HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME There can be no doubt that Spring has arrived. The sun’s made an appearance for the first time since last June, the birds are singing and the Spring edition of sUCCess magazine has been delivered to form tutors’ pigeon-holes… and what an edition! Full, as usual, with the most exciting and diverse activities, which have ensured another excellent period for pupils of the school. With Year 10 mock interviews; visitors from France; opportunities for young scientists to discover how eyes work and to experiment with acids and alkalis; with pupils improving their cycling skills and others winning major cycling titles; with trips to London, Edinburgh, Shropshire and Birmingham… not to mention the hugely popular Harry Potter night. I’m also delighted to see our new PTA “Ullswater Friends’ Association” getting off to a flying start and our freshly elected School Council making its views known. But the highlights of the term for me have been 600 or more students getting involved in the “Branch Out” book review competition and seeing one of the very best school productions ever in the shape of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which was two hours of sheer joy, an exciting collaboration between music, dance and drama and a promise of even greater things to come. It’s been another absolutely inspiring Spring term and evidence that the school continues to go from strength to strength both inside our classrooms and in the wider activities available outside. Mr Pattinson

STUDENT COUNCIL

A new Student Council was elected just before Christmas. As well as continuing the good work done in previous years with Penrith Futures, they have drawn up a list of school issues and will make recommendations on student welfare. Head of Citizenship, Mr Kent, is looking forward to working with a lively group of councillors with strong views, who want to make a difference to the college and the town. Greg Kent

NEW PTA ‘THE ULLSWATER FRIENDS’ LAUNCHES AT PARENTS EVENINGS

UCC’s very own PTA, ‘The Ullswater Friends’, got under way at Year 10 parents evening on Thursday 10th of March. Parents who are keen to support the school gave up a couple of hours to serve refreshments to fellow parents and teachers alike. The ‘Ullswater Friends’ see their role as involving supporting the school and fundraising for specific projects. In the summer they are looking to organise an “Ullswater fashion Show”! If you would like to get involved please contact our Governor Jane Taylor (jane.taylor@durham.ac.uk). George McWilliams

BEACONSIDE SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

Year 8 students visited Beaconside Primary School as part of National Science Week; this year’s theme was “making things move”. The students demonstrated their designs, including water rockets, and helped the younger pupils build designs of their own – many of which were “very interesting“! A fabulous day was had by all. LONDON ART TRIP

The Sixth Form Art students had four days and three nights to experience the sights and sounds of London. We crammed a lot in, visiting the Royal Academy, Portrait Gallery, National Gallery, Victoria & Albert, Tate Britain, Newport Street Gallery, Tate Modern and British Museum. We also took in a performance of “The Play That Went Wrong” and rode on the London Eye. Owen Smith

LORD TAVERNER’S REGIONAL BOCCIA TOURNAMENT Following success in the Cumbrian round, five UCC students, from Years 7 to 11, represented Ullswater and Cumbria in the Lord Taverner’s Regional Boccia Tournament in Liverpool. The competition was very strong and although the team won a couple of matches, they didn’t go through to the next round. Congratulations to all who took part! Rachel Ridley

GIRLS RUGBY

On Tuesday 1 March, UCC girls rugby players combined with QEGS to make two U15 rugby squads to compete in a county competition; the top two sides at the end of the day would go on to a regional competition in Ryton. After some superb playing, both UCC teams went through: UCC2 winning the league and UCC1 coming second, having lost just one game (to UCC2). The girls were superb, with everyone giving their all for the team. Greg Key
