# Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.

Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

SanAntonio Museum ofArt - FREEAdmission for UIWStudents & Employees

# Exciting news, there are new extended hours at SAMA! The Museum will stay open until 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. # All the galleries and grounds will be open, the Café des Artistes will stay open late with dinner and beverage service, and there will be live music on some evenings as well. The late hours are a great opportunity for students and employees to enjoy the museum as a study break or as a night out on the town!

The exhibit Animal Instinct: The Photographs of Daniel Lee, presented as part of San Antonio’s Fotoseptiembre celebration, is now open. # Special exhibition 5,000 Years of Chinese Jade Featuring Selections "om the National Museum of History, Taiwan and the Arthur M. Sackler Ga#ery, Smithsonian Institution will open on October 1, 2011, and run through February 19, 2012.
