years: 5,003 performances. His biggest Broadway hit, Memphis, won him two Tonys plus a Drama Desk nomination in 2010. The Toxic Avenger was nominated for a Drama Desk award in 2009, and Nice Work If You Can Get It copped a Drama Desk Award plus Tony and Outer Critics’ Circle nominations in 2012 – all of these for outstanding book or score. DiPietro’s second successful play, Over the River and through the Woods, was a comedy, not a musical. It ran OffBroadway for 800 performances from 1998 to 2000, and nowadays, with its cast of six, is a popular vehicle for smaller local theaters. It’s coming to Shadowland Stages in Ellenville on Friday, August 23, and runs through September 8. Nick, the 20-something protagonist of Over the River and through the Woods, has a problem: He has been offered a good job in Seattle, and he has to break the news to his two sets of Italian grandparents in Hoboken, who have been his alternating Sunday-dinner hosts for years. They don’t want him to go, and ply him with food, family stories and a potential girlfriend in their efforts to keep Nick from flying the nest. “Heartwarming is the adjective most

Columbia County Fair begins on August 28 We’re getting late into summer. The light has begun to look autumnal. NFL teams are heading into their third preseason game, and those children possessed of a tragic disposition have begun to mourn the passing of summer. Despair not, however, as fair season still has some kicks left. The 179th Columbia County Fair, for example, kicks off on Wednesday, August 28 and runs through Monday, September 2, Labor Day. Then, all fun is over. Part manure, part gas sports and all country/rock: You know what to expect from county fairs, and you love it. The Columbia is especially rich in the animal department. There are usually Jacob’s rams on display – the oldest breed of sheep in the world – and the Poultry Barn can sometimes show naturally pink chickens. Don’t miss the Painted Pony Rodeo, magic, local bands, acrobats, the Dairy Bar, Demolition Derby, Monster Truck Pull, a talent contest and much more. Headlining this year is triple-gold recording artist Frankie Ballard. Daily hours are Wednesday from noon to 11 p.m. and Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Daily admission costs $10, $15 on Sunday. Children 12 and under always get in free. On Thursday, seniors can enter for half-price until 4 p.m. and youth under 18 are free until 4 p.m.

UPSTATE FILMS TO SCREEN THELMA AND LOUISE OUTDOORS AT GREIG FARM ON SATURDAY

U

pstate Films will screen Thelma and Louise outdoors at Greig Farm in Red Hook on Saturday, August 24 at dusk. The Academy Award-winning film features friends Thelma, a meek housewife played by Geena Davis, and Louise, an independent waitress played by Susan Sarandon, who have grown sick and tired of what they've settled for and decide they need to take a trip. The pair hit the road in Louise's '66 Thunderbird convertible for a three-day vacation with no husbands, no boyfriends and no problems, but things don't go according to plan. Slyly nodding to popular Hollywood outlaw movies such as Easy Rider, Badlands, Bonnie and Clyde and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Callie Khouri's Oscar-winning screenplay, directed by Ridley Scott, struck a worldwide nerve. The farm opens its gates at 6:30 p.m., leaving plenty of time to picnic on site or enjoy the casual gourmet food cooked up by Papa's Best Batch. Tickets cost $8 for Upstate Films members, $10 for non-members. Reservations can be made in advance by visiting https://bpt.me/4308493. Greig Farm is located at 243 Pitcher Lane in Red Hook. Set at the Ashokan Center – a venerable leader in environmentalist education, folk music curation and the preservation of a variety of traditional arts – the Hoot effortlessly combines live music with traditional dances, juggling workshops, crafts, film, locally sourced consumables and some serious talks about pressing issues and solutions. Why, it’s as if they have been doing it for years or something. What makes it all work, however, is the adventurous and well-connected curation of the music lineup. Produced and hosted by folk-roots musicians Mike Merenda and Ruth Ungar Merenda of the Mammals (formerly known as Mike + Ruthy), the Hoots are never content with retro folk purism, though there is always plenty of

the old authentic on hand. The lineups revel in a gloriously global definition of roots and in the contradictions of folk, where it is often the youngsters who are doing it the old way and the oldsters who are trying to make it new. The 2019 Summer Hoot goes down between August 23 and 25, a Fridayto-Sunday span that will be filled with nearly 30 performances and presentations as well as all the on-call activities and attractions that make the Ashokan Center such a…hoot. Mark Mulcahy plays BSP on Thursday

Songwriter Mark Mulcahy may not be a household name, but in the tradition of rock ‘n’ roll’s best-kept secrets, his influence and importance far outstrip his fame. Those who do know (and revere) his work include the likes of Thom Yorke, the National, Michael Stipe and Dinosaur Jr., all of whom contributed Mulcahy covers to Ciao My Shining Star, a 2009 tribute record. Mulcahy is most known as the frontman of the seminal Boston band of the ‘80s, Miracle Legion. To another generation, he will always be beloved as the leader of Polaris, the band featured on Nickelodeon’s cult hit The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Mulcahy isn’t dwelling in either past, however. The Gus is his sixth solo outing and the record he is supporting when he hits BSP in Kingston on Thursday, August 22. The New Paltz smart-pop quintet the Sweet Clementines open. Our region is rich in outdoor art environments that double as concert sites, from Opus 40 at Saugerties to Manitoga in Garrison. In partnership with the World Music Institute, Storm King presents a summer afternoon of Carnatic Indian classical music on Sunday, August 25. A part of the H. finalist for the 2018 National Book Award in Nonfiction, Victoria Johnson appears for a talk and a reading at the Mountain Top Arboretum in Tannersville on Sunday, September 1. The subject of Johnson’s book is the rather miraculous life of Dr. David Hosack. American Eden: David Hosack, Botany and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic explores the multifarious achievements of a man admired by Jefferson and Madison, and personal physician to both Hamilton and Burr as well as a witness to their duel. Hosack was a visionary public health advocate, a Columbia professor and the founder of the nation’s first botanical garden, upon which ground Radio City Music Hall stands today. Victoria Johnson is currently an associate professor of Urban Policy and Planning at Hunter College of CUNY, where she teaches on the history of notfor-profits, philanthropy and New York City. She holds a doctorate in Sociology from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Yale. This talk costs $10 and is free to Arboretum members.

Sojourner Truth statue to be erected in Central Park Her figure will be added to a previously planned sculpture of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton

When she’s not writing fiction, hiking or gardening, part-time Woodstocker Erica Obey has the enviable gig of teaching courses on mystery fiction and Arthurian romance at Fordham University. She’s currently promoting her latest novel, The Horseman’s Word, which posits a fanciful, sinister plot behind the New York City draft riots that pitted Irish immigrants against black freedmen in 1863. It is July of 1865, and in Saratoga Springs, the wealthy racegoers wish, in the words of General Daniel Sickles, who left a leg at Gettysburg, “to let bygones be bygones” and put the war behind them. Yet Rose Adair is hard-pressed to forget Tamerlane Fallon, the Englishman she last saw being led off to be hanged as a Confederate spy. When he is pulled from Congress Spring, after apparently having killed a man over a mysterious smuggled artifact, Rose is forced to sort through conflicting tales of Fenian rebels and the occult Society of the Horseman’s Word,

passions, however, they could not have been more different. Antagonistic in their beliefs, the two yet shared the common struggle of intelligent and powerful women dedicating their lives to politics and service across the 20th century. he Hudson Valley’s most renowned native daughter, Sojourner Truth, whose seven-foot bronze statue is slated to be erected on the Highland side of the Walkway over the Hudson next spring, will soon have her likeness enshrined in New York City’s Central Park as well. The figure of Truth will be added to a previously planned sculpture of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to be installed alongside the park’s Literary Walk, in response to criticism that the original version of the statue failed to represent the contributions of women of color to the women’s suffrage movement. The Monumental Women’s Statue Fund, a group of activists who include a great-great-granddaughter of Stanton, raised funding to put up the statue in part to rectify the disproportionately tiny number of public monuments to historical women in New York City – only five statues of 150 total: Joan of Arc and Eleanor Roosevelt in Riverside Park, Harriet Tubman in Harlem, Gertrude Stein in Bryant Park and Golda Meir two blocks away. Of the many statues in Central Park, the only three that currently depict female figures are all fictional: Alice in Wonderland, Shakespeare’s Juliet and the allegorical Angel of the Waters. Artist Meredith Bergmann’s initial design for the statue appeared to be inspired by a famous photograph of the two suffragists, with a standing Anthony showing a document to Stanton, seated at a writing-desk. Names of 22 other women’s suffrage pioneers, seven of them black, were to be inscribed on a scroll unfurling from the desk toward a ballot box. During the Public Design Commission’s review of the proposal, some activists criticized the design, including Gloria Steinem, who called the representation of black suffrage leaders “not enough” and said that Anthony and Stanton appeared to be “standing on the names of these other women.” The scroll was eliminated in a revised design approved in March, and several commissioners urged the Fund to diversify its membership. This month, Fund president Pam Elam announced the inclusion of Truth in the final design of the sculpture, which has not yet been released. Bergman told the commissioners that Truth, a noted orator, would be shown giving a speech. Unveiling of the monument to women’s suffrage is planned to occur in 2020 to mark the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment. The 15-foot-tall bronze statue will be positioned on the Mall across from that of the 19th-century American poet Fitz-Greene Halleck, between 67th and 68th Street.

Rediscover Woodstock artist Doris Lee

W

hen people write about the eminent visual artists associated with the Town of Woodstock since the founding of the Byrdcliffe Colony in 1902, it’s easy for the reader to get the impression that nearly all of them were male. Here as elsewhere in art history, it takes some digging to find out who the talented women were. Among the most accomplished of these – and by some accounts, one of the most successful female American artists of the Depression era – was Doris Lee. Her adopted hometown hasn’t given Lee a one-woman show since 1984, the year after her death, at the Woodstock Artists Association. But the National Museum of Women in the Arts devoted a retrospective exhibition to her work in 2014/15, “Doris Lee: American Painter and Illustrator,” and included Lee in four earlier shows. Manhattan gallerist Deedee Wigmore , who has probably done more than anyone to ensure that Lee’s oeuvre is still seen and appreciated, is now serving as curator of her estate. Since Lee’s long painting and printmaking career spanned many of the 20th century’s artistic movements and styles, Wigmore has found works of hers appropriate to include in shows and collections focused on Realism, Precisionism and Modernism. “Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee” will be coming to the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Pennsylvania in 2020. Born in Aledo, Illinois, Doris Emrick studied art and philosophy at Rockford College. Upon graduation in 1927, she married Russell Werner Lee, an engineer who later became a noted photographer with the Farm Security Administration. During their honeymoon year abroad in Italy and France, Lee studied painting, and she later returned to Paris for lessons with the Cubist painter André Lhote. She also studied with the American Impressionist/Ashcan School painter Ernest Lawson at the Kansas City Art Institute, and in San Francisco, at the California School of Fine Arts with Arnold Blanch, whom she later married following

her 1939 divorce. Lee worked for a time in a New York studio on East 14th Street and discovered Woodstock, where she soon settled. Blanch joined her and went on to teach for many years at the Art Students League. Lee’s paintings were exhibited in the first Whitney Biennial exhibition in 1932, but her widest early fame came when she won when her painting Thanksgiving won the Art Institute of Chicago’s prestigious Logan Medal of the Arts in 1935, four

years after she moved to Woodstock, and was acquired for the Institute’s permanent collection. Ironically, the donor of the prize, Josephine Logan, disliked the painting, which featured rather caricatured rural characters preparing a holiday meal in a style suggestive both of WPA-era social realism and of the homespun sentimentality that made Norman Rockwell’s illustrations so popular with the public. Logan was so incensed that she founded a group called

the Society for Sanity in Art in protest of the Art Institute’s decision. Americana was hot during the Depression, though, and Lee was soon being offered commissions from the US Treasury Department to paint murals for the General Post Office in Washington, DC (now the Clinton Federal Building) and the Summerville, Georgia Post Office. In 1937, the Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired Catastrophe, her painting of the Hindenburg Disaster, for its permanent collection. She was also invited to exhibit in the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Life magazine hired her as an illustrator, sending her on jaunts to Morocco, Cuba and Mexico, and also to paint scenes of offscreen interactions among actors on Hollywood movie sets. Other highprofile illustration works included a James Thurber book, The Great Quillo, and The Rodgers and Hart Songbook, commissioned by Richard Rodgers himself. She also painted scenes from Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, including Carousel and Oklahoma! Lee left behind hundreds of paintings of scenes of rural life: people hoeing vegetables or picking apples, cooking or sewing, taking a tea break on a porch or attending a country wedding, maypole dancers, a girl practicing archery, a woman – black in one version, white in another – napping on an iron bedstead outdoors on a hot afternoon. But she started out with an inclination toward the abstract, and in the latter decades of her career her depictions became less self-consciously “folksy,” flatter, more gesturally concise, letting areas of color do more of the work. Even though the paintings remained representational, usually including human forms, individual detail receded in importance to the point where, in several depictions of groups of bathers, it’s unclear whether or not they are nude or clothed, male or female. She did some landscapes as well, but only a few recognizably depict Woodstock and its environs. For health reasons, Lee retired from painting in the late 1960s. She and Blanch

Perils of space Project Apollo had a million things that could have gone wrong

W

ith Apollo anniversary celebrations still fresh in our minds, let’s salute those brave space pioneers by remembering the unique risks of travel beyond our planet. In 2002, while researching the upcoming 35thanniversary Apollo book I was writing for a major publisher, I got some real surprises about how dangerous that project really was. In the early ’60s, when engineers had asked Bob Gilruth, director of the Manned Spacecraft Center, and Walt Williams, the Project Mercury director, what kind of security and reliability should be engineered into the new Apollo program, they got two very different answers. Williams announced that he wanted to make the risk of astronaut death one in a million. Engineers present at that meeting kept straight faces out of politeness, but knew that such a level of redundancy and security simply could not be accomplished. Even airline passengers of the day did not enjoy that degree of safety. Merely to attempt such risk-aversion would delay the Moon program by years. “How about three nines?” Gilruth suggested. And this was accepted: The success odds were to be 999 out of 1,000. Spacecraft systems, subsystems and rockets would be designed so that each astronaut faced only a one-in-a-thousand chance of not making it back alive. That was the official engineering criterion. The “inside” truth, however, is that few at NASA really believed that this degree of safety had ever actually been achieved. (And unfortunately, in the fullness of time, they were proven right.) Nearly everyone expected an eventual fatal accident. There simply was too much that could go wrong. It wasn’t merely Murphy’s Law. The Saturn rocket alone contained nearly a million parts, along with tons of flammable kerosene and explosive hydrogen. The Command Module had another half-million parts. Already the space program had seen its share of disconcerting mishaps, as when a cover had inadvertently been left on a piece of equipment, causing the 1965 Gemini 6 launch to shut down after the engines had already started to fire and the massive rocket was an inch off the ground. How could absolutely nobody, of the 420,000 people working on the program, screw up in some significant way? Was it even possible? Very early on, engineers and planners identified which systems or subsystems simply could not be allowed to fail. For example, the single engine of the Service Module would have to function for the astronauts to leave lunar orbit. Unless they could increase their speed by at least 2,000 miles per hour at that time, they simply could not come home.

Nearly everyone expected an eventual fatal accident. There simply was too much that could go wrong.

wintered in Clearwater, Florida up until his death in 1968 – her primitivist Florida paintings, which suggest the influence of Caribbean folk art, are worthy of a show in themselves – and it was there that Lee died in 1983. In addition to the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Met, Lee’s work is also represented at the National Gallery of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. – Frances Marion Platt

The single engine of the Lunar Module ascent stage would also have to fire, or else the men would remain to die of suffocation on the lunar surface. The parachute system would also have to deploy, or else the astronauts would receive fatal g-forces when they hit the ocean at 350 miles an hour. The engineering philosophy employed to ensure that critical systems would always work was to use the simplest possible technology and then build in redundancy wherever possible. For example, the truly critical engines would use a hypergolic fuel mixture of hydrazine and nitrogen tetraoxide. When these two liquids come in contact with each other, they ignite spontaneously. No ignition system is required, nor any spark, nor even an electricity source. The next safety step is to store the two fuel components in tanks with nylon bladders. Helium gas, released from a special tank into the space between the fuel tank and its bladder, squeezes the fuel and drives it toward the combustion chamber. No fuel pump is required, just the release of inert gas. Ball-valves also driven by gas pressure open and close to release the two fuels. Duplicate valves can take over if any fail. Simple. And it worked every time. In fact, it was hard even to imagine how these engines could fail. But NASA insiders, and the astronauts themselves, also knew of Apollo’s weak spots, some of which would produce fatalities and mission aborts throughout the decade. Such perils are sobering to remember for those who now push for manned missions to Mars. – Bob Berman Want to know more? rican Americans specifically in mind. But, as in any truly classic work of literature, his observation can be generalized, even universalized to all humankind. Bernadette Fox, the protagonist of Maria Semple’s satirical 2012 epistolary novel Where’d You Go, Bernadette and of Richard Linklater’s new movie based on it, is seriously suffering the effects of a dream deferred. So, by extension, are her husband El-

family whose every challenge is exacerbated by being black and/or poor. They live in an enormous house in an upscale Seattle suburb. Workaholic Elgie (Billy Crudup) started out as a film animator who sold a gadget to Microsoft and is now a hotshot software developer. Bernadette (Cate Blanchett) was a sustainable architecture prodigy who won a slew of professional awards and a MacArthur “genius grant” for designing and building the 20 Mile House, using only materials that could be sourced within a 20-mile radius. Both came from families who could afford to send them to prep school, and now their daughter has been accepted at Choate. The fact that theirs are First World problems works against the emotional accessibility of this family, whom we meet on the verge of fracture. Practically every conflict they have, it’s plain, would be a thousand times worse if they weren’t white and wealthy. Actually, it would be a different set of problems altogether, considering how shallow, materialistic and competitive their equally white wealthy neighbors are, and the parents of Bee’s schoolmates. And yet one need not belong to their class, nor aspire to it, to feel for them as their story unspools. In the novel, Bernadette is described as suffering from agoraphobia. It’s less clear in the film what diagnosis of

mental illness best fits her. Certainly the people who surround her, with the sole exception of her daughter, are constantly searching for a label. Extreme social anxiety seems like a fair description, bipolar disorder an outside chance. But are these really irrational mood swings? Or is Bernadette simply energized when she has a meaningful project, depressed when she does not? Focused intently on raising a child born with a life-threatening heart defect, she has not worked at her profession in more than a decade, is medicated up the wazoo, hates the company of people outside her immediate family and rarely leaves the house, relying on dictated notes to a remote personal assistant in India to manage her affairs. The one foray outside the home that excites Bernadette is a planned family trip to Antarctica, a treat long promised to Bee as a reward for good grades. Under what circumstances she gets there constitutes the backbone of this tale’s narrative arc – especially once Elgie and Bee are forced to cope with her sudden disappearance. The story’s heart lies in the bond between mother and daughter, their mutual adoration, the sacrifices they make and the lies they tell themselves in order to live up to each other’s expectations. There’s a sort of shiny wall around them, with the baffled, well-meaning father turning to work and other distractions when he

finds this female symbiosis too daunting to penetrate. Bernadette’s character journey is propelled by a series of disasters, largely involving her antagonistic relationship with next-door neighbor Audrey (Kristin Wiig), that force her both to dig deeper into the pain of her own past – notably the purchase and demolition of the 20 Mile House by a despicable neighbor back in LA – and to admit that she sometimes does need other people. Most of all, she needs to create: a message most clearly articulated by her architecture school mentor, portrayed by Laurence Fishburne. He’s a guy who knows how to listen, and shows up at a time when Bernadette is feeling unseen, unheard and useless. There’s plenty of fine acting on display in this movie, but the screen truly lights up whenever Fishburne or Emma Nelson, the brilliant young newcomer who plays Bee, takes center stage. Blanchett, as usual, handles a demanding role with aplomb. Though this performance is far from a career best, it’s fun enough to watch her channel a woman who knows that nobody likes her and doesn’t give a crap…mostly. It would appear that Linklater spent most of his production budget on the actors. Where’d You Go, Bernadette is unimpressive on the technical end; scenes on boats and in Antarctica tend to look like they were are actually shot on soundstages with cheap CGI backdrops. And the editing is often shoddy, resulting in distracting continuity errors, especially in scenes where several people are seated around a table having a conversation. More than once, the camera cuts away from the speaker for a reaction shot, then comes back to find their arm or head not quite in the position one would

have expected it to have been a couple of heartbeats later. Sandra Adair has been Linklater’s editor on every one of his films since 1993; maybe this is an artistic decision, or maybe he doesn’t think to ask for more. Overall, Where’d You Go, Bernadette is a worthier movie than its limp Rotten Tomatoes rating would seem to suggest. The three main characters put a lot of heart into trying to save a family unit that has sailed into treacherous waters, and they ultimately become, for all their flaws (and privileges), relatable human beings. – Frances Marion Platt

The show is a 20-year photographic chronicle of Wogan’s light installations, which have illuminated abandoned industrial structures and discarded modes of transportation in Europe, Asia and across the United States. 8am-5pm Industrial Spirits - Fundraiser to help Support the Wogan Family. Artist, Robert Wogan presents Industrial Spirits, A Photographic Retrospective of Things Forgotten. The show is a 20-year photographic chronicle of Wogan’s light installations, which have illuminated abandoned industrial structures and discarded modes of transportation in Europe, Asia and across the United States. Wogan’s installations shed light on the precariousness of the environment that surrounds us everyday and question how something of such purpose could be left for entropic demise. Industrial Spirits will range in scale from 6 to 8 foot photographs to smaller print replications. Exhibited in Hurley Motor Sports 2779 Route 209, through September, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8am to 5pm. The show is free and open to the public. Help is needed at this time for the Wogan family - as they navigate Robert (the dad and the artist’s) bout with stage 4 cancer.

of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank-you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank-you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted.
