HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME Welcome to the Summer edition of our Success magazine, which marks the end of an incredibly successful and busy year at UCC and my first as a very proud Headteacher. I continue to be very grateful and appreciative of the tremendous work and commitment of all of our staff and students in such a demanding term. We said our farewells to two outstanding year groups – our current Years 11 and 13 – at their summer proms and we are very optimistic that they will continue the successes of previous years in their examination results. We wish them every success and happiness in their next stage of their education as we now look forward to welcoming two hundred and thirty plus students to our Year 7 in September; their recent induction day was an enormously enjoyable and successful day. Meanwhile, the last few weeks have seen our young athletes performing in regional finals in Blackpool and Wigan; our musicians demonstrating their talents at the summer concert; sports day; the Young Chef competition; hosting Taiwanese students; art trips to Manchester, along with the truly incredible exhibition of exam work in art; the DT exhibition; a dance trip to Liverpool; cricket finals and a racing team competing at the Croft Circuit. I could continue but will leave the outstanding images and articles enclosed tell the story from here! I would like to wish all of our community a restful and enjoyable summer and we look forward to another set of record-breaking results for our students in August. Mr Ellery
MATHS CHALLENGE The UKMT run maths challenges for students of all ages, inviting entries from all UK based schools. Over 300,000 students took part in this year’s Junior Maths challenge. UCC entered 30 Year 7 and 8 students. We were delighted to see four of our mathematicians awarded with Bronze certificates. Bev John

LOST ART THEATRE ALUMNI WORKSHOP Our Year 9 future GCSE Drama students enjoyed a workshop from the Lost Art Theatre Company. Our pupils worked alongside members of the cast and their director, Jane Reardon, to explore ways of devising theatre around the topic of suffragettes. Building from the work of their forthcoming production ‘Number 8’, the cast worked alongside our pupils to help them develop skills for creating new theatre, using a range of techniques and styles. The dark history of the topic offered a wealth of opportunities and the Year 9’s worked with diligence, focus and a professionalism that drew positive comment. Matt Forrest

This year’s UCC’s Got Talent was another huge success, with 10 superb acts including musicians, dancers, gymnasts, magicians and a ventriloquist. Harry took this year’s title with an outstanding performance of an original song; Georgina and Thomas were runners up and Megan came third. The evening focused on raising money for ‘Women v Cancer’ with a grand total of £800. Thank you for all the support! Greg Key

We’ve just held UCC’s very first Creative Futures Festival; a month of events that celebrate all the diverse & wonderful creative opportunities UCC has to offer. The festival encompasses everything from creative writing & film to knitting & listening to the brand new UCC Street Band. Students participated in a plethora of activities for which they gained merits, pledges & prizes donated by ‘Specialist Crafts’. Some events were open to the wider community, for example U-Fest, the summer music festival, ‘Number 8’ a theatre performance by The Lost Art Theatre Company, made up of alumni students, & the primary art exhibition held at the EVAN Art Gallery in Penrith. Another great year of work experience for our Year 10 students saw them learning about the demands and responsibilities of the world of work in a wide range of local businesses, including vets, cafes, schools, garages, farms. Some students even went out of the county to carry out their placements, e.g. to IBM. It has been a real pleasure to hear the students talk about their experiences with such enthusiasm and to see how their confidence has grown. We are very grateful for the time and effort that employers put into making the experience such a success for all concerned. Shirley Ivinson

PROM 2018 15
At the end of an impressive exam season, the majority of Year 11s rushed home after their Physics exam on Friday morning to prepare for the social highlight of the year – the Year 11 Prom. The first wave of limos, sports and vintage vehicles arrived at the Roundthorn Country House Hotel at 6.15 p.m. and the Oscars-style red-carpet arrivals continued apace for over half an hour. Socialising in the gardens allowed everyone to agree how truly classy the leavers of 2018 looked. It was the perfect setting for a stunning year group and provided a fabulous way to wish one and all the very best for their GCSEs and beyond. Simon Cooper

CROFT CIRCUIT RACE
14 students took the Green Power racing car to Croft Circuit Darlington. First up were the Year 7s who were soon flagged off the circuit for having an issue with their timing device but all students got several racing laps of the circuit. After a few mechanical modifications over the lunch break, the Year 8 students entered the second race. We finished the race 5th in class, which was a great result for us. The students were amazing, our pit stops and driver changes could have rivalled any F1 team. Well done Crew! Ian Hardy

This is a multi-opportunity to experience local high quality music, to explore career opportunities and options and to engage with those in the industry.
