International Pickle Festival in Rosendale this Sunday

EVENT The Rosendale International Pickle Festival makes its 21st appearance this Sunday, November 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Rosendale Recreation Center. It was founded by local barber/garden center proprietor/town historian Bill Brooks, his wife Cathy and their friend Eri Yamaguchi, who missed the traditional tsukemono of her homeland. What started out as a Japanese dinner party for 200 soon turned into a celebration of all things pickled that attracted about 1,000 people the first year, and by now, 5,000 or more annually. From the beginning, it has also been a fundraiser that benefits different community projects each year. A highlight of the Pickle Festival is always the county-fair-style competition for home-fermented concoctions. Eligible categories in the Home Pickling Contest include Dill Pickles, Sweet Pickles, Dilly Beans, Pickled Fruit, Pickled Root Vegetables, Pickled Vegetables and Best of Show. Competitors may submit up to three entries in any combination of categories. Drop off two labeled jars of the same item for each entry (one for display, one for judging) at the Rec Center by 11:45 a.m. on the day of the Festival. Judging begins at noon. It’s also a fun gathering for those more interested in tasting pickle products than in creating them. Some 100 vendors setting up shop both inside the Rec Center and in and around the large tent outside will offer pickled and other prepared foods, crafts and packaged gourmet products. There’s live music, and late in the afternoon, the Pickle Triathlon gets underway with a Pickle-Eating Contest, a Pickle-Juice-Drinking Contest and a Pickle-Tossing Contest. Admission to the Rosendale International Pickle Festival costs $5 per adult; kids get in free. The Rosendale Community Center is located at 1055 Route 32, just south of its intersection with Route 213. Parking is limited; shuttle service to the Rec Center is available from the former Tillson School on Gristmill Road and from the Creek Locks Road ballfield. Hudson Valley Hullabaloo in Kingston this weekend

T

he Hudson Valley Hullabaloo, featuring the best of local handmade goods, returns to the Andy Murphy Midtown Neighborhood Center in Kingston on the weekend of November 17 and 18. The sixth annual Hullabaloo features more than 75 vendors, offering everything from food and spirits to jewelry, ceramics, clothing, woodworking, leather goods, health and beauty products. Once called “the nexus of arty and party,” the Hullabaloo is a consciously curated fair. Maya MacLaughlin of Maya’s Jams and Syrups, a return maker to the Hullabaloo, explains, “Since the curation is so great, there’s no real overlapping of products or goods or crafts, so I think the shoppers don’t get bored walking around. There’s so much variety to choose from.” Admission costs $2, free for kids 12 and under. A complete list of all the vendors and details can be found at the website below. W

hat’s your favorite doc of all time? Mine never seems to show up on any of the Greatest Documentaries lists, sad to say (though you can see a poster for it in one of the bathrooms at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck). It’s Cane Toads: An Unnatural History (1988, Mark Lewis), a hilarious examination of an invasive species that has been wreaking havoc in Australia since the 1930s but acquiring a quirky fanbase along the way. And now, I’m delighted to report that Cane Toads may have found a worthy new successor: Rodents of Unusual Size, which has, as

far as I can tell, nothing at all to do with tacky monster costumes in The Princess Bride. According to one of the filmmakers, Chris Metzler, Rodents of Unusual Size is “an offbeat environmental documentary about giant swamp rats invading coastal Louisiana and the story of a defiant people on the edge of the world, who are defending their communities, culture and livelihoods from the onslaught of this curious and unexpected invasive species. Chris, you had me at “offbeat. Properly called nutria, the members of this furry caravan from South America grow up to 20 pounds apiece, reproduce

faster than they can be hunted and are gnawing away at a furious pace with their big orange incisors at vegetation that helps protect the Louisiana shoreline from the impact of hurricanes. The film spotlights a Delacroix Island native named Thomas Gonzales who is on a mission to stop the nutria’s depredations. Rodents of Unusual Size will screen at two venues in our region this week. There will be discussions with director Jeff Springer following the showings at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck on Friday, November 16 at 8:15 p.m. and at Time and Space Limited (TSL) in Hudson on Saturday, November 17 at 7:45 p.m.

Mrs. Hayes died before she was able to bequeath the building to the troupe, as she had intended, but a couple of Players managed to scrape together enough money to pay off the $4,200 balance of the loan. The troupe transformed the former coachroom into a rehearsal and performance space, the horse stalls into equipment storage, the hayloft into space for props, the sleeping quarters into an enormous wardrobe where costume hats hang from the ceiling. A circa-1894 building at 12 Augusta Street that once served as the coachhouse for the Coykendall estate became, in 1950, the permanent home of the longest-operating community theater company in Ulster County. At the time, a community theater group called the Footlighters had splintered into two factions over the question of whether or not to bring in professional directors for their productions. One of the proponents of hiring outside directors, George Betts, got wind of the decommissioned coachhouse coming on the market via Mrs. Carlyn Gross, a theater buff whose husband owned the Governor Clinton Hotel. ollowing up on his knockout show of paintings, sculpture and drawings in August 2017 at the Arts Society of Kingston, Ernest Shaw will be exhibiting his new photographs at the Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery at SUNY-Ulster from November 16 to December 14. Shaw got his start as an artist teaching

“Psychologically, the shadow worlds are viewed as a projection of denied aspects of the ‘self’ onto an ‘other’… I view these photographs as narrative, our place in this world.” himself how to weld steel in the early 1970s; his subsequent monumental sculptures grace various public sites and museum grounds. While the medium of photography might seem like an odd choice for a sensibility that revels in the physicality and process of carving wood, welding or hammering steel, painting on burlap and rubbing graphite or chalk onto large pieces of paper for tonal effects, and whose figurative imagery revolves around myth, the self and primal archetypes, Shaw’s photographs explore the same terrain, representing a continuum rather than a

break from his earlier work. Selections will be shown from two series. Are We Flesh or Are We Wood consists of a series of photographs depicting the artist’s shadow (for which the exhibition takes its name, “The Form of Shadows”). The images dramatically simplify the human form, which looms over the ground, exaggerated in length and gestural. Indeed, they have a metaphysical charge, referring to “time, memory, gestures, vulnerability and mortality,” as the artist writes. “Psychologically, the shadow worlds are viewed as a projection of denied aspects of the ‘self ’ onto an ‘other’…I view these photographs as narrative, our place in this world,” notes Shaw, who besides making art maintains a psychiatry and psychotherapy practice and teaches mediation. life and death. Elegant and spare, the arrangements are transcendent in the way the white ground pivots between surface and infinite space (the two dead crows that appear in many of the works serve as avatars of our own mortality, which refuses to be laid to rest), and formally expressive: the tendrils of grass and other vegetation have the delicacy of deftly drawn graphite lines. Shaw, who resides in the Town of Kingston, will also be showing several of his earlier large figurative paintings, whose black, looming forms relate to the shadow photographs, as well as some works-on-paper, including a series of small collage/paintings done 20 years ago in Maine: The artist produced one a day over an eight-day vacation. A nine-and-

he local jazz promoter and player collective Jazzstock presents Ryan Keberle & Catharsis on Saturday, November 17 at the Senate Garage in Kingston. The lauded trombonist Keberle (voted Rising Star Trombonist in the Downbeat International Critics’ Poll) explores the intersection of indie art song, jazz and world music with Catharsis, whose latest politically charged record, Find the Common, Shine the Light, was described by The Nation as “unpretentiously intelligent and profoundly moving.” Downbeat considers it “a project that could speak both to the current state of political unrest and to music’s ability to overcome it.” Catharsis features Keberle on trombone and keyboard, Philip Dizack on trumpet, Camila Meza on voice and guitar, Noam Wiesenberg on bass and Eric Doob on drums. Tickets cost $25 in advance, $30 on the day of the show and $10 for students.

he Poughkeepsie Mini-Maker Faire takes over the Poughkeepsie Day School on Sunday, November 18. This fair comes with a powerful cultural agenda and exhortation: “Instead of being a consumer of technology,” the promoters write, become a ‘Maker.’ Whether you are a future computer programmer or engineer, an artist or musician, you can be part of the maker movement. NIGHT SKY

Nature-lover’s tip: Look opposite the Sun

O

pen any astronomy text and check the index for “antisolar point.” Result: nothing. It’s ignored as thoroughly as a teenager’s curfew. Yet that strange and unique place hosts an exciting mixture of phenomena. The antisolar point (duh) is the spot opposite the Sun. By day it’s marked by the shadow of your head. At night it’s the most happening place in the heavens. Even ancient cultures picked up on the uniqueness of the antisolar point and kept track of where it lurked in the darkness of the starry sky. Whenever the Moon wandered into that spot, it was invariably full – just as it will be next week on Thanksgiving. And whenever it was precisely opposite the Sun, as it will be two Full Moons later in late January, they always witnessed a total lunar eclipse. Since, as we’ve seen, that’s also the location of Earth’s shadow, they figured that a lunar eclipse must be due to our world’s shadow being cast upon the Moon. Check it out the night of January 20, when our region will see a good one. This was the reasoning that convinced Aristotle that Earth could be nothing but a sphere. (Some of his C-student friends must have argued that a flat disc can also cast a round shadow, but he surely had the rebuttal handy: A flat disc would sometimes be oriented sideways to the Sun, or nearly so, and the shadow would then be a weird straight line: something never seen on the Moon.) Later, Aristarchus calculated the distance to the Moon using the dimensions of Earth’s shadow. People like us, who live far from city lights, can sometimes see a faint oval glow in the night sky, marking the antisolar point. This is the Gegenschein, which means “counterglow.” It’s the reflection of sunlight from countless dust grains that float between the planets. Like a beaded movie screen or highway sign that always throws light straight back toward its source, only dust precisely opposite the Sun bounces light to us. Anyway, that’s what they say. We live in an inky-dark area where the zodiacal light, auroras and other faint phenomena show up routinely, but I’ve never seen the Gegenschein. I trust it’s there. Why would anyone make it up? By day, the antisolar point occupies the exact center of every rainbow. A normal rainbow is somewhat less than a full semicircle because its center lies below the horizon. But when you look down upon sunlit water droplets, like toward a lawn sprinkler’s spray, you can see more than half a rainbow, and the antisolar point at its center shows up nicely as the shadow of your head. When walking on a dewy lawn or looking out an airplane window toward the ground,

By day, the antisolar point occupies the exact center of every rainbow.

sequel due out in a month, Mary Poppins Returns, that will star Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda as the apparently immortal Mary and Bert. You may even have read the books by P. L. Travers on which the story is based. But have you ever seen it onstage, with full orchestration? Mary Poppins the Musical comes to the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck this weekend, courtesy of the Rhinebeck Theatre Society, and will run through December 9. Ellen Honig directs a cast that includes a trained aerialist, Kate Lori, in the title role, so we can expect some flying sequences! Shows begin at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets cost $27 general admission, $25 for seniors and students; and, for an extra $10 after the first three Sunday matinées,

the antisolar point is marked by a bright glow called the Heiligenschein. (Somehow those German terms always sound like a prestigious government medal: “Stand at attention, Fritz; today we honor you with the Heiligenschein!”) When your jetliner flies just above a cloud layer, the antisolar point (its position marked by the plane’s shadow) will always be surrounded by a vivid series of colorful rings. This is called the “glory.” It’s quite exciting to see glories, even though they’re totally predictable. In the current climate of air travel, it’s important to suppress the temptation to shout to the strangers seated all around you, “I see the glory!” Unlike rainbows, glories come in a variety of sizes, depending on the size of the water droplets. They’re one more reason to choose an airplane seat with care, to be sure you get a window on the side opposite the Sun – meaning the left side when flying west-toeast (seat A). Even twilight offers wonderful antisolar phenomena. The “twilight wedge” is that dark blue-grey band that hugs the eastern horizon every day for about 20 minutes, centered at sunset. This is nothing less than Earth’s shadow itself. It’s as reliable as dusk: On a clear day, you simply cannot have a sunset without the twilight wedge vividly materializing. Less common – maybe five percent of the time – enormous converging rays radiate from the twilight wedge. These dark angled streaks or alternating blue-and-pink fans meet and precisely terminate like the point of a V at the antisolar point. Not surprisingly, they’re called antisolar rays. Fifteen minutes after any November sunset, when the Sun is some three degrees below the southwestern horizon, antisolar rays will converge at a point that high above the northeastern horizon: Yes, Fritz, precisely opposite the sun. Give that man another Heiligenschein! The Gegenschein. Twilight wedge. Antisolar rays. Heiligenschein. Lunar eclipse. The glory. Rainbow centers. What part of the sky offers a greater variety of phenomena? Or is more neglected? – Bob Berman Want to know more? ADVERTISING SALES REPRESENTATIVE US: Ulster Publishing is an independent, locally owned media company. It began in 1972 with the Woodstock Times, and now publishes the New Paltz Times, Kingston Times and Saugerties Times, plus Almanac Weekly, an arts & entertainment guide, and Hudson Valley One, a regional news and entertainment site. Ulster Publishing has a mission: to reect and enrich our communities. Our content is 100-percent local – locally written, photographed, edited, printed and distributed. We publicize local businesses and encourage our readers to shop local. We publicize local events because we want our communities to be vibrant places where people come together. We don’t just write about the controversy, but the good news too, because we love these communities and we want readers to know about the great people who live here. We don’t just write about our communities, we’re part of them. YOU: A self-motivated and energetic person who cares about local businesses and wants to help them succeed because thriving local businesses are part of what makes the Hudson Valley (or any place) special. You like to shop locally and eat at locally-owned restaurants. You tend to feel invested in the success of these enterprises, sometimes thinking of ways they could better promote themselves and reach more potential customers. You believe in community journalism and want it to succeed as well because, like local business, it helps preserve a sense of place. In a time of media consolidation and fake news, there’s something charming and essential about an independent local media company with fact-checked writers on the ground and in the trenches. You’re aware that advertising options have multiplied for local businesses, but believe local media can offer something unique. Animals

We have wonderful adult cats at the Saugerties Animal Shelter! They’re looking for homes where they’ll be loved, cared for and given the kindness all animals deserve. In return, you will get unconditional love and a companion of a lifetime. Why adult cats? You know how large or small they’ll be, their temperament which, by the way, only gets sweeter when taken out of the stress of being in a cage in a shelter. Speak to Elly, Morgan, or any of the volunteers to see which one or ones would do best in your home. All adult cats have been spayed/neutered, up to date w/ shots and litter pan trained. MOLLY; 6-year old medium hair tuxedo, very sweet and shy cat girl. ATHENA; 2-year old affectionate black and white tuxedo cat girl. She was a wonderful mama to many kittens; so wonderful that she took in some orphaned babies and loved them like they were her own. Athena does well w/other respectful kitties. BOBBI; approximately 2/3 years old. She’s white w/gray stripes. If you have attention to give, Bobbi will happily be on the receiving end. MOO; 2-year old black & white cat girl. A laid back gal & was a great mama to her kittens. Now it’s her turn to be loved. BRITTANY; approximately 3-years old mostly black cat girl w/a white bib & muzzle. She’d love a home where she could be the star of the show. Saugerties Animal Shelter can welcome you Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Call (845)679-0339. MEOW!!! AKC Cocker Spaniels. Beautiful pups. Vet checked, first shots. Also, stud dogs. Breeding 33 years. Visit website: breeders.net (google); email: harmonyhr@aol.com. Call 845-687-7978. Reasonable. Terms available. Harmony ToKalon Kennels. Want to help but can’t adopt a cat? Don’t forget about our Foster Program! Visit our website UCSPCA.org, for details & pictures of cats to foster. Come see us & all of our other friends at the Ulster County SPCA, 20 Wiedy Road, Kingston ( just off the traffic circle). Open 6 days a week, 11:30 a.m.3:30 p.m. (Closed on Mondays.) (845)3315377.
