dans les XVII provinces du Pays Bas parfaictement deseignées). Cette œuvre est ce qu’on appelle un atlas de villes, un genre très populaire à la fin du XVIe siècle et au XVIIe siècle. Ces atlas des principales villes de l’époque ont été publiés aux Pays-Bas par de grands éditeurs d’atlas comme Joan Blaeu Johannes Janssonius et Frederick de Wit. Ils ont publié des atlas urbains de grandes villes européennes, mais aussi de villes néerlandaises. Frederick de Wit est le dernier à avoir édité ce genre de publication.

Pour ce faire, il a utilisé à la fois les plaques de Blaeu et celles de Janssonius, qu’il avait acquises lors de ventes publiques, respectivement en 1674 et 1694, après la dissolution des deux sociétés. Frederick de Wit n’a pas toujours utilisé ces plaques telles quelles, mais il les a souvent améliorées en y ajoutant le nom de la ville et une échelle, et en en complétant certaines parties. Une comparaison avec les plaques de ses prédécesseurs montre par exemple que le centre de la ville fortifiée de Groenlo n’apparaissait pas chez Blaeu mais bien chez De Wit, ou que celui-ci avait ajouté une scène à la plaque de Janssonius représentant Utrecht. Il lui est même arrivé de faire faire de nouvelles plaques, comme par exemple pour Leyde.

première édition Frederick de Wit a édité cet atlas à deux reprises. Une première fois aux alentours de 1698. Dans cette première édition, certaines plaques ont été légèrement adaptées, mais d’autres sont restées inchangées. Pour quelques villes, De Wit a utilisé de nouvelles cartes. Dans la seconde édition, qu’il a mise sur le marché un peu plus tard, les représentations sont davantage travaillées et adaptées. En comparant les cartes d’un certain nombre de villes figurant dans les atlas urbains de Blaeu et de Janssonius aux nouvelles cartes réalisées par Frederick de Wit, on se rend compte du développement des villes et de l’évolution des fortifications. Les atlas urbains de Frederick de Wit ont été moins fréquemment conservés que ceux de Blaeu. A ce jour, seuls quatre exemplaires de cette première édition sont connus dans le monde entier. Et aucun autre n’est aussi joliment colorié que cet exemplaire. La réalisation mais aussi la composition d’un tel atlas urbain pouvait être adaptée au goût de l’acheteur. Chaque exemplaire est par conséquent unique. Cet exemplaire s’est vu par exemple ajouter quelques gravures et villes, tandis que des cartes de certaines villes du Sud des Pays-Bas ont été omises. Des illustrations des environs d’Utrecht y ont été ajoutées, ce qui porte à croire que l’acheteur habitait cette région. On présume qu’il s’agit d’un membre de la famille Van Vollenhoven. Cet atlas illustre au total 151 villes des Pays-Bas et compte 112 pages de cartes et 11 pages de gravures.

cartes des villes Dès l’Antiquité classique, des cartes ont été produites dans une tentative de représenter le monde. Les voyages de découverte ont fortement stimulé la cartographie. Amsterdam - qui, après la chute d’Anvers, était devenu un centre de reconnaissance des nouvelles routes commerciales - était alors un éminent centre de production de cartes et d’atlas. Outre les cartes nationales et régionales, il était évidemment possible aussi de réaliser un plan détaillé d’une ville. Pour les Pays-Bas, l’ un des premiers à s’atteler à cette tâche a été le cartographe néerlandais Jacob van Deventer (vers 1500-1575). En 1558, ce dernier a été chargé par Philippe II de cartographier toutes les villes des Pays-Bas, afin de permettre au souverain espagnol d’avoir un bon aperçu de ces régions. Etant de caractère militaire, ses cartes n’ont jamais été publiées.

La première édition imprimée d’un atlas urbain a été le Civitates Orbis Terrarum de Georg Braun et Frans Hogenberg. Cette œuvre a été éditée en six parties, à Cologne, entre 1572 et 1618 et compte 363 plaques comportant 543 illustrations de villes d’Europe et d’autres parties du monde (l’Afrique, les Indes orientales et occidentales et la Turquie). Cet atlas a servi de modèle aux cartographes amstellodamois, Janssonius et Blaeu.

plan de ville du xviie siècle Il est intéressant de constater que l’homme a été capable de réaliser des cartes bien avant l’invention des engins volants. Avec la découverte de la perspective et surtout des méthodes d’arpentage, les cartographes disposaient de techniques qui rendaient possible la réalisation de cartes plus précises.

Pour la création d’une carte urbaine, on utilisait ce qu’on appelait la « polygonation ». Dans cette méthode de relevé topographique par mesures angulaires, l’arpenteur-géomètre parcourt les rues de la ville et mesure la longueur des parties droites en arpentant (c’est-à-dire en comptant le nombre de pas) ou en utilisant une chaîne d’arpenteur. Dans les virages, les rues transversales et les carrefours, il relève les directions à l’aide d’un compas ou mesure les angles entre les rues avec un gionomètre. On obtient ainsi un réseau de segments de droite servant de « squelette » de la carte urbaine. Les maisons, les canaux, les fortifications et autres informations sont ensuite dessinés dans ce réseau. Les constructions particulières d’une ville sont dessinées de telle façon qu’on a l’impression de les regarder de haut et de biais. Cette méthode porte le nom de perspective à vol d’oiseau. Pour y parvenir, on faisait des croquis des façades et on en déterminait la longueur et la hauteur. Ces données, permettaient de construire l’image « tridimensionnelle » du bâtiment. Cette image était ensuite dessinée à l’endroit adéquat de la carte. Le bâtiment a parfois été légèrement incliné afin de mieux le mettre en évidence.

At the end of the seventeenth century, Theatrum ichnographicum omnium urbium et præcipuorum oppidorum Belgicarum XVII Provinciarum peraccurate delineatarum (Perfect drawings of the ground plans of the cities of the XVII Provinces of the Netherlands) was published by printer / cartographer / engraver Frederick de Wit in Amsterdam. This work is a so-called city atlas, a genre that was extremely popular in the late 16th and 17th centuries, containing ground plans of important cities at the time. These atlases were printed by the great specialist publishers of the day, in The Netherlands Joan Blaeu, Johannes Janssonius and Frederick de Wit. They all published atlases of not only the major cities of Europe, but also of the Low Countries. De Wit was the last exponent of the genre, often using plates crafted by both Blaeu and Janssonius, which he bought at auctions in 1674 and 1694 respectively, after the closure of both printing houses. De Wit did not use these plates mindlessly, but improved them: he added the name of the city and the scale, and completed the mapping of certain districts. A comparison with the plates of his predecessors shows that Blaeu had not plotted the centre of the fortress town Groenlo, as De Wit did, or that De Wit added a scene to the Janssonius plate of Utrecht. On some occasions, he also commissioned a brand new plate, as with the town of Leiden.

first edition Frederick de Wit published this work two times, of which the first was around 1698. In this first edition, some plates had been somewhat adjusted, though many others had been left unaltered. For some of the cities, De Wit also used new ground plans. The illustrations in the second edition, which was issued some time later, show further adjustments and alterations. A comparison of a number of maps from the city atlases of Blaeu and Janssonius to the new ones published by de Wit clearly shows the development of cities and fortifactions. Fewer copies have been kept of the De Wit atlases than of those by Blaeu. Of this first edition, we only know of four remaining copies in the entire world, of which none are as beautifully coloured as this one, which makes it one of a kind. Not only the decoration, but also the compilation of a city atlas could be adjusted to suit the taste of the buyer. As a result, no two copies are the same. Some illustrations and cities have been added to this edition, while maps of a number of cities in the Southern Netherlands have been excluded. Some illustrations of the surroundings of Utrecht have been added, supposedly the town where the buyer lived, who was likely to be a member of the Van Vollenhoven family. The atlas contains 112 pages with ground plans and 11 pages with engravings, illustrating no fewer than 151 different town in the Low Countries.

city maps Since classical antiquity, maps have been produced in an attempt to plot the entire world. The great voyages of discovery boosted the art of cartography and Amsterdam – a centre for the exploration of new trade routes since the fall of Antwerp – soon became an important production hub for maps and atlases. Next to maps of countries and regions, detailed ground plans of a city were of course also produceable. One of the first to do so in the Low Countries was the Dutch catrographer Jacob van Deventer (ca. 1500-1575). In 1558, Philip II commissioned him to map all towns in the Netherlands, so the Spanish king could gain insight into these regions. These maps were a military secret and and a result thereof never published.

The first printed edition of a city atlas was Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg. the seventeenth century city plan It is intriguing how people were already able to make maps well before the invention of planes. With the discovery of perspective and, above all, the development of land surveying methods, cartographers had techniques at their disposal which enabled the production of detailed maps.

To plot a city map, the so-called ‘compass traverse’ was used. The surveyor walked through the streets of the city, measuring the lengths of the straight sections with a measuring chain or by counting the number of his steps. For bends in the roads, side streets and crossroads, the directions were measured with a compass or the angles with a specific instrument. This gave rise to a network of straight sections serving as the ‘skeleton’ of the city plan. Within this network, houses, canals, fortifications and the like were plotted. Special buildings were depicted in such a manner that it seemed as if they were viewed slantwise from above, from a ‘bird’s-eye’ perspective. Therefore, a sketch was made of the facades, and the length and height of the structure were measured.

These data enabled the construction of a ‘three-dimensional’ image of the building, which was then superimposed on the correct location on the ground plan. Sometimes the alignment of the building was slightly adjusted, so it could be shown to its best advantage.

Amsterdam was in de zeventiende eeuw de belangrijkste stad van de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden, hoewel de stad in de middeleeuwse rangorde van de steden van Holland op de vijfde plaats kwam, na Dordrecht, Haarlem, Delft en Leiden. Amsterdam is dus ook pas als vijfde stad van Holland in de atlas opgenomen. Het belang van de stad liet De Wit in zijn stedenatlas tot uiting komen door er zeven pagina’s prenten aan te besteden, meer dan bij enige andere stad in zijn atlas.

De Wits plattegrond van Amsterdam van ca. 1690 laat zien hoe Amsterdam na de Vierde Uitleg van 1663 de beroemde vorm van de halve cirkel gekregen heeft. Volgebouwd was het nieuwe gebied nog niet.

Vooral ten oosten van de Amstel staan er nog nauwelijks huizen.

Langs de onderrand van de kaart is een profiel van Amsterdam getekend, gezien vanaf het IJ. Dit profiel is omgeven door allegorische voorstellingen die de grootsheid van Amsterdam als zeehandelsstad verheerlijken. Bovenop zit Mercurius, de god van de handel, met het wapenschild van Amsterdam op zijn schoot. Hij wordt geflankeerd door putti met symbolen van de scheepvaart: een globepaar, een zeekaart, een jakobsstaf en een dieptelood.

Aan de beide zijkanten staan voorstellingen van de vier continenten.

Links staan Europa op de stier en Azië met een wierookvat en zittend op een kameel. Rechts zien we Amerika met pijl en boog, en Afrika met schorpioen, leeuw en hoorn des overvloeds. Het ontwerp van deze voorstellingen is van Adriaen van de Velde. Bovenin op de kaart zien

Au XVIIe siècle, Amsterdam était la ville la plus importante de la République des Provinces-Unies, bien qu’elle ne vînt qu’à la cinquième place dans la hiérarchie médiévale des villes de Hollande, après Dordrecht, Haarlem, Delft et Leyde. C’est la raison pour laquelle Amsterdam n’apparaît dans cet atlas que comme la cinquième ville de Hollande. Dans son atlas, De Wit souligne toutefois l’importance de la ville en lui consacrant sept pages illustrées, ce qui la met plus en évidence que les autres.

La carte d’Amsterdam de Frederick de Wit, datant des alentours de 1690, montre comment la ville s’est vu attribuer sa forme bien connue en demi-cercle après sa quatrième grande extension (« Vierde Uitleg ») de 1663. A l’époque, cette nouvelle zone était encore très peu urbanisée, en particulier la partie située à l’est du fleuve Amstel. Le long du bord inférieur de la carte se trouve un dessin de profil d’Amsterdam, vu depuis le fleuve IJ. Ce dessin est entouré de représentations allégoriques glorifiant la grandeur d’Amsterdam en tant que ville de commerce maritime. Au-dessus se trouve Mercure, le dieu du commerce, portant sur ses genoux le blason d’Amsterdam. Il est flanqué de putti avec des symboles de navigation : une paire de globes, une carte maritime, un bâton de Jacob et une lance de sonde.

De chaque côté figurent des représentations des quatre continents. A gauche, on voit l’Europe assise sur un taureau et l’Asie assise sur un chameau, tenant un encensoir. A droite, on voit l’Amérique avec arc et flèche, et l’Afrique avec un scorpion, un lion et la corne d’abondance.

Ces représentations sont l’œuvre d’Adriaen van de Velde. Au-dessus de la carte, on voit les armoiries de la ville d’Amsterdam ainsi qu’un écusson avec une cogue, le navire qui a apporté la prospérité à Amsterdam et qui est donc l’ancien symbole de la ville. La carte est très détaillée.

Les légendes des rues et des ruelles comptent pas moins de 354 numéros.

By the seventeenth century, Amsterdam had become the most important city in the Republic of the United Netherlands, although in medieval times it had ranked as fifth, following Dordrecht, Haarlem, Delft and Leiden. This explains why Amsterdam is only included as the fifth of Holland’s cities in this atlas. Nevertheless, De Wit highlighted its importance by dedicating seven prints thereto – more than for any other city in the volume.

De Wit’s ground plan of Amsterdam dates from ca. 1690 and shows how the city obtained its celebrated semi-circular form after the Fourth Expansion of 1663. The new area had not yet been fully urbanized, especially not in the area of the east of the Amstel River.

Along the lower rim of the map, a profile of Amsterdam was drawn, as seen from the IJ. This drawing is surrounded by allegorical representations, which glorify the city’s reputation as a major trading port. At the top sits Mercury, the god of trade, with Amsterdam’s coat of arms in his lap. He is flanked by putti holding navigation symbols: a globe-pair, a sea chart, a Jacob’s staff and a plumb line.

On both sides, depictions of the four continents occur. On the left, we can see Europe on a bull and Asia with a censer on a camel. On the right, we can see America with bow and arrow and Africa with a scorpion, a lion and the horn of plenty. Adriaen van de Velde designed these elements. At the top of the map, we see Amsterdam’s coat of arms and a shield depicting a cog, the type of sailing ship that brought the city prosperity and therefore its oldest symbol. The map is highly detailed.

Schaal ca. 1:7500 | Noord linksonder De oorsprong van Brussel, de hoofdstad van Brabant en de Zuidelijke Nederlanden, is te vinden op een eilandje in het moerassige dal van de Zenne – ‘Bruocsella’ – dorp bij het broek. Op de plattegrond van Janssonius uit 1657, die De Wit ongewijzigd in zijn atlas opnam, is de rivier de Zenne nog te zien. In het zuidwesten komt het riviertje de stad in door een onbenoemde poort, waar later het Brusselse Zuidstation is gebouwd (26, ‘Introitus Sennae’, Zennes inkomst). Ín de stad komt een zijriviertje, de Zenne van Ransfort, erbij en vormt de eilandjes, met op één ervan de oude kern van de stad. De Sint-Gorikskerk (5. ‘T.S. Gaugerici’) staat op dat eiland. Ten slotte stroomt de Zenne bij de Lakense poort in het noorden de stad weer uit (27, ‘Exitus Sennae’, Zennes uitgang). In de negentiende eeuw is de rivier overkapt en nu nergens in Brussel meer te zien. Een tweede waterloop die Brussel in het noorden verlaat, is het Kanaal van Willebroek, aangelegd in 1560-1561. De Brusselse haven lag in het centrum van de stad bij de Sint-Katelijnekerk (8).

Thans zijn haven en havenkanaal binnen de ring gedempt, maar in het stratenplan goed herkenbaar.

Het aantal bijzondere gebouwen en plaatsen in Brussel is te groot om hier te bespreken. We beperken ons tot enkele zeer bekende punten.

In het midden de Grote Markt met stadhuis (11, ‘Urbis Curiae’) en Broodhuis (12, ‘Praetorium a pane’). Het tweede grote plein is de Grote Zavel (‘Forum Equorum’) met ten oosten daarvan het Egmontpaleis (59). Bovenin op de kaart is het koninklijk paleis (1, ‘Palatium Regium’) met grote tuin getekend.

De stad is in de tweede helft van de veertiende eeuw omgeven door een vijfhoekige vestingwal, waarbij later achttien bastions zijn aangelegd.

Deze wal gaf de stad voldoende ruimte, wat te zien is aan de vele tuinen die nog in de stad gelegen zijn. Eind negentiende eeuw is op de plaats van deze wal de bekende Brusselse vijfhoek van boulevards aangelegd.

In de onderhoeken staat de Latijnse verklaring van de cijfers, in cartouche bekroond door wapenschilden. Rechts staat het wapen van de stad Brussel, Sint-Michaël die de duivel verslaat. Links het ingewikkeld samengestelde wapen van koning Filips IV. De kaart van Janssonius is een kopie van die van Blaeu uit 1649.

Bruxelles, la capitale du Brabant et des Pays-Bas méridionaux se trouve sur une petite île de la vallée marécageuse de la Senne – « Bruocsella » - qui signifie village près du marais. Sur la carte de Janssonius datant de 1657, que De Wit a reprise telle quelle dans son atlas sans y apporter aucune modification, la Senne est encore visible. La petite rivière entre dans la ville par le sud-ouest, par une porte sans nom à l’emplacement de laquelle sera plus tard construite la gare de Bruxelles-Midi (26, « Introitus Sennae », entrée de la Senne). Dans la ville, elle est rejointe par un affluent, la Senne de Ransfort, qui forme les petites îles sur l’une desquelles se trouve le coeur de la vieille ville. L’église Saint-Géry (5. « T.S. Gaugerici ») se dresse sur cette île. La Senne quitte la ville à la hauteur de la porte de Laeken, située au nord (27, « Exitus Sennae », sortie de la Senne). La rivière a été recouverte XIXe siècle et, de nos jours, on ne la voit plus nulle part dans Bruxelles. Le canal de Willebroek, aménagé en 1560-1561, est un second cours d’eau qui quitte Bruxelles par le nord. Le port de Bruxelles était situé dans le centreville, à proximité de l’église Sainte-Catherine (8). A l’heure actuelle, tant le port que le canal portuaire ont été comblés à l’intérieur du ring, mais ils sont bien reconnaissables dans le plan des rues.

Le nombre de bâtiments et d’endroits d’intérêt particulier à Bruxelles est trop important pour pouvoir les citer tous ici. Nous nous limitons donc à quelques lieux très connus. Au centre, la Grand Place avec l’hôtel de ville (11, « Urbis Curiae ») et la Maison du Roi (12, « Praetorium a pane »). La deuxième grande place est celle du Grand Sablon (« Forum Equorum ») avec, à l’est, le Palais d’Egmont (59). En haut de la carte se trouve le Palais Royal (1, « Palatium Regium ») doté d’un grand jardin.

Durant la seconde moitié du XIVe siècle, la ville était ceinte d’un rempart pentagonal auquel ont été ajoutés plus tard dix-huit bastions. Ce rempart offrait suffisamment d’espace au développement urbain , comme en témoignent les nombreux jardins encore présents dans la ville. C’est à l’endroit de ce rempart qu’ont été aménagés, à la fin du XIXe siècle, les cinq boulevards formant le célèbre Pentagone bruxellois.

Dans les coins inférieurs, une légende en latin expliquant les différents chiffres est placée dans une cartouche couronnée par des blasons. A droite figure l’armoirie de la ville de Bruxelles Saint-Michel terrassant le démon. A gauche se trouve l’armoirie complexe du roi Philippe IV. La carte de Janssonius est une copie de celle de Blaeu datant de 1649.

The origins of Brussels, the capital city of both Brabant and the Southern Netherlands, are to be found on an island settlement in the swampy valley of the Zenne river.‘ – Bruocsella’ – the village by the brook. On the Janssonius city plan of 1657, which de Wit included unaltered in his own atlas, the Zenne can still be seen. The river enters the city from the south-west through an unnamed gate, where Brussels South Station would later be built (26, ‘Introitus Sennae’, Zenne’s entrance). A tributary, the Zenne van Ransfort, joins the main stream in the city, creating a series of islands, one of which contained the old city centre. St. Gorik’s Church (5. ‘T.S. Gaugerici’) is situated on this island. The Zenne leaves the city to the north through the Laken Gate (27, ‘Exitus Sennae’, the exit of the Zenne). During the 19th century, the river was tunnelled in and it is now not observable above ground in Brussels. A second waterway that leaves Brussels in the north is the Willebroek Canal, which was dug in 1560-61. Brussels harbour was in the centre of the city, close to the St. Katelijne Church (8). Nowadays, both the harbour and its canal have been filled up within the perimeter of the ring road, though they are clearly distinguishable on the map. All special buildings and places in Brussels cannot be discussed, so we will confine ourselves to several of the most famous ones. In the centre, the Market Square, with its town hall (11, ‘Urbis Curiae’) and the Bread House (12, ‘Praetorium a pane’). The second large square is the Grote Zavel (‘Forum Equorum’), to the east of which stands the Egmont Palace (59). At the top of the map we can see the Royal Palace (1, ‘Palatium Regium’) with its large gardens.

During the second half of the fourteenth century, Brussels was ringed by a pentagonal wall, to which eighteen bastions were later added. This wall still left plenty of space within the city, as can still be seen by the many gardens within the centre. At the end of the nineteenth century, the five famous boulevards of Brussels were constructed at the site of this wall.

In the bottom corners, a legend in Latin explains the numbers, contained in a cartouche crowned with various coats of arms. On the right we can see the coat of arms of the City of Brussels, St. Michael, slaying the devil. On the left, the complex composed coat of arms of King Philip IV. The Janssonius map was a copy of Blaeu’s from 1649.
