HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME I can’t believe it’s time for the Autumn Term edition of sUCCess already – the term has flown by and once again it’s been packed full of excitement and activity. Exam results in August were superb and we made quite a splash on TV with BBC Breakfast and ITV’s Border TV. At the same time, our very own PE star Jenny Evans competed in the British Triathlon event in Canada to get another great term of sporting successes under way. We’ve had various trips away, including the Year 7 trip to France and outings to a Hindu temple, heritage museums and theatres; we adapted an empty retail space in the New Squares for exhibitions of students’ work in Design and Art and much, much more. This highlight of this term was – as ever – Prize Day, with Emmerdale guest star Adam Thomas. Finally, after a busy term we will conclude activities with our drama production Animal Farm, BTEC pantomime Oliver! and carol services in the Penrith Methodist Church before breaking up for Christmas to the sounds of the UCC Christmas single Can UCC It’s Christmas – another show-stopping release by staff and pupils. I wish you all a restful holiday and very Happy Christmas. Nigel H. Pattinson

PRAYER SPACE AT UCC
UCC was lucky enough to create a prayer space, a soul space which enabled our students to explore faith and spirituality in a creative and interactive way. The experience was shared by students’ right across the school from Year 7 all the way to Year 13. It has been described as an eternal space where it was calm and peaceful, students asked to stay longer, many of them returning in their own time. Students had an opportunity to reflect upon the big questions in life; why do we suffer? What is love? Students spent time letting go, asking for forgiveness and accepting it. So many enjoyed dreaming of a beautiful future and felt empowered to making it happen. Many enjoyed the silence and the stillness to “really be me and think about what is important to me.” UCC students showed their empathy for the wider world by offering prayers for all life in the world, and for those who have died. We feel great appreciation for the way our students embraced, engaged and applied emotional intelligence towards an exploration of the fundamental issues of human life coupled with the everyday challenges of academic progress. Students comments included: “awesome!!”, “if you’ve had a bad day, you can come clear your mind, everyone is valued, nobody judges you” (9HJF boys), “love having this space to think about all of us in the world” and “I really should do this more often, I didn’t realise how much I carried!” Nicola McCanny

NATIONAL POETRY DAY WITH DONAVAN CHRISTOPHER Donavan Christopher, who returned to UCC as this year’s guest for National Poetry Day, showcased his poetry to Year 7s through the theme of the day – ‘remember’. In the afternoon he was one of the judges in our annual rap competition. The standard of entries was exceptional but there could only be one winner – congratulations to ‘The Memories’ from 7NB. After an excited journey to the south coast of England & a sleepless crossing on the ferry, a bleary-eyed UCC trip arrived on the sun-kissed west coast of France. This was our 14th visit & the town of La Rochelle provided the perfect backdrop for exploring the attractions of the Charente region, with its fantastic beaches and amazing history. With trips to the town of Cognac, the Ile de Rey, a language hunt in the local market, incredible ice-creams & dips in the sea, this fun & exhausting week of exploration & friendships finally ended with a visit to the D-Day beach & museum at Arromanches on the journey home.

It was another brilliant year for UCC students as the 2014 examination results were published on 14th and 21st August 2014. A’ Level results day got off to an early start as the TV crew, producer and presenter Alison Freeman arrived at 5am for the live coverage for BBC Breakfast TV. Despite the added stress of the TV cameras students’ celebrated outstanding results and the successful confirmation of University places. Joanne and Jack McAtear, Sally Black, Flora Blackburn and Greg Hall all appeared on national TV in coverage which was hugely well received by TV bosses in London and across the country. A week later 241 Year 11 students found themselves in front of ITV cameras as they collected their GCSE results. In a year in which national standards at 5+ A*-C grades including English & mathematics have declined by 7% to 53%, at Ullswater results held firm with 63% of students achieving this standard. Well done! Mr Pattinson

PROFESSOR PRESTON-SHOOT VISIT Professor Michael Preston-Shoot, Dean of the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences at the University of Bedfordshire, visited UCC on Thursday 20th November 2014 and gave an inspirational lecture to the sixth form entitled 'On the threshold of new dreams'. This was followed by a robust debate on many diverse and topical social issues. An academic since 1988, and with an international reputation for research and publications in the fields of law and ethics, Professor Preston-Shoot also visited classes with a focus on Philosophy, Ethics and Health & Social Care. After a thoroughly enjoyable time he left saying that he learnt much from the students and looked forward to a return visit. Rob Jackson
