Welcome to the Historic 28th Annual Taste of New Paltz

W

ow, you guys! I am so excited we just got back from the Fairgrounds making our final layout decisions for the 28th Annual Taste of New Paltz. We’ve discovered that we’re the original Taste festival in the state, 28 years of great times. How’s that for awesome? Driving around town, I am starting to see the apples pop all over, and it has me thinking of leaves changing colors, warm sweaters, back to school and, for sure, apple pies. Can you believe I started this job less than two months ago and I am hosting our largest event of the year? I’m just the host. I’d like to thank the numerous committee members who volunteer their time and energy to make this event so much fun and such a success. (So, thank you, team and my staff at the Chamber.) New at the Taste this year we’ll be looking to your taste buds to tell us who you think is tops. There will be bragging rights galore. We are awarding Best of the Taste in three categories. Everyone will get to have a say! We are also having our very first Apple Pie Contest, bringing in some big-time apple experts as judges. Yummy, right? We’ll be pouring a wide variety of craft beers. And as a regional chamber of commerce we want to give our amazing community of businesses an opportunity to showcase what they have to offer. So don’t forget to check out our business showcase, arts and crafts vendors, and super-fun expanded kids’ area. I also want to thank you, the community, and friends from the region for coming out and celebrating all that is New Paltz! Dance around, snack on a churro, get your face painted (no age limit), chat

with friends, make some new ones, and most importantly just have fun. There is something for everyone. The day will fly by before your eyes. The magic of a region coming together to celebrate all that’s delicious is not like anything else. I feel lucky to be a part of it! Keep an eye out for the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce. We are on the move and have much more in store for this community. Your business is our business, and we fully support that creed. One final thank you. On behalf of the board of directors, the Chamber staff and me, cheers to our generous sponsors, without whom this day would not have been possible. Best, Jen

For the kids, too By Giada Labate he Taste of New Paltz. A unique celebration of a unique place. However, it’s all very … grown-up. This might be well and good for those poor teenagers who consider themselves aspiring adults, but what about things for us kids? Kids should have fun at social events, too!. (Arguably, kids should be having more fun than adults, but that’s beside the point.) And adults should be able to expect events where their kids can have fun by themselves. Have no fear, parents pulling your kids along. There are many fun activities for kids, large and small, at the Taste of New Paltz.

Though it is geared mainly toward teenagers and adults to relax and work out stress, the younger kids are welcome. A yoga instructor will be provided for the younger kids. As a New Paltz karate student, I know how much fun that activity can be. It’s a good self-defense learning experience for kids of all ages. I highly recommend you kids of all ages visit the New Paltz Karate demonstrations at the Taste.

As a little kid and even now as an older kid I have loved creative art. Most other kids I know do, too. Once Upon a Tea Party, which is a story acted out before your child’s eyes, has a special place in kids’ lives. When I was a little girl, I never tired of stories of princesses, superheroes and storybook characters. Seeing actors and actresses bring these stories to life adds a magical dimension to the experience. But what is Taste of New Paltz for if not for taste? Kids are offered a unique variety of foods, including those different from what their parents might want to eat. Regardless of adult preferences, kids are allowed to taste whatever foods that

they might want to at the Taste of New Paltz. As a kid who loved and still loves food, I know this food freedom will be well enjoyed by kids of all ages. Whether you’re a parent who wants your kids to enjoy themselves separately so you

can have some time off to enjoy yourself, too, or a kid looking for something fun to do at the event your parent dragged you along to, I can confidently guarantee you that there will be something to make you very happy at this year’s Taste of New Paltz.

A tasty treat for all Everyone wins in an apple-pie contest By Elisabeth Henry

L

ast year’s drought brought small apples. This year’s many deluges promise plump and juicy pickings. The Honeycrisps I purchased at Adams in Kingston, fresh from the fields of Kleinskill Farm in Germantown, are perfection. Honeyed. And crisp. This is no small praise. I consider myself an apple connoisseur. Never mind that my personal orchard is something of a fiasco. Despite years of effort, it seems the trees’ preferences are not met by my soil, my pruning skills, my angle to the sun, my position in the wind, my altitude. Every year there is a frost that haunts my hillside. It is

somehow strategically set in motion by the Hudson Valley/Mountain Weather God, to dispatches the pretty blossoms and their tiny fruit buds. The delicate pink petals litter the still brown furrows. The buds pucker. Later, the branches will flourish with leafyness, but not with fruity goodness. And yet, there was one year, a “mast” year, when the limbs were drooping with apples in my little orchard and everywhere else on this mountain. Oh, there were clues. I should have known before I planted. There are no commercial orchards hereabouts and very, very few individual trees that yield. The wild apples are an exception, but their fruit is as tough and pulpy as one might expect from their hardiness. Their tiny fruit is “a poor

substitute for Malus domestica.” I have abandoned the idea of a personal Garden of Eden, and rely on the black dirt and soft air closer to the sea to provide the sweet, tart and perfumed flesh and pretty skin of that symbol of The Fall of Man. And pie. My interest in and yen for apples began when I was a child. My grandmother would give my mother a paper sack full of Winesap apples, not a common variety back then and less common now. Commercial growers probably hold the secret as to why. It could be that the Winesap belongs to that very early type of apple grown more for cider than for eating or baking. Cider was important in the old days. Settlers preferred it to water. It was easier

to make than beer. My grandmother did not include me on what I regarded as her wonderfully secret forays into upstate New York apple orchards. I have corrected this for my children. Apple picking is as much a part of our family’s traditions as ringing bells to call in Christmas. Apple picking is a reason to live in this part of the world. Apple orchards are beautiful because apple trees are beautiful. The slender, grafted saplings look like any old new growth. Pruning, and biology take over. The silhouette of a mature tree is graceful, almost emotional. By harvest time, a thriving tree will have thick, glossy, green foliage accented by pops of red or yellow. Most orchards grow dwarf trees, both for ease of picking and for ease of pruning. Tempting as it may look, do not climb on these venerable plants. They are heavily laden already, and perhaps your penchant for pie makes the addition of yourself too much to bear. Orchard owners are the generous sort. You are very welcome to lie beneath the fragrant boughs, watch the clouds, and eat, and dream of the hot and flaky, sweet and sticky next episode in this slice of heaven that is your life during this season. It’s possible but not productive to debate how and why apple pie is the standard by which all other things claiming to be American are held. The answer may lie in that most American of all things ‌ marketing. Emily Upton, writing for Today I Found Out, explores the expression “as American as apple pie.â€? The actual genesis of expression is hard to track, wrote Upton. In 1902 a newspaper article wrote that ‘no

pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished.’ A 1924 advertisement in the Gettysburg Times promoted ‘New Lestz Suits that are as American as apple pie.’ And by World War II, the association was cemented. American soldiers would tell journalists that they were fighting for ‘mom and apple pie.’ We claimed the apple, and then we

appropriated the pie. The first recorded recipe for apple pie, written in 1381 in England, called for figs, raisins, pears, and saffron in addition to apples. Early apple-pie recipes generally didn’t include sugar. Their pastry crust was â€œcoffinâ€? pastry, which was intended as an inedible container, not a part of the pie. No wonder the Brits had themselves a

I present Linda Donough’s winning entry in the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Oh, yes. A note. As your palate matures, you will find that apple pie should only be created and consumed during its season. There is a marked difference between a pie steaming with freshly picked, baked apples and that

which has been corrupted by fruit past its prime, or worse, canned. The antidote to sadness for this admittedly brief autumnal lip-smacking interlude is to eat nothing but apples. Why not? I’m sure it’s nutritious. Otherwise,

horses, deer, squirrels and all manner of little mammals would not devour apples as they do. Horses love them so much that one must fence off the apple trees, else the horses get drunk on the fallen fruit when it turns. Bite an apple in a stable and the resounding crunch of that will set off impassioned neighs and stall kicking. The only way to guard one’s apple trees from determined deer is to build an eight-foot fence. Everybody wants apples. Don’t feel guilty. Do visit all the wonderful orchards in our valley. You will find acres to wander. You can pick your own. You can buy freshly made apple-cider doughnuts, which are delicacies that whet the appetite for pie, because you can bag ’em up and eat them in the car. All the while know that you are supporting local enterprises, green industry, and ensuring that, with enough pie, you are preventing disease and injury because, as everyone knows, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. We simply must adjust to suit our short growing season in order to get in the 365 recommended doses.

An evolving taste New Paltz event changes with changing times By Terence P. Ward s an event, the Taste of New Paltz continues to evolve. That’s a good thing, because New Paltz itself is perpetually changing. Ulster County is being increasingly positioned for tourism driven by agriculture and the rural landscape. New Paltz offers orchards 75 miles from the Big Apple. This year the event organizers have embraced that local fruit, the apple, in ways that reflect that heritage. New executive director Jen Roe has been in the thick of planning the event since she took the job about two months ago. “I have lots of jobs,” she said. Unlike the committee members supporting her, this is Roe’s main employment. As executive director, it’s her job to see that the many organizational threads get pulled into the one seamless tapestry that is the Taste of New Paltz. While there’s almost always another event to plan at the chamber office, Roe also must pay attention to trends that impact business around here. One that’s on the minds of local government officials is the push to connect the trail systems which have been evolving throughout the state. The Empire State Trail, which will bring together walking paths from Battery Park to Buffalo, will run right through New Paltz. If the success of the Walkway Over the Hudson is any indicator, this trail could bring quite a bit of traffic through town. As with those coming by car, those trail visitors may wish to stop to spend money. Even after the river-to-ridge trail is completed, the Taste of New Paltz at the Ulster County Fairgrounds on Libertyville Road won’t be easily accessible by foot. However, features new and old make it something one might want to walk a few miles to visit. A glorious fit is the apple-pie contest making its debut this year. The New Paltz region is rife with orchards, making such

the judges are, they will be considering features like the crust, the overall flavor and the appearance of each pie. The smell of a well-baked pie is intoxicating. A good pie can be hard to resist. Trails might be seen the same way. Cer-

tain trails are doubly attractive because they are being paid for by state or private money, leaving little fiscal downside for local public officials. Trails enhance zoning districts designed to be attractive to pedestrians. Trails invite walking, a healthy activity, in a region where outdoor recreation and healthy living are celebrated. That there is little, if any, public opposition to the trail movement is itself food for thought. Food is the core of the Taste of New Paltz. The ability to taste what many different vendors can be a delight. The Taste is one of the oldest events of its kind in the state. Attendees this year will be able to vote for their favorite in three categories:

restaurants, food trucks, and distilleries/ wineries. If things go as Roe hopes, the winner might even get a plaque made of local apple wood, carrying forth the apples-in-the-Hudson-Valley theme. Apple orchards were once more numerous in Ulster and surrounding counties, but much of that land has been sold to developers who built housing and the like. The concept of “open space” suggests the retention of the remaining

agrarian landscape and rural character. The movement to create trails arose first from the opportunity the presence of miles and miles of unused railroad tracks provided for communities. Now those old easements have been retooled to form the backbone of this burgeoning trail system. The trails connect remaining open spaces. A balance is being struck between the need for places families can be reared and places where families can enjoy the benefits of nature. Billed as a family event, the Taste of New Paltz will include free face-painting, arts and crafts, and several different attractions dealing with animals. Families

include more than children, however. A visitor will also discover craft vendors and a farmer’s market, plus the food vendors and health and business expos. This event is a cooperative affair between chamber staffers and an army of volunteers. These are the people checking bracelets at the gate, people helping with parking and traffic, people managing transitions between bands, and people generally ensuring this complex event runs smoothly. Many are associated with the chamber’s member businesses. There’s also a longstanding show of support from the fraternities and sororities of SUNY New Paltz as well. For so joyous an event,

the whole community comes together. Big events cannot easily be run with a small staff, and this is an opportunity to feel part of a larger community. “We still need volunteers!” Roe offered. The more threads she can pull into the tapestry, the stronger and more beautiful it will become. That’s what the New Paltz region is all about. The event runs on volunteers, but it’s not quite free, although parking is. Admission is a measly three dollars if reservations are made online at tasteofnewpaltz.com, or five bucks at the gate. Food costs extra, money you’ll be happy to pay.
