Come together A disquisition on giving and getting by Elisabeth Henry

Thanksgiving by Billy Collins The thing about the huge platter of sliced celery, broccoli florets, and baby tomatoes you had arranged to look like a turkey with its tail fanned out was that all our guests were so intimidated by the perfection of the design no one dared disturb the symmetry by removing so much as the nub of a carrot. And the other thing about all that was that it took only a few minutes for the outline of the turkey to disappear once the guests were encouraged to dig in, so that no one else would have guessed that this platter of scattered vegetables ever bore

the slightest resemblance to a turkey or any other two- or four-legged animal. It reminded me of the sand mandalas so carefully designed by Tibetan monks and then just as carefully destroyed by lines scored across the diameter of the circle, the variously colored sand then swept into a pile and carried in a vessel to the nearest moving water and poured in – a reminder of the impermanence of art and life. Only, in the case of the vegetable turkey such a reminder was never intended. Or if it was, I was too busy slicing up even more vivid lessons in impermanence to notice. I mean the real turkey minus its head

and colorful feathers, and the ham minus the pig minus its corkscrew tail and minus the snout once happily slathered in mud.

holiday (give thanks!), creating the perfect environment for ridicule and faulty knowledge. Today’s didacticism arises, ironically, out of the isolated use of the expression, despite all those gratitude lists composed last January, residing now, crumpled, at the bottom of a discarded purse. In retrospect, the first Europeans had days of thanksgiving all the time, but those were not feast days. They were days set aside for prayer and worship. They were religious observances, celebrating communally and born of a sense of love and gratitude.

Ulster Publishing Co. In this the early immigrants were not alone. The observances of the people of the Iroquois Federation, who lived thus as well, were more closely bound to the rhythms of nature. The early immigrants -- indeed, most Europeans -- set aside days to worship for specific beneficences such as successful harvests or military victories. The Iroquois people had their rituals, too. Chief among these was burning tobacco at propitious moments: for the first sound of thunder to give thanks for rain, for a run of fish, for the first grasses pushing up through barren winter soil. Or for a kill. Every day was steeped in gratitude. This was

their “religion,” and it did not require special housing or official calendars or “whenever more three or more are gathered together.” Just one person would do. The Thanksgiving Address, a central prayer and invocation, dates back over a thousand years. It is still read today, before any assemblage of people. Even at the U.N. The belief that reading The Thanksgiving Address creates an atmosphere of calm and peace is true. It’s a rather lengthy oration. Copies of it are available. There is also a children’s book version by Chief Jake Swamp. Perhaps we should mirror the Iroquois in our

credit-card debt? What we need is a population educated in terms like “what the market will bear” and “what exactly am I getting for my money?” We can start in pre-school. My son attended an elementary school where the music teacher enticed students to the after-school chorus by paying them in Monopoly money, which could then be used to purchase items she arranged on folding tables once a month. These were obviously used toys, but the concept worked. Faithful attendance for holiday music-night rehearsal got you two, maybe three transformers. A friend taught her son basic addition by playing “21.” For quarters. Learning can happen if you put a little cash behind it. But those were different times. Every marketer out there working knows that shopping is a form of mob rule, and the mob is stupid. Nobody has to be part of the mob. Not yet, anyway. The very prompts and triggers and tickles and itches that fuel Black Friday also account for a lot that passes for knowledge in our grim and social-media-soaked times. It is true that invaders came to these blessed shores and sickened, murdered, and displaced the original people. But it wasn’t the settlers of the New England colony who did it. Those folks were roughly divided into two types, those seeking religious freedom and those seeking a better life. The Wampanoag people, the original people of that area, lived in harmony with the Europeans

Ulster Publishing Co. for fifty years. Fifty years of peace. We cannot, and will never, forget or forgive what happened to the many tribes of Native Americans that lived here when hordes of invaders took over. But it’s possible also to take a lesson from that first contact. If William Bradford could manage to form bonds of friendship with people who did not look, dress, or hold beliefst hat he did, or like anyone had ever looked in the history of his civilization, and vice-versa, surely it must be possible for us to entertain an open curiosity about those who differ from us. Our Thanksgiving is not, nor ever has been, a religious holiday. It’s supposed to bring us together to celebrate us coming together. We’re gettin’ a little cray-cray here with the political fervor. I’ve been dropped and shunned by friends because I failed to show any sign of collapse at political outcomes they regarded as both singular and unsuccessful. Hell, we look alike, we talk alike, at times we even walk alike. And yet, despite years of friendship, money-lending, creative collaboration, dinner providing and the “loaning” of never-to-be-seen-again wardrobe items, I am rejected. All because I won’t hate. Nor will I idolize.

’M THINKING THAT AN ANTIDOTE TO THE SEASON OF getting is to change our focus from the “thanks” in Thanksgiving to the “giving.” I’m not talking about Christmas lists. I’m not talking about money. That’s cheap and easy. It’s obvious that’s there’s lots of ways to give besides shopping, if we give it some thought. We can give time. My need for that did not end when I learned to write my name in cursive, and neither did yours. Pay attention, and give that thought some thought. It is inevitable that shopping will happen. But we don’t have to frequent big stores that do not see us. All they see is how many bar codes are accounted for at the end of the day. Go to church craft fairs. You may have to work

a little to find them, but they are worth the effort. Go to the little local museums we have, or independent bookstores. Shop small. That way, you’re giving lots more than money. You’re giving validation. You’re giving someone the means to continue as an artist, or a craftsperson, or as a business. And you are probably giving a gift that will matter. In those small, quiet, peaceful shops, you can give thought to the person for whom you shop. You can enjoy the uniqueness of the items. You will be seen and appreciated. If you try a little harder, you may be able to find the contact information for local knitting groups and other independent craftspeople. I found a lady who makes baby blankets, and all my grandchildren are now wrapped in her soft, warm fusions of love. These people don’t have stores, but

they have skills, and they have product. Likewise producers of local honey and syrup, holiday greens. I even know a woman who bakes and sells miracles of cakes and breads and cookies and pies right out of her own kitchen. One must order early, or lose out. Shopping small gives one the all-important hallmark of a grownup. Discipline. Choice items are not mass-produced. URTHERMORE, ON THIS MEDITATION OF “GIVING,” let’s consider those who give. When someone gives of themselves, you feel it. Genuine generosity is not clouded by the fact that the giver offers the gift with a slight pause. The baker looks over the loaf one last time, the bookseller brushes the book jacket as she rings it up, the floral designer sorts the stems as she hands you the receipt.

Ulster Publishing Co. In dog training, we must be vigilant to notice when the dog gives its eyes to us. Staring in to the eyes of a strange dog signals aggression. But when your boon companion looks searchingly in to your eyes he is looking for approval, or direction. He is giving himself to you. Give back. Likewise, when working with a horse, we look

He would tuck his head slightly as though to say, “I will work with you.” He was then perfectly safe. Thrilling, but safe. A gift in the mail is a joy to open — week after week!

This holiday season, give a gift subscription to one of Ulster Publishing’s weekly newspapers at the low cost of $15 for six months. If requested, we will also send you a gift card to mail or to put under the tree. Week in and week out, we tell the stories of our communities. Our news is independent and 100-percent local. No other newspaper lets you know what’s happening at all levels of local government, business, development, schools, sports, the environment and with your neighbors. Together, with Almanac Weekly — the region’s best guide to art, entertainment and adventure and a comprehensive calendar and classifieds — a subscription has something for everyone.
