Apple Announces New iPhones: The Xs, Xs Max, And Xr Pranav Dixit BuzzFeed News Reporter
Apple just announced three big, brand new iPhones at an event held Wednesday at the Steve Jobs Theater on its Cupertino campus, and none of them are made for people with small hands. Apple’s flagship phones this year are the 5.8-inch iPhone Xs, an upgrade to last year’s $1,000 iPhone X, and the iPhone Xs Max (seriously), a larger version of the iPhone Xs with a 6.5-inch display. Both phones come with FaceID and a big, bright, edge-to-edge display with no home button. They have OLED screens that are brighter and higher quality than LCD displays (like the one on the iPhone 8/8 Plus), a significantly faster and more efficient processor (the A12 Bionic chip), a better camera with a more powerful sensor and better HDR, and a longer-lasting battery. It’s also water resistant and supports wireless charging. Besides the size, they don’t look any different from last year’s iPhone X — but you can now get them in a sleek new gold finish, in addition to silver and Space Gray. The iPhone Xr Apple’s third new iPhone, the iPhone Xr, is a lower-cost version of the iPhone Xs (it’s $250 less). At 6.1 inches, it’s bigger than the Xs, but it comes with an LCD display — the same screen Apple has used on the iPhone 8 and every iPhone before it — instead of the higher quality OLED displays on the iPhone X. It also has aluminum edges instead of the stainless steel ones that the other iPhone X models have. The iPhone XR has a big battery, too. Apple claims it lasts “up to 1.5 hours longer than iPhone 8 Plus” and lists internet use at 15 hours and video playback at 16 hours. Unlike the iPhone Xs and Xr Max, the Xr comes in a bunch of funky colors — so if you want a coral or a yellow iPhone, you already know which one to get. It also shares the same, beefy new processor, water resistance, facial recognition technology, wireless charging capability, and new image processor with its pricier siblings. More significantly: the iPhone Xr has Portrait Mode, even though the phone has only one camera. On previous iPhone models (7 Plus, 8 Plus, and X), Portrait Mode, which adds a soft-focus background to images, required two cameras, but the iPhone Xr is able to detect an image’s depth and add bokeh to a scene digitally. All new iPhone models also have two new camera features: Smart HDR and adjustable depth of focus. Smart HDR takes advantage of the new processor by taking four photos at once, and using the data to help with noise reduction, overexposure, and capturing motion. Depth Control is a new feature that allows users to adjust the blurriness of Portrait mode images. The iPhone Xs and Xs Max start at $999 and $1099, respectively, will be available to preorder this Friday, and they’ll ship Sept. 21. The iPhone Xr will cost you $749 and will be available for preordering Oct. 19.

Bear Witness and Deliver Aid to Children Detained by Immigration – San Antonio to McAllen Caravan 1) Panel Discussion on Friday September 28, 7 pm University of the Incarnate Word Student Engagement Center Ballroom 2) Caravan departs Saturday September 29, 8 am from UIW athletic fields parking lots (returns same day), 4301 Broadway St., San Antonio, TX 78209 Project Lifeline’s Caravan to “Ursula” Detention Center in McAllen, Texas to BEAR WITNESS Details and register here https://projectlifeline.us/ UIW is hosting Project Lifeline’s panel of doctors, faith leaders, and lawyers who will be participating in Project Lifeline’s caravan to “Ursula” Detention Center in McAllen, TX, and UIW is also providing the launchpad for the Project Lifeline caravan itself.
Each year 90,000 children are systematically deprived of food and water, basic medical care, and exposed to extreme cold and unsanitary conditions in immigration detention facilities. The Children Tell Us the Truth The children say, “It was painful how hungry we were.” “I begged for water for my daughter but the officials wouldn’t give her any.” “The temperature was extremely cold. Children were crying all the time. Human heat was not enough to warm the babies.” It’s Time to Stand Up for What is Right People across all divides agree that children must be treated humanely. Show your commitment to all detained children – the 90,000 who were incarcerated last year and the 90,000 children who will be detained next year – by joining Project Lifeline. Join the Caravan to Bear Witness
The purpose of the trip is to “bear witness,” i.e., to continue bringing attention to the questions and concerns about the U.S. federal detention of immigrant and refugee children, especially without their parents. The caravan will bring donations, especially blankets, and the offering of medical and legal services to the center (refused donations will be distributed among community partners in McAllen). In McAllen, Project Lifeline will host a 2-hour program featuring speakers, and students reading quotes from detainee “declarations” (testimonies collected through interviews conducted with immigrants and refugees during Flores delegation visits to monitor detention center conditions). The trip is about 8 hours round-trip, and the caravan will return the same day. Right now, we need college student, health professionals, faith leaders, and concerned citizens to register for the trip (at https://projectlifeline.us/); we need donated vans, gas, and drivers; and we need Project Lifeline’s caravan information to be posted widely across social media sites. Caravan participants, please wear your white coats, scrubs, and white collars (or other indicators of clergy status). “While a few immigrants said that conditions were adequate, most described cold temperatures, too little food, difficult separations from their children and crowded cells without enough sleeping mats. They said latrines were dirty and lacked privacy and that lights stayed on day and night.” https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/migrant-kids-choose-between-possible-death-and-never-seeing-parents-again_us_5b6ed7bee4b0bdd062099716

“Immigration lawyer Hope Frye said she recently met a six-year-old girl from Honduras whose wrists were burned by members of a gang her uncle refused to join. An immigrant family in the U.S. told her about a 5-year-old Honduran girl who was shot by gangs in their neighborhood in front of her 3-year-old sister.”
