WELCOME
The simple pleasure of holding this program is particularly poignant. It speaks of both our quiet confidence for the year ahead and of our gratitude for your continued support: it is our first printed brochure since 2020. This early release is just a small selection to give you a sneak peek of the year ahead. The full program will be released in two parts – February and late June, 2023.
In December we will receive a beautiful new Steinway Model D grand piano made possible through the generous bequest of the late John Lane Koch. It will be selected in Hamburg by the great British pianist Paul Lewis. In February he will inaugurate the piano with parts one and two of the complete Schubert sonatas.
It is with excitement and joy that we welcome the legendary Jordi Savall with Hespèrion XXI. He’s performed thousands of concerts leaving a trail of memories, inspiration, students, fans, awards, and accolades in his wake, but this will be your only opportunity to hear him in the intimacy of UKARIA.
Our passion and commitment to the string quartet continues with performances by Quatuor Van Kuijk, the Schumann Quartett, and the Vision String Quartet. They each inhabit completely different sound worlds. Steeped in tradition but searching for new paths, they push boundaries and show us what it takes to play as one.
In June, the Australian Chamber Orchestra returns for a weekend of their distinctive musical alchemy, and in late July, eight musicians from the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and fifteen musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music join forces for a weekend which explores the relevance of cultural tradition in the 21st century.
It is for you that these artists travel, for the warm spirit with which you welcome them and their music. We look forward to sharing these performances with you.

SCHUBERT: THE COMPLETE SONATAS
SATURDAY 4–SUNDAY 5 FEBRUARY
‘Arguably the finest Schubert interpreter of his generation’
– Gramophone
‘Schubert’s completed piano sonatas take us on a unique and heart-wrenching journey through the last 12 years of his life. From the charming lyricism of the early sonatas to the transcendent creativity of the late masterpieces, via harrowing moments of despair as his health started to decline.
The sonatas express with directness and sincerity some of the most fundamental elements of human experience – longing, consolation, despair, joy, loss, nostalgia, and hope. In our time, his music is as essential and poignant as ever.’
– Paul Lewis
We are honoured to be part of this monumental project, in which Paul performs all of Schubert’s completed sonatas in four concerts across two years in revered venues from Wigmore Hall to the Gilmore Piano Festival, and from the Oslo Opera House to the Sala São Paulo in Brazil. This weekend event not only launches our 2023 concert series, but also our new Steinway Model D piano. In February 2024 Paul will return to complete the cycle with parts three and four of his landmark series.
PART ONE SATURDAY 4 FEBRUARY 2.30PM
‘No one feels another’s grief, no one understands another’s joy. People imagine that they can reach one another. In reality they only pass each other by.’
– Franz Schubert (1797–1828)
Sonata for Piano No. 7 in E flat, D. 568 Sonata for Piano No. 14 in A minor, D. 784 Sonata for Piano No. 17 in D, D. 850
PART TWO SUNDAY 5 FEBRUARY 2.30PM
‘In his longer forms, Schubert is a wanderer. He likes to move at the edge of the precipice, and does so with the assurance of a sleepwalker. To wander is the Romantic condition; one yields to it enraptured, or is driven and plagued by terror of finding no escape. More often than not, happiness is but the surface of despair.’
– Alfred Brendel (b. 1931)
Sonata for Piano No. 15 in C, D. 840 Sonata for Piano No. 13 in A, D. 664 Sonata for Piano No. 16 in A minor, D. 845

JORDI SAVALL WITH HESPÈRION XXI
FANTASIES, BATTLES AND DANCES
SUNDAY 26 FEBRUARY 2.30PM and repeated at 6.00PM
‘All the mornings of the world may fade away, but Jordi Savall endures.’
– Boston Globe
‘In the pantheon of musicians, Jordi Savall looms large. Along with a handful of visionaries from the first wave of the Early Music movement, he brought an instrument back to life after a period of slumber that had lasted a couple of centuries. His musical and personal charisma reintroduced listeners to the eloquence, virtuosity, and poetry of the viola da gamba, and together with his late wife, Montserrat Figueras, and a band of faithful collaborators, he’s played thousands of concerts across the world, made hundreds of recordings, and left a trail of memories, inspiration, students, fans, and accolades in his wake. Through his life in music, he’s contributed more than five decades of glorious international music making, first revitalising the historical classics of his instrument, and gradually casting the net wider and wider, as his creativity and drive took him out into realms none of us had imagined.
In 2023, we celebrate Ulrike Klein AO, another visionary and free spirit who has created possibilities for many. It seems fitting that Jordi Savall joins the celebrations with a concert at UKARIA – two great dreamers and doers, united in their love for music, and their generosity in sharing it with others.’

THE GESUALDO SIX FADING
‘Their sound seemed to float in mid-air before reaching the ears of the rapt audience… every line, every gorgeous texture was radiantly clear.’
– The Times
After forming for a single performance of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories in 2014, The Gesualdo Six has gone on to become one of the world’s great vocal ensembles. Their debut at Wigmore Hall in 2021, and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, London Mozart Players, Luxmuralis, and William Barton testify to their meteoric rise and artistic maturity.
They return to UKARIA with a program inspired by the night prayer service of Compline, which since the fourth century has ushered in the darkness of night. Renaissance polyphony by Byrd, Gesualdo and Tallis – containing startling harmonic shifts and expressive word painting – is juxtaposed with contemporary reflections by Veljo Tormis, Alison Willis and Richard Rodney Bennett.
Evoking the contemplative atmosphere of Compline while the sun sets on the Mount Barker Summit, this concert returns us to the infinite and ancient shades of night’s approach.

FINALE
– InReview
Timothy Wayne-Wright created The A Cappella Academy, which launched globally at UKARIA in April 2022. After the success of this inspiring event, it returns with The Gesualdo Six as Artists-inResidence and will once again be directed by Tim.
Over an intensive five days of teaching, the Adelaide Chamber Singers and Aurora Vocal Ensemble, directed by Christie Anderson, and the Festival Statesmen Chorus, directed by Jonathan Bligh, will perform alongside The Gesualdo Six in this Finale performance. In the pure acoustic of UKARIA, vocal works reflecting both rebirth and revival will be showcased, from core Renaissance repertoire to contemporary commissions.
In the week prior to Finale, there will be professional development opportunities for local singers, conductors, teachers, and choral enthusiasts through participation in public workshops. Visit the UKARIA website for more information.

NICOLAS ALTSTAEDT
SUNDAY 16 APRIL 2.30PM
When Nicolas Altstaedt curated UKARIA 24 in 2018, the hall hummed with an intense energy. His musical flexibility and charisma was palpable, ‘making a complex and intelligent program not just satisfying, but utterly compelling’ (Limelight).
In 2012, Nicolas was chosen by Gidon Kremer to become his successor as Artistic Director of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival. Founded by Kremer in 1981, Lockenhaus gives creative freedom to world-class artists, and has been the source of much inspiration to UKARIA. We are thrilled to have Nicolas back again for his only solo recital on this Australian tour.
‘As one would expect of an international soloist of his stature, Altstaedt has technique to burn, near perfect intonation, superb control of extreme registers and harmonics, and is physically at ease with his instrument… Such was the purity and warmth of his tone, and so impeccable his rhythmic nuance, that one hung on every note as if they were the words of a master storyteller.’

KONSTANTIN SHAMRAY
2.30PM
‘… a thrilling and profound experience of programming and performance. With a sensitivity of interpretation and awesome technique, he gives meaning to what could otherwise be a tumble of notes and rhythms.’
– Limelight
This special event marks Konstantin’s first solo recital on our new Steinway Model D piano. Winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition and the Klavier Olympiade in Bad Kissingen, Konstantin has since performed with major orchestras in Europe, North America, and Australia, while maintaining a dizzying calendar of chamber and solo appearances.
The first half of this program reveals different instrumental inflections: the Rameau is attributed to the harpsichord; the Franck is mediated by his mastery of the organ; and Ravel’s La Valse was originally written for orchestra but arranged for piano by the composer. The program culminates with Prokofiev’s eighth piano sonata, composed during the Second World War. Revered as one of the greatest Russian composers of the 20th century, we commemorate seventy years since his death, and celebrate his magnificent oeuvre.

QUATUOR VAN KUIJK
SUNDAY 30 APRIL 2.30PM
‘It all sounds so fresh, so warm, so unanimous – in short, so right.’
– Gramophone
Quatuor Van Kuijk’s career erupted in 2015 with prize-winning performances at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, and the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition. Their rise continues with appearances at European festivals including Lockenhaus, Verbier and Edinburgh, and with five critically acclaimed albums on the Alpha Classics label.
On their second Australian tour for a residency at the Canberra International Music Festival, they perform at UKARIA, the Melbourne Recital Centre, and the Utzon Room at the Sydney Opera House.

SCHUMANN QUARTETT
Brothers Erik, Ken, and Mark Schumann, with Veit Hertenstein, are the Schumann Quartett. Their exhilarating performances have won international acclaim and their six albums have accrued awards from BBC Music Magazine, an Opus Klassik, and a Jahrespreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. This band of brothers have been the Quartetin-Residence at Wigmore Hall, made guest appearances at festivals and concert series across Europe, and continue to tour extensively in the USA. As critics predicted, ‘the future belongs to them.’
They are in our region for performances in Singapore, and as this will be the only opportunity to hear the quartet in Australia, we have dedicated a weekend to them. Experience masterpieces of the repertoire with one of the great quartets of the world.

FRIDAY 28–SUNDAY 30 JULY
Musicians from the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) come together for a weekend of concerts curated by violist and member of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Tahlia Petrosian. Performing repertoire that explores ‘The Relevance of Cultural Tradition in the 21st Century’, this aptly named festival brings musicians from the world’s oldest symphony orchestra together on stage with the next generation of Australian performers, and promises a weekend of exhilarating performances, exchanges and discussions.
The theme of this festival is particularly significant to our Founder, Ulrike Klein AO, who established UKARIA to inspire people through culture. In 2023 she celebrates 40 years in Australia and her 80th birthday in June. These concerts also serve to honour her magnificent contribution to music.

STEVEN OSBORNE PROMENADE
SUNDAY 27 AUGUST 2.30PM
– The Advertiser
The celebrated Scottish pianist returns to Australia for the first time since 2018. His ability to bring the micro and macro structures of music into focus lends his playing a fractal quality: no matter how closely you listen – or how zoomed out – the notes and works create enthralling patterns.
Famed for definitive performances of music from Debussy to Kapustin, Steven’s playing is kaleidoscopic in its range of colours and textures. For us he delivers a program of picturesque and episodic works from Schumann, Debussy, and Mussorgsky.

ILYA GRINGOLTS WITH AURA GO PHANTOM AND ESCAPADE
SUNDAY
‘One can hardly play the violin more expressively and uncompromisingly than Gringolts.’
– Süddeutsche Zeitung
Feted for his effortless renditions of the otherwise impossible – from Paganini and Locatelli to Brett Dean – Ilya’s performances and recordings have established him as one of the quintessential violin virtuosi of our time. He has performed as soloist with the world’s leading orchestras, including a recent collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Pianist Aura Go joins Ilya for the first time since collaborating at the 2016 Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland. Their shared passion for contemporary music unites them here in the Australian premiere of modern master Wolfgang Rihm’s Phantom und Eskapade, dedicated to Anne-Sophie Mutter. Rihm’s invocation of the fantastical alludes to the Schumann sonata and its preoccupations with imagination and myth. The Mozart sonata will unveil the crystalline sounds of Ilya’s Stradivarius violin.

VISION STRING QUARTET SPECTRUM
– Der Tagesspiegel
The Vision String Quartet has opened new vistas for the genre. Their ground-breaking performances of Schubert in complete darkness and Beethoven from memory announced a quartet of fierce rigour and – yes – vision. This anything but foursquare quartet has performed on the world’s most prestigious stages, including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Oji Hall in Tokyo, and the Philharmonie Luxembourg. Beyond the standard repertoire, they seek new possibilities.
On their album Spectrum the cello morphs into an electric bass, violas and violins sometimes become ukuleles and guitars, and together they summon an imaginary drum kit. These sonic transformations are infused with harmonies and rhythms from folk and pop. For us they perform their favourite pieces from Spectrum alongside new works, possibly composed en route to UKARIA. This is their final concert after a national tour for Musica Viva Australia and your only opportunity to hear them perform this program on this tour.
