The UK is open for business 2. A world leading business environment
The UK is a home to a business, regulatory and tax environment that supports games companies. We have a diverse talent pool of creative businesses and tech giants, fantastic links to international trade partners, world-class educational courses, and generous tax breaks. Our Video Games Tax Relief has been in place since 2014, and offers 20% credit back on development costs, across all platforms and business models. The relief has been allocated to nearly 300 completed projects since 2014, paying out over £45.9m to UK development teams.
Ukie CEO, Dr Jo Twist OBE, CEO of Ukie, speaking at the Ukie Westminster Games industry VIP reception
The UK’s decision to vote to leave the EU in last year’s Referendum has posed lots of questions for businesses across the world, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that the UK games industry remains very much open for business.
Our home-grown titles include console giants Grand Theft Auto and the Batman: Arkham series, mobile phenomenon Her Story, and Indie successes such as Elite: Dangerous and No Man’s Sky.
The UK is the home to some of the most creatively brilliant and technologically innovative games businesses in the world.
We now have over 2,000 games companies in the UK, from the smallest start-ups to large multinational brands working across console, mobile, online, PC, esports, VR and AR.
Here are the top three reasons why the UK is still the best place in the world to make and sell games: 1. Talent, innovation, culture and creativity The UK has a proven history of making some of the biggest and best globallyrecognised games titles and is the European leader in developing mobile apps.
We host London Games Festival, a 10 day cultural celebration of games and interactive entertainment, which this year will see over 55,000 people attend events in venues across our vibrant capital. See page 4 to find out more.
The UK invests in the next generation of games talent, with over 100 UK-wide universities providing over 300 specialist games courses. Computing has also replaced the outdated ICT curriculum, meaning we are preparing the learners of today for the jobs of tomorrow right from the start of primary education. 3. One of the world’s biggest digital marketplaces We’re leading the way in the digital market in the creative screen sectors, with digital sales of games in 2016 at £2.2bn – larger than the combined digital sales of video and music (£1.9bn). Ukie is committed to ensuring that the UK remains the best place to make and sell games in a postBrexit world. How we do that is laid out in our Blueprint for Growth report around 5 key areas including funding, cluster growth, a stable regulatory environment, support for cultural production, access to markets, talent, and investor confidence.

tool and data source, promoting local networking, encouraging skills sharing, connecting businesses and talent. It highlights clusters, trends and patterns of growth to investors, as well as providing academics, journalists and politicians a trusted, up to date snapshot of the industry.
London Games Festival is part of the Games London programme jointly delivered by Ukie and Film London. Backed with £1.2m funding from the Mayor of London’s Local Enterprise Partnership for London (LEAP), Games London’s three-year aim is to generate £35m of inward investment in turn creating almost 300 jobs.
The map gives us incredible insight into the size, scale and geography of the UK games sector. Some top #MapFacts are: • There are currently 2,088 active games companies in the UK • The map also lists 126 games industry service companies and 261 games-related academic courses In September 2016, Ukie launched the UK Games Map, the first interactive, dynamic, real-time database of the UK games industry. Built in partnership with Nesta, the UK’s innovation foundation, the UK Games Map is an invaluable
• 68% of the companies were founded since the beginning of 2010 • 72% of games businesses in the UK are based outside of London • 69% of companies are working on mobile content Check out gamesmap.uk
UK game of the show 2017 For the first time, the prestigious UK Game of the Show Award that Ukie organises every year at gamescom will now be taking place at GDC. The accolade is awarded to the best unreleased UK developed game on show at the expo. By focusing on unreleased titles the award shines a spotlight on the games that will be making the news in the future whilst also showcasing the outstanding development talent that exists in the UK. Previous winners at gamescom have included PaperSeven’s Blackwood Crossing and RoboPixelGames’ Gunnihilation. Ukie is delighted to have Reality Games as sponsors for the first award this year at GDC.
Zbigniew John Woznowski, CEO & Co-founder of Reality Games, said, ‘We understand very well how hard it is to be noticed in the gaming world, because just 2 years ago we were an Indie developer who was trying to get our foot in the door. We want to support UK talent and we know that if you get your first award, you will be motivated to work harder to develop great gaming experiences.’ The anonymous industry judges are leading figures and they will be combing the halls of GDC to identify potential winners, who will be announced at Ukie’s UK Industry Drinks Reception on Wednesday evening at B Restaurant & Bar.
Monopoly in Trafalfar Square, LGF 2016
The Games London partnership between Ukie and screen agency Film London is now in its second year and is delivering on its promise to make London the games capital of the world. And when you find out what’s in store for 2017’s event you won’t want to miss it. LGF 2017 runs from 30 March to 9 April and is expected to reach 50,000 attendees. This year, we have an expanded range of cultural events, with a live music concert in the works alongside a closing weekend parade. That’s on top of all the B2B activity, other tent poles like Now Play This, or the vast and vibrant Festival Fringe. Not to mention the return of EGX Rezzed and the BAFTA Games Awards. In between all of those significant events we have a range of cultural and thought provoking summits covering Mixed Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Games Culture, plus the return of our unique ‘women in’ W.IN networking event. Last but not least is the Games Finance Market, which connects interactive entertainment content creators of any type with a broad mix of investor and business partners. We are doubling the size of the Market this year to welcome 60 games companies meeting 60 games investors from around the world. The Games Finance Market is now the only event of this type in the UK – we’ve put a lot of effort into shaping this event so that it perfectly matches what games companies and investors need, with a two-day event in a private London hotel that offers the right meetings to each delegate. We’re very exciting about what’s in store from the end of March onwards, and buoyed by the hugely welcome reception the first London Games Festival had last
Games London is already delivering on that wider target to promote the wider UK games industry and London as a global hub for interactive entertainment that can attract investors. Our work doesn’t just cover the Festival and the Games Finance Market – we also work on inbound missions, such as a fam trip for VCs in July, and outbound trade missions, such as a nine-company delegation we took to Slush in Helsinki, Finland. Across all of this we’re already close to having created £10m potential business. We’re attending GDC this month to both promote the festival and engage more investors who don’t know about the opportunity in London. With 500 games companies in a city that’s filled with so much more potential, we hope you agree that it won’t be long until we can say that London is the games capital of the world.
