HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME Is it possible to worry about things going too well? It occasionally crosses my mind that the progress of the school has been more rapid and uncomplicated than I could ever have imagined when I first came here for a look around in April 2009. This year will see the return at some point of Ofsted as part of the two-year programme of visits. Our results will clearly tell inspectors much of note, but the quality of our young people, the richness of our extra-curricular life and the breadth of our curriculum provision all come together to illustrate just how much there is for us to be pleased about. This new-look edition of our Success magazine has been produced entirely ‘in-house’ and serves to remind us of the skills and qualities of all those involved so creatively in so many aspects of life at UCC. I’m hugely grateful to all who have contributed to this new-style publication. Mr Pattinson

BRANCH OUT WITH BOOKS is a home-grown reading competition run at UCC. In the Summer Term, 120 pupils from across the school “branched out” and expanded their reading choices. Categories included ‘Classics of Today and Tomorrow’, ‘Bafta and Oscar Nominated’ and ‘Diaries’. Some of the most popular were ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’, ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’, and ‘Never Let Me Go’. Prizes were awarded for the best review to Samantha Woodhouse and the best illustration to Marieke Evans, with Joe Currie winning the Grand Prize, all sponsored and awarded by the Post Office. We look forward to Branch Out 2012, which begins in March. Ruth Molloy and Rachael de la Mare

DAISY PULLS IT OFF On Friday 8th July, the Drama Department performed Daisy Pulls it Off by Denise Deegan, a parody of life in an English boarding school for girls set in the 1920s. The curtains opened to reveal the Sixth Form cast in pinafores and straw hats. Sophie Mossop led the cast of sixteen as the character of Daisy Meredith. Other key players were Chris Brown as Sybil and Bill Sutton as Monica, who stole the show in their roles as Daisy’s adversaries at Grangewood Girls’ School. Ted Harbot demonstrated once more his talent for accents in his role as Mr Scoblowski, the ‘enigmatic Russian music teacher’. All the male members of the cast donned a variety of wigs and skirts to multi-role as members of the rival school’s hockey team in an unforgettable scene against the girls. We are once again indebted to Owen Smith and Joe James for producing a fantastic set at only two weeks’ notice. This was former Head of Department Susie Shreeve’s last performance at UCC after directing many outstanding productions during her five years at the school. This was also the final performance for many of the cast as we say goodbye to a very special year group and wish them well for the future. Jane Reardon

NATIONAL POETRY DAY WITH MIKE GARRY

Year 7 students were lucky enough to celebrate National Poetry day with award-winning performance poet Mike Garry. His impressive CV ranges from performances on Radio 4 and BBC2. In addition, using his collaboration with Alex Ferguson he was able to link poetry with this year’s National Poetry Day theme of “games”. Year 7 enjoyed an interactive morning of humorous rhythmic poetry performances from Mike, who enthralled the students with his infectious passion for poetry. The afternoon performance session showcased the Year 7s’ enormous talent for dub performance poetry with fun X-Factor style judging from Mike. The judging panel declared the winners were Apocalypse: Matthew Dalton, Jonathan Grierson and Samuel Walker. To watch the X-Factor performances from our Year 7s and see our Sounds of the Beacon interview with Mike, visit our website at www.ullswatercc.co.uk. Michelle Lewin

TRIPS UPDATE Once again, UCC students had the opportunity to visit TANZANIA in July. The main purpose of the visit was to work with children in an orphanage and secondary school, as well as to experience some of the wonderful Tanzanian culture. The students visited Nianjema Secondary School and the Bethsaida Orphanage, which provided a great first-hand experience of education in Tanzania. UCC staff and students provided workshops on GPS training, drama exercises, tree planting, English and food technology. Students then continued their exciting journey by going on safari and visiting the exotic island of Zanzibar. The students all had a fantastic learning experience on their trip to Tanzania and all said they would love to return again to this wonderful country. Gill Rutherford Also in July, the then Year 7 and 8s enjoyed a trip to LA ROCHELLE, FRANCE. They visited museums and took part in the glory of Bastille Day, as well as sampling the delights of French food, including ice cream!
