OBSERVATIONS
The sides dominated by buildings. Contemporary architecture expressed by Potter building. Two large elms cover site front. Physics building, the potter café’ and Ian-‐ potter museum
ON SITE DEDUCTIONS & ANALYSIS High-‐rise buildings and vegetation give the illusion of isolation to site. The site pops out.
Potter café’ plays an important role in the frequency of people to the site Property of Melbourne Other places in university and site sits on Melbourne university is top of bunker accessed by students/staffs/visitors more often Cable wires, water and Site can easily excavated, telecommunication runs but up to 1m deep due to along pedestrian bunker. pathway Coffee/bakery smell Potter café’ is essential to sometimes, but mostly design fresh Trams and vehicles Noise pollution exists but travel busily on not to the limit of Swanston road, chit mitigating it. Bunker buried underneath, 1m depths, artificial soil covers 20m x 20m site measurement approximate Students, visitors and staff usually move around during daytime mainly due to Potter café’. Grass cover, potted plants around areas, bush present and two elm trees stand right in the front. Site exposed to direct sunlight during day mostly, afternoon is very shady. Wind controlled by surrounding high-‐rise buildings. Site has a high bump towards Physics building and steep slope greets as the access to site. Artificial soil structure. Birds Interaction can be achieved with design. Need to consider museum and café’ visitors and address it.
Design intent is constraint to not being able to take out bunker Boundaries established by Melbourne university People from various walks of life use the area, design intent needs to mold to this. Feeling of a nature strip.
Mostly shady on the site giving plenty opportunity to design flexibly. Easy access should be considered in design. Notion can or cannot be used for design intent

CONSTRAINTS & OPPORTUNITIES CONSTRAINTS Removing bunker is not an option thereby affecting design intent. Open space which has to comply with University and their future plans. Vegetation considered as an opportunity as well as constraint.
OPPORTUNITIES Vegetation can be used in such a way that it’s welcoming a visitor to the site. Cool amount of shadow already occurs on site. Add a discovery/experiential quality to space and students, visitors and staff would be more willing to use area.

FORM BUILDING
The object i obtained from the Op shop is colored wires. I chose this object due to the versatile and manipulative nature of the material. This material could be used directly to a design or the properties can be derived to bring form to the brief. I chose the latter expression because I belive i can achieve a much more successful design by using the notion of the material.
After much deliberation, I came to the conclusion that the best type of material to portray the fluid and versatile nature of the wire would be paper. I chose to go with oil paper because it gives a certain transparent texture to the whole outlook, thus by providing a demure outer approach. The demure effect was apparent in Victor Cobb’s painting, Nostaligia. The following prototype was the very first idea I produced. This idea illuminates an expression of smooth yet warying lengths of strips to create space.

CONCEPT DESIGN MODEL Prototype Ideation to create open space and a place to congregate
Experiential Space 1: This space is semi open and provides opportunity to converse/work. The space can be occupied by people who would want to have a private conversation or to take shelter from the rain.
Experiential Space 2: This area allows a user to enclose themselves in a cocoon like environment. It is also a semi open area with the capacity to hold a large amount of users. The cocoon like shape has the audacity to play with natural light as the sun moves in it’s path.
Experiential Space 3: This is the open area of the structure. This area allows users to interact with nature by being in the open surrouding. Users can work/chat/play in the area without any restrictions.

THE ‘ROLL IT’ EXPERIMENTAL HOUSE This is a design by students, Christian Zwick and Konstantin Jerabek from the University of Karlsruhe in Germany. The whole concept behind this one-ofa-kind abode according to the two was to explore “mobile and space-efficient construction.”

PUZZLE TABLE SET This is a design by Bhouse architects for a table set. When table and chair set is used, the furniture is like a puzzle that must be prepared, then when the tables and chairs are not used, set of this furniture can be put together into a shape.
ZEPHYR SOFA BY ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS The Zephyr sofa is inspired by natural formations eroded by wind: its sinuous shape generated from subtractive processes that carve solid matter. The resulting language gives increased ergonomic properties and flexibility; allowing for multiple layouts.
