CHECK IT OUT Pine Bush UFO Fair lands again on Saturday
The Rondout Valley/Route 209 corridor has been a hotbed for UFO sightings since long before Whitley Strieber wrote his 1987 best-seller
Communion, about his alleged alien abduction from a cabin in Accord. The little town of Pine Bush decided to embrace this dicey distinction by making an annual tradition of hosting a UFO Fair. You don’t need to have seen inexplicable lights in the sky or crossed paths some dark night with “grays,” or even believe that extraterrestrial visitors exist, to find some fun at this event, which returns this Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pine Bush UFO Fair takes place mostly outdoors, along Main Street – although there’s also a Speaker Tent at 51 Main Street (affectionately termed Area 51) where you can hear UFO experts, paranormal speakers and authors hold forth on the area’s history as an alien

magnet and other topics, plus a walkthrough attraction called the UFO Museum & Paranormal Center. Plenty of folks will be cosplaying, and the Alien Stroll at 1:30 p.m. offers photo ops galore. You can play the game show You Bet Your Asteroid, chase down clues in the “EyeSpy an Alien” scavenger hunt and ogle the eldritch charms of extraterrestrials in the Alien Beauty Pageant. There’s live music all day, pop-up street performances, tons of vendors of food and UFO novelties. Admission is free. Absolutely bring the kids. For more details, visit https:// pinebushufofair.com. NIGHT SKY
The No-Name Full Moon ...and its weekend conjunctions with giant planets
T
he Full Moon arrives this Saturday night, May 18. The last few years, some in the mass media have authoritatively announced an arbitrary, unofficial name for each month’s Full Moon. And while this one will be a special Full Moon, which we’ll get to in a minute, the truth is that in olden times, nobody could make up their minds what to call it. The Lakota Sioux called this, the Moon of the Shedding Ponies. The Laguna tribe referred to it as the Loam Plant Moon. It was the Flower Moon to the Algonquins. But not everyone in that tribe liked that label; some of them called this the Corn-Planting Moon, and yet others insisted we will all be gazing at the Milk Moon. Many dairy-loving Colonial Americans liked that one, so they also called the May Full Moon the Milk Moon. But other colonists called it the Mother’s Moon, and still others the Hare Moon. To the Cheyenne, this was the Moon when the Horses Get Fat. And with all this, we can’t blame the Zuni tribe for throwing up their hands and calling it the Moon with No Name. All this will be much too nuanced for the mass media, which is why you shouldn’t be surprised if some announcer on TV next weekend urges you to, say, “Go out tonight and see the Milk Moon!” Any way you slice it, this is the second-lowest Full Moon of the year. All Full Moons are low during the first hour after they’ve risen, of course; but when this weekend’s Moon reaches its highest point at midnight, it will still only be one-third of the way up the sky. This is actually a good thing. That’s because people most notice sky objects that are close to eyesight level, and relatively few crane their necks to look straight up. So this weekend’s Full Moon will attract attention. Adding to its conspicuousness, if you look at it around midnight, you’ll see the sky’s brightest “star” to its lower left. This is the planet Jupiter – meaning, the Moon and Jupiter will be in conjunction. If it’s cloudy Saturday and you have insomnia the next night, check out the Moon on

The tenth annual Gardiner Cupcake Festival will return to Wright’s Farm Orchard this Saturday, promising “something for the whole family, including over 10,000 cupcakes to choose from.” The event is notorious for the broad variety of cupcakes on offer, introducing attendees to oddball flavor combos involving bacon or hot peppers or turmeric or whatever else is trendy this year. There are also plenty of other attractions, including live bands all day, free bouncy houses and wagon rides, cupcake-decorating for kids and wine-tasting for adults. The organizers encourage flavor innovation by changing up the prize categories each year in the Amateur Cupcake Contest. For 2019, aspiring bakers will be asked to submit their best efforts in the categories of Best-Tasting Alcohol (Beer, Wine, Spirits or Cocktail) Inspired Cupcake, Best Frosting, Best Botanically Inspired Cupcake (Single or Multiple) or Best Farm-Themed Cupcake (Single or Multiple). Yes, multiple: Many past winners in the visual categories have been veritable cupcake dioramas more suited to a culinary arts museum display than to someone’s stomach. To register to enter, visit https://squareup.com/store/ wright-orchards-llc-4. The horrors recently being perpetrated upon refugees seeking a safe haven in America have driven many to contemplate once again the message of “The New Colossus,” Emma Lazarus’ 1883 poem that is inscribed on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty. “Huddled masses yearning to breathe free” don’t seem to get the welcome anymore that this nation has long promised them. Lazarus, it turns out, was a friend, relative and fellow Shearith Israel

he upcoming “Insider Tricks to Getting Published” event at Oblong Books is billed as follows: “Are the best writers more likely to get published? Not necessarily. Many excellent writers never get published, while many lessthan-stellar writers are serially published. Why?” The speaker’s book, Jeff Herman’s Guide to Book Publishers, Editors & Literary Agents: Who They Are What They Want How to Win Them Over, offers a few reasons, best summed up under the banner of “professionalism.” A less-talented writer can be successful by writing something for which there is a market, being productive, being persistent, seeking out a genre-appropriate agent, following submission guidelines, being receptive to constructive criticism and not badmouthing their agent on social media. The bulk of the book is devoted to Q&As with literary agents, with a focus on how they interact with unpublished writers. It is agents, not publishers, who read unsolicited manuscripts. They act as a sorting mechanism for the publishing industry, of which most are veterans. They work on commission: The better their authors do, the higher their compensation, so it pays for them to hustle. The potential for self-publishing to disrupt this system is a recurring theme. It’s quite easy for an author to transform a Word document into an e-book that can be sold on Amazon. It might even sell – especially if the author ponies up a few thousand bucks for freelance editing and cover design, and is part of an online community dedicated to a particular genre, like paranormal teen romance. The agents acknowledge that there are authors who began by self-publishing and went on to land contracts with big traditional publishing houses. But they warn against trying to pitch a book that has already been self-published and failed, which agents won’t want to touch. That warning reminded me of another that appears a few times: the admonition against agent-hopping. That is, if an agent agrees to represent you, you should shut up and trust that they are competent and trying their best. If the work isn’t selling, that’s the work’s fault. You should think twice about dropping the agent, because other agents will interpret that as a sign that your work can’t be sold and you will be regarded as a potentially difficult client. The “how to please the whims of the gatekeeper” approach employed by such books is necessary because publishing still has gatekeepers, for better or worse. First, the good: For all the talk of making yourself attractive to a potential agent and publisher, the literary world is full of smart people who are passionate about books and writing and can spot true talent among the introverted, less savvy self-promoting types, and fight for them. The bad: Gatekeepers aren’t always right. They tend to be elitist. They have their prejudices. They create a barrier between the artist and the people that strikes the 21st-century mind as unnecessary. A more modern attitude would say, “Post it all and let the wisdom of the crowd sort it out.” Ten years ago, everyone assumed that e-books would take over, but that didn’t happen. It turns out that there’s no replacement for the printed book – especially a weighty, well-designed hardcover with that fresh-off-the-presses smell and century-old publisher’s imprint, the opening dedication like a Renaissance work of art, the acknowledgements. It’s a beautiful object with prestige. A wall of books is a signifier of substance. It’s one bit of clutter even a minimalist will accept. Aspiring writers looking to get published and readers who are curious for a glimpse behind the curtain should both find something interesting in Wednesday’s event. Admission is free, but RSVP is requested on Oblong’s website at www.oblongbooks.com. – Will Dendis

T
hough they may not all realize it, contemporary women artists who are trying to reclaim the female body from the male gaze owe a great deal to pioneering painter/photographer/filmmaker/performance artist Carolee Schneeman, who first broke a lot of that ground beginning in the late 1950s. Her works, most famously Eye Body (1963), Meat Joy (1964), Fuses (1967), Interior Scroll (1975) and Up to and Including Her Limits (1976), celebrated female corporeality and challenged body taboos in ways deemed far too transgressive by critics of the time. But eventually the art world caught up with her, and the Venice Biennale awarded Schneeman its Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2017. She died on March 6. Schneeman, a Bard graduate who lived for many decades in a house on the outskirts of New Paltz that was reputed to have been a rural hideaway during Hollywood’s Golden Era for orgies attended by the likes of Errol Flynn, also had a special attachment to the City of Hudson. “Carolee loved Hudson and one of her last wishes was to throw a party in her honor at Second Ward Foundation,” say the organizers of the tribute that’s happening on Saturday evening, May 18. The event, titled “A Celebration: Carolee Schneemann (1939-2019),” begins with a screening at 5 p.m. of Breaking the Frame (2012), a documentary film by Marielle Nitoslawska profiling Schneeman. It will be presented at Hudson Hall, at 327 Warren Street in Hudson. From 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., a dance party will follow at the Second Ward Foundation, located at 71 North Third Street in Hudson. There will be a cash bar and complimentary hors d’oeuvres, deejaying by Tedd Patterson and a performance by Davon. A selection of Schneeman’s artwork will be on view in the side gallery. Admission is free to both the screening and the party, but reservations are recommended, at https://sforce.co/30o599J for the film screening and https://bit.ly/2VDUI30 for the dance party. Irish Catskills or Irish Alps: that region around Leeds, South Cairo, Oak Hill and East Durham that was for decades a summer vacation magnet for Irish residents of New York City. There was an area around Haines Falls known as the Italian Alps as well, and a German Alps near Round Top. But did you know that there was also a “Spanish Catskills”? Okay, that’s a bit of a misnomer, since the summer resorts of the Hudson Valley that catered to New Yorkers of Latino
descent were actually situated well south of the Catskill Mountains, centering on the town of Plattekill. The nearest mountains were the Shawangunk Ridge. To Spanish-speakers, these resorts were collectively known as Las Villas. For over 50 years, they were the most popular vacation destination for Latinos in the Northeast, celebrating Latin music, food and culture. MUSIC
Ratboy Jr. debuts new LP at Yard Owl in Gardiner this Sunday
I
t’s the blessed relief from the dictates of “cool” and the straitjacket of “relevance” that can make good kids’ music so, well, cool and relevant. It is the unquestioned assumption of authority and a downward-pointed educational motive that can make stale kids’ music such a darn bummer. While it does take its messaging quite seriously, “kindie rock” of the kind that Ratboy Jr. makes is not fundamentally moral or didactic in purpose. The only lesson this long-running duo has ever really seriously pursued is: Yes. It’s allowed. You have permission. Be thyself. Get wild. Get weird. Get tender and sad. Harm none. On Lucky Foot & Sunny Moon, as on their three previous collaborations, the band (Tim Sutton and Matt Senzatimore) and multiple Grammy-winning producer Dean Jones’ vivid and outrageous musical choices are permission in action: a broad palette of sonics, grooves, single-occurrence interlopers and gang vocals from the many kids in their lives. But as in every Jones production, the deployment is strict and graceful. If a Jones record is a kitchen sink, it is a darn tidy one. And Lucky Foot & Sunny Moon is an especially focused effort from this team. The funky epistemology of “Anything Can Be a Hat” (in which Matty proves to Timmy exactly that) exemplifies both the messaging and the mode of this lean, tight and ultra-listenable rock record. Its minimalist groove supports the escalating weirdness of a dialogue about the definition of a hat. Frequent Ratboy Jr. guest artist Shane Kirsch elevates everything with his brainy, elegant sax lines and his almost-superhuman phrasing. You can hear Senzatimore’s love of Zappa in it if you want, but you don’t have to. More than on any previous Ratboy Jr. record, Sutton’s passion for bedrock, universalist songwriting in the Tom Petty style shines forth on Lucky Foot & Sunny Moon. The apex of this impulse is the kind of punk-ethos manifesto “Play Us on the Radio,” which features an utterly charming deejay cameo from Radio Kingston founder and longtime Radio Woodstock program director and deejay Jimmy Buff. “We Get By” references the thunk groove and synth sounds of the Cars, while the barebones drive of “Dirt” reminds me of Cracker in the verses, the Stones in the chorus. You get the picture. Longtime friends and fans will appreciate the inclusion of a tender rendition of “The Log,” a Beatlesque, Mellotron-decorated animal allegory that has been part of the fellows’ live set longer back than I can remember. Soporific in the best sense, “Snuggling” brings the record to a lush and luminous finish and is one of its real highlights, featuring a contribution from old friend and longtime Andrew Bird collaborator Martin Dosh. Ratboy Jr. celebrates the release of another triumph with a show at Yard Owl Brewery in Gardiner on Sunday, May 19. Admission costs $5 per body. POUGHKEEPSIE’S LITTLE ITALY
Check out the Mount Carmel District’s pasticceria and rosticceria as well as the Festa at the Italian Center
O
ne doesn’t have to stroll far along the streets of Poughkeepsie’s Mount Carmel Little Italy district to come across a bakery or restaurant that reaches back into the century-old culinary traditions brought to the Hudson Valley by Italian emigrants. The Poughkeepsie waterfront saw an influx of émigrés in 1910, who settled around Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, the house of worship built specifically to serve them. Soon the oncepredominantly-Irish enclave began to take on the flavors and aromas of Old World-style Italian cooking. Today the area is culturally mixed, but the heritage of the old country survives in its colorful festivals and favorite eateries, many of which have been family-owned and operated for decades. Centered within Verrazano Boulevard, Mill Street and Mt. Carmel Place, Little Italy was loosely defined by church parish boundaries and the Italian Center, a fraternal organization founded by combining several separate Italian-American clubs that were active in the region. Located in a historically significant, mid-19th-century building on Mill Street, the Italian Center hosts public and private events celebrating Italian culture such as this weekend’s Italian Festival 2019. Beginning Thursday, May 16, and running through Sunday, May 19, the Festa is open to the public and will feature live music – Cruise Control, Midnite Image, Jerry Nicolato, Jungle Love, Roberto Milanese and Angela Bruno and the Chain Gang –along with magicians, balloons, spin art and other fun stuff. See the detailed schedule at
www.theitaliancenter.com/events.html and check it out. And there will be food, of course. What would a Festa be without food? Which brings us to a brief review of all those bakeries and restaurants in the neighborhood… Caffe Aurora, located at 145 Mill Street, is a traditional pasticceria opened in 1941 by Paolo Strippoli. For more than 75 years, succeeding generations of the famiglia have produced cakes, pastries and other authentic Italian desserts, following the patriarch’s efforts to create a little bit of Italy for the region’s tabletops. The story goes that Eleanor Roosevelt’s limousine driver would pull up to Caffe Aurora and fetch her a box of petit fours to take home to Hyde Park. More common clientele could count on finding an array of cookies, biscotti, éclairs, sugared almonds, cakes, tarts and sugar-free and gluten-free cookies as well. An espresso bar cranks out steaming cups of the black elixir, along with those to-die-for Italian ices in 25 rotating flavors: chocolate fudge, cannoli cream, cantaloupe and others. Espresso accoutrements and other gift items adorn the shelves in the decidedly traditional atmosphere. Learn more at www.caffeaurora.com.

La Deliziosa Italian Pastry Shop at 10 Mount Carmel Place offers New York Citystyle pastries without the hassle of going into the City. Since 1974, La Deliziosa has sold the real deal in cannoli, sfogliatelle, biscotti and rum baba to customers who feel that they’ve stepped back in time. Indeed, for 45 years the shop has provided specialty cakes and trays full of Italian baked goods to weddings and parties up and down the Valley. The story goes that one-time dishwasher Frank Cordaro, who eventually took over the business nearly 25 years ago, invented the Cannoli Chip, a delectable made of leftover cannoli shells dipped in cannoli cream, thus taking his place among the more famous Italian inventors and innovators in history. Rossi Rosticceria Deli is a 40-year-old establishment at 45 South Clover Street where hungry customers can find a lavish array of entrées, salads, antipasti and specials to go. You can build your own sandwiches, choosing from a variety of breads, meats and cheeses, toppings and condiments. (Check out the buildyour-own-sandwich photo page of the website at www.rossideli.com/todaysspecials.html.) And the panini options,

made on small or larger focaccia, are mouthwatering. Then there’s Aloy’s at 157 Garden Street, serving the Hudson Valley since 1929, famous for its “square” thin-crust pizza (it’s actually a rectangle). Aloy’s offers free parking to customers visiting the Walkway over the Hudson, too. Amici’s, at 35 Main Street on the riverfront, serves classic and contemporary Italian American fare, prepared by CIA-trained chef/owner Joel Trocino. The seasonal menu and daily specials, served in the casual-butupscale atmosphere, make for a special night out, indeed. Meanwhile, a separate lounge offers music, TV, drinks, casual dining and a game of pool: a great spot for a group party of 30 to 50 people. Milanese, at 115 Main Street, was opened in 1971 by the patriarch of the family, Santino Milanese. A Poughkeepsie landmark for decades, this is where generations of family members have served up classics like veal or chicken parmigiana to eager customers continuously. Simple ingredients, artfully prepared in the old-fashioned way, keep people coming back – not to omit mentioning an $18.95 three-course special on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. With a seating capacity of up to 200 people, Milanese can accommodate birthday parties, communions, retirements and any other event with Old Country family hospitality. Hungry? door screen scene seems to have stabilized. These holdovers from the ’50 and ’60s have been modernizing in a variety of ways – including, in some cases, putting up two or more screens at the same location – while striving to hold onto their vintage charm. Some are upping their culinary game, another reincarnating as a repertory cinema, and one even offers overnight accommodations in the form of a 1967 Airstream trailer. Most of the drive-ins offer double features nightly, with listed starting times approximate, since the first feature can’t really start until it’s fully dark. Make sure you check with the venue before heading out; schedules tend to be more changeable than indoor cinemas. And be aware, if you haven’t visited one since their mid-20th-century heyday, that the times of “one admission price per carload are long gone. Here’s a brief rundown of your choices:

Ticket prices are $9 for adults, $6 for children aged 5 to 11 and free for kids under 4. Greene County Hi-Way Drive-In 10699 Route 9W, Coxsackie $10/$5 518-731-8672 www.hiwaydrivein.com www.facebook.com/hiwaydriveintheatre With four, count ’em, four screens showing all first-run fare, the Hi-Way DriveIn is the biggest multiplex in our region. It’s open weekends only from early April until Memorial Day, then seven nights a week through Labor Day, after which it goes back again to a weekend schedule. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for ages 3 to 11 and are free for children under 3. Greenville Drive-In Outdoor Cinema 10700 Route 32, Greenville $8/$4 (518) 966-2177 www.drivein32.com www.facebook.com/drivein32
The first known open-air motion picture screening happened on June 7, 1917 in the Northern Catskills' town of Schoharie. "Residents would park on Main Street to watch movies projected on a taut sheet stretched across lampposts in front of the imposing stone courthouse," according to the Albany Times-Union. Although that town's outdoor screenings ended in 1930, another Catskills theater, the Greenville Drive-In Outdoor Cinema, began showing films al fresco in 1959. The Greenville Drive-In (sown above) continues its 60th season on Saturday, May 18, with a showing of the screwball comedy gem, Bringing Up Baby. Doors open for food, drinks, cocktails and lawn games at 7 p.m. with live music by Niall Connolly beginning at 7:15 p.m. The Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn classic (shown below) begins at dusk, approximately 8:35 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for kids ages 5-12 and free for little ones under 5. Dogs can view too with a Pup Pass (see drivein32.com for details).
Orange County Warwick Drive-In 5 Warwick Turnpike (Route 21), Warwick $12/$8 (845) 986-4440 www.warwickdrivein.com www.facebook.com/warwickdrivein Built in 1950, this theater was expanded to two screens under new ownership in 1982. It now shows six first-run features each night during the summer season on three outdoor screens. Admission costs $12 for adults, $8 for children aged 4 to 11 and seniors (65+) and is free for children under 4. spring until mid-to-late October, seven nights a week, of mostly family-friendly fare. It also hosts weddings and private parties. Admission costs $11, $8 for veterans and seniors (65+), $6 for kids 5 to 10 years and is free for children under 5. Hyde Park Drive-In 4114 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park $10/$7 (845) 229-8959 http://hydeparkdrivein.com www.facebook.com/hydeparkdrivein This theater, opened in 1950, had a narrow escape from a plan by a developer to build a Wal-Mart on the site in the late 1990s. But local historic preservationists were of the opinion that a parcel of land situated directly across Route 9 from the entrance to the FDR Home and Library Historic Site was not an appropriate place for a big-box store. Scenic Hudson intervened, taking the property off the
market in 2000 and conveying it to the National Park Service in 2011. It may not stay a drive-in theater forever, so enjoy it while you can. The Hyde Park DriveIn is open from mid-April through mid-September, on weekends up until Memorial Day and seven days a week thereafter, rain or shine. Admission costs $10 for adults, $7 for children aged 5 to 11, and is free for children under 5. Overlook Drive-In 126 De Garmo Road, Poughkeepsie $10/$7 (845) 452-3445 http://overlookdrivein.com www.facebook.com/overlookdrivein Owned by the same family as the Hyde Park Drive-In, the Overlook has the same April-to-September season and the same pricing structure: $10 for adults, $7 for children aged 5 to 11 and free for children under 5. It is distinguished by its six-storyhigh screen, the largest in the Tri-State area.

First opened in 1959, the Greenville Drive-In had a close brush with mortality at the advent of the digital age. But new owners with enough funds to replace the projection system took over in 2015, and the following spring saw a swanky reopening party featuring champagne and oysters. It’s the only outdoor cinema in our area to depart from the standard drive-in fare of newly released, big-budget feature films, going for the art-house crowd instead by screening popular classics. For instance, on Saturday, May 18, the place is showing the 1938 Howard Hawks screwball comedy Bringing up Baby, starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant (and a pet leopard). From Thursday to Sunday, May 23 to 26, it’s screening either Footloose, Dirty Dancing or both. Office Space will be shown on May 31 and June 1, Babe on June 7 and 8 and Dazed and Confused on June 14 and 15. Live music is featured at the Saturday shows, and emerging local filmmakers are also welcomed to screen and discuss their newest works several times a season. The on-premises snack shack emphasizes locally sourced foods, and there’s also a Projectionists’ Club Beer Garden featuring local microbrews. Admission costs $8 for adults, $4 for kids ages 5 to 12; kids 4 and younger get in free. – Frances Marion Platt

Spirituality
PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN . (Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank-you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank-you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted.

Loves to cuddle. No other pets, please. ATHENA ; 2-3 year old sweet, independent, affectionate, opinionated black & white cat girl. She was a wonderful mom & her kittens were all adopted. Now it’s her turn to be loved. LEXI ; beautiful tiger cat girl w/a heart of gold! Lexi was adopted, but was bullied by the resident cat, and now finds herself back at the shelter. If you can give this 3-year old sweetheart the quiet, loving home she needs, she’ll thank you every day! DORIAN ; shy, spayed, 2-3 year old female cat who just needs a quiet house to decompress & be loved. Dorian was a lonesome stray. Kittens ARE COMING! LACY ; 7-year old female pittie mix. Very sweet and low energy. She’s a doll! SABRINA ; 4-year old Hound mix girl. She’s very sweet & affectionate. Please- no cats. Dogsmales only & need a “meet & greet”.
