The Carbon Trust is a global climate consultancy working with businesses, governments and financial institutions to transform the markets central to a decarbonised future –energy, buildings, industry, transport and food systems. Todate, our 400 experts have helped set 200+ science-based targets and guided 3,000+ organisations and cities across five continents on their route to Net Zero.
In relation to offshore wind, the Carbon Trust has been at the forefront of the offshore wind industry for over 15 years, working closely with governments, developers, supply chains, and innovators to accelerate the development of offshore wind. We support technology designers to reduce the cost of energy, deliver innovation programmes to achieve cost and technology risk reduction, and work with governments and corporates to understand and implement offshore wind policy.
We have a total of five joint industry research and development programmes. These all take an industry-led approach to research and development, ensuring that the projects commissioned are designed to tackle issues facing developers within the sector.

Our five Joint Industry Programmes (JIP) on research and development with a combined total of 18 offshore wind developers and public bodies:
The Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) is our flagship programme, running for 15 years focused on reducing the cost of bottom fixed offshore wind. Involves nine offshore wind developers and has an R&D spend of over £120m to date.
The Offshore Renewables Joint Industry Programme (ORJIP) aims to reduce consenting and environmental risks for offshore projects. The partners in this programme include offshore wind developers as well as representatives from the Crown Estate and Marine Scotland.
The Integrator is designed to examine the interplay between offshore wind, existing infrastructure, and other technologies to highlight opportunities for innovation investment.
The Sustainability Joint Industry Programme (SUSJIP) aims to decarbonise offshore wind farm developments and support developers to achieve net zero targets.
The Floating Wind Joint Industry Programme (FLWJIP) investigates the challenges and opportunities of developing commercial-scale floating wind farms. It currently includes seventeen offshore wind developers as partners.
