Introduction Use this revision guide to plan your revision in the run up to your exams. For revision to be effective, you need to structure your time to ensure that you maximise the opportunities that you have to revise. Together with the support of your teachers and UCC’s tailor-made website, this revision planner will go a long way towards helping you to achieve the exam results you deserve.
Organising your revision
Make your revision plan as early as possible.
Divide your revision into manageable chunks.
Prioritise your revision.
Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses.
Create a revision space that is good for you e.g. your bedroom.
Resources
Subject revision outlines are available on the UCC revision website along with downloadable resources and links to useful web pages.
In some cases, the school shop stocks revision books, whilst others may be available from online outlets such as Amazon.co.uk.
In addition to work completed in class and at home, your teachers may well provide you with more detailed unit outlines, checklists and revision notes, especially if these are not available elsewhere.
Tips for revision
Use mornings for heavy revision, afternoons for lighter revision and evenings to go over things again or to test yourself.
Give a bit more time to your weaker topics.
Repetition - We learn through a mix of seeing (diagrams, videos, and symbols), hearing (discussing, teaching, recording) and doing (making, showing, acting out). The more times you do of each, the more you will remember!
Mind maps and revision cards – strip your notes down to key points, terms and simple diagrams, whatever suits the subject and topic.
Mnemonics and association – link key words and information to the letters of a memorable word or phrase, a familiar place, image, body parts, tunes, objects or even shapes, colours or numbers.

Work with friends and family – go through things together, listen to each other, teach each other, make and share videos and podcasts. Quizzes, practice questions / papers and model answers – test yourself, mark and weigh up your strengths, identify and address your weaknesses, understand how to write a good answer.
Further guidance and revision resources can be found on subject curriculum pages on the school website. For detailed guidance, links and downloadable resources, please go to:

Coping with Stress There are lots of ways to reduce stress:
Talk about it – Your listeners can be friends, family, teachers or others. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of maturity and strength.
Daily relaxation – Make sure you spend some time each day doing things that relax you and take your mind off your studies.
Exercise – Exercise is a great way to clear the mind and relaxes your muscles.
Positive thinking – Thinking you may fail makes you worry more and makes you less enthusiastic about working hard.
Eat and drink well – Eating the right foods will reduce overall stress and make you feel good about yourself. Avoid things with added sugar and try to eat a balanced diet with enough protein and savoury carbohydrates. E.g. eggs, yoghurt, fruit, veg, rice, potatoes, fish.
Breathing techniques – Breathing techniques can help you relax. Sit comfortable and close your eyes. Breathe slowly through your nose and count to ten. Hold this breath while you count to ten again. Now breath out slowly, counting to ten once more. Repeat this.
Sleep – Get plenty of rest. Sleep affects concentration so if you have enough sleep, you won’t have to struggle so hard to focus.

Helping your child with revision What is revision? Revision is about looking back over work that has been done to:
remind you of things that you might have forgotten.
make links to other bits of learning so that you can see "the bigger picture".
reinforce learning so it stays remembered.
highlight what you don't know.
check that everything is understood.
Why should I encourage my child to revise? 1) It will help decrease their stress levels. Being in control and confident will reduce panic. 2) It can help them identify the areas that they need to work on. 3) It means that when they sit the exam, the result is a reflection of what they can do, not what they didn't bother to do.
Where and when to start 1) Work out how much time they have - be realistic. 2) Take into account the time of day that they work best - when are they likely to revise? 3) Break the revision down so that it is manageable. "Revising for GCSEs" sounds like a huge amount of work. "Revising a case study for an ageing population" sounds more manageable. 4) Use a revision planner. This will help organise time for revision at home and school.
Should I help with revision? Research and experience shows that children whose parents/carers take the opportunity to be frequently interested in their child’s learning make most progress. Revision should be used to fix the learning beyond the classroom. It can provide the opportunity for learners to reflect on their understanding and extend skills and knowledge in a particular area. You will also get to know your child’s particular strengths and difficulties and find out what they are studying. Helping your children with their work is not the same as doing it for them; discussing their work with them strengthens their understanding.
LET THEM BE THE TEACHER: If you don't know anything about what they are learning in Physics, ask them to teach you! 44

Tips for the best revision area
46
Yr11 Revision Planner
Helping make revision stress free ● Be positive about your child’s attempts. Make an appointment with school if you are concerned about their progress. ● It’s a good idea if your child has a break and something to eat before starting revision. ● Be patient! Help your child to become an independent learner. Explain how to look up information or find a word in a dictionary rather than simply giving them the answer in order to get the task finished. ● Don’t let working together become a chore. Make it a special time that you can both enjoy. ● Turn off the television while revision is underway, but do let your child work to music if they find it helpful. ● Agree a place and a time for help - listening while you do another chore can work too. ● It doesn’t need to be a marathon session; little and often is usually best. ● Recognise your own emotional state - if you are tense or worrying about something else, it might not be a good time to work with your child. ● Don’t be afraid to STOP if it isn’t going well. Try to agree what the difficulty is and when to come back together later. ● ALWAYS end with praise (they’ll feel good, you’ll feel good) It should be enjoyable… for both of you!
