100s of things to do every week

Leaving the house can be a wild ride...

New Year’s Eve in Kingston Have a hot time on a cold night in New York State’s first capital An outdoor street celebration on New Year’s Eve at 41.9270° N, 73.9974° W is a bold move. It can get pretty cold out there in Uptown Kingston. For the revelers, there are plenty of places to duck in an out of, dense human scrums and the dangerous, false-grail warmth of booze. But what about those onstage? I remember poor Lara Hope & the Ark-Tones headlining outdoors on a four-degree night and wondering how they got their fingers to work and their lips to not stick to the mesh grille of their SM58s. But that is exactly that kind of take-all-comers, gut-it-out determination that landed that band a long tour as direct support for the Brian Setzer Orchestra this very season. In Uptown Kingston, the corner of Wall and North Front Streets is the place to congregate at 11:50 p.m. on December 31. There will be merrymaking in the streets, capped by a fireworks display, sponsored by Basch and Keegan. The Uptown street celebration has all but monopolized NYE in Kingston. So what do you do if you like to go out for the occasion but can’t handle the climatological caprice of a street party? The little-city-that-could has a few attractive options for you. BSP 323 Wall Street, Kingston For late-night revelers aged 21 and over, the fun moves indoors beginning at 9 p.m. at BSP’s cavernous back theater. The BSP New Year’s Eve Extravaganza features Brooklyn funk

band Shareef Keyes and the Groove, hip hop performance poet Decora and DJ Khaje, plus special performances by Miss 360, Hudson Valley Circus Arts and Loosey Goosey Drag and Company. Dress up for Esther Joy’s Photobooth; sample the all-night food menu from PAKT and beers on tap from the Southern Tier Brewing Company. Tickets for the BSP party cost $20 in advance at http://bit.ly/2Eci1qL, $30 at the door. BSP is located at 323 Wall Street in Kingston’s Stockade District. Monday, Dec. 31 9 p.m.-? $30/$20 BSP Back Theater 323 Wall St. http://bspkingston.com/event/nyeextravaganza The Stockade Tavern 313 Fair Street, Kingston Just around the corner from the

hoopla, the warm, elegant but unpretentious Stockade Tavern, where cocktails are taken very seriously, will be throwing a party. There will be dancing, flaming punch and live music courtesy of Caprice Rouge, an irresistible Balkan/Roma ensemble, starting at 8:30 p.m. DJ Ali will keep the party going until the wee hours of 2019. For more information, visit www.stockadetavern.com. Lis Bar 240 Foxhall Avenue, Kingston Lis Bar, a new establishment in midtown, celebrates its first NYE in Kingston with a theme party of sorts. Artist/DJ Raven Fox will take celebrants on a music journey. Raven is a native New Yorker, associated with the ’80s Downtown New York City art and club scene, and especially with the late artist Keith Haring, whose work will be on display. Raven will start spinning at 10 p.m. There is no cover charge, and there will be a new winter menu

in the house style: Polish-inspired, tapas-style food. For more information, visit www.lisbar.com. Tubby’s 586 Broadway, Kingston A new and hip joint on Broadway, Tubby’s is explicitly describing their NYE offering as preparatory and complementary to the uptown celebration. “On your way uptown,” the management suggests, you can stop in for a meal of shepherd’s pie (vegan or meat) and good luck black-eyed peas, with a champagne toast at the premature hour of 10 p.m. For more information, visit www.tubbyskingston.com. Ole Savannah 100 Rondout Landing, Kingston Down on the waterfront of the Rondout, the industrial cathedral Ole Savannah will be ringing in the New Year with its menu of Southern-inspired cuisine plus specials and music by DJ Boomie starting at 9 p.m. Make a reservation. New Year’s Eve in Saugerties

he beginning of a new year has been celebrated at least since 2000 BCE, but not necessarily on a date that matches what we think of as the first calendar day. Until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar by Western cultures in 1752, New Year’s Day was a slippery designation, sometimes even landing in September or March. The beginning of our next orbit around the sun will be marked on December 31 in the Village of Saugerties starting at 10 p.m. It will be the fifth annual “stay local, stay safe” event, which draws thousands of people out into the crisp winter air. A stage will be set up on Main Street, where deejay Riley Cornelison will play music from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Many restaurants and bars will stay open later than usual, some with special offerings, New Year’s Eve menus and live music. Look for roving Boy Scouts with beverages, noisemakers and treats available for purchase (proceeds to benefit their programs). Then, at midnight, a countdown video and ceremonial ball drop at the intersection of Main and Market will bring in the New Year with raucous fanfare. Be sure to dress warmly and bring a folding chair. Main Street between Partition and Market Streets will be closed off from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. The Saugerties Chamber of Commerce is also hosting a night of Catskill Mountain Rock with the Paul Luke Band on New Year’s Eve. A $25 ticket will get you into the doors at the American Legion Post 72 for banquet-hall seating, hot and cold finger foods and a complimentary glass of champagne to bring in 2019. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. at 30 John Street in the Village of Saugerties. All proceeds will go to local veterans’ programs and community projects. – Ann Hutton Fifth annual New Year’s Eve in the Village, Monday-Tuesday, December 31-January 1, 10:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m., Main/Partition Streets, Saugerties; (845) 246-2321.

Falcon hosts Eddy Awards, Napoleon Murphy Brock on New Year’s Eve Midnight will strike twice at the Falcon on New Year’s Eve. Upstairs on the main stage, the virtual house band, Ed Palermo’s Big Band, presents the Eddys, a thoroughly suspicious awards program. Palermo’s original wheelhouse is radical big-band interpretations of the music of Frank Zappa, and for this special holiday show, the Eddys will be hosted by Zappaband royalty Napoleon Murphy Brock, Mothers of Invention vocalist and multi-instrumentalist during what many consider to the band’s greatest period. Downstairs at the Falcon Underground, one of the region’s premier blues ensembles, the Chris O’Leary Band, holds court: a six-piece band with horns featuring ace guitarist Chris Vitarello and others. This is the Falcon. There is no cover charge, but generous donation is the way they do it there. The Eddy Awards Monday, Dec. 31 8 p.m. The Falcon 1348 Route 9W Marlboro (845) 236-7970

They Might Be Giants at Daryl’s House on Sunday

T

he great critic Greil Marcus once called They Might Be Giants “the opposite of rock ’n’ roll.” He didn’t mean in it a good way. Bell-curve-busting kings of nerd-pop and AV room superheroes, TMGB exemplify the kind of “surface smart” and geeky, Advanced Placement cleverness that has always infuriated those who locate the genius of rock ‘n’ roll in its broad gestures, its cultural transgressions and its primitivism. Part of me thinks that said primitivism just provides critics like Marcus with a less cluttered surface on which to theorize in their own super-smart but generally more French ways. Playful, self-conscious meta-rock like TMBG comes preloaded with its own robustly developed intellectual dimension. It theorizes back. As an analyst of the politics of cool and the play of culture in music, Greil Marcus is totally awesome; but as a pure music critic, he has always struck me as a little…I don’t know, undermanned; and I think he is way off the mark regarding TMBG. From their self-titled debut in 1986 through 2018’s delightful return to form I Like Fun, TMBG have been so much more than clever. Surreal tricksters for sure, but also great melodists, tireless sonic experimenters and recombinant pop stylists, and writers of songs that are often obliquely touching and quite emotional in their own way. The Giants in question, of course, are two guys named John: Linnell and Flansburgh, childhood friends from Massachusetts who reunited to make art in New York City in the 1980s. It went well, and continues to. The former is an opulently gifted melody-writer; a great keyboard, accordion and saxophone player; and an eccentric intellectual who can write remarkably coherent historical narratives in verse (Check out “James K. Polk” for the proof ). He has accounted for the majority of TMBG’s small store of big hits (“Don’t Let’s Start,” “Ana Ng” and “Birdhouse in Your Soul” are all Linnell tunes). Flansburgh, on the other hand, is a worker, an assimilator and a practical pop scholar. He lacks Linnell’s effortless musicality and gift for living melodies, but makes up for it in effort, an acute command of stylistic reference and a modicum more of freewheeling rock than his partner. Many of Flansburgh’s best tunes (“Put Your Hand inside the Puppet Head,” “Twisting” and the Malcolm in the Middle theme song) have been rocking live highlights for years, freeing the live band from the occasional squareness of Linnell’s beatbox pop masterpieces. The synergy just works. – John Burdick They Might Be Giants, Sunday, Dec. 30, 8 p.m., Daryl’s House, 130 Route 22, Pawling, (845) 289-0185, www.darylshouseclub. com

T

he First Day Hike program began in 1992 in the state of Massachusetts. Wedding the health resolutions that tend to follow the excesses of the holidays and the turning of the calendar to an environmental and natural resource awareness campaign, First Day Hikes went national in 2012, with the offering of guided hikes in all of the 50 states. Not surprisingly, the nature-rich and environmentally-aware Hudson Valley honors First Day with a splendid and diverse variety of guided hikes this Tuesday, January 1. Shake off the night before and enjoy some natural beauty and camaraderie while you help further entrench this relatively new and bracing New Year’s Day tradition. First Day Hike at Catskill Interpretive Center Your new year can get off to a vigorous start on the afternoon of January 1 with a wintry stroll on the grounds of the Catskill Interpretive Center in Mount Tremper. The group will hike just as the day turns to dusk, watch the light change and finish with a campfire and cocoa. If there’s snow, you can bring your snowshoes (or call ahead for information about renting them). The hike will cover about a mile-anda-half over easy terrain. Participation in the First Night Hike is free, but preregistration is requested; e-mail obernard@catskillcenter.org or call (845) 688-3369. So it is that a reviewer can announce right up front, without being accused of being spoilery, that Peter Parker (Chris Pine) gets killed by the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: Into the SpiderVerse. monitoring young Miles at his charter school; Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), who talks like Bogey and can’t figure out how to work a Rubik’s Cube because he can’t see colors; Peter Porker/SpiderHam (John Mulaney), a spider who was bitten by a pig; and Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), an anime-style tech wizard with a spider robot sidekick. Miles’ challenge is to weather their collective skepticism while honing his awkward new spiderpowers to a point where he can fulfill his deathbed promise to Peter: to disable the supercollider with a thumb-drive MacGuffin. Much of the fun in Into the Spider-Verse derives from the snarky banter among this mismatched assemblage of arachnoid superheroes. The human pathos is grounded in Miles’ testy relationship with his straitlaced cop father, the oddly named (for a black dude) Jefferson Davis (Brian Tyree Henry), and in his misplaced admiration for his sketchy uncle Aaron (Mahershala Ali). Family turns out to be important (surprise!), and even Peter’s feisty Aunt May (Lily Tomlin) puts in an appearance. Story isn’t really the driver here. It’s not very profound, even judged by comic-book standards. What is truly special about Into the Spider-Verse is how spectacularly the animation melds gorgeous high-tech CGI with the ’50s/’60s aesthetic of the pop medium that cultural commentators nowadays dignify with the term “graphic novels.” If grids of painted panels could come to life, this is how they might move, with psychedelic dazzle and actionthriller dynamism. There’s an occasional deliberately over-the-top rendering of a comic sound effect, such as the words “clackity-clackity-clack” unrolling next to a keyboard being typed upon; but it doesn’t come off campy, like the 1960s Batman TV series with its “Bam!” “Oof!”

cue cards. It’s a more genuine and affectionate act of homage. This film, as a visual entity, serves as a stylish and eminently satisfying bridge between media – and works far more consistently than Kingpin’s glitchy particle accelerator to unite the worlds. As with Incredibles 2 earlier this year, Into the Spider-Verse masterfully serves to reinforce the question: Why even bother making live-action superhero movies anymore, when contemporary animation seamlessly makes comic-book fantasies all come true? – Frances Marion Platt

“Ruh-roh!” Star Date 12.23.18, Sunday morning was doing routine weekly blood tests for chemo prep when my oncologist asked why I was so out of breath. I told her that my breathing challenges had escalated over the past twelve days. During the 40 minutes of my appointment, I spiked a fever. I know this because my temperature was taken upon arrival that day for chemo prep (98.6 degrees, no fever), and when I was asked the routine weekly questions (99.1 degrees, low fever), before it quickly ratcheted up to a full-blown fever of 101.5 (same frequency as WPDH). When you splice a sudden onset fever with a heap of other health challenges, it spells, in the immortal words of Scooby Doo: “Ruh-roh!”

I

Fast*-forward seven hours with Wayne’s World wavy lines. (Fast in this context literally means “not eating,” which didn’t feel fast at all.) After enduring the resolute commitment to uphold “All the Testing Ever Created by Medical Science” along with its charming dance partner “Hurry Up and Wait” and its super low-key cousin “You’ll Feel a Pinch,” I was finally wheeled into the procedure room – I mean CathLab. That’s where they study cats, but they don’t want you dropping off your litters there randomly, so they use the extra “h” to create confusion. Please don’t tell them I mentioned any of this to you. After 30 minutes of repeatedly stabbing along my breastbone; pressed like I was on the wrong side of a CAT industrial roller, I discovered with local anesthetic the motto, “Hahaha, listening to 'Comfortably Numb’ works better than some of this stuff.” The doctor struggled to find a pool of fluid to draw out since he kept encountering scar tissue, and scar tissue cannot be drained like fluid can. And then, just like Australia vs. USA in 2012 when the women’s team rallied for a victory at 2-1, he tried a final option in a very tricky spot. He pierced and he scored! Plenty of fluid to go around! Since I never integrated meds for this procedure, recovery was brief, and it didn’t hurt! A mere four hours after that, I was provided a bed, and I appreciated every moment I could sleep in it... as in, moments, at the hospital, whose motto is “You’ll sleep for 40 seconds before the next whir or beep, and you’ll like it.” Yes, this fluid will rebuild, but we’ll cross that stream when we come to it. In the meantime, “Scooby Dooby Doo!” Head On and Heart Strong! Love, Erica Kids’ Almanac columnist Erica Chase-Salerno was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer in the Summer of 2015. If New Year’s runs late 2019 will begin with an eye- catching celestial alignment

I

f your New Year's Eve celebration keeps going into the wee hours, you'll be able to welcome 2019 in grand style. So happens, the year begins with an eyecatching celestial alignment. A brilliant apparition lights up the Eastern sky with the first dawn of the new year. Look in the direction of sunrise at 6:45 a.m. Face into the brightening dawn. A clear, unobstructed view in that direction will be helpful, and those whose homes are perched on sunrise-facing hilltops have the ideal setup. Some of us may have to walk a few minutes to the nearest wide-open field. You’ll see a slanted, diagonal line of bright celestial objects whose base is the southeast and whose highest point angles upper right of that. At the highest point hovers the thin waning crescent moon. To the moon’s lower left shines Venus, the very brightest “star” in all the heavens. Also known as the morning star, it is at its very brightest of the year right now. Extending that line from the Moon to Venus takes us to Jupiter, the night’s second-brightest “star,” which

is packed full of potential detail for the small telescope. These three are all up high enough to be obvious, even from city lights. But those with a truly unblocked eastern view can continue following that line down and leftward to where the elusive planet Mercury floats, not high above the horizon. If you see any “star” down in that spot, you’ve found it, because nothing else is there. If you're not up to greet the inaugural dawn of 2018, or if it’s cloudy that morning, check out that same location a day later, January 2. The lineup will still be there except now the Moon, a bit thinner, will float between Venus and Jupiter. Still very cool – and a good sign for amazing things to come. – Bob Berman Want to know more? MOMMA’S NOT COMING HOME.... All recently vetted & vaccinated; 3 loving, healthy cats looking for forever homes. 2 senior females; Cali: a lovely, mellow calico, aged 15 & Zsa-Zsa: a beautiful, gray & white w/the most lovely eyes, aged 13. THEN there’s Rory; a tuxedo w/a huge personality. He’s a young, sweet boy aged 5. Please find room in your homes & hearts. Would like to keep the senior ladies together if possible. email: Marnette2@gmail.com FOR ADOPTION: BETTY and Her Babies... Betty is a year old gray tabby cat girl who’s a wonderful mother to her 5 kittens: 2 boys (Antonio & Max) and 3 girls (Mikie, Tish and Alexandria). The kittens are also tabbies & are sweet, playful and loving & will be ready to go to their forever homes right after Christmas. Betty will be available for adoption when she is finished nursing the babies & spayed. We’re accepting adoption applications and look forward to meeting adopters within the next few weeks. Please email: DRJLPK@aol.com or text/call (917)282-2018 and leave your full name, best way and best time to reach you. Thank you! We have wonderful adult Cats & Dogs at the Saugerties Animal Shelter! They’re looking for homes where they’ll be loved, cared for and given the kindness all animals deserve. In return, you will get unconditional love and a companion of a lifetime. Why adult cats or dogs? You know how large or small they’ll be, their temperament which will only get sweeter when taken out of the

stress of being in a cage in a shelter. Speak to Elly, Morgan, or any of the volunteers to see which one or ones would do best in your home. DEXTER; 8-year old Pit mix, is so stressed at the shelter. His caregivers, whom he loved dearly, surrendered him. If you’d like to adopt an older dog whose heart is broken, please visit Dexter at the shelter. Dexter needs to be your one and only; please- no children or other pets. Dexter wants to love again and to be loved. QUEENIE; 8-year old petite short-hair tabby, very sweet, loves to give kisses & have her tummy rubbed: a great lap cat! She’s used to being around other cats. We believe she was abandoned. ATHENA; 2-year old affectionate black & white tuxedo cat girl. She was a wonderful mama to many kittens; so wonderful that she took in some orphaned babies and loved them like they were her own. Athena does well w/other respectful kitties. BRITTANY; approximately 3-years old mostly black cat girl w/a white bib & muzzle. She’d love a home where she could be the star of the show. All adult cats have been spayed/ neutered, up to date w/shots and litter pan trained. Saugerties Animal Shelter can welcome you Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Call (845)679-0339. MEOW!!! Want to help but can’t adopt a cat? Don’t forget about our Foster Program! Visit our website UCSPCA.org, for details & pictures of cats to foster. Come see us & all of our other friends at the Ulster County SPCA, 20 Wiedy Road, Kingston (just off the traffic circle). Open 6 days a week, 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (Closed on Mondays.) (845)331-5377.
