HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME Welcome to our Spring edition of sUCCess, which is as ever a bumper edition filled with the exciting activities and expeditions that are such a remarkable feature of every term at this brilliant school. Bugsy Malone was a triumph; a sell-out over three nights and a wonderful showcase of individual and group talent in the performing arts. Our fine artists, linguists, sports stars, budding film-makers, potential wizards, dancers, rugby prodigies, gymnasts, scientists and fund-raisers all feature in this latest LRC-produced publication. This has been another inspiring Spring Term at UCC and with 264 applications for next years’ Year 7 it’s easy to see why the school continues to generate so much excitement and confidence in this community and beyond. sUCCess breeds success and our students look forward eagerly to seeing what their peers and friends are getting up to in each edition. Mr Pattinson

2017 SKI TRIP TO THE AOSTA VALLEY Over half term 27 students travelled 24 hours by bus to reach Pila in Italy’s Aosta Valley for a week’s skiing. In beautiful weather all the students developed their skiing skills, with the beginners finishing their holiday on a difficult red slope! The UCC students were nominated for ‘group of the year’ from over 40 schools who had travelled to Pila with Interski that week. Emma Matthews

FOOTBALL AND NETBALL TOUR
Forty-two Year 7 students took part in the PE Department’s annual football and netball tour to Boreatton Park, Shropshire. The 21 footballers took part in academy-style sessions led by coaches from the FA; the netballers spent the weekend in a tournament of 12 teams with amazing results: the yellow team finished 9th, the blues were 3rd and the red team won the tournament! The outdoor activities – from tunnelling to the ‘giant swing’ – were also very popular with students, who were commended by the coaches, umpires and staff who worked with them. Katie Armstrong

UCC presented a stage version of Alan Parker’s celebrated 1976 film musical set in 1920s Chicago: Bugsy Malone. The cast came from all year groups and worked long hours to produce three shows full of entertainment and star quality. The production was a huge success with the sixth form students leading by example to create such a professional production. All students involved should be very proud of what they achieved. Congratulations to the UCC Gymnastics squad, who performed brilliantly in the County Gymnastics Competition. After months of training the under-19 squad won ‘Team Silver’ medal and the under-14s won the ‘Team Bronze’ medal. A special mention to Molly who also won the under-14 ‘Individual Silver’ medal. The UCC gymnasts also gave a fantastic showcase display that saw them performing double back-flicks into back tucks and somersaulting over a vault and each others’ heads! All the gymnasts performed to an exceptionally high standard and the talent displayed on the evening was superb. Well done to everyone involved! Karen Castle
