UKARIA honours our First Nations by fostering a shared sense of respect for this land, and we acknowledge and pay our respects to the Peramangk, traditional custodians of the land on which the Cultural Centre stands.

WELCOME

We are delighted to share our final release for 2024 with nine new concerts.

At the heart of our program are the artists who inspire us. These discoveries happen in all sorts of places and are often outside of the major concert halls of Europe. In 2022, Alison heard Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii high up in the Swiss Alps, in a church at the Verbier Festival. His extraordinary ability to communicate was apparent from the moment he sat silently orientating himself at the keyboard. His performance was a profound listening experience, and it’s a long-held dream to share his unique musicianship with you. Trio Gaspard was another discovery who we heard for the first time in 2019 at Anthony Marwood’s festival in Peasmarsh, a village in the county of East Sussex in England.

Collaboration is also integral to our planning, as without presenting partners such as the Adelaide Guitar Festival, we wouldn’t be able to bring you Antoine Boyer and Yeore Kim, an extraordinary guitar-harmonica duo from Paris. Our long relationship with artists such as Umberto Clerici adds depth to the repertoire selection and this season he returns with four friends, all astonishing musicians, playing together as a quintet for the first time.

In November, we hope you will join us in honouring the Goldner String Quartet as we pay tribute to this iconic ensemble. Performing Schubert’s Death and the Maiden one last time, their farewell includes a special lunch to celebrate their magnificent achievements over thirty years.

As always, it’s a joy to share these concerts with you.

KRISTIN BERARDI QUARTET

CONCERT CANCELLED

Renowned jazz vocalist Kristin Berardi brings a quartet of friends to UKARIA for a celebration of musical collaboration. Originally from Brisbane and now based in Switzerland, Kristin welcomes her long-time duo partner Sam Anning to this performance, along with two other friends and colleagues: the celebrated jazz pianist and composer Andrea Keller and the award-winning Australian tenor saxophonist Julien Wilson. From the intimacy of her 2019 duo album with Sam Anning, to the expansive horizons of new work written specifically for this quartet, Kristin’s program explores the creative possibility and dynamism of cross-continental collaboration and musical friendships old and new. As Kristin herself explains: ‘This group of friends comes together to celebrate life’s highs and lows, expressing them all through sounds and silence.’

JAKUB JAKOWICZ, PAAVALI JUMPPANEN AND THE AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET

SUNDAY 11 AUGUST 2.30PM

In a welcome return to UKARIA, the Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen joins forces with his friend and collaborator, renowned Polish violinist Jakub Jakowicz (whom UKARIA audiences will recall from his performances at Chamber Landscapes, Adelaide Festival 2023). The program’s first half juxtaposes two very different investigations of the piano-violin duo: Schubert’s formidable Fantasy, premiered in the year of his death, and the Polish violinist and composer Grazyna Bacewicz’s starkly atmospheric Sonata No. 5, written more than one hundred years later. In the second half, the Australian String Quartet joins Paavali and Jakub for the afternoon’s pièce de résistance, Ernest Chausson’s Concert for Violin, Piano and String Quartet. A nineteenth-century take on the seventeenth-century concerto grosso, Chausson’s monumental work combines chamber music sensibilities with a doubleconcerto profile, intensifying the musical drama and bursting out of the salon atmosphere that Schubert and Bacewicz’s sonatas inhabit. Dedicated to the virtuoso Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe – a member of Chausson’s coterie in Paris – the Concert is an exercise in imaginative experimentation. The music demands agility, flexibility and humour from its performers, who are asked to shape-shift between roles and rise to its virtuosic heights.

TRIO GASPARD

SUNDAY 18 AUGUST 2.30PM

One of the most dynamic and visionary piano trios to emerge on the European scene in recent years, Trio Gaspard – currently Wigmore Hall’s Artist in Residence – makes its long-awaited Australian debut. Known for their riveting stage presence and compelling interpretations, the trio shares a program that showcases their virtuosic flair, as well as their commitment to furthering the trio genre. Here, Schumann’s sunny F major Trio is paired with music from 1963 by the Hungarian Sándor Veress; and a Haydn Trio converses with a work by the contemporary Swiss-Dutch composer Helena Winkelman, commissioned for Trio Gaspard’s ongoing Haydn Project. With its members hailing from Germany, Greece and the UK –each with busy careers as soloists and chamber musicians – Trio Gaspard speaks with a unique and modern voice: one that makes a convincing case for the piano trio as the most exciting and dynamic of chamber music genres.

UMBERTO CLERICI AND FRIENDS

SUNDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2.30PM

Italian conductor and cellist extraordinaire

Umberto Clerici – former Principal Cellist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and now Chief Conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra – is no stranger to UKARIA. In a celebration of musical friendship – with its special alchemy of trust and spontaneity –Umberto assembles a collection of friends who also happen to be some of Australia’s most celebrated music-makers. Hear their combined talents as they navigate a program of high drama. Rachmaninov’s tempestuous early Piano Trio, written in memory of his deceased mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, is juxtaposed with Shostakovich’s own youthful contribution to the piano trio repertoire – in tribute to a childhood sweetheart. These trios are countered with Schubert’s epic Trout Quintet – a perfect opportunity to experience five musicians at the height of their powers in full flight.

ANTOINE BOYER AND YEORE KIM

SUNDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2.30PM

At some point in our lives, many of us have picked up a harmonica or a guitar in a spirit of curiosity; far fewer of us have discovered the kaleidoscope of sonic colour that has become the signature of the guitar-harmonica duo Antoine Boyer and Yeore Kim. Antoine is a French gypsy-jazz guitarist sensation; Yeore is a Korean harmonica player extraordinaire. In a diverse program that blends music from the streets of 1930s Paris to Paul McCartney standards, as well as their own original compositions, Antoine and Yeore showcase the musical influences that have formed them and their instruments. Join us for a unique afternoon of unexpected discoveries and profound musicianship, perfectly suited to the intimacy of UKARIA.

KONSTANTIN SHAMRAY

SUNDAY 22 SEPTEMBER 2.30PM

Alexander Scriabin, the visionary Russian composer and pianist, heard sounds in colour. In the spirit of Scriabin then, this recital program paints in shades of blue: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ‘deep violet’ C sharp minor Sonata blurs into Scriabin’s more enigmatic ‘lilac’ Sonata in G sharp minor, before metamorphosing into Nikolai Medtner’s ‘sky blue’ Sonata in E minor. Beyond its colourings, the concert offers a unique exploration of a Russian pianistic tradition, via the distinctive contributions of three composers who were also pianists.

Performed chronologically, these three lesserknown sonatas offer rare and moving glimpses into the singular voices that Tchaikovsky, Scriabin and Medtner imagined for the piano – as well as the ways in which their works speak to and engage with one another. And who better to sift through these intricate shades of blue than the poetic, commanding Russian-Australian pianist Konstantin Shamray: formidable concerto soloist, renowned recitalist and chamber music partner, recent Adelaide resident and frequent, well-loved UKARIA artist.

LA PHILHARMONIC WIND QUINTET

SUNDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2.30PM

The wind quintet ensemble is a unique phenomenon: five instruments, vastly different in voice, range and dynamic profile, joining together in a feat of subtle balance and lightness of touch. In a welcome return to UKARIA, the renowned LA Philharmonic Wind Quintet –including Adelaide’s own Andrew Bain, Principal Horn of the LA Phil – presents an array of music for this distinctive musical grouping. Dancing their way through a wide-ranging program, the ensemble will showcase the imagination and creativity with which composers have historically responded to the challenge posed by the genre:

Carl Nielsen’s masterful 1921 Wind Quintet is set alongside 1940s Jean Françaix and 1950s Leonard Bernstein, as well as contemporary offerings from American composer Valerie Coleman and Australian composer Ross Edwards. It is an enticing musical menu, celebrating the nuanced colourings, distinctive voice and virtuosity that define the genre itself and the LA Philharmonic Wind Quintet.

NOBUYUKI TSUJII

SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2.30PM

Japanese pianist Noboyuki Tsujii, known as Nobu, is rapidly becoming one of the distinctive musical voices of our time. Nobu – who has been blind since birth – began his musical life on a toy piano, diligently mimicking his mother’s songs. His rise was vertiginous – debuting at twelve in Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, and going on to win the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition. As well as his electrifying stage presence – ‘the definition of virtuosity’ according to The Observer – Nobu is an artist of distinct sensitivity. He speaks often of the care with which he approaches each piece of music, and his sense of responsibility to draw the audience into his sound world. Having recently signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon, who will produce his debut DG record in 2025, Nobu joins Argerich and Pollini, his pianist heroes. This performance is a unique opportunity to experience an artist who will shortly become a household name.

GOLDNER STRING QUARTET FAREWELL

CELEBRATION

SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER 11.30AM

For thirty years, the Goldner String Quartet has been at the heart of Australian chamber music. From their fruitful relationships with key composers, to their mentoring of young quartets, to their international advocacy for the quality and imagination of Australian music-makers, the four members of the quartet have played a leading role in shaping Australia’s chamber music culture. The quartet’s thirtieth season is also its final season – truly an end to a musical era. Join the Goldner String Quartet one last time to pay tribute to one of Australia’s great ensembles. In this special event, they play music that has been dear to their collective life: work by their friend and collaborator Matthew Hindson; Beethoven’s hymn of thanks, the Heiliger Dankgesang; and Schubert’s powerful and poignant Death and the Maiden. The Goldners’ performance will be followed by a celebratory lunch with the artists.
