Farm fresh Local and sustainable are more than just trendy words in New Paltz and the surrounding region. They’re a way of life. Immerse yourself in rich agricultural history with a visit to our farms and farm markets, where local families have farmed the land and produced the freshest fruit, vegetables, gourds and beef for generations. New Paltz is astonishingly rich in the tradition of harvest, with a variety of farming and food production stretching from early summer through to the winter holidays. During harvest season, you’ll find a profusion of local farm and orchard festivals, with pick-your-own fruit and pumpkins, bobbing for apples, ciderdoughnut-eating contests, huge corn mazes, and more.

New Paltz is known around the world for its outdoor attractions, and for good reason. New Paltz and the surrounding region offer a host of trail options for hikers and bicyclists, with some of the best views of the Hudson Valley. From the Wallkill Valley Rail-Trail, more than twelve miles of linear park connecting Gardiner and Rosendale’s newly reopened Trestle Bridge, to the Walkway Over the Hudson, the world’s tallest and longest pedestrian walkway, connecting the Hudson Valley Rail-Trail on the west side of the Hudson to the Dutchess County Rail-Trail on the east side, the area boasts miles and miles of vehicle-free trails to explore. The Shawangunk Ridge offers a host of trail options for hikers and bicyclists with some of the best views in the Hudson Valley. Bonticou Crag in the Mohonk Preserve, Skytop on the grounds of the world-renowned, 140-year-old Mohonk Mountain House resort, Awosting Falls in the Minnewaska State Park Preserve and the Ice Caves in Sam’s Point Preserve are just a taste of what the Shawangunk Ridge has to offer. For

rock climbers, ‘The Gunks’ are the single busiest climbing destination in North America, with some 50,000 technical climbers visiting the area each year to scale roughly 1200 documented climbing routes. The less adventurous can see the climbers in action from the Mohonk Preserve’s Undercliff/Overcliff trail. Bicycle Depot Mohonk Preserve Minnewaska State Park Walkway Over the Hudson State Park

For more offthe-ground adventure, take a trip to Hunter Mountain for the longest and highest zipline canopy tour in North America, or take a scenic skyride on its state-of-the-art lift to the 3200foot summit. For downhill skiing and snowboarding, New Paltz and the surrounding region is a terrific jumping off point for the Catskill ski region. Hunter Mountain features three separate mountains encompassing a wide variety of terrain catering to skiers and riders of all ability levels, from comfortable and spacious learning terrain perfect for first-time beginners, to steeps and bumps for the seasoned expert. Complementary tastes “A full experience from beginning to end” for Tuthilltown guests By John Litton Photos by Lauren Thomas

A

t the age of 18 Selah Tuthill had the dream of opening a mill to serve the local farming community. Selah built his grist mill, which gave birth to the community of Gardiner. That was back in 1788. Now, 226 years later, the old mill is helping bring Ralph Erenzo’s dream of creating a farm distillery and restaurant to serve as a showcase for finely crafted New York distilled spirits and food true. Tuthill House Spirits and the Tuthill House Mill Restaurant are joined in creating that guest destination. The mill had the reputation of being the oldest continuously operating grist mill in the State of New York. In 1982 it was producing

disrepair. In 2001 Ralph Erenzo and Vicki Morgan purchase the property on which the distillery now sits. Ralph’s dream was to open a farm distillery which used New York State products to create craft spirits. In 2004 Tuthilltown opened for business. Brian Lee and Erenzo created Hudson brand whiskeys, bourbons from local corn and apple- and wheat-based vodkas. People would come for tours and tastings of the award-winning spirits. But something was missing. In 2006 The Gabriellos, Joe and Toby, purchased the old mill, fully restored it, and opened the TuthillHouse at the Mill Restaurant. The restaurant served steaks, seafood and Italian cuisine in the fully restored mill and catered events on the expansive lawn. The business grew along with its reputation. With the restaurant and the distillery working side by side, the area in Gardiner became a local hot spot. Craft distilling grew. The food and catering were in demand. In 2013 the distillery began looking to purchase the restaurant. This year distillery CEO Richard Lindsay approached the Gabriellos. A deal was signed in the late spring.

The TuthillHouse at the Mill Restaurant & Tavern.

The restaurant serves American cuisine featuring locally grown produce, steaks, grassfed beef, pork and quality seafood. The new menu will include small plates with new tastes and flavors. The new menu, which will be complete in the fall, will use the distillery products in some of the dishes to create a gastro-pub environment. Events are designed to bring people who want to enjoy both the spirits and food. Smoke House Sundays from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. will showcase smoked meats — ribs, pork, chicken, brisket. On a monthly basis, Booze and Books will feature authors who have written about cocktails and food. The chef will work with the author to create a special menu and specialty cocktails from the head bartender will get center stage. Space for weddings, bachelor parties, rehearsal and anniversary dinners will be available at the restaurant. Packages including tastings. Dinner will be offered as well. Luz Reid is excited to participate in this year’s Taste of New Paltz. “It’s a great venue,” said Reid. “We want to introduce our new concept and flavors, focusing on the restaurant, while reintroducing people to Tuthilltown Spirits and our craft products.” The company sees the complementary businesses as working together to help the Tuthilltown brand grow and prosper. “It’s fun to think that when I began here in 2008 there were eight employees,” said Reid. “Now with the addition of the restaurant we will have nearly 60 employees working together.” Selah Tuthill would have been proud as well as impressed. To arrange a tour, contact Luz Reid at the distillery at 255-1527. For information on the restaurant contact Audra Norris at 255-4151 Tastings are Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Restaurant hours are Tuesday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday until 10 p.m. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

The three metal grain silos at Tuthilltown Spirits.

Tuthilltown Spirits took over management of the restaurant, leasing it from the owners until a purchase can be completed. The two enterprises became one. The dream of a destination was soon to be realized. “We had been kicking the idea around for some time,” said Luz Reid, events coordinator for TuthillTown. “It should be complete in the fall.”

“The idea is to have a full experience from beginning to end,” said Aja Schmeltz, former marketing coordinator.

Reflecting on the festival Why is Taste important to influential New Paltzians?

aria Rice, the superintendent of New Paltz’s schools, heads to Taste of New Paltz pretty much every year representing the Rotary Club. She sells water and educates people about Rotarian charity projects. Nine years ago — when Rice threw her hat into the ring for the superintendent’s job — she remembers that it was the community and the people who drew her in. “I was searching for a school for my son and New Paltz was looking for a superintendent,” she said. “I was very fortunate to have been selected.” Rice added: “My son had a great school to go to (and graduate from), and my husband was fortunate to be able to be an adjunct and visiting professor at SUNY New Paltz.”

aste of New Paltz started in 1991 as an intimate affair, held at Rivendell Winery. Since then, it has morphed into a culinary showcase rivaling the Ulster County Fair in size. For locals, it gives a chance to meet and reconnect with friends. For out-of-towners, it showcases what New Paltz sells, the foods it offers — its wineries, artisanal cheeses and great local farms. Mostly, it’s fun. For community leaders in the college town, the 24 years the festival’s run has created some special memories. It’s part of the fabric of their lives. Back in 1991, Susan Zimet, the current town supervisor, hadn’t yet run for office. She’d moved to the area with her husband — drawn in by its proximity to New York City and the scenic beauty of the Shawangunk Ridge. “We started as weekenders. But like so many others, we chose to make this our permanent home and raise our children here,” she said. Zimet remembers back to the inaugural years of the Taste, something of a small gathering where people came to “enjoy the culinary delights of the local restaurants and spend the day with your neighbors.” Nearly a quarter-century later, the Taste is an institution. People expect it. “It has grown to a regional event with people visiting from outside the area, providing the opportunity for so many visitors to experience our great community,” she said. Part of what makes New Paltz irrepressible is that it is a small town “with a metropolitan flair.” The same could be said for nearby towns Gardiner and Rosendale, which both have vibrant artist communities and excellent shops.

what makes him passionate about his town. “New Paltz is where colonial roots and the counterculture collide. We are a community that prides itself in individualism and artistic expression,” Torres said. “I feel privileged to have grown up here.” The spirit and energy of New Paltz is distilled into the festival, he said. “Taste of New Paltz is an event that highlights many of things that make our community special,” said Torres, adding that it highlighted the “diversity and high quality of businesses we have.”

New Paltz Central School District Superintendant Maria Rice.

Over the years, Taste of New Paltz has also offered talented students a chance to play — as it did in 2006, when high school band Lemonade Grenade took the stage. Seeing her students play that year sticks with Rice. It’s a favorite memory for her. But she also sees Taste as a celebration of “the best cuisine in the Hudson Valley.”

A taste of what’s free Your Taste admission brings you a cornucopia of values By Frances Marion Platt

hough the headline attraction at Taste of New Paltz is always the enticing lineup of local restaurants, food and beverage vendors. Your entry fee gets you more than just a brightly colored wristband that serves as your Open, Sesame! to the gates of the Ulster County Fairgrounds. “The $10 price of admission includes six hours of fun,” says Taste co-chair Paty Lott, who runs the Gray Owl Gallery at Water Street Market. “There’s live entertainment, on our Taste stage - Dylan Doyle Band, The Jukebox Revolution as well as a Marital Arts demonstration by the New Paltz Karate Academy. It also includes the Kids’ Activity Tent, where there’s a variety of children’s activities scheduled.” The Art Education Department at SUNY New Paltz and the Student Chapter of NAEA will be on hand to “do an arts-and-crafts activity with the kids for the day.” Lott is especially excited about the event’s “science guy,” George Ruger from the Palladium Science Academy, who has been a big hit with the youngsters at Tastes past. “He’s really cool. He walks around and does experiments that kids are fascinated with,” Lott enthuses. “Kids just think he’s amazing.” The Pet Stop Pet Shop of the Mid-Valley 14 • Taste

Newburgh will be providing a pet tour starring “our store tortoises, Tillie and Rocky,” says Michelle Taylor from Pet Stop. Hailing from North Africa, these two impressive sulcata tortoises will be available for kids to visit and pet. “They’re over 100 pounds each, so there’s a big wow factor.” Your entry to the fairgrounds on Taste day also entitles you to participate in an ongoing free raffle for “exciting prizes from our various Taste of New Paltz exhibitors,” notes Paty Lott. “We have what we call the Great Giveaway. You get one entry form with your price of admission. There’s a giant tumbler that everyone’s name is put in, and that’s where it’s drawn from.” You’ll be asked to provide a phone number, so that you don’t have to be present at the time of the drawing to win. A list of Great Giveaway prizes was not yet available at presstime, but nearly all the businesses participating in Taste of New Paltz will have something to contribute. “That includes our food and beverage vendors, but it also includes vendors from the Antiques Expo, the Country Store, the Health and Wellness and Arts and Crafts tents, along with all our Business Expo clients, which are New Paltz Chamber of Commerce and non-Chamber members,” says

Lott. “During the six-hour event, we give away about 50 items at least, because we have more vendors than that, and it’s everything from gift certificates to actual product. “And then of course the experience you’re getting for admission, which we just think is fantastic, is obviously worth spotlighting: great local fare, which includes food, our beer and wine vendors; also this year we have cider vendors with us. Then we have almost every category of business that you can imagine. So you’re going to be able to meet local businesspeople who may have some product you’re interested in knowing more about, whether it’s one of our local wineries or it’s one of our local insurance companies. We run the gamut. So that’s what’s free!” The 24th annual Taste of New Paltz will be held on Sunday, September 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ulster County Fairgrounds on Libertyville Road in New Paltz. Admission is $10 on the day of the Taste, children under 12 are admitted free and $2 and $3“tastes”are offered at each of the food and beverage venues. For more information, visit www.NewPaltzChamber.org, call 255-0243, e-mail info@newpaltzchamber. org or visit the Chamber in person at 257 Main Street.
