were those without kids whose involvement in big public displays of Christmas, Hannukah or other forms of December spirit was almost surreptitious, especially when it came to visiting the grand traditional productions of the season. Then there were those who simply stuck close to home, seeing the parades and public outdoor festivities as a one-or-none proposition; you stayed close to home and didn’t chance catching your death of cold by going out to more than one, maybe two events in December. The Black Friday shopping events the day after Thanksgiving seem to have irreversibly changed all that. They have combined comfortably with the revived Main-Street dreams and coordinated events up and down the Hudson Valley. Supportive businesses understood the idea behind big, splashy, enlivening days and nights which drew added customers and filled communities with added pride. Eventually, all this activity, this hoopla, has brought out more than just families to December events. Involving the kids is now the problem, in fact. It’s sometimes easier to get adults out to events than to cajole or nag the kids away from their screens. A new crowd of folks has emerged who like jumping from event to event, community to community, in the extra-busy weeks starting around now. They’ll be hitting several winter walks and Santa arrivals in one day, and a good half-dozen or more in one holiday-full weekend. One can observe how each community’s distinctive and particularistic glue holds it together.

with quaint celebrations of an old set of holiday house tableaux in the city’s Seventh Street Park (where the train rumbles through twice a day), eventually swallowed the entire length of Warren Street, complete with fireworks, dancers, performance artists and even a sax-playing roving Santa. There have also been longstanding traditional holiday parades and celebrations in Saugerties and Poughkeepsie, Kingston and Phoenicia, for as long as many children now grandparents can remember now. We’ve raised our son Milo in Catskill these past eleven years. Santa arrives as part of a Parade of Lights on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 24 this year, much as he now shows up at the end of many Thanksgiving Day parades. The evening ends with a tree-lighting. It used to be a cold, sugar-fueled night when our boy was a proudly marching cub scout. The next evening, Saturday, November 25,

he following Friday evening, December 1, Pete Seeger’s good Sloop Clearwater opens up, again on the Rondout’s waterfront, for an annual holiday party that mixes history, food and plenty of cheering musicmaking. 6:30 on to the big fireworks (backdropped by the Walkway Over the Hudson) best seen from Waryas Park. A Holiday on Huguenot Street in New Paltz that weekend will mix history with old-style seasonal fun and yummy refreshments. Over in Ellenville, the now-annual Wawarsing Wassail gets under way with 17 days of packed-in events including stupendous lights, theater events (at Shadowland’s two stages now), a parade, and the offerings at local restaurants and businesses. Saturday, December 2 marks one of the bigger weekends for holiday cheer this year, especially given the “early” nature of the 2017 calendar. There will be an all-day Arlington holiday fest from noon through an evening parade on Raymond Avenue near Vassar College. Catskill also hosts afternoon events, including several art shows (including one at our own home). Sinterklaas starts that afternoon all over the village of Rhinebeck. Woodstock’s shopping gala open house, complete with plenty of community activities, kicks off at dark, as does Hudson’s giant winter walk, hosted by the old opera house recently renamed Hudson Hall, all ending in stupendous fireworks over the Hudson River at around 9 p.m. Sunday, December 3 is a fun day throughout the village of Saugerties, topped by one of the region’s better old-style Santa-dominated parades.

he following Thursday, December 7, is the fifth annual Made in Kingston crafts and locally-made goodies sale being held this year at The Metro, the former MetLife building at 2 South Prospect Street (on the corner of Greenkill Avenue, opposite the Boys and Girls Club), soon scheduled to become a regional film production hub and makerspace. It runs from 4 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, December 9 is when Phoenicia’s lovely Miracle On Main Street shows off that Catskills community’s talents and joie de vivre, with singing, theater, food and all sorts of imaginative fun from 5 to 8 p.m. It’s also the day for Rosendale’s annual Frozendale celebration all day long. Sunday, December 10 is when New Paltz hosts its annual winter fair outdoor marketplace, with plenty of kids’ entertainment at the Mountain Laurel Waldorf School at 16 South Chestnut Street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. And don’t forget the annual Hudson Valley Holistic Holiday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day at the Holiday Inn on Route 9 in Fishkill (next to I-84).

Nov. 23, 2017 Black Friday • Shop Local I used to go to these things because it was part of a reporter’s job. I discovered the romance of enduring traditions and felt the community pride at each and all of these events. Once, it was the kids who caused us to attend way too many such events each season. Now we go out because we love running into people all bundled up against the season, their breaths steaming with cocoa heat. In terms of their big public personas, these events have become a regional thing. Many people are now doing what I thought I and my family were doing alone: getting to all the events they can. That’s what I urge you to do, participate fully in the spirit of the region’s holiday season. great traditional dance performances of The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol at the Bardavon in Poughkeepsie or at UPAC in Kingston. There are other holiday theatrics by our various community troupes. Our family’s favorites including Ghent Playhouse’s annual Pantaloon spoofs in Columbia County, and whatever Woodstock Playhouse brings forth this time of year. And what, we must add, would a Hudson Valley holiday be without SUNY Ulster’s Tuba Christmas blast on December 13?

Stepping back from black Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday

W

hen Small Business Saturday was first observed seven Thanksgivings ago, it seemed like a perfect match for reviving the Hudson Valley’s main streets. Malls were still strong in the region, and online was just starting to pull huge swaths of local business. But new business endeavors were popping up in small towns and cities, quaint villages and rural byways. Local residents, new and old, were supportive. There was no attempt to swallow the business of bigger stores; they could still have their day. Better to give everyone an extra day and draw more customers on that Saturday after Thanksgiving when so many of the holiday season’s first big events roared into life. It felt like community, rather than commerce. The concept of Small Business Saturday followed the invention of the Cyber Monday concept

help to make Ulster County a great place to live and work.” For those more tied to the original idea behind Thanksgiving rather than the date’s initiation of each year’s big gift-buying time, there’s Giving Tuesdays, which started out five years ago as a form of hashtag activism. Activism moved from the streets to online social media sites, rebranding and restarting each holiday season in the spirit of giving rather than buying. Its main instigators at the outset had been the 92nd Street Y in New York City and the United Nations Foundation. Within a year over 7000 nonprofits were on board, and the press has been charting rising amounts of giving. After surviving Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, what makes one generous on Giving Tuesday? A lot depends on whether one’s giving is public or private, or whether one prefers giving national or local. — Paul Smart
