FollowingtheUKGovernment’s introductionof theNIProtocolBill,inwhichitwishestomake amendmentstotheProtocolwithouttheEU, some relationshipshavetaken a turn. ButaccordingtoDrAnthonySoares,director oftheCentre forCrossBorderStudies,things are onlygettingstartedwiththeNIProtocol. Hesaysanychangesshouldbedonebetween theUKandEU,thatthenorth-southissue isn’t fxed,issuesnow remaininareassuchas insuranceand recognitionofqualifcationsand thatNorthern Irelandcould“becomeisolated” intermsofconnectionsand relationswithboth theRepublicandGB.

Theorganisationwassetupin1999inthe wakeoftheGoodFridayAgreement a year earliertosupportandpromotebettercooperationbetweenthejurisdictions,northand south. “We alsosupportandadvocatebetween islandofIrelandandGB,andworkwithother organisationsacrossEurope,”DrSoaressaid.
“Ourpositionisnounilateralactionshouldbe taken,”hesays.“Solutionscanonlybefound throughjointagreementfromtheUKandEU, involvingstakeholdersfromNorthern Ireland andtheRepublicofIreland.
“Withthenewimmigrationpolicy, theyno longerhavefreedomofmovement.”
“Ithasbeenthecaseforyearsandthatwill onlycontinue,”hesays.“[Itwill]particularly acceleratewithcompaniesbasedinNorthern Irelandhavingaccesstothesinglemarket,and alsotheUK’s internalmarket.”
Turningtothesuccessofcross-border businesses,as a recentsurveyfrom InterTradeIrelandshowthosefrmssellingnorth andsouthwere twiceaslikelytobeingrowth mode,DrSoaressaysthat“precedesBrexitand theProtocol”.
“Intermsofthatelementofcross-border mobility, wehavestartedtoencounter diffculties relatedtothesouthern sideofthe border thosewhoare notIrishorUKcitizens.
Andwith18,000workersand5,200students crossingthebordereachday, DrSoaressays opennessis“essentialforbusinessesand workers”.

We hadpromisedthegirlsatleastonebeach day,butendeduphavingacouple.Our favouritewasthedayspentatafabulous beachnearRéville,closetotheportofSaintVaast. ThemainattractionforPeterandmyselfwas theclearwater,butforthegirlsitwasthe beachbar/restaurantLeGoéland.Thisisa verycoolshackperchedhighonthesand duneswithlivemusicatnightandthemost spectacularseaviews.
