Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities

Be sure to check out the Teen Community Service Project on page 24. Be A Reader The Be A Reader (BEAR) program is a literacy and mentoring project that has been helping elementary school children in the Tidewater Area learn to read for 14 years. Currently, the BEAR program is serving eight schools with over 70 program participants at various schools in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Portsmouth. BEAR volunteers go to an area school for an hour each week and spend quality one–on–one time with a child who has been identified by their teacher as a candidate for literacy mentoring. Time spent with the child helps him or her learn to read; however, it gives the child so much more. BEAR offers children five books to keep and a mentor to help them progress in their development of academic and social skills. Please contact Michelle Grimsley, BEAR Coordinator, at 321–2303 or mgrimsley@simonfamilyj.org to mentor a child or make a donation. Be A Reader is made possible through the generous support of First Book and many local individuals like you. American Red Cross Blood Drive Save a life. Give blood.
