A

rguably the mid-Hudson’s premier summer performing arts showcase, Bard SummerScape brings topnotch performers in the fields of music – including classical, opera and cabaret – as well as theater, dance and cinema to the Bard College campus for seven busy weeks each summer. The extravaganza is organized around the Bard Music Festival, which each year examines the life, work and cultural milieu of a single composer through concerts of both orchestral and chamber music, pre-performance talks and panel discussions. This year’s focus will be on Igor Stravinsky. The theme of Weekend One, August 9 to 11, will be “Becoming Stravinsky: From St. Petersburg to Paris”; Weekend Two, August 16 to 18, will spotlight “Stravinsky Reinvented: From Paris to Los Angeles.” Ticket prices for Bard Music Festival events, many of which star Bard’s resident ensemble the American Symphony Orchestra, range from $25 to $75. SummerScape typically kicks off with performances by a world-class dance company, and this year is no exception: The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and SITI Company will present A Rite, a new work celebrating the centennial of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, in the Sosnoff Theater at the Richard B. Fischer Center for the Performing Arts, on July 6 and 7. Ticket prices

range from $25 to $55. Next comes a major theatrical production from an internationally renowned director and cast. The stage production for 2013 will be the world premiere of János Szász and Gideon Lester’s adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita, with Szász directing. Tickets will go for $30 for previews on July 11 and 12 and $45 for regular performances on July 13 and 14 and 17 through 21, all staged in Theater Two. This year’s full-scale opera production at SummerScape will be the US stage premiere of Sergey Taneyev’s musical setting of Aeschylus’ Oresteia, directed by Thaddeus Strassberger. Tickets go for $30 to $90 for performances in the Sosnoff The-

ater on July 26, 28 and 31 and August 2 and 4. The 2013 Bard SummerScape Film Festival, “Stravinsky’s Legacy and Russian Émigré Cinema,” will run from July 12 through August 3 and include such early Russian and French film classics as The Red Shoes, The Lower Depths, Pierrot le fou and Orpheus. They are screened in the Jim Ottaway, Jr. Film Center, and single tickets cost $12. Hipsters at SummerScape flock to the intimate, mirror-spangled confines of the Spiegeltent for cabaret performances, food, drink and dancing throughout the festival, opening with celebrated comedian Sandra Bernhard on July 5. Powerhouse Theater Nipping at the heels of Bard SummerScape in terms of sheer scope and star-power is the Powerhouse Theater, a collaboration between Vassar and New York Stage and Film that presents stage works in various phases of development, from early stages of “workshopping” to full-blown productions. This is your chance to see the creative process in action, catching dramas and musicals by heavy-hitters in the field before they hit the Great White Way.

Probably the biggest draw of the 29th Powerhouse season will be a concert reading of Bright Star, a brand-new musical set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell and directed by Walter Bobbie. Running July 12 to 14, this will be one of two Martel Musical Workshops to be presented at the Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film on the Vassar campus. The other, onstage July 26 to 28, is a new musical inspired by The Brooklyn Hero Supply Company, based on characters created by Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman. It’s directed by Michael Mayer, with a book by Simon Rich and music and lyrics by Peter Lerman. Tickets for the Martel Musicals cost $30. On the Mainstage at Powerhouse Theater will be two fully staged and designed works-in-progress: from June 26 to July 7, Downtown Race Riot by Seth Zvi Rosenfeld, directed by Scott Elliott; and from July 17 to 28, When the Lights Went Out by Mozhan Marnò, directed by Kate Whoriskey. Tickets for Mainstage productions cost $40. Semi-staged Inside Look workshops at the Susan Stein Shiva Theater this summer will include Found by Hunter Bell and Lee Overtree, based on the Found books and magazines by Davy Rothbart, with music and lyrics by Eli Bolin. It will be directed by Lee Overtree and run from July 12 to 14. Mother of Invention by James Lecesne, directed by Michael Wilson, will run from July 19 to 21. Inside Look tickets cost $25. The season will also include two weeklong Readings Festivals, running June 21 to 23 and July 26 to 28, for which admission is free by advance reservation. Among these readings will be The Hamilton Mixtape by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Yellow Kingdom by Patricia Wettig. And the Powerhouse Theater Apprentice Company will present free Soundpainting performances at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center and free classical theater works by Shakespeare, Aeschylus and García Lorca outdoors at the Vassar Farm and Ecological Preserve. Casting of these stage works had not yet been announced as of presstime, but expect at least a few big names. For more information on specific performances, dates and times, or for tickets and reservations, call the Powerhouse box office at (845) 437-5599 or visit http://powerhouse.vassar. edu/boxoffice. Shadowland Theatre This charming old vaudeville venue in downtown Ellenville has recently completed a full renovation, and its high-quality theatre productions boast Actors Equity casts, often including famous names.

The first show of Shadowland’s 2013 summer season will be The Outgoing Tide by Bruce Graham, a family drama set in a weekend cottage on Chesapeake Bay. It runs from May 31 to June 16.

From June 21 to July 7 you can catch the New York premiere of John Cariani’s bittersweet romantic comedy Love/Sick, directed by the author. July 12 through August 4 brings a revival of the classic farce Boeing Boeing by Marc Camoletti, in which an architect juggles simultaneous engagements to three airline flight attendants – until the invention of a new, faster jet engine wreaks havoc with their schedules. In 2010 Shadowland had a hit in The Marvelous Wonderettes, a musical about a 1950s girl group by Roger Bean; now they’re back and growing up in Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns. It

Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival It wouldn’t be summer without outdoor Shakespeare productions, and the most spectacular and long-running such program in our neck of the Forest of Arden is the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, whose performances take advantage of the glorious setting of Boscobel on the banks of the Hudson in Garrison. On the schedule this summer for HVSF’s 27th season are the Bard’s ultimate tragedy King Lear, directed by Terrence O’Brien; Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel The Three Musketeers, directed by Christopher V. Edwards; and Shakespeare’s challenging “problem play All’s Well That Ends Well, directed by Russell Treyz.

The three plays run in repertory, alternating performances throughout the season. Ticket prices range from $27 to $75, with discounts for seniors and kids and a special program called the Revelers to entice “Millennialsâ€? aged 21 to 35. This production of The Three Musketeers was made possible by a $20,000 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, also with an eye to appealing to this younger segment of the audience. Bird-on-a-Cliff Theater Company Another way to enjoy Shakespeare outdoors in the summer lies closer to home and considerably cheaper: Bird-on-a-Cliff ’s charming, relatively low-budget performances in the picnic-blanket atmosphere of the pastoral Comeau Property right on the edge of downtown Woodstock. Admission is by donation, with $5 the suggested rate, so you can’t beat this for a fine afternoon’s entertainment.

This summer, Bird-on-a-Cliff will assail one of Shakespeare’s rarely performed late romances, The Winter’s Tale, perhaps best-known for its famous stage direction “Exit, pursued by a bear.” It will run from July 12 to August 4, directed by Nicola Sheara. The second 2013 production is André Grego-

Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival’s performances take place at Boscobel on the banks of the Hudson in Garrison ry’s famous Manhattan Project version of Alice in Wonderland, directed by David Aston-Reese. Woodstock Playhouse Risen from the ashes on the site where it was first built in 1928, at the gateway to the arts colony town where Route 375 runs into Route 212, the Woodstock Playhouse was one of the original theatres in the US to offer a summer stock season. And it’s

still doing that with class, offering four high-quality productions of popular shows each summer – mostly revivals of Broadway hits.

This year, the Playhouse will be presenting Les Misérables from June 20 to 30; Fiddler on the Roof from July 11 to 21; Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues from July 25 to 27; and The Who’s Tommy from August 1 to 10. Opening night on June 20 will be a 75th anniversary gala featuring a reception, dinner and a silent auction, with tickets going for $130 with dinner and $79 without; admission prices for all other performances range from $32 to $40. Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice Who knew, before this Festival came to be in 2009, that the area around Phoenicia was crawling with opera singers? But those hills are alive

This year’s Festival of the Voice kicks off on the evening of August 1 with a Gospel Celebration, followed by three days and two evenings of lectures, master classes and performances, including full-scale productions of Verdi’s Requiem and Rigoletto. The Festival’s definition of the voice as something worth celebrating has expanded to include, this year, such realms as Latin jazz and bossa nova, Sephardic music, spoken word and storytelling, the art of the cantor in Jewish liturgy and three performances of Terrence McNally’s play about the über-diva Maria Callas. The venues for these varied events, all within easy walking distance of one another, include the Phoenicia Parish Field, the Phoenicia United Methodist Church, the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and the Shandaken Theatrical Society Playhouse. Admission is free to a few events; ticket prices otherwise range from $5 to $55 per event, with a $350 Da Capo Pass getting you into absolutely everything; tickets for all events cost $5 for kids age 18 and under. PianoSummer For 19 years now, famed Russian émigré pianist Vladimir Feltsman has been organizing PianoSummer, which combines a summer institute for upand-coming young pianists from all over the world with a festival of performances by a distinguished faculty and visiting artists, on the SUNY-New Paltz campus. It culminates with the Jacob Flier Piano Competition, named after one of Feltsman’s mentors. Most of the associated events – even master classes – are open to the general public.

PianoSummer 2013 kicks off with a Faculty Gala on July 6 at McKenna Theatre. Last year’s Flier Competition winner, Hidemi Minagawa, will give a recital on July 10 at Shepard Recital Hall. Guest artists Jonathan Biss and Alexander Korsantia will perform at McKenna on July 13 and 20, respectively. And the yet-to-be-determined 2013 Flier Competition winner will front the Hudson Valley Philharmonic in the season-ending Symphony Gala on July 26, also at McKenna.

The summer 2013 concert schedule starts with country superstar Dwight Yoakam on July 6, followed by Manhattan Transfer on July 13, the Doobie Brothers on July 20 and the Belleayre Festival Opera presenting George Bizet’s Carmen on July 27 (okay, so it’s not all pop).

On the first weekend in August, you can catch a triple threat of hot Latin sounds with Sammy Figueroa and His Latin Jazz Explosion on the 1st, the Pedrito Martinez Group featuring Ariacne Trujillo on the 2nd and Paquito D’Rivera and the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band on the 3rd. Mount Tremper Arts 2013 Summer Festival Mount Tremper Arts is only a six-year-old organization, but to give a full overview of its 11-week Summer Festival could easily fill up this whole Explore Hudson Valley supplement. Contemporary dance, music, performance and spoken word are the areas of focus, bolstered by artsy barbecue nights. Admission to most events costs $20. Season tickets, priced at $95, provide access to all events including the Art-B-Qs.

The schedule begins on June 15 with choreographer Abigail Levine’s Distance Measures. Performed in darkness, lit only by moving LED candles, borrows elements from mathematical models of chaotic systems. On June 21 and 22, the award-winning International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and the Troupe perform the world premiere of Mesh, about vulnerability, connection and fundamental aspects of shared experience. The season’s first Art-B-Q event on June 29, Pork and Poetry! features spoken-word performances by Craig Dworkin and Mónica de la Torre. On July 6, dancer Michelle Boulé and cellist Okkyung Lee push sonic and choreographic boundaries to the edge in BREAK>Urge>Imprint, an atmospheric work rooted in improvisation. July 12 and 13 see the world premiere of Poe, composed by Marcos Balter and performed by Claire Chase and Svet Stoyanov. Paul Lazar performs When a Priest Marries a Witch: an Artist Talk by Suzanne Bocanegra on July 20. On July 27, Karinne Keithley Syers will perform her work-inprogress Another Tree Dance. The quintessential city-escape summer day trip is a visit to a county fair, and Ulster County’s 144-year-old tradition still hangs onto that oldtimey flavor. It has all the requisite attractions of a larger fair – midway rides, carnival games, livestock and produce competitions, equestrian events, tractor pulls, racing pigs, country music acts, fireworks, junky fair food and so on – but on a manageable human scale. Your family can see most everything in a long day and come home tired but happy. The County Fair opens at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, which is Carload Night: $40 admission for the whole crew. 8/31-9/2: Woodstock/New Paltz Arts & Crafts Fair in New Paltz This long-running convocation of juried artisans and purveyors of fine handcrafted merchandise always has something new to view, and this year’s innovation is a concentration on hands-on crafts demonstrations, curated by the Catskill Mountain Artisan Guild. The vendors will surely be keeping their fingers crossed for less stormy weather than their Memorial Day weekend outing at the County Fairgrounds. Fair hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Labor Day. The Ulster County Fairgrounds are located at 249 Libertyville Road, on the west side of the Wallkill from New Paltz. Admission costs $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and is free for kids aged 12 and under. You can find a $1 discount coupon, along with lots of other info,

Brewers of craft beers have also been added to the roster of late. 9/15: Taste of New Paltz at the Ulster County Fairgrounds One of the mostly highly anticipated events in southern Ulster County each year is Taste of New Paltz, now in its 23rd year. Dozens of restaurants and caterers from the area set up shop at the County Fairgrounds to serve tapas-sized portions of their specialties. You pay a modest entry fee and then buy one-dollar chits that can be traded for small servings of food – typically at $1 to $3 apiece. The idea is to sample lots of delicacies, rather than to fill up on any one thing, and get ideas for what restaurants you’ll want to check out for dinner in the foreseeable future. It’s sort of a culinary whirlwind world tour. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., but be warned: Those not arriving on the early side may find themselves disappointed that the most desirable items have sold out early. The Ulster County Fairgrounds, located at 249 Libertyville Road on the west side of the Wallkill from New Paltz, offer ample free parking. 9/28: Cauliower Festival in Margaretville September is for foodies in the Hudson Valley, seemingly, and here’s another event designed to tantalize the palate, this time with a hundred different delicious ways to prepare broccoli’s paler cousin. Margaretville was once a hotbed of America’s cauliflower-growing industry, and the tenth annual Cauliflower Festival has a mission of “celebrating farming, cooking and culture in the past, present and future of the Catskill Mountains.â€? Besides a cauliflower recipe contest and food sampling, the event features a Tractor Parade, a Historical Society exhibit, timber framing and haybaling demos, gardening workshops, live old-timey music and clogging performances. There will also be plenty of kids’ activities, including a petting zoo and zipline, pony and horse-drawn carriage rides. The Cauliflower Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and entry is free. It takes place in the Village of Margaretville Pavilion, on Bridge Street behind the supermarket. For more info visit http://cauliflowerfestival.com.

on this last weekend of the summer tourism season. You’ll never know that there were so many different varieties of garlic to choose from until you’ve visited the Garlic Marketplace, or so many different kinds of dishes that can be flavored with the stinking rose – yes, even garlic ice cream – until you’ve patronized the food vendors. There are master gardeners teaching workshops on how best to grow garlic, and garlic cooking demos by professional chefs who will, with any luck, include Saugerties celebrity Ric Orlando. There’s plenty of live music, and don’t miss the opportunity to have your picture taken with Mr. Garlic. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission costs $10 at the gate; in advance, you can get tickets from a variety of local vendors for $7 for adults, $3 for seniors. Kids under age 12 get in for free. orking through this thorough-but-by-no-meanscomprehensive compendium of outdoor music in the Hudson Valley, one word kept coming up again and again: “festival.” We live in the age of the outdoor festival and, myopia and Hudson Valley-centrism notwithstanding, we seem to live in the world capital of the music festival as well, or at least one of them. Mountain Jam, Clearwater, Falcon Ridge and Grey Fox are top-tier national and international mega-festivals in their respective genres. Maverick in Woodstock and the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice virtually invented their genres. The Mount Tremper Summer Arts Festival finds a hive of world-class, cutting-edge, subversive and avant-garde art bustling all summer long in the middle of the Catskills – enough urban smarts and revolutionary cachet to have Bard looking over its shoulder. What’s up with that?

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts The indoor/outdoor pavilion at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, affectionately called “the shed,” is where the big names go to rock. Actually, the venue’s summer programming is diverse and festive, featuring the obligatory visit from the Dave Matthews Band (who seem to be the house band at all the sheds) on July 2, a couple of shows meant to remind you how big modern country music really is (Luke Bryan on August 23, Tim McGraw on July 26), and a bicontinental classic rock dream team with Bad Company and Lynyrd Skynyrd on July 27. Maverick Concerts Woodstock’s Maverick Concert Series is approaching 100 years as one of the most challenging and imaginative serious chamber music programs anywhere. In recent years, it has relaxed the definition of “serious” to include serious jazz and children’s music; but range and outsider, maverick thinking are Maverick’s calling card. This summer’s series is jam-packed, featuring a focus on the works of Benjamin Britten and a bevy of performances by world-class string ensembles, including the Shanghai Quartet on Sunday, July 7, the Jupiter String

Utopian thinker Hervey White headed up a crew of artists and other volunteers to build the famous Maverick “music chapel” in 1916

Clearwater Festival When Outside Magazine declared the Clearwater Festival “one of the top four music festivals in the US,” it weren’t no joke. Clearwater is consistently one of the most thoughtfully curated, adventurous and culturally purposeful festivals anywhere. While Clearwater has moved far beyond its folk origins and auspices, this year Pete Seeger returns as a headliner in what should be a special and mistyeyed performance. Meanwhile, a few other acts you might have heard of will be around as well: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Son Volt, Judy Collins, Hot Tuna (acoustic), Kris Kristofferson, Tift Merritt, Jason Isbell, Jill Sobule and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.

Spiegeltent is more ornate and involved than many Baroque churches and more psychedelic than anything that will happen at Mountain Jam this year.

Bard is a world apart. The hamlet in which it supposedly hunkers – Annandale-on-Hudson – seems more ruse than community: a beard community, if you will, to lend a patina of the mundane and a carbon-based, zip-coded legitimacy to this advanced and beneficent alien outpost. “SummerScape” is aptly named: a festival apart, foreign as the Moon but right here. Each year the

Pete Seeger (above) will headline at the Clearwater Festival on June 15-16, along with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Son Volt, Judy Collins, Hot Tuna, Kris Kristofferson, Tift Merritt, Jason Isbell and Jill Sobule.

Hunter Mountain Festivals This ski slope hosts more than jam. All summer long, festivals cater to specific communities of interest in the stunning mountain environment. The Taste of Country invades the hill on June 13 through 15, featuring a few modest names, like Willie Nelson and Family, Lady Antebellum, Trace Adkins and a host of others traditional and new: http://tasteofcountryfestival.com. The Alps Festival takes over on August 10 and 11, and the International Celtic Festival on August 17 and 18. For more information on all of Hunter’s summer offerings, visit www.huntermtn.com.

Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival We are living in a bluegrass renaissance, mostly because this musical community and fanbase understands that necessary balance between tradition and progression better than most. When the revolutionaries and the progressives – like Béla Fleck and Chris Thile – are also keepers of the old ways, you know that you are on to something. Grey Fox Bluegrass in Oak Hill features a world-class lineup of pickers and grinners. This year highlights the heaviest of heavies – Thile, Jerry Douglas, Del McCoury – and ventures off-center frequently with other kinds of popular and esteemed roots explorers such as the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Hudson Valley Bach Festival Why should rock and folk get all the festival love? They don’t. Annually for 14 years, Cornwall and Poughkeepsie honor Johann Sebastian Bach: Bach the patriarch, Bach the composer who both embodies and transcends the Baroque ideals, one of the big three composers who maybe gains an edge over Ludwig and Wolfgang when you factor in the great composers whom he fathered. The thoughtful fourpart program features a youth concert and a Main Event on Saturday and – in keeping with the way that J. S. buttered his bread – a bunch of Bachcentric Sunday-morning church services, followed by an afternoon chamber concert at Cornwall Presby-

terian Church. Hudson Valley Bach Fest, June 15-16, Cornwall Presbyterian Church, 222 Hudson Street, Cornwall-onHudson; Christ Episcopal Church, 20 Carroll Street, Poughkeepsie; (845) 485-1648, www.hudsonvalleysocietyformusic.org/bachfest.htm.

The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice is a multi-venue, multi-genre half-week of human singing, period. Its mission is to promote “the human voice as an instrument of healing, peace and artistic expression through presenting world-class performances in Phoenicia, New York and surrounding areas.” Its mission is accomplished in early August, with a staggering array of world-class gospel singers, chamber singers, Latin singers, opera singers, lectures and workshops and more. Woodstock Concerts on the Green Now in its eighth year, Jeff Harrigfeld’s Woodstock Concerts on the Green series has become a real focal point for the rich northern Ulster music scene. Concerts occur every week, on June 8, June 29, July 6, July 27, August 10, August 31 and September 7. The schedule is still settling in, but the list of likely performers is a goldmine of local and national talent: Brian Dewan, Mike & Ruthy, the Dharma Bums, Eric Erickson, dubster Ras T. Ashe-

ber, young prodigy Noel Fletcher, George Quinn, the Rev. Thunderbear Traveling Road Show, Kris Garnier & friends and many more. Woodstock Concerts on the Green, May 25-September 7, Woodstock; search “Woodstock concerts on the green” on Facebook for more information.

Storm King Art Center The Storm King Art Center is a sprawling, otherworldly outdoor art park featuring large-format and environmental sculpture in a winding, multifaceted 500-acre setting. Just being here, one feels heightened, sharpened, attentive to the art of nature and the nature of art. Sounds like a perfect place to attend some serious music, and Storm King obliges, including several concerts in its robust summer event offerings. On Sunday, June 2 at 2 p.m., the Serenade Quartet performed Brahms’s Hungarian Dances, Mozart and more as part of the H. Peter Stern Concert Series. On Sunday, July 14, the tenor will turn toward the rustic and roots with the hootenanny workouts of Spirit Family Reunion. These programs are included in the Storm King Art Center admission. Wassaic Project Summer Festival The Wassaic Project Summer Festival is a highminded, annual and – get this – free multidisciplinary celebration of art, music, dance and community featuring more than 100 artists, 25 bands, film screenings, dance performances and more. It transpires on the property and in the unique buildings of the Wassaic Project on August 2 through 4. The music lineup for this year’s festival is still taking shape (so it always goes on the festival circuit shuffle). One act is confirmed: Superhuman Happiness, a delirious and arty party band that incorporates elements of Minimalism and post-rock pattern study into its uppity take on good-time music. If the 2012 lineup is any indication, this year’s lineup will be filled out with eclecticism and ear for the challenging and unusual. Opus 40 Opus 40, the stunning sculpture park and museum in Saugerties, has a long and storied history as a music venue (and is the subject of a song by well-known art rockers Mercury Rev). Many musical notables who call or have called the Woodstock area home have jumped at the chance to perform in the heightened, otherworldly environment of sculptor Harvey Fite’s winding, rocky and elegant life’s work: Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, Sonny Rollins, Orleans and many more. On June 22 and 23, Ars Choralis will perform Carl Orff ’s masterwork Carmina Burana. This summer, residents and visitors alike are going to be lured down the hill by the Saugerties Sunset Concerts. Falcon Ridge Folk Festival In the Balkanized, post-industry music world, festivals are how you do it now, how performers expand their audience and how audiences get the most out of their live music budget and time. The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival is an important and exemplary festival. Like all the great and lasting ones, it knows its audience and it gives the people what they want while it also subtly moves the boundaries outward, becoming selectively more inclusive and eclectic while staying true to its original purpose and demographic. This year’s lineup continues to define “folk” both regionally and globally, with and without rock propulsion. There’s camping and food and plants and birds and rocks and things. Hudson Valley: Connecting with the River Summer in the Hudson Valley! To our family, one of the best parts of this season is outdoor swimming. As Janet and Steve Fitzgerald from Pine Plains say, “With our grandkids in school full-time, our visits to the park and beach have to wait until summertime now, but it’s a place to bring out the kid in us all.” Here are some favorite local swimming spots right on the Hudson River and at area lakes.

Kingston Point Beach “One of my favorite Hudson Valley memories was the discovery of Kingston Point Beach, which happens to be a city park in Kingston,” shares Rebecca Martin, Hudson Valley resident and musician. “I was alone the very first time, and the beach was empty on my first visit. This sweet little ‘cove’ felt like a private oasis within walking distance of Kingston’s city limits. The air was clear, the commuter train ran periodically along the east side of the Hudson, the expansive Kingston/Rhinecliff Bridge and remnants of Kingston’s brickmaking past somehow were held and made practical in the midst of the big sky and shoreline. It’s a special place that everyone should not only visit, but volunteer to keep it clean and protected. It is one of the few Hudson River swimming spots left!”

Kingston Point Beach also has a playground a short walk from the sand. I recommend wearing swim socks or sandals to protect your feet from the pointy water chestnuts. Rotary Park at Kingston Point is just across the street, and offers more views of the Hudson, birdwatching and nature trails. Kingston Point Beach is located at 53 Delaware Avenue in Kingston. For more information, including swimming hours, call (845) 331-1682 or visit www.kingston-ny.gov.

Sojourner Truth/Ulster Landing Park & Saugerties Beach Just north of Kingston in Saugerties are two more sand beaches worth visiting: Sojourner Truth/Ulster Landing Park and Saugerties Beach. Sojourner Truth/Ulster Landing Park is beautiful and wellcared-for, with a gorgeous view of the river. It has easy parking, close access to the sand beach and well-placed restrooms, and the playground adds one more element of fun! Saugerties Village Beach is a delightful small sand beach. State Parks: Lake Taghkanic, Minnewaska, Belleayre Beach As I mentioned earlier, Janet and Steve Fitzgerald of Pine Plains love summer swimming: “One of the treasures we have rediscovered is Lake Taghkanic State Park, right off the Taconic State Parkway. Different spelling, sounds the same! We’re not exactly too close to the beach here in northern Dutchess County, but this is a wonderful alternative that we’ve taken our grandchildren to, no matter what the season. We’ve found that there’s a fantastic sandy beach, and whether it’s spring or fall, we can always walk barefoot in the sand and try to dip our toes in the water looking at all the minnows swimming about. Bring out those sand toys, and we get to see castles or roadways being built, with us older folks keeping watch and relaxing in beach chairs.

If it gets too windy, we’ve walked over to enjoy the playground or to hike on the trails around the lake. Summertime is water time: bobbing around in the water or renting a kayak, which we have yet to do. But get there early to set up your chair in the shade or sun. We pack our own picnic lunch, or there’s a food stand at the Park building. It all makes you feel like you’re ‘at the shore’ without the traffic, and it’s wonderfully close to home.” And because Lake Taghkanic is a State Park, you can use your Empire Passport car sticker to gain free entry instead of paying the $8 carload admission.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve accepts the Empire Pass, too. It is a small gravel beach, so I recommend wearing water sandals or swimming shoes. The beach is shaded around the sides and has a straight dock from the shore that’s fun to jump off, plus plenty of hiking available around the lake. I just learned that beautiful Belleayre Beach – that spot you keep passing on your way up to ski at Belleayre Mountain – is not taking the Empire Pass this summer. Bummer! Admission is $10 per carload, but free for seniors 70 and up midweek; or patrons can purchase Belleayre Beach passes for the summer. Belleayre Beach is a sandy beach, smaller than Lake Taghkanic, so beautiful, and our son loves jumping off the floating dock in the deeper area. Lake Taghkanic State Park is located at 1528 Route 82 in Ancram. For more information, call (518) 851-3631. Minnewaska State Park Preserve is located at 5281 Route 44/55 in Kerhonkson. For more information, call (845) 255-0752. Lake Taghkanic and Minnewaska can also be visited online at http://nysparks.com. Belleayre Beach is located on Route 28 in Pine Hill, about 35 minutes from the Kingston traffic circle. For more information, call (845) 254-5202 or visit www.belleayre.com/summer/lake.htm.

Red Wing Park “Our family spent the hot days of summers at Red Wing Park in East Fishkill, and now I take my grandchildren! My children loved it, and so do my grandchildren. River Pool One unique way to experience the Hudson River is in the River Pool at Beacon. This quiet, peaceful spot is a floating, colorful water ring that remains attached to the shoreline, accessible by a short walkway. The circle is lined with seats on the outside, the middle is open space, the bottom is a permeable net. Staffed by lifeguards, this experience is perfect for folks who just want to sit and rest their feet in the water and read, young kids who like the security of a small swim space without the sand or minnows or kids practicing short,

shallow underwater jaunts. It took our family a few minutes to get used to the feeling of the mesh floor of the River Pool, as well as what to do there; then we had a fantastic time. There are dressing rooms nearby, as well as a playground.

The River Pool is free and open to the public of all ages and is open in early July for the season from Tuesday through Sunday, 12 noon to 6 p.m. The River Pool is located at Riverfront Park in Beacon, near the Beacon train station. For more information, call (914) 629-4598 or visit www.riverpool.org.

Just down the lane from River Pool and also near the Beacon train station is the Beacon Sloop Club, founded by Pete Seeger and others interested in the health of the Hudson River. Then you arrive that evening at 6 p.m. at the Beacon Sloop Club boathouse, right in front of the Beacon train station, to get your lifejacket; then you climb aboard at about 6:30 p.m.

The boats are staffed by all levels of volunteers learning to sail, headed up by an experienced captain. Passengers bring snacks to eat and share around the boat, as everyone enjoys the ride together. I have driven over the Hudson River countless times, I have gone swimming in it, but

But it has a limited schedule to accommodate train commuters: The Ferry runs weekdays in the morning from 5:41 a.m. to 7:59 a.m. and again for evening from 5:34 p.m. to 8:40 p.m., closed on weekends.

The Newburgh/Beacon Ferry landings are located at the south end of the Newburgh waterfront at the ends of Washington and Front Streets, and at the dock in front of the Beacon train station. For more information, call (800) 53-FERRY or visit www.nywaterway.com/newburghtobeaconroute.aspx.

Rip Van Winkle Kids’ Kruises

You can book a free sailboat ride on the Woody Guthrie all summer long. this sailboat ride helped me feel more connected to it. There’s a limit of around a dozen guests, plus volunteer staff added to that, so it’s an intimate ride. The sail lasts anywhere from two to two-anda-half hours, and the ride is peppered with information about the river and the history of the boat. It feels a little long to hold my kids’ interest – plus, you have to remain seated, which would be tough for them to do the entire time – but it made for a perfect outing with my husband. The Beacon Sloop Club is located at 2 Red Flynn Drive in Beacon. For reservations or more information, call (845) 297-7697 or visit www.beaconsloop.org.

Another way to experience boating on the Hudson River is to take a cruise on the Rip Van Winkle. The Rip Van Winkle offers narrated tours all season long into October, as well as music cruises, deejay dance parties and murder-mystery dinners, all for adults. They also have three Kids’ Kruises at 11:30 a.m. scheduled for July 12, August 9 and October 26. Each Kids’ Kruise includes an engaging and interactive magic show and a deejay who spins dance tunes afterwards.

Our kids love these cruises, including the concession and souvenir stands, and they ask to go every year. When you’re done, stop by the Hudson River Maritime Museum right next door, or stop by Ship to Shore just one block away for something to eat. Tickets for Kids’ Kruises cost $21 for adults, $13 for children ages 4 to 11 years, $19 for seniors age 65 and older and free for children under 4 years of age. Hudson River Cruises are located at 1 East Strand Street in Kingston. For reservations or more information, call (845) 340-4700 or visit www.hudsonrivercruises.com.

“Funky Little Sweet Thing” “Put your arms around me/Movin’ to the music/ Let me feel you near me/Funky little sweet thing,” croons Heather Masse in the new song “Funky Little Sweet Thing (Slow Dance for Fast Times)”, written by Verna Gillis and Roswell Rudd. “In a world of twirling and scrambling to keep up, this song intends to slow you down and bring you into physical contact with a loved one, be it a partner, lover, parent, child, friend, neighbor, pet.”

If You Want to See a Whale I think what I love about Ezra Jack Keats Book Award-winner Julia Fogliano’s books is the utter simplicity and openness. It’s like getting the best part of any story – just the essence. Her latest picture book, If You Want to See a Whale, is illustrated by Erin Stead: the same artist who partnered with Fogliano in her previous release, And Then It’s Spring.

Taking in each page feels expansive, inviting, like I’m literally sharing a moment in time on every page with the little boy in the book, as if we were having a shared experience. The storyline also serves as a terrific platform for discernment about what we see on the surface, and what we see in the world when we apply more insight and awareness. This is a great book to add to this summer’s story rotation. For more information about If You Want to See a Whale, visit http://us.macmillan.com/ifyouwanttoseeawhale/juliefogliano.

You Look Different in Real Life If you have Young Adult (YA) literature fans in your family, or you’re a YA reader yourself, pick up a copy of Jennifer Castle’s new book You Look Different in Real Life as part of your summer reading list. Castle explains, “This story is set in the Hudson Valley, so I’m really excited for local readers in particular to check it out. I feel like it’s the kind of book parents and teens can both enjoy.” The novel explores the dynamics among five youths who are featured in a documentary series together: They were first filmed back in kindergarten at age 6, then filmed at age 11 and now at age 16.

The narrator, Justine, feels and notices everything, and the way that she reacts to whatever is happening affects me as the reader. Justine puts words to ideas that either seem to be missed by the others or that they just cannot express, and it’s done in such a charming, youthful way: “Sometimes I think of an invisible cord connecting Nate and Keira and Felix and Rory and me. It’s made of something thin and deceptively powerful, like the stuff Spider-Man squirts out of his wrists. Then I wonder who spun it. Was it Lance and Leslie? Was it everyone who’s ever watched the Five At documentaries? Or maybe it was me. All I know is that it’s always there. It stretches and winds but will never break.” Castle’s writing also offers interesting insights beyond the relationship of the characters: “Leslie once told me that a film isn’t made by shooting stuff but rather, by editing it. The shooting is the inspiration and the ideas and the paint palette.

The editing is the artist actually picking up the brush to accomplish the doing, the making something out of nothing.” I appreciate the wisdom Justine draws from her experiences as she makes amends and becomes more true to herself, which makes it possible for her to have more authentic relationships in the end.

When the World Was New Grammy Award-winning producer Dean Jones’s new album When the World Was New is a terrific collection of fun, positive songs with a great sound and engaging lyrics. “Stand with Me,” “Absurd” and “Prehensile Grip” are among my favorite tunes on the CD. – September 2013 34 | June Explore Hudson Valley depths of heretofore-undiscovered world mythology. That’s how I see Stefan Bolz’s book The Three Feathers.

In the story, a rooster named Joshua leaves the comfortable and predictable life of the chicken coop and heads on a quest to uncover the meaning of a persistent dream he has about three feathers. Along the way, he befriends Grey the wolf and Krieg the horse, and they travel together, inspired and motivated by Joshua’s vision: “Why did you help me?” Joshua asks the wolf. Grey replies, “I do not know the answer...I just knew I had to. The... longing in you was so strong and powerful I wanted to help you find whatever it was you are looking for. Maybe so I could find whatever it is I’m searching for as well.” I celebrate this idea of the importance of the personal journey, accomplished in some way with others, as a fortifying and essential element to the world. I like the way the challenges that this trio encounters are not minimized or skipped over in some way. It’s very lifelike, this ebb and flow of confidence and doubt among the characters: “That you don’t trust your own strength doesn’t mean I don’t have any left. It also doesn’t mean you can’t trust mine.” I’ve included this book in my summer picks list because it’s about family – not just our families of origin, but those we choose to have accompany us in our lives. It’s also a book that’s suitable for practically all ages: The storyline is engaging and operates on so many different levels, yet remains accessible to anyone, with lots of thought-provoking insights that invite reflection from the reader. I think part of what makes the larger concepts more digestible is the fact that the characters are all animals. I can identify the way I want to. We need each other; it’s such a sweet reminder: “Even if he found the feathers, what then? It was hard for him to remember how much they meant to him when they appeared in his dream. One thing was certain: If he hadn’t found Grey and Krieg, he would not have come as far as he did.

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome’s 1909 Bleriot

And even more, the friendship between them was what truly made all this worthwhile. It was more than he could have ever hoped to find.” The Three Feathers is available throughout the Hudson Valley as well as digitally. For more information, visit http://thethreefeathers.com.

NYS Golden Park Program/ Federal Parks Access Pass Martha Koenig of Gardiner told me about New York State’s Golden Park Program. What a deal! Maverick Concerts Did you know that the oldest continuous summer chamber music festival takes place right in Woodstock every summer? Maverick Concerts offer incredible musicians and artists from around the world, as well as our local area. They also show their commitment to families and youth with their Young People’s Concerts, which are free for children and cost only $5 for adults.

Young People’s Concerts take place on Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. and last for approximately one hour. This year’s series features Elizabeth Mitchell & Friends on June 29; the Eribeth Chamber Players on July 6; Ilya Yakushev on July 20; and Marc Black on August 3. The setting is serene: a simple music chapel in the woods. The music? Sublime. And be sure to see who performs the evening and matinée regular concerts. Maverick Concerts are located at 120 Maverick Road in Woodstock. For more information, call (845) 679-8217 or visit http://maverickconcerts.org.

North/South Lake Just driving to North/South Lake is worth it. I feel like I’m spiraling into the magical world of Rip Van Winkle, disappearing into the Catskills.

North/South Lake is a campground with swimming and boating as well as hiking trails. But I’ll let you in on a secret: It’s a fantastic place to do a camping day trip. Here’s how it works. I reserve my campsite online for $22. I pack up a tent, food to grill and a change of clothes for our family. We swim and play, grill dinner, hang out around the campsite, then clean up and leave! It’s like all of the joy of camping with half the gear. I’m sure that it’s fun actually to stay overnight, but this is one way for families to experience the joy of the space without the commitment of sleeping there. North/South Lake is located at County Route 18 in Haines Falls. For more information, call (518) 589-5058 or visit www.dec.ny.gov.

Orange County Arboretum Apparently I slip into the feeling of royalty very easily, because when I drive up to the gates at the Orange County Arboretum and they just open! – just like that! – I feel pretty regal. Then I enter the garden and I’m transported into my own personal Versailles. That wisteria? Oh, yes; I had that grown for my queendom. That fountain? Yes, I had that commissioned.

I stroll through the gravel walkways surrounded by a world of flowers and shrubs that look very different from anywhere else: so well-caredfor, thoughtfully and skillfully attended-to. And the incredible floating globe in honor of Orange County lives lost on 9/11 is a poignant remembrance. Sure, the Arboretum has plant sales and children’s programs, but don’t wait; just go. Visit “my” garden. Afterwards, make a stop at the nearby Orange County Airport. You can get a bite to eat while watching for planes at Culinary Creations, or bring your own food and enjoy the picnic tables out back.

Hidden in plain sight: That’s my first impression of Springside. I had never heard of it before a friend tagged the site in a photo that she posted online. I must have seen signs for this place over the years, driving through Poughkeepsie, but never noticed or thought about them. Matthew Vassar, founder of Vassar College, owned this land a long time ago. He commissioned Andrew Jackson Downing to cultivate it as an “ornamental farm,” which would be both productive as well as decorative. Over the years, the garden fell into disarray, but a committed band of volunteers is restoring the space. I love the photos and signs that they position along the grassy pathways that give visitors a sense of what it used to be like; and the remaining freshwater spring (for which the land is named) and ruins have a way of “proving” the proud history of the estate. Our kids loved discovering the geocache, too.

Going to the mall? On your way home from work or school? Looking for somewhere new to explore without a long drive? Go check out Springside, a national landmark. Springside is located off Academy Street, off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, and is well-signed. For more information, call (845)

Wing’s Castle Wing’s Castle is unlike any place that you’ll ever see. The reason is its meticulous and imaginative use of reclaimed materials to create it. It is impossible to notice every clever detail, to guess the source of every artistic expression; it is truly a feast for the eyes.

Wing’s Castle is a private home that opens for paid tours by the owner and builder from Wednesday through Sunday during the summer, and weekends in the fall until the snow hits. The tour takes under an hour, and I found it fascinating. My kids were engaged on the tour as well, because there is simply so much to look at. Be prepared to hear lots of earnest, “Can we do that at our house, Mom?” Afterwards, we got lunch at the Millbrook Diner, then we drove down the street to the awesome Millbrook Playground down the street. Crafts Here are three quick craft ideas that can enhance your summer family fun: 1. Make a hummingbird feeder in about 60 seconds by cutting holes into two sides of a red plastic disposable cup, then hanging outside. Fill with a 1:4 sugar solution and wait for hummingbirds to come visit! 2. Make an easy birdfeeder in about ten seconds by cutting off the top of an egg carton and filling the bottom with seeds, then hang outside. 3. Make epic glow-in-the-dark bubbles by breaking a glowstick into bubble solution. Erica Chase-Salerno celebrates Hudson Valley summers in New Paltz and beyond with her husband Mike and their two children: the inspirations behind hudsonvalleyparents.com.
