When my father was a giant Pieter van Oudheusden & Inge Bogaerts • A touching story about growing up and letting go • With attractive illustrations by Inge Bogaerts • The perfect Father’s Day gift

How a girl discovers that her father is not a giant, but a human being like everyone else. On his shoulders my father carried me around. I saw the whole world: the people, the streets, the woods and, in the distance, the sea. ‘You’re taller than I am now!’ he would yell, and he would laugh. He roared with laughter as thunderous as a thunderstorm in the mountains. My laugh chimed as loose change that fell out of his pocket to the ground. He threw me up into the sky, and again, and again. Without wings I flew through the sky.

Inge Bogaerts works as a freelance illustrator for various magazines and publishers. In 2008, she won the Dutch ‘Art Award’. Pieter van Oudheusden primarily wrote picture books and comics and also translated comics into Dutch. He worked as an editor for various comics magazines and gave workshops in screenwriting.

Sometimes a bone breaks. That hurts a lot. If a bone in your arm breaks, your arm has to be in plaster. And if a bone breaks in your leg, your leg has to be in plaster. The plaster cast keeps your arm or your leg in place. Like this, the bone gets the time to grow back together.

My grandpa is a tree Kim Crabbeels illustrations by Ingrid Godon • A wonderful story about the deep bond between a little boy and his grandfather • Full of humour and subtle metaphors, Kim Crabeels manages to introduce the difficult theme of dementia to young children • With beautiful illustrations by award-winning illustrator Ingrid Godon My Grandpa is a tree. He is big and strong. Just like a 100-year-old oak. You cannot simply push him over. I tried. My Grandpa laughed and lifted me off the ground, like I was a feather. I yelled: ‘Wiiiiii!’, and ‘What kind of bird am I, Grandpa?’ ‘My little, crazy sparrow’, he said.

Godon has reinvented herself. With this book, she really has reached her full potential as an illustrator. - The ‘Boekenpauw’ jury on her award for ‘Ik denk’ Kim Crabeels always wanted to become a writer when she was a child. And a vet, a lawyer or even a cook on a pirate ship. Eventually, she became a mother of three and started teaching Dutch. Books were never far away, although she hardly had the time to read any. When she started to read to her own children, Kim decided to start writing children’s books herself as well. Ingrid Godon’s reputation precedes herself, even internationally. Her books have been published in several languages, and she has been awarded a number of prizes, including the ‘Boekenpauw’.

Cafard The odyssey of a Belgian armoured corps in WW I Jan Bultheel • A thrilling story based on true facts • Top-quality graphic novel and animation film • A captivating story, drawn in an original style The incredible story of a Belgian armoured corps during World War I finally gets the attention it deserves in Jan Bultheel’s Cafard, an animated film and outstanding graphic novel. ‘Cafard’, French for ‘cockroach’, was the pet name which the members of the Belgian Expeditionary Corps of Armoured Cars gave to their seemingly indestructible armoured vehicles. However, ‘cafard’ also means ‘homesickness’, which gives the word an appropriate dual meaning as that is a feeling these men were highly familiar with during their long trip along the Russian front and through the United States. This wonderful graphic novel uses historical facts in a fictional story and follows the Corps through the eyes of wrestling champion Jean Mordant, who

is on a revenge mission after his daughter was brutally raped by German soldiers. Includes an epilogue which distinguishes fact from fiction. Jan Bultheel is a director and producer. He made the successful animation series Hazentem for Belgian children’s network Ketnet and TF1. His production company ‘Pix & Motion’ received multiple awards. Cafard is his first full-length film. Amira Daoudi studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts Sint-Lukas in Brussels and currently works as an artistic director specializing in film poster graphics. Seppe Van den Berghe is an illustrator, musician, strip cartoonist and graphic designer.

Judocus? Yes. I’m bored. Good for you. What? Being bored is good for you. That’s what mommy always says, isn’t it? What does she know about it? She is never bored. Maybe she does it when nobody is watching. She doesn’t have time for that.

Evelien De Vlieger writes books for both younger and older children: picture books, informative books and reading books. She was awarded the ‘Boekenwelp’ prize. Sabine Clement studied Illustrative Design at the Sint-Lucas College in Antwerp. For her work, she has been awarded the ‘Boekenpauw’ prize and the ‘Gouden Uil’.

Lina and Judocus talk about the world and life in general. They share their knowledge and views, and what they don’t know, they make up, in an open and spontaneous way. Recognizable for every parent, with great tongue-in-cheek humour.

Mist in my head Kim Crabeels • An enthralling youth novel about the friendship between a younger girl and an elderly woman • A touching story, written with a great sense of humour • A thrilling read About young love, neurotic mothers, demented elderly and challenging friendships. Berthe is struggling with herself. She is secretly in love with the handsome Vince, and she has the feeling that she is missing out on everything: parties, camps, boys … The contrast with her driven friend Lexie could not be bigger.

Kim Crabeels always wanted to become a writer when she was a child. And a vet, a lawyer or even a cook on a pirate ship. Eventually, she became a mother of three and started teaching Dutch. Books were never far away, although she hardly had the time to read any. When she started to read to her own children, Kim decided to start writing children’s books herself as well.

When Vince and Lexie go on scout camp together, Berthe spends her time in a nursing home, where she goes for little walks with elderly people. She gets to know Elsa, a woman suffering from dementia. One day, she finds a box with letters and pictures, and gradually discovers Elsa’s life story. The story does not have a happy ending, but Berthe may be able to change that.

Helped by memories of her mother and long walks through town, wounds are healed and she gradually fulfils her dream of becoming an artist. I think about my mum every day. Every day. And every time I see my father’s girlfriend, I think about my mum. Even on Mondays I think about my mum. When I’m in bed, I think about my mum. Before going to bed, I think about my mum. When I wake up, I think about my mum. When I dream, I dream about my mum. In colour and black-and-white. Even when I’m eating ice cream I think about my mum. Me, the one who forgets everything. Or almost everything.
