Welcome! Welcome to the historic 23rd Annual Taste of New Paltz. According to the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics, the happiest age a person can be is 23. Guess who (or should we say, what) turns 23 this year. Why, the Taste of New Paltz, of course, making it the happiest festival of food and fun this side of the Mississippi (er, Hudson) River! And the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce is the proud steward of this joyful community-oriented annual event. From humble beginnings, the Taste has become one of the local community’s most beloved events as well as a destination for foodies far and wide. With a primary focus on food and beverage, the Taste has grown over the years to encompass a little something for everyone, including an antique car show, activities for children, wellness and recreation demonstrations, a business expo, arts, crafts, and music – sweet music. While the Taste has been concerned with the green movement in years past, we have taken it to a whole new level this year with compostable cups and serving utensils, as well as compost and recycling containers all around the fairgrounds so that eventually, we hope to produce an event that creates zero net waste. The New Paltz area has a reputation for progressive thoughts on the matter of being kind to the earth, and we are proud to be a part of the solution by implementing change towards a greener future, little by little. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce and all our generous sponsors, we welcome you to the 23rd Annual Taste of New Paltz. May the festivities begin! Sincerely,

Michael A. Smith, President New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce

rganized by the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce and led by then-Chamber president Joyce Minard and Colleen Gillette of New Paltz Travel Center, the original committee of the first Taste of New Paltz met in September 1991 to put together an event that would showcase area businesses. The Taste should be no ordinary expo, they decided. It would be a taste of the best stuff in the Hudson Valley. The idea was simple: food and fun. Invite the area’s many fantastic local restaurants to offer samplings of their finest dishes, include regional artists and crafters to showcase their wares and goods, and put the region’s high quality of life on display. Fourteen restaurants signed up for the inaugural Taste event, held at what was then Rivendell Winery (currently Robibero Family Vineyards). There was also pumpkin painting and storytelling, special fun lined up for kids. No one knew what to expect. The Taste committee relied heavily on word of mouth, and organizers hoped for a few hundred people at best. More than a thousand turned out. The event grew from there. After a few successful years at the winery, the Taste moved

to the more spacious Ulster County Fairgrounds on Libertyville Road, where it has been held ever since. Through the years, the Taste has grown into a major community event in the Hudson Valley region and beyond, regularly drawing nearly 10,000 attendees, vendors and volunteers for a taste not only of the fare of top

area restaurants, wineries and farms, but also of all that makes our region special. While food, wine and agriculture will always be the main events at Taste of New Paltz, the event has expanded to spotlight the entirety of our region’s unique character. It now encompasses additional categories: wellness and recreation, business products and services, antiques, arts and crafts, and classic cars. But the Taste has not forgotten its foundation as a family event. Children age 12 and under are admitted free! Children’s activities are featured in the Kids Expo. Live music by our region’s bands have become part of the Taste tradition. Memorable past performances by The Big Takeover, The Trapps, Big Joe Fitz, Shorty King’s Clubhouse, The Bernstein-Bard Trio and Jude Roberts have rounded out a full day of activity at the fairgrounds. The New Paltz community and those traveling here from out of town alike see Taste of New Paltz as a way to get together and explore the latest dishes, wines, beer, and farm products being made in the Hudson Valley, served personally by local chefs, farmers, vintners and brewers. Businesses view the Taste as a one-of-a-kind way to garner a huge amount of exposure, network across industry lines, and meet a broad variety of people, business owners and managers in one place. Be there for the action this year and help promote the Chamber and the community. Enjoy the day! Farm Fresh Local and sustainable are more than trendy words in New Paltz and the surrounding region. They’re a way of life. Immerse yourself in a rich agricultural history with a visit to our farms and farm markets, where local families have farmed the land for generations and produced the freshest, most mouth-watering fruit, vegetables, gourds and beef. New Paltz is astonishingly rich in the tradition of harvest, with a variety of farming and food production stretching from early Summer through to the winter holidays. During harvest season, you’ll find a profusion of local farm and orchard festivals, with pick-your-own fruit and pumpkins, bobbing for apples, cider doughnut-eating contests, huge corn mazes, and more. New Paltz is arguably best known around the world for its outdoor attractions, and for good reason. New Paltz and the surrounding region offer a host of trail options for hikers and bicyclists, with some of the best views of the Hudson Valley.

Rail Trails From the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, more than twelve miles of linear park connecting Gardiner and Rosendale’s newly reopened Trestle Bridge, to the Walkway Over the Hudson, the world’s tallest and longest pedestrian walkway, connecting the Hudson Valley Rail Trail on the west side of the Hudson to the Dutchess County Rail Trail on the east side, we’ve got miles and

In with the new Meet the co-chairs: Paty Lott and Michael Smith PHOTOS BY RICH COROZINE

By Erin Quinn

M

ichael Smith, director of the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Paty Lott, owner of the Gray Owl Gallery in the Water Street Market, are this year’s Taste of New Paltz dynamic co-chairs. Lott got her feet wet last year by taking on the role of volunteer chair, coordinating the hundreds of volunteers that it takes for the Taste, which has grown over the past 23 years to welcome upwards of 7, 000 visitors annually. “My role includes overseeing and managing all of the 22 different committee chairs,” said Lott. While Lott studied maps of the Taste layout in her gallery, she explained the background of certain artists and pieces. “The Taste, as you know, is much more than food,” she said. “We have committees for antiques, fine arts and crafts, the business expo, the kids’ expo, the health and wellness expo, wineries and a beer garden.” Why would a local businessperson take on a volunteer role of this magnitude? “I’m part of the Chamber, and I feel it’s my responsibility to give back to our business community and support our incredible community so that we can all continue to survive and thrive,” said Lott. The gallery owner has a background in events planning. “When I worked for Clear Channel Radio, I was in charge of all of the programming for fairs and festivities, putting together the programs, ensuring which radio personality would be at which fair, so I’m familiar with this,” she said. “I was also a catering manager for many years, so those experiences make this task a little less daunting then it might be for someone else.” That said, Lott admits she can’t help obsessing over the weather. “We can plan everything down to its exact detail, but we can’t plan Mother Nature,” she said. “Of course I want the weather to be perfect so that people can enjoy and savor all of the food, wine, beer, fresh produce and businesses our area has to offer. Our numbers go down slightly if it’s raining or blistering hot, but we still have a great event regardless of the weather – which is why we have so much of the Taste tented, in case of any weather extremes.”

I

f Lott is more the orchestrator of the event, her co-chair, Smith, is the mechanic, making sure that the Taste runs like a welloiled machine and not the three-wheeled tractor gimping along the Libertyville Road fairgrounds. “I can’t believe what he does!” said Lott. “I’m in awe. Yes, I have the layout, and I’m helping to organize and coordinate; but Michael is in charge of ordering all of the tents, chairs, ensuring that every vendor has the proper permits, managing the true logistics of 10 • Taste

the event so that when we get there what I have on paper is actually in place.” “Even though we’ve been baking this cake for 23 years, we have to start from scratch and build it fresh each year,” she added. Smith was equally complimentary in describing working with Lott. Smith is of course involved in every aspect of the operation. He’s responsible for the event. The buck stops with him. Said Helen Gutfreund, the Chamber’s director of marketing and communications, “He’s a true manager in that sense, making sure all the pieces are in place.” How did Smith find being in charge of this year’s Taste? “The experience has been a major effort,” said a weary Smith. “But it’s been a real good people experience. You get a real feel for the pulse of the community.“ Smith said that in his career he’s run a variety of major events and put together a lot of volunteer committees. “That’s the joy of it all,” he said. “You deal with such a variety of people to put together package that includes them all. When dealing with volunteers, you’re trying to find out how they’re doing. It’s not just about the Chamber, it’s about the whole community.”

T

he Taste is more than Lott and Smith, more even than the hundreds of volunteers and the Chamber. Another

key ingredient in the success of the event are the local sponsors that help fund the event and present all of what New Paltz and its neighboring municipalities have to offer. The local businesses getting involved on the sponsorship level have resulted in a decision to give a portion of the proceeds to Cornell Cooperative Extension, backbone of the county’s agricultural community, this year. “We’re also moving towards a zero-waste event, with the help of another volunteer who has been on fire getting waste centers ordered, manned and coordinated,” Lott said. “That’s our goal: to continually Mike Smith grow and improve the event each year, adding new things, heading in different directions while still keeping the original vision of highlighting all of what New Paltz has to offer, encouraging the community to come out and enjoy their own bounty as well as bring visitors in to see what we have to offer besides our exquisite Mohonk Preserve, farms, climbing and outdoor activities.” What Lott said she loves about the Taste is how local people and tourists alike can get the full flavor of the diverse offerings from the vibrant nearby community, New Paltz’s wide variety of goods and services, including everything from homegrown banks to insurance agencies to contractors and massage therapists. “That’s what makes New Paltz such a great community: There is truly something for everyone here.” Lott and Smith gave a huge tip of the hat to Gary Newkirk, who manages the Ulster County Fairgrounds. “He’s amazing,” said Lott. “I don’t know how we could pull this off without him.” While the details to help launch the 23rd annual Taste of New Paltz are being finalized, Lott conceded that in the back of her mind she was already starting to think about the 25th anniversary. “I know that sounds crazy,” she said, “but we’re seeing this year as a building block towards that enormous anniversary and what we can do to make it even more special and spectacular.”

The Pleasers Formed in 2012 and made up of highlyregarded Hudson valley musicians, The Pleasers have quickly established a reputation for crowd-rocking performances with their fresh take on your favorite songs from the golden age of Motown and old-school soul. With their matching suits and synchronized dance moves, you will surely get swept up by the joyful performance of this group.

Albany, brings love, resistance, and ancestral remembrance to venues, festivals, conferences and political events across the globe. Powerful vocals are laid over an energetic fusion of AfroLatin, reggae and rock. The band’s eclectic style offers a sound that spans continents, with heartfelt lyrics sung in multiple languages. Taína Asili y la Banda Rebelde released their debut album War Cry in 2010. With lyrical integrity and dynamic sound, the multilingual album War Cry blends the energy of Ojos de Brujo, the soul of Lila Downs and the defiance of Rage Against the Machine. Journalist Josh Potter of Metroland, Albany’s alternative newsweekly, describes War Cry as “a panglobal roots-musical mélange that appeals to the struggle of tradition to envision a world of social justice.” “If you look at our history,” says Asili, “you see over and over that music has played a central role in changing how people think, for the good and bad. How we make change in the larger political landscape starts with how we affect one another individually, and music brings message in a way that opens people— their heart, mind, spirit.” Source: http://tainaasili.com/biography/

Green is good PHOTO BY RICH COROZINE

Taste of New Paltz promotes recycling and composting this year By Erin Quinn

T

he Taste of New Paltz is painting its palate green. In its 23rd year of celebrating and promoting all that is New Paltz and the surrounding region, the Taste is putting a greater emphasis on becoming an ecofriendly event, in line with the values supported by local residents. To this end, there will be a dozen recycling and composting waste stations throughout the event, which draws no fewer than 7000 people per year. This effort is in large part due to the volunteer enthusiasm of environmentalist Wendy Toman, who two years ago moved to the area with her family from Delaware. “I volunteered at the Taste last year in the business expo, and was aghast at all of the waste being thrown into the trash,” Toman explained. “When I inquired about recycling and waste, the Chamber [New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event] told me honestly that there had been a mistake, that recycling bins should have been put out but for whatever reason were not.” This year, the Chamber invited Toman to assist it with moving towards its goal of becoming a zero-waste event. “I was happy to do it,” she said. “I have plenty of experience with recycling and educating the public and school systems on best practices from my work in Delaware, before I moved here.” Toman has wasted little time. She has organized a dozen waste stations staffed by volunteers to assist and educate taste-goers on how they can best recycle or compost their waste. “We have a recycling bin, a commercial compost bin that will take all food scraps, meat and fish, as well as what I call a landfill container, which tells people that what they throw in there is going into our waste stream and our landfills.” COLUCCI SHAND REALTY, INC.

She acknowledges that not everyone understands the recycling process, and that there the event attracts many visitors from the New York City metropolitan area. “That’s why I wanted our recycling waste stations to be managed and supervised by volunteers.” She said, “so that they could educate people on what can or cannot be recycled, and why.” Toman has received various ecosponsorships from participating vendors and companies, including Sierra Nevada, Inc., which has supplied the expanded beer and microbrew tent with recyclable clear plastic cups. “The Beer Garden is a huge addition to the Taste of New Paltz, and I’m so pleased with the vendors’ and companies’ response about moving towards a zero-waste event,” she said. As well as the recyclable beer and wine cups, there will also be souvenir reusable cups for the beer and wine tent with a Taste logo sponsored by Ted Clark & Associates. Those purchasing them will receive a dollar (one ticket less) discount as they refill their craft and micro brews.. Toman has received a $1000 grant from Stop & Shop to provide food vendors with compostable utensils. “They will be in bright kelly green and easy to spot and compost at our waste stations,” explained Toman. “They’re made of various plant materials and can be composted at a commercial site. At this stage,

we’re not requiring vendors to use all ecofriendly and recyclable or compostable material, but we are providing them with this free option.” Runners will place buckets near the food vendors. While they’re prepping and cooking, the food preparers can put the waste into the buckets. “Our runners will take that waste to the composting bins, and then bring back a fresh, empty bucket.” Toman said. “That way, businesses are not losing precious time, but they’re becoming part of our zero-waste intent for the Taste.” She applauded Stop & Shop Corporation. “They’re pushing for healthier children, healthier food choices, which is what the Taste is all about,” she said. “We’re all local farms, restaurants, wineries, health advocates, working to create a sustainable and healthy environment for our kids and adults. The Taste is great, but part of our mission is to promote healthy food, living and exercise.” Toman expects this year’s Taste to make major progress toward the intended goal of a zero-waste event. She recognizes that raising awareness is more than a one-year effort. “We’re encouraging business and vendors to use recyclable, compostable materials, and many of them are. But we realize that they’re doing so requires a greater expense,” she said. “If they do it, great. If they don’t, we’ll work on more funding and education for next year.”

Craft Beer Guild Distributing

C

raft Beer Guild Distributing of New York was formed in early 2013 to meet the growing demand for domestic craft and specialty imported beer, cider, and gourmet sodas throughout the Hudson Valley and Capital Region. We selected New Paltz as our hub not only for its geographic proximity to the marketplace, but also because the local community of retailers and consumers is very supportive of our mission. Our mission is to raise the level of awareness and passion for our great industry through retailer and consumer education, event sponsorships like the Taste of New Paltz, and improving the availability of the brands we proudly represent. We proudly employ over 50 local residents, and we are committed to supporting the local economy. Beer is best when consumed fresh. Our entire organization is committed to ensuring that you will always experience our brands as each Brewmaster has intended. You can buy our products with confidence, knowing that the Craft Beer Guild team has ensured its quality and freshness from the brewery to the point of purchase. For more information about the brands we represent, please log onto our website, greatbrewers.com, follow us on Facebook and Twitter or download our Mobile App, Beercloud. Cheers! SIERRA NEVADA- Chico, California Inspired by the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains, our beers are designed to be as bold, wild and unwavering as those storied granite peaks. Sierra Nevada beers are inspired by the philosophy that anything is possible. Pale Ale: American Pale Ale | 5.6% ABV It has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor. Tumbler: Brown Ale | 5.5% ABV In our Autumn Brown Ale we use malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Flipside: Red Ale | 6.2% ABV Featuring a ruby-red hue, restrained malt body and abundant tropical fruit and citrus hop flavors from the use of Citra, Simcoe and Centennial hops, Flipside Red IPA is the perfect beer for the final flash of summer. Kellerweis: Hefeweizen | 4.8%ABV Kellerweis is one of the only American Hefeweizens made using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation. Our hazy-golden hefeweizen is deeply flavorful, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day. NARRAGANSETT-Providence, Rhode Island Lager: Golden Lager | 5% ABV 20 • Taste

of New Paltz - September 2013

This beer is brewed just right for drinking—crisp and refreshing. It’s got more flavor than other premium lagers, yet it’s one of the most drinkable beers in the world. Light: Light Lager | 3.8% ABV

Quenching and light, it’s got the same alcohol content and calorie count as a typical domestic light beer, but does it without sacrificing taste the way those others do. Fest Lager: Traditional German Oktoberfest | 5.5% ABV Narragansett Fest is a great example of a traditional amberbrown German Oktoberfest style beer. It is perfectly balanced with four varieties of malts and two styles of hops. L AGUNITASP e t a l u m a , California IPA: American-Style India Pale Ale | 6.2% ABV Thanks for choosing to spend the next few minutes with this special homicidally hoppy ale. Savor the moment as the raging hop character engages the imperial qualities of the Malt foundation in mortal combat on the battlefield of your palate!

ALLAGASH -Portland, Maine Allagash began as New England’s original BelgianStyle brewery and have grown into one of the industry’s most distinguished and well-respected brands. White: Belgian Wheat Beer | 5.0% ABV Our interpretation of a traditional Belgian wheat beer, Allagash White is unique and truly refreshing. Brewed with a generous portion of wheat and our own special blend of spices, this beer is light and slightly cloudy in appearance, with a spicy aroma. PEEKSKILL- Peekskill, New York Hop Common: California Common | 5.7% ABV Unfiltered with amber hues and a medium body. Segal Ranch Nugget and Cascade Hops give citrus and fresh pine on the nose. Finishes dry with slight bitterness. Doc’s Our mission since our inception has been to create fruit based alcoholic beverages that are as unique as the fruits themselves. Hard Cider: Hard Apple Cider | 4.5% ABV

This cider is semi-dry and wonderfully effervescent with a remarkably fresh apple nose. Fruit forward taste, clean and refreshing finish. Naked Flock- Warwick, New York The Naked Flock is introducing people to a true Hudson Valley Hard Cider. “Our Cider is for people who crave unique flavor and are on the hunt for quality.” Says Cider maker Jonathan Hull. Orginal Cider: Hard Apple Cider | 6.8% ABV The Original Cider is fermented with Champagne yeast and sweetened with a touch of local honey. The Bronx Brewery- Bronx, New York A small, craft brewery in the Port Morris section of the South Bronx. Food Pairings:

A

t this year’s Taste, we are proud to introduce the pairing of Craft Beers from our Beer Garden with participating restaurants offering their signature dishes. We are serving smaller pours (as well as pints!) of beer samples to allow Taste participants the opportunity to try a variety of beer styles with “tasting portions” of signature dishes. The basic premise of pairing beer with food is

to match “strength with strength”. Beers that are hoppy, flavorful, and bitter pair well with dishes that are spicy. For example, an India Pale Ale pairs well with Indian Curry Chicken or a Japanese Spicy Tuna Toll. As you explore the beer offerings and look at the dishes being offered by this year’s Taste food purveyors, look for harmonies and combinations that share some common flavors or aroma elements. The roasted, caramelized or grilled flavors

of a Sausage sandwich with the caramelly flavors of an Octoberfest Lager. In addition to harmonies, consider the elements of contrast as a good pairing will bring out not only the most desirable flavors in the beer but in the food as well! Practice is the key! Enjoy the selections we have put together and explore what this year’s Taste has to offer!
