HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME Welcome to the summer 2016 edition of our fantastic news magazine sUCCess produced – as ever – by our hugely talented LRC team of Michelle Lewin, Rachael de la Mare and Lucian Toma with the co-operation of 200 UCC employees and 1400 pupils. There is always huge demand from staff for space in this magazine because there’s so much going on at UCC and with only 32 pages available a lot of events fail to get any column inches each term. This term, of course, we have an enormous amount to celebrate: the visit by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales in March, the success of our cheerleaders in the National Championships, yet another breath-taking Art Exhibition, a splendid Design Technology photoshoot, a variety of science events, visiting speakers, UCC’s Got Talent, expeditions for the Gold and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards and exchange visits to France. All of this on top of A-level and GCSE examinations, the Sixth Form Ball and Year 11 prom and 3 weeks of internal examinations. This has been another superb term at this vibrant school and we are looking forward to a great summer with new records about to be set on GCSE and A level results days. Mr Pattinson, Headteacher

Pablo Picasso once said, ‘Action is the foundational key to all success’; our students certainly live up to his ideal. This year’s sixth form exhibition is exceptional, illustrating just how engaged, conscientious, skilful and hard working our students are. We wish them well in their further studies and entrust the continuing survival of the arts to their capable hands. Owen Smith

More than 400 pupils from 27 local primary schools took part in this year’s primary science days, the purpose of which was to introduce the scientific skills and equipment that pupils will use in secondary school. The activities they needed to complete were dressed up in a real-life scenario – an expedition by an astronaut (an egg!) to an alien planet! The pupils displayed some impressive teamwork skills as they designed parachutes to land their astronauts (eggs) safely and to extract the DNA from an alien fruit (strawberries). They all received a booklet and a ‘thank you’ certificate for taking part; the winning groups were awarded a certificate. Alex Ford

FRENCH EXCHANGE Ten of UCC’s finest linguists spent Easter in France on the return exchange visit to Redon. We spent a week experiencing French life to the full – days of lessons at the lycée and visits to the magnificent city of Nantes and the seaside town of Vannes. After long days of classes and visits, we recovered our energies with some local delicacies: galettes, caramel and kouign amann. Chris Pattinson
