The Jane Foster Collection of Pictures – Part I intimate opportunity to appreciate and understand the artists work, often knowing when and why a particular scene was depicted and its significance and meaning to the original artist. Her choices were inspired by personal vision and a close understanding of the artists’ perspective regarding certain scenes and factors such as the prevailing weather conditions.

The following twenty-eight lots represent Part I of The Collection that was owned and thoughtfully gathered together by Jane Foster, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Throughout her life, she and her husband were avid collectors of Antiques and Fine Art and developed a keen interest in paintings, often visiting galleries and auctions at various locations around England. When they moved to Guernsey in 1967, this interest continued, and Jane became a well-known and familiar viewer and buyer in and around the local auction houses, antiques fairs and dealer’s shops for over 40 years. Jane Foster was also very well known for her tireless charity work, including helping at The Guernsey Cheshire Home, Meals on Wheels and The National Trust, and for a time she helped with the Antiques stall at Guernsey’s annual ‘Le Viaër Marche’.

It is often stated that we are all just temporary custodians of such objects and it is hoped that these pictures will form part of future collections for future generations. We know that Jane certainly would have felt this way. We would like to thank the family of Jane Foster for their help in preparing these catalogue descriptions. Norman Wilkinson.
