Welcome to the Historic 27th Annual Taste of New Paltz

T

his is my favorite time of year. The golden hue of the sunshine paints the days in a warm glow. The heady scent of ripe apples hangs heavy in the air. The air is lighter with a warm breeze. Apple picking is in abundance, the leaves are starting to turn a hint of yellow and orange. A promise of the anticipated deep ambers and ruby reds to come. Welcome to fall in the Hudson Valley. This time of year holds a special excitement, steeped as a young child with anticipation starting school. That excitement still holds true today. The Hudson Valley is thriving with a bounty of goodness. The Taste of New Paltz is where it all comes together! Now in its 27th year, the Taste of New Paltz is a celebration of community, delicious food and lively entertainment. Our diverse business community showcases their talent from 3D printing and karate demonstrations to rock band school and fashion. The senses are alive with delicious food, exquisite wine, craft beer and cider. Enjoy a hay ride, rescue a dog, tap your toe to the beat of the sound. I invite you to connect with our businesses, try a new restaurant and return again to experience our beautiful region. I am honored to represent an agency that plays such a vital role in supporting and promoting the local economy. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the

Connecting Community and Business

A letter from the Ulster County Executive

W

elcome to the 27th Annual Taste of New Paltz hosted by the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce. This is a great venue to experience the Hudson Valley’s fine cuisine, agricultural displays, and visit with a variety of vendors while enjoying the entertainment throughout the day. Every year the Taste of New Paltz exceeds expectations, and in addition to offering an exquisite array of culinary fare, this family-friendly event is a great place to hear live music, view beautiful art, attend the business showcase, and enjoy the day. As County Executive, I am pleased to let you know that Ulster County’s new marketing campaign, Seek For Yourself, encourages visitors to seek out and create their own unique experiences in Ulster County, whether it is based in adventure, culinary, relaxation, history or a combi-

nation of them all. With that in mind, you are in the right place at the Taste of New Paltz, where you can sample some of the finest food and be verages from the region’s amazing restaurants, caterers, brew masters and wineries. The Taste of New Paltz would not be possible without the New Paltz Chamber of Commerce and the outstanding job they do fostering

valuable relationships between the business community and tourism, while strengthening civic and community interests for New Paltz and the Hudson Valley region. We are fortunate that the New Paltz Chamber of Commerce assists in attracting businesses to the area by creating and supporting the business environment, helping businesses to succeed, improving the local economy and the quality of life in the community. New Paltz encompasses a strong business community and we are proud that it continues to grow and be successful. We are delighted to have such a wonderful event in Ulster County and I have no doubt that this year’s event will be another huge success! Sincerely,

Michael P. Hein County Executive

Connecting Community and Business

The New Paltz way A tapestry of business, binding the community together By Terence P Ward

eing a new entrepreneur can be scary. Taking on the risks of running a small (and hopefully growing) business is not

easy. It entails having all the answers. There usually isn’t someone in the office next door who can help. In New Paltz, however, many business owners feel that they do have someone in the next office who’s on their side, whether

or not they work for the same company. There’s a collaborative culture in the New Paltz business community, a network that weaves small businesses together into a tapestry that’s stronger and more beautiful than the threads from which it is composed. Sheila Gilday recognized that cooperative spirit the first time she went to a chamber of commerce mixer. “Everyone was welcoming and supportive of entrepreneurs,” she recalled. She became more involved with the chamber, eventually becoming a director. She worked to move her marketing firm, Gilday Creative, to New Paltz from Kingston. “The mission and vision of the chamber fit right in” with her own values, said Gilday. Gilday Creative could be said to be adding value to the business community. Part of that value is giving back to the community, which Gilday does through the help of a new intern from SUNY New Paltz each semester. Under Gilday’s guidance, the intern works on marketing materials

for a local nonprofit with a budget is often too tight to afford professional help. This year, it’s the local chamber of commerce itself which is benefiting from those efforts, with the marketing work being focused on the Taste of New Paltz. Gilday joined forces with contractor Justin Bowe to find affordable space in the village, which is where she wanted her offices to be. Being part of a walkable community makes it easier for Gilday to tap into its pulse, that energy of collaboration which attracted her to New Paltz in

the first place. Gilday thinks the real value in sharing space with Bowe is in discovering ways that their businesses overlap. “We both build things,” she said. At that point of intersection, creative sparks can fly. Collaboration is at the heart of the success of One Epic Place, a co-working facility in the heart of the village run by Nicole Langlois and Julie Robbins. The two consider One Epic Place more a business incubator than a location with available office space. What they call “the

The kids are excited! Taste is a true family destination event By Roxanne Ferber f you missed your chance to experience the Taste of New Paltz last year like my family and I, have no fear as it returns again this year on Sunday September 17th! We were very disappointed to cancel our plans at the last minute due to some unplanned kid sickness. But we are hopeful this is our year! The biggest draw for us is the inexpensive day out as a family. You can’t beat the amount of kids activities and the

lineup of local musicians for just $5 per adult($3 if you buy tickets in advance) and kids under 12 are free. My kids look forward to any event that has face painting and a petting zoo. But this year they will be over the moon checking out the rescue pups available at the adoption tent. There may have been some chatter of adopting a furry love of our own recently. It will be a big challenge to resist bringing a new pet home with us. One of our biggest disap-

Our plan is to exhaust the kids with all the pony rides, hay rides and fun a kid could want; then taking our samples of local beer and cider to the main stage to listen to Paul Green’s School of Rock, and

New Paltz Rocks Phoenix of the Ashes. Nothing compares to the feeling of late summer in the Hudson Valley like being outside enjoying a tasty beverage and listening to some good music. In our pre-kid days there were rock concerts and brewery tours on the regular. Post-kids, outdoor events like this are as close as we can get to the old days without shelling out for pricey tickets and a babysitter.

Nothing excites me more than eating food I don’t have to cook except not having to clean the kitchen after a meal. This event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. so we can essentially feed the kids sample sized breakfast, lunch and dinner. And it will cost less than going out to a sit down restaurant. With two very picky eaters who live on mac and cheese and the occasional pizza, my prediction is they will

be ready for dessert after one $3 sample. Will they choose a traditional cupcake, or settle for the simplicity of a cider donut at the farmer’s market? Cheap eats for the kids leaves room in the budget for hubby and me to sample as many flavorful food options as we choose. My sources tell me there is some really great Mexican and Jamaican food to be found. I can’t wait to find either one and toss my paper napkin
