The UK is home to some of the most creatively brilliant and technologically innovative games companies in the world, creating some of the biggest globally recognised content. As the trade body for UK games, we are delighted to be hosting a record 80 UK companies on our stand this year. Here are the top three reasons why the UK is the best place in the world to make and sell games: 1. Talent, innovation and creativity The UK has a proven history of making some of the biggest and best globallyrecognised games titles, and is the European leader in developing mobile apps. Our home-grown titles include console giants Grand Theft Auto and the Batman: Arkham series, mobile phenomenon Monument Valley, and Indie successes such as Virginia and Overcooked. We now have over 2,160 games companies in the UK, from the smallest start-ups to large multinational brands working across console, mobile apps, online, PC, esports, VR and AR.
2. A world leading business environment The UK is a home to a business, regulatory and tax environment that supports games companies. We have a diverse talent pool of games-makers, fantastic links to international trade partners, world-class educational courses, and generous tax breaks. Our Video Games Tax Relief has been in place since 2014, and offers 20% money back on development costs, across all platforms and business models. Since the introduction of the relief in April 2014, £119m has been paid out in response to 420 claims. The UK invests in the next generation of games talent, with over 100 UK-wide universities providing over 300 specialist games making courses. Computing has also replaced the outdated ICT curriculum, meaning we are preparing the learners of today for the jobs of tomorrow right from primary education. You can read more about Ukie’s Digital Schoolhouse creative computing initiative, which is powered by PlayStation, and supports teachers and learners with play-based computing education, on page 10.
3. One of the world’s biggest digital marketplaces Games were the biggest grossing entertainment sector of 2016, outselling the total revenues of music and video combined. According to the Entertainment Retailers Association, UK games sales figures for 2016 were £2.96bn. UK consumer spend on games products and events in 2016 was £4.33bn. This was propelled by huge growth in mobile games as the UK mobile games market alone is worth nearly £1bn. We also saw a record breaking year across digital and online, PC game hardware, games events and venues, showing that the market shows no signs of slowing down. As the trade body for games, Ukie is committed to ensuring that the UK remains the best place to make and sell games. How we do that is laid out in our manifesto online focusing on key areas including funding, cluster growth, a stable regulatory environment, support for cultural production, access to markets, talent, and investor confidence.

first time this year, where the inaugural GDC edition was won by Spilt Milk’s Lazarus.
The prestigious trophy will be awarded to the best UK developed but as yet unreleased game being shown at the expo. This will be the fifth year of the award at gamescom, where its aim is to shine a spotlight on the best of the UK’s development talent in front of a global audience.
No application is necessary for companies to be up for the award. Anonymous judges will be making their way around the halls throughout the first two days of the expo to assess the top British dev talent on display, before the winner is announced at the Ukie stand during the Wednesday evening’s networking drinks reception. All exhibitors on the Ukie stand and their guests are invited to attend this event, which is run in partnership with Runescape developer Jagex, and another networking drinks reception on Tuesday, in partnership with games recruitment firm OPM Response.

The UK Games Map
It’s been nearly a year since Ukie launched the UK Games Map – an open, shared and free to use online map of the UK games industry – and it continues to surprise us all with the information it reveals. At the time of writing, the map lists a mighty 2,160 games companies currently operating in the UK - an increase of over 200 companies listed since we launched back in September 2016! To put that in some context, according to the latest stats form other countries, that’s quite a bit ahead of Germany (450 companies) and Canada (472) and we’re well on the way to catching the USA (3,090) with new companies being added to the UK Games Map almost daily. In the last year the map itself has also had some major upgrades, with improvements to the layout, navigation,

Become a Video Game Ambassador
By Liz Mercuri, Unity
Becoming a Video Game Ambassador (VGA) was a very easy choice for me to make. When I was growing up and choosing my subjects at school and what career I was going to embark on, computer games weren’t seen as a viable career option. This made my dreams of working in the games industry, just that, unobtainable dreams. I didn’t know what skills I needed, what roles were available in games development, I didn’t know how games were made, or even where! It was very difficult to find answers to all these questions. Luckily for the next generation of game development talent, this is changing for the better. Part of this change includes role models and VGAs who endeavour to answer all these questions, empowering the future of games development talent. VGAs engage with hobbyists, educators,
students, parents and professionals to promote a positive perception and increase awareness of the games industry. We demonstrate that the diverse skill sets found in the industry are transferable and useful and that anyone regardless of background or gender, age or ethnicity for example, has the potential to create computer games.
Being a VGA is an incredibly rewarding experience. Equipping talent with the knowledge and tools that they need to succeed in the games industry or create games themselves, opens up a world of potential for innovation and creativity, not only for the individual but for the industry as a whole. By attending student game jams, initiatives such as BAFTA YGD or career fairs such as which Ukie hold at EGX, it is clear that the future of game development is bright and with VGAs giving just a little of their time, knowledge and positivity, you may

encourage someone who just makes it a little brighter. search and reporting, hopefully providing a more intuitive and more insightful experience to the more than 110,000 visitors we’ve had to date. While London remains the main hub for games companies (585) and Manchester is a clear second (92), the third and fourth slots have just one company in it between Brighton (68) and Guildford (67) – so it’s all to play for between Guildford’s gameshubs and Brighton’s piers, pints and pop-ups. As well as providing cool stats for this newspaper, the UK Games Map is also an invaluable tool for games businesses – helping build local business connections and networks, making companies visible to local talent, influencing relocation decisions and highlights companies and regional hubs to international investors. At Ukie, we use the map data in much of the work we do, from providing an intro to MPs about the games companies in their constituencies to forming the basis of our economic valuations of the industry, used to influence Government policy. Really though, the UK Games Map is a resource for the industry, by the industry: as well as it being completely free to use, our crowdsourced approach means that you can submit updates to your company profile, or create a new one if you’re a new business. You’re the experts and we couldn’t do it without your help: • 2,160 active games companies in the UK • 146 companies supplying services to the games industry • 229 games courses across 91 academic institutions • 69% of all companies listed have developed for mobile

Digital Schoolhouse, powered by PlayStation®, is inspiring the next generation with creative computing. Sponsor Digital Schoolhouse and join other games businesses in developing a diverse talent pipeline for the creative industries, and make a lasting impact on education in the UK.
Inspire the next generation of game developers and help drive diversity and innovation in the industry Good things happen when we put our heads together. That’s how the Digital Schoolhouse programme came to be; it was born out of the need for a new generation of digital talent, and the recognition that teachers and industry could help each other support that generation. Delivered by Ukie, the trade body supporting the UK’s games industry, the project has excited and upskilled over 1,800 teachers and 16,500 pupils, as well as equipping a new generation of teachers with skills, since its inception in 2015.
Why? “We have a shortage of highly skilled, digital talent in the UK, and making sure we’re ready for an unpredictable future is a priority,” says Shahneila Saeed, a former teacher and now Head of Education at Ukie and director of the Digital Schoolhouse programme. “Digital Schoolhouse exists because people are a country’s greatest resource, and because working together to inspire teachers and
children is not just necessary but incredibly rewarding. The enthusiasm we’ve had for the programme, particularly from PlayStation and the wider games industry, makes it clear to us that they see getting involved as a great opportunity.” Teachers were unprepared for the change in curriculum, and this, coupled with limited resources, left some lacking the skills and knowledge to teach coding and computing, making it even more of a challenge to inspire their pupils. This Alpha generation is primed to be inspired though. Children gravitate towards technology, and it pervades their lives in a way other generations didn’t experience. Capitalising on that is more exciting than we realised.
So what does it do? Digital Schoolhouse, powered by PlayStation® and delivered by Ukie, is a not-for-profit programme, which uses play-based learning to engage the next generation of
diverse pupils and teachers with the computing curriculum.
Each Digital Schoolhouse is based in a school, college or university environment, and aims to work with a growing network of local primary and secondary teachers to deliver creative and cross-curricular computing lessons; pupils leave feeling inspired about, and engaged with, computing and the wider creative digital industries. The programme has been accurately described as a ‘bridge between education and industry’ – and a good one at that.
and inspire. We don’t believe in waiting around for others to come up with a solution, we’d rather be part of that process and help drive change and innovation.” If you’re interested in inspiring the next generation and joining this exciting collaboration between grassroots education activists and the games industry, please contact us: Find out more at: digitalschoolhouse.org.uk contact@digitalschoolhouse.org.uk
Getting involved “A great teacher can have a lasting impact on a student. Digital Schoolhouse provides teachers with practical guidance and creative resources, but, crucially, it inspires them, and their pupils in turn,” says Warwick Light, UK Managing Director and Vice President of Sony Interactive Entertainment UK, “PlayStation got involved for precisely those reasons, to upskill
