Adventure... bring it on As Chief Scout there really is so much that I love about Scouting. From the fantastic people I meet as I travel across the UK who give up their time to help young people fulfil their potential; to the young people themselves who have so much enthusiasm and such an adventurous spirit. It wasn’t long ago that we were welcoming Great Tower and Woodhouse Park to the Scout Activity Centres family. Just 12 months on, I’m really excited that we can offer even more thrilling activities and events at our two new centres at Yr Hafod in Snowdonia, Wales and Crawfordsburn in Northern Ireland. Scout Activity Centres provide young people and adults with unique access to great activities and experiences. Each centre is different and has its own character. Friendly staff are at hand to help promote Scouting as the leading provider of outdoor adventure. With so many opportunities in such diverse centres, Scouts of all ages have access to a variety of events, activities, terrain and accommodation – so there’s something for everyone. Welcome to Scout Activity Centres
This brochure has been specially designed for you, our members. Scout Activity Centres are all operated by The Scout Association – the UK’s largest mixed youth organisation. Our vision is to develop a network of Scout Activity Centres across the UK available to all. We already have sites at Downe, Ferny Crofts, Gilwell Park, Great Tower, Hawkhirst, Woodhouse Park and Youlbury. The addition of Crawfordsburn in Northern Ireland and Yr Hafod in Wales in 2012 have helped us come closer to realising that goal. Scout Activity Centres allow young people and adults to access quality outdoor experiences and facilities to ensure the possibility of progression, and to promote Scouting as the leading UK provider of outdoor education. Any income generated is reinvested into our centres and Scouting across the UK.

Our Scout Activity Centres offer amazing outdoor experiences including a mix of activity days and self and full programme ideas at affordable prices. In 2013, we remain committed to extending the opportunity for groups to complete a range of activity badges, awards and training courses across our sites. With nine fantastic locations across the UK, over 50 activities to choose from, and a range of programmes and courses on offer, a Scout Activity Centre trip is the perfect choice for your group. With over 100 years of experience, we’ve been delivering safe outdoor adventure longer than anyone else. All our centres operate with an exceptional level of safety standards and systems - this is at the core of what we do. As part of this we work with a number of external bodies including AALA, Adventuremark. BCU, LOtC, MLC, MLUK, and RYA.

What we do 1. Self programme The classic Scout programme aimed at those who want to run elements of their visit themselves. With camping or indoor accommodation options in one of our purposebuilt lodges, you can choose any number of the instructed activity sessions on offer. Self programme is ideal for those who have a clear idea of what they want to cover during their visit, or are experienced leaders. Many of our activity sessions deliver badge requirements. 2. Full programme We will work with you to understand your requirements when you book in order to build a tailor-made package that meets the specific objectives of your group. Full catering can be provided with an option of indoor accommodation or camping, including all equipment.

Skills exchange: If you are new to Scouting or feel uncertain about running a group camp, we offer an intermediate option between self and full programme. Our staff will work with you in designing the programme and support you with each stage of its delivery. These visits will complement your Nights Away training (either before or after), allowing you to experience a camp first hand without the stress of planning and implementing the whole programme. Activity Days: If you wish to bring your group to your local centre for the day we can customise a fun-packed day of activities based on your time constraints and needs.
3. Badge courses Bring your group to one of our centres and complete one of a number of badges during your stay. With several badges for each section to choose from, taking between just a few hours to a few days, our experienced staff and instructors will ensure that you and your group get the most out of your visit and cover all the areas needed to complete the badge.* 4. Network and adult courses As well as activities for young people, we also organise a number of courses for our adult volunteers at our centres throughout the year. We realise that leaders need time away to have some fun or to develop their skills.* 5. Events We organise and run a number of large events across our centres throughout the year for all Members from Beavers to adults.* * See our ‘Programme, Training and Event Guide 2013 – Helping to make achieving easy’ at the back of this brochure for a full list of badge courses, training programmes and events.

LOCATION On the North Down coastline, ten miles from Belfast, 3 miles from Bangor and 8 miles from George Best Airport. ABOUT CRAWFORDSBURN Situated within beautiful Crawfordsburn Country Park, Crawfordsburn Scout Activity Centre covers an area of 22 acres comprising two large campsite fields, wooded areas, two accommodation lodges and activity areas.
SURROUNDINGS Helen’s Bay train station on the main Belfast/Bangor line is only a 15 minute walk from the site and from there the seaside town of Bangor and the bustling city of Belfast are within easy reach. Close to the site are two leading heritage attractions, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum and Titanic Belfast, an acclaimed new visitor experience devoted to the history of this famous ship.

DownE
LOCATION Only eight miles from Junction 4 of the M25, just outside Orpington. ABOUT DOWNE
A beautiful, wooded 86-acre site, situated close to Biggin Hill in rural Kent. Downe has been welcoming young people to its centre for over 80 years. The centre is part of a proposed World Heritage Site due to its long association with Charles Darwin. The famous naturalist once roamed the woodland, carrying out experiments. Surroundings
Downe is only 16 miles from the centre of London and all its attractions. It is also next door to Down House, where Darwin once lived.

FERNY CROFTS Ten miles from the centre of Southampton and five miles from Lyndhurst. ABOUT FERNY CROFTS Situated in the heart of the New Forest with all its natural beauty and attractions, the centre is the ideal location for environmental as well as adventurous activities.

GILWELL PARK LOCATION Around 10 minutes from Junction 26 of the M25 and only 25 minutes on the train from central London.
ABOUT GILWELL PARK Set in 108 acres, Gilwell Park is in north-east London on the edge of Epping Forest. It has the feel of a country estate with all the advantages of being located close to the centre of the capital. Surroundings
Epping Forest is on the doorstep and with 6,000 acres of natural riches, it’s the perfect spot for mountain biking. There is a horse riding school and sailing club nearby.

LOCATION Great Tower is situated close to the eastern shore of Lake Windermere, midway between Bowness and Newby Bridge.

Situated as it is, Yr Hafod offers one of the best placed Mountain centre in North Wales. Standing at the head of the Nantffrancon valley, Yr Hafod is an ideal location from which to explore the biggest and boldest mountains in Wales within the Snowdonia National Park. ABOUT YR HAFOD Yr Hafod is a special place from which to enjoy the challenges of the mountains to the full, with the security of competent leadership and the provision of quality accommodation. SURROUNDINGS Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve is a ten minute walk away, while crags with climbs and scrambles at all levels of difficulty surround Hafod. Y S A E G N I V E I H C A Making We understand that there is a demand on your time to help your young people achieve as many badges and awards as they can. That’s why we launched our ‘Making Achieving Easy’ Guide last year, a catalogue of courses which meet the requirements of activity badges and awards at our centres. With the addition of two new centres, Crawfordsburn in Northern Ireland and Yr Hafod in Wales, we’re pleased and excited to be able to offer more groups across the UK the opportunity to complete a wider range of badges, training courses and events in 2013. From the Communicator badge for Beavers and Cubs to Patrol Leader weekends and new Ultimate Adventures for Scouts and older sections. The focus for 2013 is still very much on ‘making it easy’ for you as leaders to help young people gain badges as they progress through Scouting, but just as important is supporting members in our older sections to become qualified young leaders across a range of disciplines. You can enjoy Beaver Leader Residential training, NICAS climbing awards, NGBs in mountain leader training and DofE training weekends. These courses can be included in your programme whether you are visiting our centres for an evening, weekend or taking part in a weeklong camp. You can run some of these programmes yourself but the courses in our guide offer you the easier option of allowing our instructors to run them for you.
The list of badge courses available is not exclusive – please contact us directly if you have specific requirements and we will do our best to design a programme to suit. Many of the courses can also be run on request (subject to availability) as well as on the specified dates as advertised in our ‘Programme, Training and Event Guide 2013’. FAQS What level of support can I expect from SCOUT ACTIVITY CENTRE staff? As much or as little as you need. Our programmes are designed to give flexibility. Our centre teams have been helping groups organise their trips for a long time and will offer advice and support to make your visit a success. Do you have facilities for people with special needs? Many of our facilities have full disabled access and toilet facilities. Please contact your chosen centre for details. Our instructors will make every effort to include those with varying needs during the activity sessions. Please ensure you make the centre aware of any special requirements when booking so that the necessary arrangements can be made or an alternative activity offered. Do I need to stay with my group the whole day? Each activity group needs to be supervised during instructed activity sessions. Our staff will take responsibility for safety during these sessions however, the group leader will be responsible for the young people, including their behaviour, whilst on site. Are your activity instructors qualified? All our staff go through an intensive training process and will be qualified, where appropriate, with the relevant National Governing Body (NGB) qualification for the activity. Where no appropriate NGB exists they will be trained in-house and assessed.

Can we run some of our own activities? You are welcome to run as many activities as you wish. Our staff can deliver as little or as much of your programme as you choose. Select a Full Programme and we deliver everything, or choose the classic Self Programme option and build your own around a few instructed sessions. We have a selection of self-instructed activity sessions available at each centre. Do I need a nights away permit to use the Centres? The leader in charge of the visit will need to hold the appropriate Nights Away Permit for the type of visit you are undertaking. Some of our badge courses are designed to support less confident leaders or those who have recently acquired their Nights Away Permit. If your leaders do not hold Nights Away Permits, our staff can support the planning of a Full Programme option and deliver it in full with you as leaders in support of this. Can young people camp on site without leader supervision? If the young people in question hold their Event Passport then we welcome them to use our sites for camping. Why SCOUT ACTIVITY CENTRES? We pride ourselves on offering excellent facilities and activities across our group of centres. Any funds we generate are used to develop our sites and Scouting in the UK as a whole. Our centre teams benefit from both full time and seasonal staff who are highly trained in their appropriate fields to ensure you and your group get the best experience possible.
