fact file - James Tweedie, former Ulswater CC student, now studying for an MPhil in Mathematics at Oxford University. I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO: Make sure I really enjoyed university; I did plenty of research to decide whether Oxford was right for me before I applied. The combination of working at the highest academic level, and the fantastic range of opportunities on offer outside my studies, made me sure it was the place for me. NOW I’M: Concentrating on the specialist areas of study I enjoy the most, and being taught by some of the greatest experts in the field. Between times, I’m squeezing in as many activities as possible — everything from getting involved in a variety of different sports, to volunteering for local charities. HOW I’M DOING: My Masters degree’s going to give me a huge range of job options in the future, so I’ll be able to choose my own direction. At present, I’m particularly interested in working for a voluntary organisation once I’ve completed my studies.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a worldfamous university? Play in the Cup final at Wembley? Publish a novel? Design a sports car? Go into space? All the famous footballers, writers, designers and astronauts who have achieved those things started out in the same way – with a dream. At Ullswater Community College, we believe that a dream is the most important thing you can have; it spurs you on to work hard, believe in your own abilities and never give up on your ambition. Our job is to give you every possible ounce of knowledge, support and guidance as you aim for that goal. In particular, we want to make you realise that you are a capable, gifted and unique human being who can achieve more than you ever thought possible – from your transition into the big, wide world of secondary school, until the time you leave for the big, wide world outside. Start here, and you could end up anywhere…

Believe... The world is starting to recognise that students who are able to study subjects that really interest them are happier, more motivated, get better results and are more likely to be able, enthusiastic employees in the future. Our curriculum offers more than 60 courses at GCSE and post-16 levels, allowing you to select subject combinations that appeal the most to you, so that you’re eager to learn and keen to progress.
fact file - MICHAEL HUNTER I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO: Study subjects that allow me to further my interest in cars and mechanics in general. I also wanted to make sure that I wasn’t just stuck in a classroom — I wanted practical experience to go alongside my studies. NOW I’M: Studying a Young Apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle Studies, alongside BTEC Engineering. I’m also doing a work placement at a local garage, Noble’s of Langwathby. HOW I’M DOING: I’ve really enjoyed my courses. Next year I’ll be taking up an apprenticeship with DW Toppin, an agricultural engineering contractor near Penrith.
Learning you
Alongside a strong range of GCSE and A-level options, we are at the forefront of developing other learning routes for students. We offer National Diplomas, combining practical work-related learning with qualifications, in Business, Admin and Finance, and Retail, as well as Young Apprenticeship routes. Whether your heart’s set on going to university, on a particular trade requiring specialist training, or simply on a good education that will set you up for whatever you end up choosing to do, Ullswater Community College can give you the knowledge and skills you’ll need.

Believe... fact file - Daniel Harding, owner of Angel Lane Fish and Chip Shop and former Ullswater CC student (1999-2006) I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO: Make the most of my opportunities. I’ve been working at Scotts since I was 15, and when it came up for sale, my dad and I went into partnership to buy the business. I took some training courses and completely refurbished the shop — my main aim was to make sure I was providing a top-quality product. NOW I’M: The winner of the National Young Fish Frier of the Year Award. As well as some written exams and an interview, four judges came to do a full-day inspection of the shop, looking at all aspects from the food to our service for customers. I was runner-up last year, so to win feels really good — and trade’s increased by a huge amount. HOW I’M DOING: I’ve just bought my second fish and chip shop, and I’ve trained my dad to ‘fry’ to my standards! The future’s looking bright and I’m hoping to continue expanding the business.

We’re not called Ullswater Community College for nothing – we recognise the crucial role that our town, our supporters and our surroundings play in how well we’re able to educate students. With this in mind, we not only work to support and encourage everyone in the community, but also to give something back to our environment wherever possible. Our location in an area of outstanding natural beauty means we’re particularly concerned about husbanding the environment, with an eco-garden and an extensive recycling programme to our credit. Students find the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award a joy to complete — not only do they have stunning surroundings in which to conduct expeditions, but a variety of public service organisations to which they can make a real contribution. We also want students to realise that the world doesn’t stop at the outskirts of Penrith — the same responsibilities they have to those around them extend to the entire planet. Our Enterprise specialism lends itself perfectly to initiatives such as Fairtrade, as well as a wide-ranging and active programme of fundraising activities.

It might sound funny, but a huge amount of what you’ll learn at Ullswater Community College isn’t absorbed in the classroom. Because we know everybody has different hobbies and interests, we make sure that you’re able to pursue them – whatever they happen to be. Our big campus is a real asset when it comes to extra-curricular provision. We’ve got excellent playing fields, facilities for every kind of sport imaginable, multiple performing arts studios and music rooms, and a huge range of different activities to fill them. We’re also aware that 21st-century society is a global one, so we work in partnership with schools around the world to share experiences and cultures. Our students have played sport in South Africa, seen teaching in action in Tanzania, and even learned from schools in Japan and Taiwan — they’ve got access to the kind of life experiences that will stay with them far past their school days.

fact file - ADAM COLLIN, CARLISLE UNITED GOALKEEPER AND FORMER ULLSWATER CC STUDENT (1997-2001) I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO: Play football! I was spotted by a Blackburn Rovers scout when I was 11, and played for Newcastle United’s youth team before leaving school as well. NOW I’M: A professional player for Carlisle; the day I signed the form was one of the highlights of my career. The greatest moment so far has to be playing in the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley Stadium. Walking onto the pitch and feeling that final-day atmosphere is every football player’s dream. HOW I’M DOING: I’ve got a contract with Carlisle for another two years, and I’m looking forward to the future. I want to play as long as I can, and I’ve got ambitions to rise even higher in the game.

I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO: Make sure students realise the value of getting out of school and seeing a real working environment. My own work experience during my school years increased my self-confidence, and motivated me to achieve good grades so I could pursue my chosen career. NOW I’M: Working with students on communityrelated projects covering housing issues in our area. We also offer work placements, and have some big plans to get involved in joint projects that will allow students to provide their own services to the community. HOW I’M DOING: From my point of view, it’s great to feel I’m playing such an active part in the community, and that I’ve got a say in helping to improve things for everyone. For the students, I think we’re helping them develop skills that’ll stay with them for life; communication, teamwork, problem-solving — the kind of things that are important no matter what job they go on to do.
To be ‘enterprising’ is to be bold in your thinking, confident of your own abilities, enthusiastic about your ideas and skilled in carrying them out. We chose to become a specialist Business and Enterprise College because we want every one of our students to develop these qualities – ones that will give them the best possible chance of success.
With this in mind, we’ll encourage you to start thinking in an enterprising way as early as possible, beginning with a residential introduction in Year 7 and following this with whole-year group activities that give an excellent grounding in thinking along business lines. Perhaps the most important element of our specialism is that it allows you a glimpse into how the real world functions as you learn. Our partnerships with a wide variety of local and national companies, from bakers to builders and banks, allow you to gain that elusive ‘experience’ that bridges the gap between qualifications and employment.
