Lot 6 A Continental sucrier with cover the domed cover with flower knop and gilt rim, painted with two vignettes depicting village scenes and scattered flowers, the base with pink ribbon tied stylised vine and flower encrusted handles to the sides and two similar painted vignettes, underglazed blue crossed swords mark to base, 8in (20cm) wide 5in (12½cm) high,, together with a pair of yellow bird and floral encrusted vases, the bases marked Spode 4649, 5in (12½cm) high (3). £60-80 See Illustration. Lot 50 WW II Biberach camp engraved aluminium cup by William (Byll) Balcombe, engraved Ted-Alice Biberach Germany 1942-43, with Christian cross, heart, anchor, trees, camp building barbed wire and other symbols, the base engraved starburst sun ‘16’ in a circle and Byll Balcombe of Everest, with black handle 3¾in (9½cm) high. £80-100 * William John Balcombe was born in Suffolk on 28th September 1891. He served in world war one, where he probably gained the skills of engraving brass in the form of ‘Trench art’. The Biberach mugs would have been highly prized and each one was individually numbered to the base. See Illustration.

Lot 51 WW II Biberach camp greeting card signed by William Henry Sandwith, the front depicting camp buildings and church, the interior with verse ‘to Nip from Kiddie Aug. 20th 1943’, watercolour, pen and ink. £20-25 * W.H.Sandwith was one of the few commercial artists who was interned at Biberach. His work often depicted the view from inside the camp and beyond and his work was copied by other talented artists in the camp. See Illustration.

Lot 69 A rare Channel Islands silver christening cup early 18th century, makers mark RB struck twice to side below rim (Robert Barbedor Guernsey and Jersey circa 1677-1704) with flared lip and beaded scroll handles, scratch engraved with the initials P. Lot 70 An extremely rare Channel Islands silver communion wine cup late 17th/early 18th century, makers mark RB struck twice to side below rim (Robert Barbedor Guernsey and Jersey circa 1677-1704) the flared bowl scratch engraved with initials E.M.G. set on a knopped stem with spreading circular foot, weight 6oz (186 grams) 5in (13cm) high. £5,000-7,000 * Provenance - This wine cup is mentioned in an Inventory taken on 27th June 1930, by W. E. Hurcomb, Valuer and Auctioneer, Calder House, Piccadilly, W.1. being the property of the 70 Robilliard family of La Piette, St Georges Esplanade, Guernsey. The description on page 54 reads; (Silver from Bank Cont.) An antique communion cup on baluster shaped stem - £10. The initials E.M.G. are likely to refer to Elizabeth Mauger, who lived in St Helier Jersey at the time this wine cup was made and this could have been a christening gift or an 18th birthday gift. The surname Mauger is one of the oldest recorded families in the Channel Islands. It is believed that this surname originated from Archbishop Mauger de Rouen, the uncle of William the Conqueror. Sarah Louisa Kilpack – An appreciation. Sarah Kilpack was an artist who was active during the second half of the 19th century. She found in the Channel Islands and in Jersey in particular where she lived for some time, an ideal environment in which she could express her enigmatic emotions with utter certainty and a great deal of charm. All that Sarah Kilpack did, and the type of person she was, seemed to be immersed in endless contradiction. She was very ordinary, but temperamentally difficult. However she created beauty and received accolades for her musical and graphical prowess. She was very shy, but often outspoken. She spurned personal relationships yet she craved attention. She was successful, but sadly died in relative poverty. Sarah was born at 42 King Street, Covent Garden, London on 15th December 1839, the second and youngest child of Thomas and Georgina Kilpack. Sarah was a tiny and shy child and preferred to stay indoors playing at the family piano and sketching rather than to play in the busy streets outside of her home. Soon a great aptitude both for music and drawing emerged. At the age of just 11 she played a Beethoven sonata during a concert at the old St James’s Hall near Piccadilly Circus. Her father encouraged her to develop her musical career, however her talent as an artist was never suppressed, because she preferred drawing. As she grew into a teenager more concerts provided the funds to afford trips into the country where she could sketch. In 1863 the loss of her mother and other family members put severe financial pressures on the young Sarah and the piano concerts were a much needed source of income for the family. But Sarah became unhappy at home and visited the Channel Islands to reflect and take stock. She drew immense inspiration from being alone with her thoughts on some remote cliff top, at one with the forces of nature. Her time in the Channel Islands was well spent, having time alone to develop her painting techniques. Her efforts were rewarded in 1867, when two of her paintings were exhibited at the eleventh Annual Exhibition of the Society of Female Artists in London. Thereafter she exhibited in every year of her life with the exception 1876, the year that her father passed away. It was near that time when she sacrificed her musical career in favour of painting full time commercially. Although maintaining a base in London she regularly travelled to the Channel Islands and struck up a friendship with the Brooke family who lived at Tamworth Villa near Colomberie, St Helier, Jersey. Another family that became lifelong friends were Jurat and Mrs Renouf who lived in a large house in St Saviours Road, Jersey. Using Jersey as a base, she often visited Guernsey and Sark on sketching trips and found solace alone on the cliffs and rocks, where her paintings sometimes seem to reflect her own moods of longing and loneliness. During the 1880s, Sarah enjoyed the best years of her life. She was earning £500 a year from her painting and given the fact that she never charged in excess of six guineas for a single picture, her output must have been prodigious. Towards the end of her life she moved back to the East End of London to nurse her half-sister Anastasia. Diminishing eyesight restricted her output, yet some her finest work was painted at this time. Sarah still kept in touch with the Renouf family in Jersey and Jurat Renouf helped pay for the funeral of Anastasia. Sarah herself sadly succumbed to ill health on 25th October 1909, however she left behind an archive of unique and original depictions of places she had visited in the Channel Islands and elsewhere, which are now greatly admired, appreciated and keenly collected 100 years later. The Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery and The Jersey Museum own a number of her pictures and many are held in private collections in France, England and the Channel Islands. The original Doyle Column at Jerbourg, which was built in 1820 is clearly visible. The lack of trees at the Pine Forest could be due to the earlier threats of French invasion. The

familiar round building, locally known as the ‘Pepper Pot’ is depicted, and is often used as a ‘fisherman’s mark’ as it is very prominent on the cliffs above Fermain. This was built to be manned by the Guernsey Militia as a sentry post, being inbetween the former barracks at Jerbourg and Fort George. 150 years ago, the area surrounding the Village de Putron was becoming more populated and this lane would have been the most used and accepted route down to the picturesque Fermain Bay, during Victorian times. Lot 121 Paul Jacob Naftel R.W.S. (British, 1817-1891) The Fairies’ Glen, St. Germain, Castel, Guernsey watercolour and bodycolour, heightened with white, signed with monogram and dated 1864 13½ x 9¾in (34½ x 25cm). £2,500-3,000 * We would like to express our sincere thanks to Gillian Lenfestey who discovered the exact location of where this watercolour was painted in Guernsey. * Paul Naftel held an annual preview in Guernsey of the watercolours he intended to submit for exhibition at The Old Watercolour Society in London, from the 1850s onwards. By doing so, he ensured that many were sold before they reached London, where the watercolours would then hopefully create further interest and lead to possible commissions. The preview he held during April 1865 was the first at his newly completed studio which he had built alongside his villa, which still stands today, ‘Millmount’ in Candie Road, St Peter Port, Guernsey, to the designs of the famous London Architect John Pollard Seddon (1827-1906). By inviting the Lieutenant Governor of the Island, his wife and other society members from the Bailiwick including the clergy, Jurats, Officers of the Garrison etc. and the Seigneur of Sark, Naftel was assured of a very wealthy clientele attending the exhibition preview. It was reported in the local newspapers that the studio was very crowded for many hours during the afternoon. Naftel showed eleven of his watercolours whilst his wife, Isabel showed seven portraits, several of which were of local society members. This no doubt would have led to her receiving further commissions. ‘The Fairies Glen, Guernsey’ was listed as No. 16 at Naftel’s preview exhibition. Naftel showed a mixture of Guernsey and Italian views, the product of a recent visit to the Italian Lakes and the Bay of Salerno.

It is believed that his father-in-law, the artist Octavius Oakley also attended the Guernsey preview, where Naftel was also fortunate in exhibiting a bust of Lord Tennyson and a small statuette, both lent by the Pre-Raphaelite poet and sculptor Thomas Woolner, who had spent his honeymoon on Guernsey a few months earlier and had met Paul and Isabel Naftel on several occasions. * The Victoria and Albert Museum in London holds a very similar watercolour The Fairies Glen, again dated 1864, depicting the same location painted from a slightly different perspective, (Their reference 39-1992 Neg. 61161) indicating that perhaps this area was one of the artists more favoured views on the Island and one that he found to be popular with his clients. Naftel had probably been familiar with this location since the mid. 1840s when he was known to have taken parties of young ladies on sketching trips to the nearby ‘Woodlands’, the former country Estate of Frederick C. Carey. We would like to thank Stephen Furniss the joint author of the Paul Jacob Naftel biography for his assistance with this catalogue description. * The distant view of the spire of St Matthews Church, Cobo provided the first clue to the possible location to the area where this watercolour was painted and that it was likely to be close to the estate of St George, Castel. There was once an ancient chapel and well in the surrounding area, and the standing water provided a further clue. St Germain chapel is mentioned in Guernsey Folk Lore by Sir Edgar MacCuloch, published 1903, from which this paragraph is extracted from page 187 - ‘The Chapel of St. Germain was in the Castel parish, and its holy well, which was regarded by locals as no less efficacious than the fountain of St. George, was situated to the northwards of that chapel. All traces of the building have long since disappeared and all we know of it is that in the Extents of Queen Elizabeth and James I a rent payable to the Crown is described as due on a piece of ground situated near the Chapel of St. Germain’ * Fairies in Victorian times. - Dating back to Pagan times it was a belief held by many people that small offerings of food should be left for ‘the little people’ at the location of holy wells. The local fairies in Guernsey were known as ‘Pouques’ and La Pouquelah is a nearby area in the Castel parish. These traditions and beliefs were handed down from generation to generation and fairies were often associated with water. During Victorian times there was a resurgence in the belief in fairies, due to many fictional books and magazine articles popularising this belief. Naftel used the title ‘Fairies well’ in several other Guernsey watercolours he painted, as a belief in the existence of fairies in Guernsey at that time was fairly common and was probably a commercial subject from an artist’s point of view.

Lot 199 Wouterus Verschuur (Dutch, 1812-1874) A traveller on horseback, meeting country folk gathering winter fuel oil on board, signed lower right and dated 1846 12 x 16in (30½ x 40½cm). £2,000-2,500

* Wouterus Verschuur was born in Amsterdam in 1812, the son of a wellknown jeweller and his wife. Verschuur learnt his trade from an early age and received tuition from the well-known and established landscape painters Cornelius Steffelaar (1797-1861) and Pieter Geradus van Os (1776-1839). During his tuition he was encouraged to copy the style of Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668) whose best known subjects

were stable scenes and horses in the countryside. Verschuur was regarded as extremely talented at the age of just 15 and exhibited a painting at ‘The Exhibition of Living Masters’ in Amsterdam in 1828. As his work became more and more appreciated, he was regarded as one of the last living Dutch artists who was faithful to the established 17th century Romanticism style of painting. Vershuur’s paintings display a recognisable

high level of technical accomplishment and inventive composition. During 1832 and 1833 he won gold medals at the annual exhibition at Felix Meritis. In 1883 he was appointed a member of The Royal Academy in Amsterdam. His reputation began to grow in other European countries and he travelled extensively and exhibited abroad. In 1885 Napolean II purchased one of his paintings at the Exposition Universalle in Paris. He frequently travelled to Germany and Switzerland and during a visit to paint in the town of Vorden in Gelderland during 1874 he became ill, and passed away on July 4th. He left behind approximately only 400 finished works, many of which are held in Museums, Institutions and private collections around the world. See Illustration.

* George Machin was a well-known Fleet Street cartoonist and often worked for the Daily Mirror as well as being commissioned to work for Tatler and Sporting Life. Affectionately known as ‘Captain Mac’ he was also a camouflage expert and war hero, who was regarded as an eccentric character in and around Dallington, East Sussex where he lived for 45 years. During WW I he found fame for his work on ‘Blighty’ the Soldiers newspaper, and served as a balloon observer behind enemy lines. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. See Illustration.

Lot 264 John Landseer A.R.A. (British, 1769-1852) Interior of Les Dehus Dolmen, Guernsey watercolour sketch, heightened with white, signed and inscribed, unframed 11½ x 8½in (29 x 21½cm). £120-150 * John Landseer was the father of Sir Edward Landseer R.A. John was engraver to King George III and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities. Les Dehus passage grave lies on the west side of Rue de Dehus in the parish of Vale, Guernsey, an area rich with archaeological history. Les Dehus was described as a ‘Druids Temple’ by John Gosselin of Guernsey in 1813. The site was extensively excavated by the Lucas family of Guernsey between 1837 & 1847. John Landseer was presumably invited over to Guernsey to record stages of the excavation by Frederick Corbin Lukis, and a series of engravings depicting the Dolmen were published in ‘Prehistory of Northern Europe’. Lot 348 Colonel Cornelius Francis James (British, 1838-1889) Temple of Mahadev, Old Mahabaleshcwar, India watercolour 16 x 12½in (41 x 64½cm) £300-350 * This temple is very sacred in India. The water that flows from the mouth of the statue of the cow is said to be the source of the river Krishna that flows beneath the temple. * Colonel C.F.James was an accomplished Military Officer as well as a respected artist, who exhibited widely. His work was admired by Queen Victoria during an exhibition in 1878 at Aldershot. An Exhibition of his works ‘An Artist On The March’ was held in Association with The Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery in 1989, and a book which includes a reproduction of this painting on page 36 gives further details of watercolours by this artist and details of his notable Military exploits and career. A copy of this book to be included with the lot. See Illustration. Lot 349 Follower of Daniel Maclise R.A. (Irish, 1806-1870) A portrait Col. Frederick Leckie and his family oil on canvas 22 x 28½in (56 x 72½cm). £1,000-1,500 * Frederick Leckie was born in 1847 and served in the war in Afghanistan 1879-80 as staff officer for transport. He was awarded the Afghanistan medal with one clasp for Kandahar. See Illustration. 349

Channel Islands auCtIons Lot 350 English School, 19th century Portrait of a fox terrier ‘Biddy’ who was injured at Chitral 1889 oil on board, signed with initials lower right 8½ x 5½in (21 x 14cm). £30-40 * In 1895, a military expedition was sent to relieve a fort in Chitral, Pakistan. Lieutenant S.M.Edwards dog, who had been a constant companion all the way from Bombay through Cashmere and Gilit was struck by an enemy bullet. Lieutenant Edwards was captured and he and his dog became prisoners of war. Biddy later recovered and died of old age in Sandhurst, Kent. See Illustration. 350
