2012 Outlook Expectations The ULM volleyball program gained traction in 2011 with a double-digit win season for the first time since 2005 and the ninth time in program history. Third year Head Coach Ernest Vasquez also guided the Warhawks to four Sun Belt victories, snapping a four season conference losing streak (0-81). “We want to continue to build on what we did last year and win more matches, but I think a coach can say that until (he/she) is undefeated,” Vasquez said. Goals The ULM Warhawks feature a high number of newcomers (five of 12 team members) that will see significant playing time this year, and Vasquez hinted that they will all be key pieces this season. “We have a lot of new girls coming in, so our first goal is to find a role. We don’t want to be one of those teams that has kids coming in that don’t contribute right away,” Vasquez said. “This will be the first year we have a full squad of players that have played at a really high level of experience, whether it’s in the countries they’re from or with their club teams. All the kids that are in here are going to have success. They have been exposed to high-level volleyball, and it will be fun to see where they can go,” he added Vasquez also shows the NCAA goals of the student-athlete, and since the volleyball team will be spending just as many hours in the classroom, he wants the team to build on last year’s academic success. “We’d like to have a team average 3.5 GPA,” he said. Returners and Newcomers The Warhawks return six student-athletes from 2011 including second team AllLousisana selection senior Zuzana Markova. Markova led the team with 300 kills and 463 assists while finishing third on the team with 250 digs. Sophomore Marcela Araya returns after leading the team with 351 digs in 2011. Araya picked up the first ever Sun Belt weekly honor for ULM when she was named Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3 and followed that up with a Co-Defensive Player of the Week honor a week later. Another key offensive cog, senior Samantha Morse, is back after finishing second on the team with 289 kills and leading the team with her .231 hitting percentage. Junior Blanca Ocana is back after she collected 236 kills, 106 digs and 46 totals blocks in 2011. Senior Tetiana Sukach returns after leading the team with 30 service aces and finishing second on the team with 255 digs. Also returning to the squad will be sophomore Alannah Cullum who saw action in all 26 matches last season and led all returners and was second overall on the team with 84 total blocks. Junior Iren Marinova will rejoin the team after sitting out the 2011 season. She had a successful freshman campaign, averaging 1.01 kills/set. Nearly half of the roster will be newcomers. Four (Katie Harrington, Madison Martin, Hazel Perrens, and Sarah Tatarko) will be incoming freshmen with high school and international club experience. Maria Garcia is the lone JUCO transfer as she joins the Warhawks after two seasons at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Arizona.

Ernest Vasquez Head Coach / Third Season

The Vasquez File Collegiate Experience ULM Head Coach (2010-Present) Third Season / 10-41 Kent State Assistant Coach (2008-09) Virginia Commonwealth Assistant Coach (2007) Director of Operations (2006) Arizona Western Assistant Coach (2005) Phoenix College Assistant Coach (1999-04) Ernest Vasquez enters his third season at the helm of the ULM volleyball program as he continues to guide a young team. Despite the Warhawks’ struggles in his first season, Vasquez has already had a huge impact on the program with his knowledge of the game and skilled recruiting. In just his second season leading the ULM program, he helped the Warhawks record the most victories (10) since 2005 and first conference victory since 2006. ULM started the season 3-0 and had a winning record until Oct. 16. The Warhawks were 6-6 at home and 5-4 in five-set matches. Vasquez also helped ULM receive its first ever Sun Belt weekly honor as Marcela Araya was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3, 2011. Araya followed with a Co-Defensive Player of the Week honor on Oct. 10. Also on Oct. 10, Zuzana Markova was named an honorable mention for the AVSR Global Player of the Week. Markova picked up second team All-Louisiana honors following a season where she led the team in kills and assists. In just his first season as head coach, Vasquez turned around the team’s performance in the classroom, raising the cumulative GPA from 2.5 in 2009 to 3.5 in 2011. The volleyball team was also one of just two ULM programs to have 100 percent of its players receive academic honors from the Sun Belt Conference, including nine of 12 members being named to the Commissioner’s List, which requires a minimum 3.5 GPA. Vasquez took over the program after two seasons as an assistant coach at Kent State. Under his guidance, three Kent State players earned All-Mid American Conference honors, while five players earned academic all-conference distinction. Prior to joining the KSU staff, he spent two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2006, he served as the director of operations and handled various administrative duties, including travel arrangements, budgeting and scheduling. The Rams promoted Vasquez to an assistant coach prior to the 2007 season. He joined the VCU staff after spending the 2005 season as an assistant coach at Arizona Western College. The Matadors were one of the top teams in the country during his one-year stint as they reached as high as third in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national rankings. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach for five seasons at Phoenix College (1999-2004). Vasquez led the Bears to a third-place finish at the 1999 Junior College Division II National Tournament and coached 12 all-region players. Vasquez earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art from Arizona State in 2003 and received an associate’s degree in massage therapy from Arizona Western in 2006.

BJ Trame Assistant Coach / First Season

ULM volleyball head coach Ernest Vasquez announced the addition of BJ Trame to the Warhawks staff as an assistant coach last May. “BJ is the kind of coach I’ve wanted for a long time now,” said Vasquez. “He brings a lot of Division I experience after working for two very well-established programs under respected head coaches.” Trame spent his past three seasons as an assistant coach for Illinois State, where his primary duty was serving as the recruiting coordinator. His ability for finding quality talent has proven itself as the Redbirds finished third at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament the past two seasons. During his tenure, he helped coach two MVAC first team selections and one second team selection, as well as three freshman team picks and six scholar-athletes. Another player was also chosen for the USA Volleyball A2 program. “The benefit of having such a seasoned assistant coach is it’s only going to increase the level of success we have started on the road toward these past two years,” said Vasquez. “Now that our team has begun to show its potential, we have been able to attract the kind of talent and knowledge BJ has to offer.” Trame has been a member of a championship winning staff after he began his collegiate coaching career at Miami University in 2006. As a graduate assistant coach, he helped guide the RedHawks to a Mid-American Conference Championship in 2007. During his time at Miami, where he received his undergraduate education, Trame also coached the women’s club team. He worked with the program for two seasons, first as an assistant coach for the 2005-06 season before moving up to head coach in 2006-07. He was also a player on the men’s club team from 2003-06. He spent a season at the University of Findlay between his jobs at Miami and Illinois State where he performed a variety of roles as the interim assistant coach for the Oilers. Not a stranger to winning national championships, Trame also secured a title as a club volleyball coach. As head coach for the Ohio Valley Performance Region his team won the 2007 USA Volleyball High Performance Championship. He also coached the Borderline junior volleyball club team during the same tenure, which spanned from 2002-08. Trame earned two bachelor’s degrees from Miami in history and sports studies with a minor in coaching. His master’s degree is in sports behavior and performance with an emphasis on sports psychology.

The Edwards Sisters ULM’s Great Volleyball Stars

JaNel and Lynn Edwards, sisters who played at ULM in the 1980’s, were among the University’s great volleyball stars. JaNel, the oldest, came to ULM from a junior college and was first team All-Southland Conference for two years, 1984 and 1985. Lynn played for four years with the Warhawks and was one of the few athletes to make the all-conference squad all four years, making the second team in 1985 and 1986 and the first team in 1987 and 1988. Lynn also made the AVCA AllSouthwest Region team her final two seasons.
