2013 McConnell Presenters

 

The 45th McConnell Conference will be held on March 1–2, 2013 at Embassy Suites. Our presenters for the 2013 McConnell Conference will be Jack Gantos and Dan Yaccarino. More information is forth coming but you can visit our event on Facebook, http://on.fb.me/McConnell2013. We have also be holding the Connecting with Characters contest for next year’s McConnell. The prizes will be signed books by Jack Gantos or Dan Yaccarino. More information on the contest is forthcoming.

Jack Gantos will be our Joy Trehune speaker for the 2013 McConnell Conference. We are very excited to have the winner of the 2012 Newbery Medal join us next year. Jack Gantos has written for every age level. His memoir Hole in My Life won the Michael L. Printz and Robert F. Sibert honors. His novel Dead End in Norvelt won the 2012 John Newbery Medal and Scott O’Dell award. He is also the writer of the Joey Pigza series, the Rotten Ralph readers, and Jack Henry Adventure.

Dan Yaccarino will be our illustrator for next year. Yaccarino is a talented children’s illustrator who is known for his books and television shows. He is known for his children’s books Every Friday, Cooking with Henry and Elliebelly, and Boy + Bot. Yaccarino’s television credits include Willa’s Wild Life, Oswald, and The Backyardiagans. His television show Oswald won the Parent’s Choice Award for animated TV series. We are very excited to announce Dan Yaccarino for the McConnell conference March 1, 2013.

Summer Reads—Join Us at the McConnell Center! 2012 Summer Reading Discussion Group will start May 19 with Kindred Souls. Come join us in the McConnell Center for lively discussion. Bring your dinner and a covered beverage to enjoy while we discuss these great reads. These are the novels we have chosen so far for our summer reading discussion group. Come up with a logo that represents Directions both the Conference and the Center, and in particular, the dedication of  All entries must be in jpeg both to youth literature. format Then, email your logo as a jpeg attachment to us by July 1, 2012.

Choose Privacy Week May 1-7, 2012 Privacy Week begins on May 1, 2012. Privacy week is meant to spark national conversation about privacy rights in the digital age. Starting on Monday, April 30th privacyrevolution.org will feature guest bloggers discussing the importance of defending privacy and assuring freedom from surveillance. Besides the guest bloggers, there will also be a premiere of a new documentary on privacy at privacyrevolution.org on May 3rd. This documentary is meant to be shared with the community and it is about surveillance techniques used by federal and local law enforcement. Privacy week is a great opportunity to discuss civil liberties and privacy rights.

 

About the Center A vital gathering place for books and ideas, the McConnell Center is committed to identifying excellent literature for children and adolescents and to bringing this literature to the attention of those adults who have an academic, professional, career, or personal interest in connecting young readers with books. We maintain two main, noncirculating collections: Our Current Collection includes all books sent to us for review by publishers during the current year. The Permanent Collection is several collections of books

It includes the Basic Collection, the Awardwinning Collection (Caldecott, Newbery, Printz, Morris, Pura Belpré, Sibert, and Orbis Pictus Awards), the Kentucky Collection (notable Kentucky authors and books about Kentucky), the Reference Collection, and the Periodical Collection.
