About the Conference MAY 6-9, 2012 Each year, nearly 600 business incubation practitioners and economic development professionals gather to explore strategies for entrepreneur support at NBIA’s International Conference on Business Incubation. Participants attend in-depth workshops, educational sessions, incubator tours and receptions, and the opportunities to connect with colleagues through informal discussions are plentiful. Through these training and networking opportunities, attendees learn about incubator sustainability, entrepreneur support services, client funding options, industry best practices and more.
NBIA’s 26th International Conference on Business Incubation will take place May 6-9 in Atlanta, Ga. Atlanta is known as a city that welcomes economic development, as 10 companies that are headquartered there – including The Home Depot, UPS, The Coca-Cola Co. and Delta Air Lines – made the 2011 Fortune 500, a list of the largest corporations in the United States. The city is also easy to get to, as many domestic and international flights are routed through HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport. Atlanta has a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot summers and mild winters. In May, the average high is 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius), and the average low is 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius). If the weather is nice, you’ll want to visit Atlanta Botanical Garden or Centennial Olympic Park, a 21-acre park built in celebration of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. On a rainy day, you can check out some of the city’s indoor attractions, such as the High Museum of Art, the Georgia Aquarium or the Inside CNN Studio Tour. With all that the city of Atlanta and the NBIA conference have to offer, you won’t want to miss out!

miss out! NBIA’s Incubator Management Certificate Program NBIA members can earn an Incubator Management Certificate by completing a series of training requirements. Two of the required workshops, Serving Client Companies and Facilities Management, are being offered as part of the Preconference Institute (see workshop descriptions). During the International Conference on Business Incubation, NBIA will offer a number of 75-minute sessions that also will satisfy certificate requirements. Certificate program participants must attend five of these sessions, which will be offered Monday, May 7, through Wednesday, May 9. We will have more information available about fulfilling these requirements as the conference draws nearer. NBIA Conference Sessions NBIA’s 2012 conference will feature more than 60 sessions that cover topics in business incubation and economic development. The session formats are lectures, panels and roundtable discussions, and there is sure to be something for a variety of experience levels. Topics include strategies for achieving incubator sustainability, innovative client funding techniques, methods for measuring economic impact and more. Certificate Workshop Saturday, May 5 :: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Good incubators provide entrepreneurs with programs and services to help them succeed. These programs should be targeted to the specific needs of incubator clients and delivered in a cost-effective way, with the goal of developing successful start-ups. The presenters will explain how to draw an effective lineup of client services, covering topics such as the importance of value-added programs for clients, various incubator service delivery models, how to help your clients attract outside capital and more.
Facilities Management Certificate Workshop Sunday, May 6 :: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
In addition to running entrepreneur support programs, most incubator managers also are responsible for a physical facility, with duties such as writing and enforcing lease agreements, contracting for utilities and deciding how to allocate space. This workshop will focus on facility design, planning, function, maintenance and operation; policies and procedures will not be discussed. The presenter will cover various aspects of managing an incubator facility, including new building construction vs. renovation projects, energy conservation, and strategies for generating revenue and controlling costs.

This workshop will provide incubator managers with a fundamental understanding of the consequences and implications of many of the typical legal issues faced by an incubator. It is not intended to replace the competent legal counsel required for actual issues but to provide the incubator manager with an in-depth understanding of legal situations they can expect to face. It also provides an understanding of issues their clients typically face.
Incubation Business Models: The Path to Sustainability Sunday, May 6 :: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
In this advanced workshop, you’ll look at the elements of a sustainable incubator business model, including customer segments, value propositions, key partnerships, revenue streams and more. Meet in the Convention Lobby near NBIA’s Registration Desk at 9:30 a.m. You will be transported by bus to the High Museum of Art, which has more than 11,000 pieces in its permanent collection and is the leading art museum in the southeastern United States. After touring the museum, you will visit the global headquarters of CNN. During this 55-minute guided walking tour, you’ll learn about CNN’s coverage of news events that have shaped the world and get a behindthe-scenes look at the studios. Lunch will be on your own at the CNN Center Food Court. The bus will return to the hotel by 3 p.m.
NBIA New Member & Nonmember Reception If you are a new NBIA member or interested in learning more about NBIA, attend the New Member/Nonmember Reception. NBIA staff and veteran members will explain how to get the most from your membership. A round-robin with NBIA board members also will provide a quick introduction to NBIA leaders and jump-start your conference networking. Immediately following this event, head to the opening reception with new friends and colleagues.
Opening Reception & Expo The opening reception is the official kickoff event for NBIA’s conference. Your first stop is the registration desk, where you’ll collect your name badge and materials. Breakfast First-Time Attendee Orientation & NBIA Expo This special orientation offers first-time conference attendees a chance to learn how to make the most of the NBIA conference experience. You’ll meet other new attendees and hear more about how NBIA can help you. The Advanced Technology Development Center – part of the Enterprise Innovation Institute at Georgia Tech – helps Georgia’s technology entrepreneurs launch and build successful companies. Founded in 1980, ATDC has helped create millions of dollars in tax revenues by graduating more than 120 companies, which together have raised more than a billion dollars in outside financing. ATDC won NBIA’s 1996 Randall M. Whaley Incubator of the Year award. During this tour, you will visit ATDC Headquarters, located at Georgia Tech’s Technology Square campus in Midtown Atlanta, and ATDC Biosciences, located in Georgia Tech’s Ford Environmental Science and Technology Building. NBIA will shuttle buses between the hotel and the two facilities. Meet in the hotel lobby at 4:15 p.m.

Luncheon With Keynote Address: Ani Agnihotri Ani Agnihotri is the founder and president of IIIrd Millennium Technologies, a technology company that provides information technology and outsourcing solutions. He is also the founder and managing partner of the U.S.-India Business and Research Center, a management consulting company focused on providing assistance to firms in India and the United States that wish to relocate overseas. Agnihotri serves as the chairmanelect of the Asian-American Heritage Foundation, which works to promote the historical contributions made by those of Asian and Pacific heritage in the United States.

Georgia Incubator Tour As part of this tour, you’ll visit the Gwinnett Innovation Park and the Georgia BioBusiness Center. Meet in the Convention Lobby near NBIA’s Registration Desk at 12:45 p.m. The buses are expected to return to the hotel by 9 p.m. A boxed lunch will be provided on the bus on the way to the Gwinnett Innovation Park. Dinner will be on your own in downtown Athens, Ga., after the tour of the Georgia BioBusiness Center. The Gwinnett Innovation Park, located in a suburb of Atlanta, is the longest-running privately funded incubator program in the country. The program provides entrepreneurs with access to office and manufacturing space, telecommunication and network infrastructure, a community of entrepreneurs, business advice and planning, and financial capital. Since 1990, the program has been home to almost 85 companies. Its client, ChemFree Corp., received NBIA’s 1999 Client of the Year award, and in 2010, another client, Wi-Ex, received the award. The Georgia BioBusiness Center is located on the University of Georgia’s campus about 90 minutes away from Atlanta in Athens, Ga.
