Sleepless Magnus Kim Crabeels illustrations by Sebastiaan Van Doninck • A funny debut by Kim Crabeels • With colourful and attractive illustrations by Sebastiaan Van Doninck • The first part of a new series about a special, yet very recognizable boy

Magnus cannot sleep, even though he is so tired. He hears too much noise, even when his ears are covered. Outside it’s quiet. The Monster doesn’t utter a sound. It closed its fifteen scary eyes and laid its head on the ground. Magnus’ mouth says ‘whoeeeaaaahmmmrr’. A yawning lion roars in there! But mom can tame this beast and bravely starts to read a book. She reads and reads and reads and reads and … Suddenly the sound has stopped.

Kim Crabeels always wanted to become a writer when she was a child. And a vet, a lawyer or even a cook on a pirate ship. Eventually, she became a Dutch teacher and a mother of three. Books were never far away, even though sometimes she had so little time to read them. When she started to read for her own children, Kim decided to write children’s books herself. Sebastiaan Van Doninck studied illustration at the Sint-Lucas College in Antwerp. He has already illustrated several children’s books and regularly works for magazines, such as Weekend Knack.

Something Geert De Kockere illustrations by Inge Bogaerts • The story of creation, rewritten especially for children • Poetic writing style: crystal-clear prose • With vibrant, colourful illustrations And then something remarkable happened: Something bumped into Something Else. Something mumbled something. And Something Else mumbled something back. After mumble after mumble and gesture after gesture they started to understand each other better. After a while it even sounded as if they had known each other for a very long time.

Geert De Kockere worked as a journalist for De Standaard and Het Nieuwsblad. He has written more than 75 books for kids, young adults and adults. Inge Bogaerts works as a freelance illustrator for various magazines and publishers, such as Weekend Knack, Okkie and BoekieBoekie. In 2008 she won the Dutch Art Award.

Something is the story about the beginning of everything. It’s a story about the creation of the world, of people and of language. Something captures all stages of evolution in one book. A great story to explain a child where it comes from.

REQUEST I am a very special duckling Really, there is only one like me I dance, I sing I laugh and spring On one leg if you think it’s necessary You see, I am truly exceptional Far from conventional I swim and walk I quack, my call Is the loudest of any on the entire channel And yes, I am also gorgeous So with hunters I must be cautious I have two rather nicely toned buttocks Everyone will be licking their chops When I arrive on the scene both daring and decorous

Moreover I am smart, handsome, funny and fine Always modest, without design Always happy, never depressed For that will make you love me less Although, I am faced with a single problem That I am none of these things to anyone else Hence this request At the start of this text: Who wants to be my sweetheart? My grandmother is made from gingerbread Evelien De Vlieger illustrations by Sabien Clement • The perfect grandfather-and-grandmother gift book • Humorous read-aloud book • With recipes for milk buns and letter biscuits to prepare together with grandma • Nominated for the ‘Boekenpauw’ 2013 A surprising collection of new stories and poems about grandmothers and grandfathers who know how to handle iPads and sports cars but still have a heart of gingerbread.

With a handful of words Evelien De Vlieger knows how to bring her characters to life, create an emotional ambience and still tell a compelling story. – Bas Maliepaard in Trouw

Read the funny adventures of Lina and Judocus; get to know the nimblest grandmother, the daftest grandfather, the most forgetful grandmother, the fastest grandfather, …

Evelien De Vlieger writes books for young and older children: picture books, informative books and novels. Her novels Staying over and Knit with me were nominated for the ‘Gouden Uil Jeugdliteratuurprijs’. Knit with me was also nominated for the ‘Gouden Lijst’.

Eleven grandmothers and grandfathers… I thought that was quite enough. At school we’re learning about family trees. And that requires the filling out of forms. I need more, I told my teacher. A whole pile! If I lay them all out next to each other, I’ll have a forest. Then I can swing from tree to tree, like a monkey.

Sabien Clement studied illustration and graphic design at the Sint Lucas instituut in Antwerp. Her work has already been awarded the ‘Boekenpauw’ and the ‘Gouden Uil’.

Birdie Laure Van den Broeck • An unusual crossover novel, told from teenage and adult perspectives • A story built on intriguing characters, brimming with humour and suspense Beatrice Munday, nicknamed Birdie, is fifteen and quietly struggling with the absence of her father. She lives alone with her mother Felicity in a seaport on England’s south coast. Felicity had Birdie at a very young age, and being impulsive, irresponsible and obsessed with her looks, she sometimes seems less mature than her shy, withdrawn daughter. Moreover, she has a sneaky lover with whom she is secretly planning to start a new life in Spain. Worried about her daughter’s reaction, she hasn’t found the courage to tell Birdie about any of it. A sudden hiccup from Felicity’s past throws things into a jumble: on the island where she grew up, her father has passed away.

The day of the funeral comes around, and Birdie, Felicity, her estranged sister Alice and Felicity’s lover set out to make the pilgrimage to the island. Tensions start to broil, slumbering emotions stir awake and a massive storm whips things to a head... Birdie opens doors for teenage readers that generally stay shut, and displays a depth of psychology that is unusual on YA-shelves. From the very beginning to the end, a small cast of intriguing characters sweep the reader along in a tale of inarticulate first love, fundamental loneliness, with a great deal of miscommunications along the way. Laure Van den Broeck won a ‘Boekenwelp’ (the runner-up of the ‘Boekenleeuw’, the award for Best Children’s Book in Flanders) for her first YA-novel, The Seventeenth Summer of Maurice Hamster. She lives in Southampton, UK, where she works part-time at October Books, an independent co-operative bookshop.

Silk Kathleen Vereecken • Another historical novel by the award-winning author Kathleen Vereecken • A compelling story filled with unexpected plot twists • Written from two different point-of-views – that of the introverted, self-effacing Louis, and the extroverted Camille German, French and Italian rights sold

Paris, 18th century. A turbulent era. Louis and Camille’s father is a silk merchant who departed for China some time before, but has never returned.

Will Louis be released? And will the silkworms survive so that Louis and Camille can make the silk that will honour their father’s memory?

The children cope with the absence of their father in entirely different ways. Camille seeks solace in her mother’s shop and throws herself into her work while Louis endeavours to get closer to his father by following in his footsteps. He makes silk. He devotes all his time to cultivating silkworms, an undertaking that preoccupies him night and day.

We award a historical youth novel which uncovers the secrets of history and uses them to create an original and emotional story. We also applaud the novel’s psychological strength and its philosophical and literary layers, which never endanger the plot. – Jury report ‘Boekenleeuw’ on I think it was love

But at that same time terrible things are happening in Paris: children are being kidnapped, only to be subsequently ransomed back to their parents for large sums of money. Then Louis also suddenly vanishes. Camille and her family do everything in their power to get him back. Although while he is missing she continues his project of cultivating the silkworms.

Kathleen Vereecken has written several young adult novels and is known for her beautiful, illustrative language. She was nominated for the ‘Gouden Uil’ for her novel All colours grey. She has also written Goose bumps on your skin and butterflies in your belly and The greenhouse effect or why does our earth warm up? For I think it was love, she received the ‘Boekenleeuw’, the most important prize for children’s and young adult’s books in Flanders.
