L-NU commemorates its Founders in the Golden Anniversary Opening
| NIÑO FLORES
In honor of the hard work that L-NU’s founders, Dr. Francisco Q. Duque and Mrs. Florencia T. Duque, poured into establishing the university, L-NU formally opens its 50th Foundation Celebration on February 22, 2019 at Salvador T. Duque Fieldhouse. University President, Dr. Luz T. Duque-Hammershaimb, commenced the opening and stated that she can feel the enthusiasm of the
students and it is amazing. She asked for a moment of silence to commemorate the Founders and to celebrate all the years that sustained this institution. “We cannot walk alone. And as we walk together, we must take a pledge we can’t turn back. Let us find peace,” she says to end her speech. “And together, walk into our own shining future.” Afterwards, it was followed by a countdown that officially signaled the
opening. Various guests also came to celebrate with LNU including Dagupan City Mayor, Belen T. Fernandez. “They say it is always a great feeling to be at home,” she said. According to her, this is no ordinary school celebration but this is also a celebration for Dagupan City, which has rightfully served and earned the recognition as center of education because of the solid contributions of the uni-
versity. “With all honesty, I can’t imagine Dagupan City inspiring storylines today without ever mentioning LNU”, she added. The Honorable mayor also mentioned that the story of LNU is the story of courage and vision. It is the story of humble beginnings. It is a story that inspires. Finally, it is a story that is worthy of telling to future generations. The event ended with Filipino-themed festival performances of the

Duque Fieldhouse. Head of L-NU Guidance Center, Mrs. Grace Salvador-Fontanilla commenced the event. It was followed by a short reminder from the Vice President for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations, Dr. Eugene M. Reyes. Two speakers were invited for the career fair. The first speaker is a Human Resource Manager at Wireless Link, Inc., Mr. Jhayr Marcos Canda. Mr. Canda began his talk with a simple yet interactive ac-
tivity for him to grab his audiences’ attention. He also shared about his early experiences when starting to be a human resource manager, the tips about planning ahead as possible, and emphasizes how the students will learn where they will go after they graduated. “To unlock your potential, it’s not about your strength, it’s not about your intelligence but it’s about continuous effort,” he said, noting that it is continuous knowing thyself, learning where you will go, and believing what you can do. The highlight of his talk is about making a brand to market yourself in the future and choosing the right company suitable for you as an employee. “A job search re-
quires mental and emotional clarity and energy,” he said. “No matter how many times you’ve failed, it doesn’t mean you give up. Failures are part of success.” Mr. Canda ended his talk saying, “I hope when you graduated, you’ll ask yourself, the things that you do are for what and for whom?” In the afternoon, the second guest speaker was L-NU’s Human Resource Manager, Mrs. Pamela Duque-Villaflor. She talked about the things to do during job applications and the perspective of an employer toward applicants. She also shared some of her experiences as the Human Resource Manager of L-NU as well as the tips the applicants should do and avoid.

UNFILTERED Blind Art

As a fan of boudoir photography and an aspiring noob photographer- it’s one of my dreams to shot in such style someday. A human body is a unique art subject, especially in its purest form. Everybody has different curves, shapes, different shades and hues, beauty marks, scars, stretchmarks and etc. But let’s get to the point, in a recent post of Chad Tinio, a notorious Taiwanese boudoir photographer, he shared his art concept; ‘GAHASA: Rape is Art’ in social media that started in 2017 and resurfaced again this 2019 has gained massive attention. As I read his post, my stomach churns with disgust. There’s no point in looking further more in his point of view as rape and sexual harassment as a joke or an art per se, it comes out as an insensitive disgusting piece of trash. I

The Degree of College Degree “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” A statement by Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa. I know, a lot of us do agree into what he said. From the ancient civilizations of Egypt who developed the writing systems, up to this generation, in which education seems like not just a privilege but a requirement and it does define a person’s capabilities, it is indeed the most powerful weapon, proven a long time ago. But let me ask a question, what if a state will be ruled by a person who didn’t get a formal education? Most of you might say that everything would be in chaos.
get that his main photographic style is boudoir and I made a further research about his works and personally I find it artfully erotic. Don’t get me wrong though, his concept is still deranged and outrageous. Another thing is, he got a consent from a minor to be his ‘subject’, that she shall not worry as he will be ‘gentle’ with a dash of smiley and evil smile emojis. Pervertic much? Yikes. His concept is controversial and he got that balls to do it unlike any other artist out there. Still, he shouldn’t have taken it lightly. Little did he know, he is actually eradicating the art world- especially the photography community. There is freedom in art, but bare in mind that limits still exist. And it is one of the worst crimes for Hades’ sake! An act that can and had ruin one’s life negatively. And that dear friends, it can happen regardless of age, clothing, gender, situation, place, and time. It is not a kink that can be fetishize over. It is not a joke for entertainment, definitely it is not an act of love too. Also, it is not one of the signs of showing dominance, it is unethical and morally wrong. Don’t glorify people’s pain and trauma for aesthetics. Stop romanticizing as it affects people in all aspects. Seriously, don’t pursue art blindly for the sake of it and forgetting the rights and welfare of the people who we work with. Rape is not an art and it will never be.
In the Philippines, according to the 1987 Philippine Constitution Article VII, a person can be a president if he/she is a natural born Filipino, a registered voter, 40 years of age at the day of the election, have resided in the Philippines 10 years before the election is held, and lastly, able to read and write. During our Philippine Government class, our professor was discussing about Article VII and he mentioned that he’s a bit skeptic about the “must be able to read and write” qualification, which led me into contemplating that this one might be irrational. Let’s say that it is the right of every Filipino and it is a way to give them fair chances. I get that point, but folks, we’re talking about running a whole state. You can’t just sit there and expect everything to be alright. You can sense a bit of hypocrisy here, but how can someone without proper knowledge and training can run a country? It’s not being undemocratic neither to discriminate, it is being logical. But it is impossible that this section of the Article VII will be revamped. Boundless time is needed before making it work. At the end of the day, people are liable of the future of this country. We just need to make our votes worthy. So vote wisely.

You have made it thus far. Congratulations. Decide on whether to cry, or to laugh, or do both. Your struggles certainly have paid off as much as you are to be given credit for surviving. Your success has paid off on your tears, your blood, and your torment. But the end is not yet here. No, the worst is yet to come; more and more hardships, more trials, more suffering and frustra-
tions. What you have experienced is nothing compared to the onslaught that shall engulf you whole. It shall swallow you completely until you learn how to swim, or to drown. Experience is the best teacher. But you’ll survive, will you not? You have made it thus far, after all. Adapt. Overcome. Survive. Do not allow others to dictate what your capabilities are. Do not allow others to ruin what you have at this point built up for yourself. Are you afraid? Foolish is the one who is not. Pain awaits, after all. Unless you relish pain. Step outside. Go on. See the beauty in the destruction that is the world. Behold the order within the chaos, the destruction singing with the peace, the everything and nothing that makes up the life of man. Listen
to the song, strain your ears for it, and dance its rhythm, whether it may be as haphazard as the erratic beatings of a wild heart, or the graceful sways of an air-borne feather. Search for your antithesis, engage with a dichotomous soul that shall balance yours. Do away with the burdens of your life. Do not be afraid to let go. The world? Is not yours. But you may turn it into your maze. Understand the intricacies that lend you the false sense of control. Surrender to the blind turns that may catch you off-guard, oh-so-very off-guard to the point of blind panic. Navigate through the hallways illuminated by a dim, flickering light. Do not allow that light to extinguish, for that is your only salvation. Lose it, and you may lose yourself. Goodbye. We hope for your return.

The Marigold There was once a seed. The sun shined down on it, and the heavens gave it water. The earth provided it with nourishment until the seed grew into a plant, and into a flower. The flower had bright orange petals. It was not the prettiest of flowers, and the flower knew that. The flower had once seen a most wondrous flower, held by a most beautiful being. The being was a woman, and the flower learned about aesthetics. “I wish to be beautiful,’ declared the flower. So it grew arms and legs, and dug itself up from the soil. The little flower chanced upon an owl (Such a curious sight! An owl awake during the day. Surely it meant good tidings for the flower?). Knowing of the wisdom this bird had, the flower inquired, “How may I find beauty, so that I may take it for myself?” “Aye, beauty is everywhere, dear flower. One must only learn to appreciate it,” responded the owl. “Pah!” cried the flower. “Lies. I have seen beauty, and wish to acquire it.” So the flower left the owl and continued its search until it came upon a crow. “Good day, ebony creature. Where may I chance upon beauty? I wish to acquire it for myself.” “Aye, innocent little flower! If it is beauty you seek, then search for it among men, for they create for their selves all manners of beauty, pitiful as their race may be,” responded the crow. “Why, much thanks! Indeed, you are wiser than the foolish owl.” So the flower sent out to search for humans, remembering what it had seen once before, for the flower was gullible and headstrong, wishing only to hear what it wanted to hear. For a time did the flower trudge along under the elements. Finally did it happen upon man. The little flower was ecstatic. Here, finally, will it learn the secret to beauty and allow its soul to rest. The flower waved around among the humans. It raised its voice, but they cannot hear what the flower wished to say. “Man certainly is deaf to everything but his own voice,” mused the flower. Giving up, temporarily, at least, on its task to communicate with man, the flower settled for observation. “They most certainly are amusing creatures,” observed the flower. “They create pleasures for their selves at the cost of pain. Is this how they acquire beauty?” Further did the little flower watch. Amusement turned into alarm, alarm turned into horror, and horror turned into revulsion. The flower could not understand men. Why is it that such greedy creatures exist? Why is it that such complex creatures continue to thrive even at the cost of life? What is it about these base beings destroying all that is within and without the soul? Love, joy, peace, all these were corrupted and defiled. Contentment was nowhere to be seen. The flower continued to watch as man struggled with his life, toiling away into nothingness. The flower longed for its simple life embraced within the caring confines of the earth, beauty be damned!

literary 9 LARAWANG KUPAS By PAKO LOH
Kahibangan man, subalit nangangarap na makapiling kang muli.

Primes flatten Crusaders, retain championship | JANMERL CARLO PORTIN The Engineering Primes successfully defended their title as they were able to beat the Medicine Crusaders in the Volleyball Men’s Division Championship last February 28, 2019, during the celebration of Intramurals co-celebrated with the 50th founding anniversary of Lyceum Northwestern University. It took a lot of effort from the Primes to fi-
nally put away the Crusaders, as they were pushed to their limits at every set. The game was very exciting at every turn as fans go crazy every exchange both teams makes getting the crowd in a frenzy. Christian Rico was instrumental in the Engineering Primes’ victory as he was the main offensive threat that his team has displaying his full arsenal of offensive skills from the
eliminations up until the finals which resulted to him winning the best spiker award, while his teammate Heejohn Lim was a maestro in setting up his teammates and helped make the flow of the offense better, proving that having a good playmaker results to superior offense. Aswin has been a catalyst for the Crusaders from the elimination up to the finals as he was able to show his
Decoders dethrone Cheftastics, claim basketball gold | JANMERL CARLO PORTIN CICS completed their epic run by stunning the defending champion CHM, 66-64 to repossess the elusive trophy in a basketball tournament between colleges during the Intramurals held at the Salvador T. Duque Field house last February 28, 2019, in line with the 50th founding celebration of Lyceum Northwestern University. Tied at 64 with 10 seconds remaining in the game, Aquino converted two clutch free-throws to ice the game after being fouled by Apostol on the final seconds of the 4th quarter which decided the outcome of the game. The whole game was a seesaw affair with both teams exchanging buckets like heavyweights exchanging blows in a ring. Both teams were able to display not just their offensive side of the game but they also showed their versatility defensively be-
ing able to make big defensive stops that helped make the game a nail biter. CICS Decoders managed to place 2nd in the bracket D after having a record of 2-1 only losing to the Engineering Primes in the elimination round. This saw them pitted against the juggernaut Maritime Tridents who have a twice to beat advantage after sweeping the bracket B of the eliminations, but the CICS Decoders did the unthinkable and beat Maritime twice, both with a convincing win to secure a semifinal match against the Criminology Defenders which they also won and helped them book a finals showdown against the defending champion CHM Cheftastics who on the other hand did not have a hard time during the previous round by sweeping through the eliminations, before defeating the Architecture Regals in the quarterfinal round and the
Engineering Primes in the Semi-Final round. The Decoders’ run came up short last year but they got back and eventually crowned as the new champion, led by their two best players Ali Al-esry, who dominated the whole eliminations, quarterfinals and semi-finals which led to him winning the season MVP award, and Daryl Aquino, who won the Finals MVP award after stepping up his game at the biggest stage of the tournament. This year’s Mythical five comprises of Ali Al-esry and Daryl Aquino from the Decoders, Marc Jae Fernandez of the Cheftastics, Philander Bautista from the Defenders and Diether Camat from the Engineering Primes. The Decoders are looking forward to a repeat next Intramurals, knowing it will always be a tough road for a second straight title but they have what it takes to do so.
consistent defensive prowess, sending shots back to the attacker making life harder for the offensive players to score points against his team. Despite coming up short against the Primes, the Crusaders showed up and gave them a run for there money, as they were able to make the game as exciting as it could have ever been, going toe to toe against the eventual cham-
pions was an amazing feat for itself and the team deserves an appreciation for giving it their all. The Engineering Primes will be looking forward on making it a threepeat come next Intramurals, they will be looking to get even better as they know that the road to getting a three-peat will be very hard as the team will try to go at them harder comes next season.
Defenders demolish Philomathes, bag Women’s Volleyball Title | JANMERL CARLO PORTIN A showdown between two formidable teams ended with the Criminology Defenders being crowned as the new champion by dominating CTE Philomathes in a convincing fashion, sweeping the whole series, last February 28, 2019, during the Intramurals in relation to the 50th founding anniversary of Lyceum Northwestern University. The Defenders took control from the get go showing a combination of both scorching offense and suffocating defense not giving the opposing team a chance to gain momentum of the game, thus resulting to a 3-0 victory claiming the championship in the process. Ly Ann Lazo has been the best offensive player for the Defenders throughout the whole tournament showing a wide array of offensive skills instilling fear to op-
posing defense as she was scoring not only from service aces but also from spikes which resulted to her winning the best Spiker award, Jennelyn Bautista was a great complementary player to Lazo as she was instrumental in setting the attacks for her team. Jinrisha Balgos showed that the Defenders will live up to its moniker as she showed that she was the best defender by blocking shots back to every attacker who would dare go up and challenged her, this results to her winning the best blocker award. In spite of the loss, CTE Philomethes were a very good team from the start of the Intramurals they were a very dominating team beating every opposition. Before heading to the finals, the Philomethes faceoff against the CBE Business Tycoons.
