FEBRUARY-MARCH 2022

PRELUDE ‘Be like the flower, turn your faces to the sun.’ – Khalil Gibran

2022 is upon us and with a new year comes hope for new possibilities. We have all lived through challenging moments, and have adapted, learnt and created new ways of doing. This is ever true at UKARIA where our cultural program has continued to adapt and evolve. We are most grateful for your patience and support as we navigate the easing of border restrictions, the resumption of travel and the joyous return of artists.

While we are not yet in a position to release our entire 2022 season, we are delighted that we have several new offerings in February and March including Chamber Landscapes during the Adelaide Festival.

Ulrike Klein AO Founder

As always, we look forward to welcoming back all our friends, on and off stage, so that together we can be nourished by music in nature. Alison Beare CEO

AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET FRIDAY 4 FEBRUARY 11.00AM

‘Each note is a picture, a fragrance… There are notes that laugh and kiss and sigh and melt together. And notes that weep and rage and fly apart like shattered crystal.’ – Helen Keller When the second movement of Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No. 1 was performed for Helen Keller, she immediately sensed the musical vibrations and was moved to tears. Along with this famous Andante cantabile founded on a folk song Tchaikovsky first heard whistled by a house painter, the quartet features moments of exuberance and drama, finishing with a neoclassical homage to his musical idol, Mozart. Although the composer is best known for works involving large ensembles, this first quartet – his first published work of chamber music – has deservedly gained a reputation as one of the great string quartets of the nineteenth century.

Dale Barltrop | Violin Francesca Hiew | Violin Christopher Cartlidge | Viola Michael Dahlenburg | Cello Duration | Approximately one hour without interval. Note | Complimentary Devonshire tea will be served prior to the performance. Tickets Adult (A) $50 Concession (C) $45 Student (S) $25

In the Australian String Quartet’s first morning concert at UKARIA for 2022, the Tchaikovsky will be paired with a new work by Adelaidebased composer Jakub Jankowski, commissioned by the ASQ with generous support from Peter and Margaret Janssens in celebration of their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Jakub’s work has been featured in the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival (2018), the Musica Viva Festival (2017) and the London International Mime Festival (2016), and in 2019, Jakub was featured as composer in residence at the Tongyeong International Music Festival in South Korea.

ANDREA LAM WITH DALE BARLTROP AND MICHAEL DAHLENBURG SUNDAY 6 FEBRUARY 2.30PM [SOLD OUT]

This concert has been rescheduled from Sunday 19 September 2021. Award-winning pianist Andrea Lam is praised for her ‘melting lyricism, filigree touch and spirited eloquence’ (The Australian). Holding degrees from the Yale School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music, she has appeared as a soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia and Christchurch Symphony Orchestras, along with all major Australian symphony orchestras. Currently Co-Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and First Violinist of the Australian String Quartet, Dale Barltrop has also appeared as Concertmaster of the Australian World Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle. He has been engaged as a soloist with the MSO, and with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with whom he also served as Concertmaster from 2009–2016. Michael Dahlenburg was appointed Cellist of the Australian String Quartet in November 2020. Before joining the ASQ, he served as Principal Cello and regular guest conductor of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. A founding member of the Hamer Quartet, Michael has performed with ensembles including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Flinders Quartet, and Celia Craig’s ARCADIA ensemble. Piano trios by Mozart and Brahms bookend this program, which also includes the Australian premiere of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s Four Folk Songs for Piano Trio, originally commissioned in 2012 by Andrea’s New York-based ensemble, the Claremont Trio.

EMMA DONOVAN AND PAUL GRABOWSKY FRIDAY 11 FEBRUARY 7.30PM SATURDAY 12 FEBRUARY 7.30PM [SOLD OUT] The Saturday concert has been rescheduled from Saturday 21 August 2021. ‘That Emma Donovan is an extraordinary singer is no secret. During the recording of Archie Roach’s Tell Me Why, Emma joined us in the studio for a duet with the great man on ‘Just a Closer Walk With Thee’, a tribute to Mahalia Jackson. Her command of gospel music was immediately and excitingly evident. Emma’s voice is rich, powerful and glowing, and I can’t wait to share the stage with her for the first time as we explore her favourite gospel classics, including songs written by her grandfather.’

LI-WEI QIN AND KRISTIAN CHONG SUNDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2.30PM

‘Aside from an extraordinary technical fluency, [Li-Wei] has a musical intelligence and sensitivity which is breathtaking both for its maturity and profound vision.’ – The Strad

Franz Schubert Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano in A minor, D. 821 Robert Schumann Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 INTERVAL

Chinese Australian cellist Li-Wei Qin has appeared all over the world as a soloist and chamber musician, including notable debuts with the London Symphony, Russian Philharmonic and Brussels Chamber Orchestras in recent seasons. Other major appearances include performances at both the 2008 Beijing and the 2012 London Olympic Games, and twice as a soloist at the BBC Proms. Known as a ‘superbly stylish, raptly intuitive performer’ (Gramophone), Li-Wei returns to UKARIA for the first time since 2017. As regular collaborators, Australian pianist Kristian Chong and Li-Wei share a long-standing musical bond. Described by The Age as ‘a true chamber musician at work’, Kristian has also performed with artists including Natsuko Yoshimoto, Sophie Rowell, Dale Barltrop, and Teddy Tahu Rhodes, with whom he recorded on the ABC Classic label. Kristian has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Adelaide, Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, and orchestras in the UK, New Zealand and China, as well as presenting acclaimed solo and chamber recitals in the Australian Digital Concert Hall seasons during recent lockdowns. This program has been selected by Li-Wei as a commentary on the complexity of our current times, with poignant melodies intertwining and evoking themes of sensitivity, intimacy and reconciling inner drama.

Samuel Barber Sonata for Cello and Piano in C minor, Op. 6 Astor Piazzolla Le Grand Tango Duration | Approximately two hours, including a twenty-minute interval. Note | Complimentary afternoon tea will be served during the interval. TANGO JAM 2 SATURDAY 19 FEBRUARY 7.30PM SUNDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2.30PM [SOLD OUT] The Sunday concert has been rescheduled from Sunday 21 November 2021.

‘In essence then, if classic is what remains as a model and universal is what belongs to everyone for all time, Piazzolla’s tango is universal and classical music even if he called it “music of cafés”, a creation immortal and luminous nonetheless, like a star that has become substance in the sounds of the soul.’ – Horacio Ferrer In 1960 Astor Piazzolla put together the ‘First Quintet’ – an ensemble comprised of a violin, an electric guitar, a double bass and a piano, with Piazzolla himself performing on bandoneón. The formation remains the most authentic expression of the Nuevo Tango style. Scottish accordion virtuoso James Crabb is Australia’s leading Piazzolla authority and has long dreamed of establishing his own quintet. With Sydney Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Andrew Haveron on violin, 2019 Freedman Classical Fellow Rohan Dasika on bass, young jazz superstar Joshua Meader on guitar, and awardwinning pianist Stefan Cassomenos at the keyboard, this is about as good as it gets. Together they play music by Tomás Gubitsch, Gustavo Beytelmann, Antonio Agri and José Carli in a program framed by the works of Astor Piazzolla, culminating in the great Concierto para Quinteto. Just try to resist the urge to dance.

RESONANCE: CHAMBER LANDSCAPES PRESENTED BY ADELAIDE FESTIVAL FRIDAY 11 MARCH – MONDAY 14 MARCH 2022

Adelaide Festival Concert Series curated by Erin Helyard Since we saw him rising from the pit playing a candle-lit chamber organ in Barrie Kosky’s Saul (2017), Erin Helyard has been an Adelaide Festival denizen and we are thrilled to have him at the helm of 2022’s Chamber Landscapes long weekend. As Artistic Director of Pinchgut Opera, Erin is probably the only musician in the country that commands deep respect as a scholar, conductor and curator while simultaneously being dubbed ‘Australia’s most engaging soloist’, and he wears all his hats brilliantly in this eclectic treasury of concerts at UKARIA. His chosen theme is Resonance. Of course it’s the physical property by which instruments sound and listeners hear, but, individually and as a set, the concerts explore other senses of the word, including, as Erin puts it: “the delicate influences that echo between musicians, amongst cultures, and across generations.” A stellar, all-Australian crew will present exquisite and stimulating music from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries in a resonant and restorative blend of the known and the unknown. Catch crack soloists from Sydney’s groundbreaking Pinchgut Opera performing sacred music by Monteverdi and Handel’s mini-opera Acis and Galatea; extraordinary young Adelaide cellist James Morley, unaccompanied; Hannah Lane, one of the world’s finest baroque harpists; the ASQ with the much-loved Ravel and Debussy quartets; and the phenomenal Stephanie McCallum (who adds her two hands to Erin’s at the rare

18

and beautiful 1853 Érard piano, which he’s bringing with him as oversized luggage from Sydney). There are fantastical, hilarious and deeply reflective works for wind quintet by Stravinsky, Ligeti and Elliott Gyger, and, for a unique and unmissable finale, a mindexpanding afternoon of Tibetan songs by world-renowned singer/composer Tenzin Choegyal and long-time Brisbane collaborators Camerata. Nine brilliantly conceived programs to set the wild echoes flying around Womma Mu Kurta (Mount Barker Summit) and the corners of your mind. Generously supported by Ulrike Klein AO Full program and tickets available at adelaidefestival.com.au Note | Pre-book your picnic box lunch, $35 per person (see page 23).

JOSEPH TAWADROS QUARTET SATURDAY 19 MARCH 7.30PM

Joseph Tawadros | Oud Matt McMahon | Piano Karl Dunnicliff | Double Bass James Tawadros | Riqq’ Joseph Tawadros AM is a leading oud virtuoso, brilliant composer, improvisor, storyteller and five-time ARIA winner. The Joseph Tawadros Quartet features distinguished Sydney musicians with whom he shares a near telepathic rapport - his brother James Tawadros (percussion), bassist Karl Dunnicliff and jazz pianist Matt McMahon – together their performances feature stunning invention and creativity.

Duration | Approximately two hours, including a twenty-minute interval. Tickets Adult (A) $65 Concession (C) $60 Light Meals | Cheese and charcuterie platters can be prebooked to enjoy before this concert, $25 each (see page 23).

The quartet is held together by the strength of Joseph’s original works, incorporating fusion, taking inspiration from the arabic modal system (maqam) and blending them seamlessly with elements of western classical, jazz, world, folk and even metal and bluegrass. From thrilling and furiously paced numbers to beautifully introspective and tranquil tracks, it is woven together by Joseph’s trademark virtuosity and lyricism and the striking contemporary musicality of his oud.
