A Man You Don’t Meet Every Day

I lived in London in the early Nineties and during this time I became a huge fan of Shane MacGowan. Although his recent death was not unexpected I was still saddened when it happened. I had forgotten how much I liked his music. Quite a few of his songs are about his love of London and he was brilliant at capturing its beauty and brutality. Many of the songs reference specific places in the city and, back then, I often found myself seeking them out. When my wife and I got married twenty-plus years ago, the first song we danced to was A Rainy Night in Soho by The Pogues. In 1994 I had heard that he frequented a pub near King’s Cross Station called Filthy MacNasty’s. Of course, once I knew this I couldn’t resist calling in. On the evening I visited he was standing alone at the bar and myself and my brother ended up spending the next couple of hours in his company. I can’t recall that much of what was said but what I do remember is that he was really warm and charismatic - a man you don’t meet every day.

LIFE & TIMES

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

A PLACE TO FLOURISH

This month, Kathy reflects on the benefits of a garden space and the incredible work done by Horatio’s Garden Charity.

Last month I had the honour of taking part in a special Carol Concert in Hillsborough in support of Horatio’s Garden Charity. The charity was founded by Drs Olivia and David Chapple, whose son Horatio died in an accident in 2011 at the age of just 17. Horatio had volunteered at his local Spinal Treatment Centre during the school holidays and had the idea of creating an outdoor space to help patients recuperate. The first Horatio’s Garden opened in 2012 in Salisbury and, by the time you’re reading this, the 7th garden at Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast will be helping spinal injury patients (and lower-limb amputees in the adjoining centre), their families, friends and staff.

I first came to know the charity when I started hosting Gardeners’ Question Time on Radio 4 in 2019. One of our regular panellists, Bunny Guinness, designed their garden in the Midlands and a more recent recruit, Ashley Edwards, is head gardener at Horatio’s Garden London. I eventually got to meet Olivia and David, and was knocked for six by the story of Horatio and everything they have achieved in his name. To be able to turn the energy of grief and loss into a force that can change hundreds of people’s lives for the better is one of the most selfless and inspiring acts imaginable.

The site in Belfast is unrecognisable: what was once a concrete wasteland, where not even the most pernicious weed could flourish, is now a lush, calm oasis. Amid the thoughtful and imaginative planting are 20 different trees and 13,000 bulbs are almost all in the ground. The garden was created by the renowned designer Andy Sturgeon, a multiple-award-winner at Chelsea. Newly-appointed head gardener Matthew Lee was bursting with pride as he showed me around the beautiful and practical layout. Olivia herself visited the site many times to make sure every detail is perfect: there are raised beds with curved edges so that wheelchair users can get up close to work; the plants stimulate the senses with smell, touch and sound; the garden rooms where patients can have private time with family, friends and doctors are bright and comfortable with skylights for patients who are in beds.

“In forty years of medical practice,” writes the famous neurologist Oliver Sacks, “I have found only two types of non-pharmaceutical therapy to be vitally important for patients with chronic neurological diseases: music and gardens.”

A team of volunteers will work alongside Matthew to provide horticulture therapy and the aim is to have live music in the garden every single week of the year.

I’m sure many of you are well aware how much gardening and being out in nature can have a positive effect on our physical and

mental wellbeing. This was clearly evident in lockdown when many Gardeners Question Time listeners e-mailed to tell us that without being outside, putting their hands in the earth, digging, weeding, planting, planning, they simply wouldn’t have got through it. For spinal injury patients and lower-limb amputees, who are dealing with the most terrible trauma, having a specially designed garden to escape into is a lifeline. The charity’s own research shows that 98% of beneficiaries see an improvement in their wellbeing, with 88% reporting that the gardens have supported their mental and physical rehabilitation.

Life can change in a heartbeat. One minute you’re cycling home from work or jumping onto a surf board on holiday or lifting something heavy, the next you’re dealing with the devastating news that you may never walk again, or if you do, it’ll be a long, painful road to recovery. What a blessing to have a place like Horatio’s Garden here in Northern Ireland.

The garden costs tens of thousands of pounds a year to maintain so look out for public events, including guided tours, which will let you see for yourself the wonderful work that is going on there and support the charity.

The magnificent Culloden Estate was the venue for the Law Society of Northern Ireland’s annual dinner. Over 200 solicitors attended the dinner, including newly admitted solicitors, and guests enjoyed the opportunity to mingle with colleagues.

Guests heard speeches from the Society’s new president, Darren Toombs, and His Honour Judge Philip Gilpin, who reflected on the value of the legal profession to the community.

During his keynote address, the Society’s new president welcomed the newly admitted solicitors and outlined his passion for supporting those wishing to become solicitors in Northern Ireland. Representatives from the Society’s charity of the year, the ‘Boom Foundation’, also spoke about their work and the year ahead.

A MAGICAL EVENING AT TITANIC HOTEL

Titanic Hotel Belfast recently hosted a magical evening for 150 guests to herald in the festive season with elegance. On arrival, guests were greeted by the hotel’s General Manager Adrian McNally, wishing them a Merry Christmas. Guests enjoyed a welcome reception of festive canapés and mulled wine before moving to the Drawing Office which provided the perfect backdrop for the evening’s entertainment. Carols and Christmas songs were beautifully performed by the Ulster Consort choir with firm favourites like Jingle Bells reverberating around the wonderfully restored building. After the performance, guests were invited to visit the hotel’s lifesize gingerbread house which is resident in the Wolff Grill before leaving with a specially commissioned Nutcracker Christmas tree decoration.

LORD’S TAVERNERS CHRISTMAS LUNCH

In its 29th year, the annual Lord’s Taverners Christmas lunch at Belfast’s iconic Europa Hotel welcomed over 400 guests for an unforgettable event in support of the Lord’s Taverners charity. Attendees savoured a delectable lunch, indulged in free-flowing drinks, and enjoyed stellar entertainment from magician Rodd Hogg, West End talents from Peter Corry Productions, and the comedic genius, Shane Todd.

Beyond the first-class entertainment and ‘craic’, this milestone event marked a significant fundraising success for the Lord’s Taverners charity. The cause, dedicated to providing a sporting chance for marginalized and at-risk young people in the UK, resonated deeply with the attendees. The 29th annual gala at Europa Hotel seamlessly blended opulence, entertainment, and philanthropy, leaving an indelible mark on both the cause and the enduring spirit of giving.

INTERVIEW

50
January 2024

Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.

CENTRAL CASTING

Hotelier James McGinn has just made the UK’s top 25 in his profession and talks customer demands, Covid and a necessary trip to Paris, with Jane Hardy.

The greeting at Hasting Hotels’ Grand Central is impeccable. A cup of English breakfast tea appears almost magically, strong and to specification. My coat is taken and hung up, speedily yet with a relaxed air. As James McGinn (58) notes, a great hotel depends on the tone set by the hotelier. “Anybody can build a great hotel, it’s just bloody bricks, but it’s the hotelier and the experience he brings, providing that sense of a journey for the guest, that’s the key to success.”

Being a top hotelier is a kind of performance, we agree. And this is from the guy who has hosted the Clintons, at least twice, also the then Prince Charles and Camilla before they were crowned our new King and Queen. He reveals that the Presidential and Royal couple were both charming. “They talked to the staff, were interested and showed their appreciation.” Similarly, Hillary and Bill Clinton, when over to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday agreement, not only stayed at the Europa, again, but booked themselves and some friends into the restaurant. “They had photos taken with the team and were great.”

Interestingly, James McGinn started out acting and dancing. One of eleven children brought up in Omagh, he has said that his seven brothers played football while he followed a different path. “I did Irish dancing and acting. Later, I got into the National Youth Theatre in London and went with my great friend Joan.” Roles McGinn took on while training include serious parts but he also acted and sang the part of Gabriel, the youngest brother in the magnificent slice of musical theatre Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. When wearing his work costume of super-smart suit with double cuffs, expensive tie and matching handkerchief neatly tucked in his breast pocket, McGinn is also acting a bit. ”I act

a version of myself.” he says with a winning smile. Yet he insists the welcome at one of the Hastings’ six hotels must also be authentic. “I don’t want to put on, in the ‘have a nice day’ manner.”

There are four things McGinn teaches his staff –“acknowledge the guest, smile at them, get their name and do something to help”.

He admits that he is pleased to have made the UK’s top 25 in his profession. “I’m hardly a shrinking violet but am not someone who runs after awards. Yet it’s acknowledgement of hard work which is always welcome.” He isn’t wrong about the workload. As overall manager, McGinn is conscious of the health of the business all the time. “We’re open 24/7, twelve months a year, all the time. You can never switch off and say, ‘I’ll forget about the hotels for a week’.” Yet he talks warmly of a projected trip to Paris, a surprise Christmas present for his partner Joseph. They plan a fun schedule. “We’ll be staying at the Brasserie, in the Marais (an arty area in the city centre), will eat and drink well, go to Versailles for the first time which I’m looking forward to, and visit the Crazy Horse.” That’s a club near the Champs Elysees known for its scantily clad dancers, great cabaret routine and overpriced fizz.

As we enter 2024 he reflects on New Year’s resolutions. “I always aim to eat less, drink less and do more fitness, especially after indulging at Christmas –but it is safe to say I won’t keep any of them.”

In terms of the hotel experience that James McGinn enjoys, it is unsurprisingly top-end. He has stayed in the Savoy, London, although likes to put up at the Strand Hotel opposite in the famous street near Trafalgar Square. “They’ve done an amazing refurbishment and you can pop over to the Savoy’s American Bar without

51

paying their room price.” He likes the luxurious Georges V in Paris and recalls drinking cocktails in its legendary bar. When staying in somebody else’s hotel, McGinn has an eagle eye for the detail of their operations. “Yes, I look at everything, all the details, and bring anything back that’s worth doing.”

According to the hotelier, the meal that presents most challenges during the hotel day is breakfast. He explains the logistics: “Everybody wants to lie in, so they all arrive at ten.” Recently, in one of the weekends before Christmas when the Grand Central Hotel was catering for around 500 people with its 300-bed capacity full, there was a queuing issue. Demonstrating just why he has won an industry award, McGinn and his team organised entertainment and some food – “we gave out mince pies, got some music and explained we were dealing with unusual, pre-Christmas circumstances” – to entertain the crowd. It worked.

Apparently the acid test of a successful hotel breakfast is the orange juice. It must be squeezed and “have bits in”.

When things go wrong, and even in Hastings Hotels they occasionally do, James McGinn believes in the personal approach and owning the problem. “I tell staff these people have probably pre-paid for their room and aren’t looking for a discount. You have to own the problem, as they see it, apologise and aim for some action. I believe in meeting face-to-face rather than dealing with it in writing, otherwise you could end up gaslighting each other.”

McGinn remains an inveterate fan of the collection of hotels in his portfolio. He tells me that when he saw the Europa lit up for the festive season, he said to himself: “The old girl’s looking fine.” We discuss the fact different hotels have different personalities, and genders. So the Europa is female, the Culloden is male and the Grand Central is irredeemably masculine. “Daniel Craig, I think, male, a bit bad, and possibly a bit Hugh Grant.” Hugh Grant has stayed here, as it happens. He was not the most demanding celebrity McGinn has encountered. Asked about tough requests, or celebrity riders, McGinn reveals that the MTV Awards a few years ago brought the most headaches with requests for different waters and so on.

But the greatest challenge in the hospitality business was Covid. We discuss the pandemic and its aftermath. “The rules kept changing, two metres, one metre, family bubble in your room, no family bubble.” He says that it was hard to keep up and when lockdown came, the task of closing was very hard. “We had to close everything down, all the rules, and furlough staff, some of whom got second jobs so didn’t come back. We kept just enough pulse in the hotels so they kept going and could reopen.” Then it was deals to tempt customers back but now rooms are full and the Christmas business was booming

I’m hardly a shrinking violet but am not someone who runs after awards. Yet it’s acknowledgement of hard work which is always welcome.

chez Hastings. Something the firm did to consolidate was selling Slieve Donard in Newcastle. McGinn says now: “It made business sense and we’ve remained friendly with the people there. It’s good to see it doing well, like extended family.”

McGinn got into the business via study and has a couple of Master’s degrees that have proved useful. But the star of the TV reality show Hotel People learnt the trade with his late father, also James, running The Woodlander, their family restaurant and entertainment centre in Omagh. “It was a bit like an American diner with music and entertainment.”

He adds: “It went in ’94, then I worked in London and also America.” That acquired flair means when you enter a Hastings Hotel, you step into another world, of comfort and ease. A place, to coin a phrase, where everybody knows, or remembers, your name.

GIRL ABOUT TOWN

Hello January, I love you!

I absolutely love the start of each New Year! It’s the anticipation, the endless possibilities that come from wiping the slate clean and starting the year anew. However, it hasn’t always been this way. Like most, I used to apply relentless pressure on myself every January with a list of unrealistic New Year resolutions, each broken like Christmas baubles four weeks later! When I eventually learnt to step away from the NY resolution trap and simply embrace and be grateful for what I have, my entire attitude to every New Year has changed.

I still love to set personal goals, but in a much healthier, gentler way, and if the goal-setting posts change, that’s ok; part of the process and part of our personal development is simply the journey and what we learn along the way.

This January I’m going to finish off the Christmas chocolates, enjoy the last of the homemade mince-pie vodka (sounds awful, tastes delish!), count my many blessings and wish all our lovely readers a happy and healthy 2024!

To be, or not to be?

There’s no one that loves to see the latest fashion trends ahead more than I, but some simply leave me aghast and scratching my head. Two specific 2023 trends come to mind:

The under-pant trend

All the best known celebs have gone pantless at some point, including Kendall Jenner, Dua Lupa, Gwyneth Paltrow, even Heidi Klum. Whoever thought wearing

dad-pants was innovative or fashion forward? Clearly stylists with too much time on their hands and clients with too much money!

The panty-hose trend Firstly pantyhose must be one of the most unappealing names for a garment ever invented! But who decided wearing said pantyhose solo was ever a good look? Come on, people, really?

Good News for Tootsies !

Hooray! Say goodbye to achy feet, the modestlyelevated kitten heel mule is BIG in 2024! In fact, some of the best kitten heels for spring/summer 2024 barely qualify as heels at all, so short is the stub that protrudes from their soles. Enter the micro-kitten heel. For inspiration look no further that Zara.

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Treatment at Apex Clinic has been life changing

For 74-year-old retired Civil Servant Ronnie McAleese MBE, from Comber, life was a struggle. Lower back pain and leg pain was having a devastating impact on his life and his ability to walk was severely limited. Desperate to get some relief, he visited Apex Clinic, Belfast. Apex Clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment, called The Nelson Spinal Approach TM, in combination with manual techniques to his left ankle, cleared Ronnie’s pain and stiffness and has given him his enjoyment for life back.

Ronnie, when did your back and leg pain begin?

Over the last few years, I noticed that I was having difficulty walking, with severe lower back pain and leg pain. Simple things like stepping off a curb were difficult, I felt weak and off -balance; my walking distance was severely restricted.

How did the pain and limited mobility affect your life?

A real passion of mine in my retirement has been dog training. I have my own business, Patch Dog Training. Due to my pain and difficulty walking I was struggling to take my classes. I also compete in dog agility competitions, and I was the first person from Northern Ireland to represent Team GB in dog agility at the world championships. This is something I have always enjoyed but I was unable to continue with my dog agility training and competitions as you need to move quickly to guide the dog around the ring. I was unable to move as quickly as needed to get myself in the right place to direct my dog around the course. On a recent holiday with my wife, I found myself unable to keep up and I was always walking several paces behind her. I found this frustrating; I was always someone who had been fit and active. I started to think that I was never going to be able to do the things that I used to enjoy and I was worried that I would end up in a wheelchair.

What led you to Apex Clinic?

A good friend of mine recommended Apex Clinic to me when I was suffering quite badly one day during a training class. In the past I had tried other treatments, but I really wanted to get to the root cause of the problem and not just try to treat the symptoms. I booked an appointment at Apex Clinic and I was so impressed with my specialist physiotherapist, especially the time and genuine care given to me. My specialist physiotherapist discovered that severe stiffness of my left ankle was the primary cause of my poor walking pattern and was also triggering my lower back pain and leg pain. She worked on both my back and ankle joint and she was extremely determined to get me back to doing the things I enjoyed.

How has your life changed since having treatment?

Treatment at Apex Clinic has been life changing! Along with my physio sessions and the home exercises I have been given, I have been able to get back into my dog agility training. I am getting stronger and walking better and more confidently.

What advice would you offer someone suffering with back and leg pain or difficulty walking?

I would recommend Apex Clinic. I am glad I took the advice from my friend and booked myself in for an appointment. It is very

special to meet a team of people who really care about those who come to them for help. I was so pleased with my experience that I offered to do this interview in the hope that it will help others who are also suffering like I was.

To book an appointment at Apex Clinic, call 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

Travelling abroad for dental treatment:

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

An increasing number of people from this part of the world are travelling abroad to undertake lower-cost dental treatments which they could not otherwise afford at home. We have all, however, heard the warnings around the risks involved in availing of such services far from home. If you are thinking about going abroad for dental work, it is essential that you consider a range of factors other than just cost e.g. a clinic’s reputation with other overseas patients, the qualifications of the practitioners, your rights and protections in the country of treatment should something go wrong. Before committing to treatment, you must receive a fully costed treatment plan including information on any risks associated with the treatment and details of follow-up care.

Kreativ Dental Clinic in Budapest, Hungary has been treating patients from Ireland and around the world for over 20 years. Mary Flanagan, the clinic’s representative in Ireland, outlined that the clinic has an expert team of dental specialists offering high-quality care using state-of-the-art technology. They have a proven track record when it comes to patient safety and quality of treatment and, importantly, there is an after-care service in Ireland.

Planning for overseas treatment can take some time and effort but it is crucial that you get the right advice and support beforehand. Ideally, speak to someone who has travelled to the clinic before; Mary Flanagan of Kreativ Dental Clinic is a former patient herself and will happily share her experiences and answer any questions. The clinic offers a free consultation, including an OPG X-ray and a full breakdown of the treatment plan. It is then your decision if you wish to proceed with treatment or not.

For more information, contact Mary Flanagan who is the ROI and NI representative for Kreativ Dental Clinic.

Navigating 2024’s Health & Fitness Trends with The Movement Medic

Are you ready for your 2024 health and wellness journey? This month, we explore some of the top wellness trends to watch out for this year.

Hormonal health is gaining attention in 2024. Why is it becoming a focal point, and how can individuals take charge of their hormonal well-being?

The rise in interest is driven by the challenge of accessing medical professionals and a shift towards holistic well-being. Women are becoming increasingly aware that medication is not always the answer to these problems and are actively seeking solutions to everyday hormonal issues through lifestyle changes, stress management, and supplements. This trend signifies a growing awareness of the interconnectedness of our bodies and the crucial role hormonal well-being plays in overall health and quality of life.

Fatigue is a common issue post-holidays, especially during winter. How can individuals naturally boost their energy levels without relying on caffeine or sugary drinks?

Natural energy is the trend for 2024, emphasising rituals and ingredients over coffee and energy drinks. In a world where increased workload and digital overload cause us to feel tired constantly, raising our energy has never been more important. To boost energy naturally let’s take a holistic approach with a focus on adequate sleep, stress management, digital detox and incorporating energising foods like nuts, seeds and whole grains into your diet.

While yoga remains popular, what can we expect in terms of fitness trends for 2024, especially regarding high-impact training? Gentle fitness, like yoga, has its place, but 2024 will also see a growth in high-impact

training. It’s about finding a balance between low-impact and high-impact workouts for optimal muscle health. Incorporating strength training and HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) can contribute to a wellrounded fitness routine.

For anyone who wants to improve body composition, prevent conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis, and optimise blood sugar control, the significance of incorporating strength training cannot be overstated.

Remember, you don’t have to join a gym; there are lots of online programs that need only minimal equipment. This provides a flexible solution for those pressed for time or looking for convenient options to align with their busy schedules.

How does blood sugar affect mental well-being, and what quick strategies can people use in 2024 to keep it balanced for overall health?

Healthy blood sugar control is crucial for overall health. Dysregulated blood sugar can lead to various issues, from impaired immunity, anxiety, cravings, fluctuating energy levels, weight gain and brain fog. Impaired blood sugar regulation is associated with several common conditions including PCOS, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and even certain types of cancers.

Managing blood sugar and getting to the root of your issue is vital for both short and long-term health.

In 2024, we’ll see a proactive approach with supplements, targeted exercise, and nutritional solutions to manage blood sugar levels.

Why is there an increased focus on microbiome health, and how can individuals improve their gut health naturally?

The microbiome is vital in metabolic processes, hormone balance and immunity. Dysbiosis, an imbalance in bacterial composition, is at the root of many disorders.

Signs of an unhealthy gut can manifest in various ways, from digestive upset to weakened immune systems and even sleep disturbances.

To enhance your gut health, there are several simple yet effective steps you can take today:

Prebiotic Foods: Include prebiotic-rich foods in your diet, such as garlic, onions, bananas and asparagus. These help to feed and support the healthy bacteria in your gut.

Probiotic Foods: Introduce probioticrich foods like yoghurt, kefir or fermented vegetables into your diet. Alternatively, consider probiotic supplements for a concentrated source of beneficial bacteria.

Curcumin: Found in turmeric, curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce gut inflammation associated with digestive problems. Incorporate turmeric into your meals, rather than relying solely on supplements, for optimal benefits.

Supplements: Nurturing a healthy gut involves incorporating key supplements such as L-Glutamine, an essential amino acid that helps to strengthen the intestinal barrier. Berberine has metabolic and antimicrobial properties. Other key botanicals like grapefruit seed extract, clove, black garlic, and caprylic acid can also contribute to a healthy gut.

For help and support in navigating this year’s fitness trends, get in touch. Dr Kerry Aston can provide personalised solutions for your health, performance and longevity. At the Movement Medic, we use an integrative and holistic approach, offering expert advice to help you achieve optimal well-being.

Let 2024 be the year that you take control of your health, reclaim your vitality and achieve lasting wellness.

The Belfast Rheumatology Clinic

Joint, tendon and muscle pain or stiffness can be due to many different rheumatic conditions ranging from those that are mild and self-limiting to more serious inflammatory disorders. In many cases the earlier these conditions are diagnosed and treated the better the long-term outcome.

The Belfast Rheumatology Clinic has been established by a partnership of three Northern Ireland Consultant Rheumatologists: Dr Andrew Cairns, Dr Adrian Pendleton and Dr Gary Wright. It is the first clinic in Northern Ireland dedicated solely to the investigation, diagnosis and management of patients with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.

There are over 200 rheumatic disorders ranging from common musculoskeletal conditions such as tendonosis and bursitis (often related to work or sport) and arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and gout) to rare complex multi-system immune -

mediated disorders such as vasculitis and connective tissue disease.

The partners have over 30 years of combined clinical experience at consultant level in rheumatology, both in the National Health Service and the private sector.

The driving principal of the Belfast Rheumatology Clinic is to provide a centre of excellence for the diagnosis and management of patients with rheumatic disorders. All patients will have access to the skills of the multidisciplinary team of nurse specialists, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and podiatrist.

your hair and confidence like

and non-surgical hair loss treatments provided by an experienced surgeon with the focus of achieving a natural look. We are a surgical hair loss clinic in Ireland, owned and run by an Irish surgeon.

Meet Your Surgeon - Dr Kevin McDonald of Tir na nOg Clinic

Welcome to Tir na nOg Clinic, a family-run establishment specialising in hair transplant surgery. At the forefront of the clinic is Dr. Kevin McDonald, a highly skilled and dedicated surgeon with an unwavering commitment to his craft. Hailing from Baldoyle in Dublin, Dr. Kevin pursued his medical education at the University of Galway (then UCG), where he completed his studies in 1999. His expertise lies in cardiothoracic surgery, the field he delved into after graduating.

During his time in Galway, fate intervened, bringing Dr. Kevin together with his now-wife, Natasha, who was pursuing engineering studies at the same university. After obtaining his medical degree, Kevin initially embarked on his professional journey in the UK, where he and Natasha spent five transformative years. It was during this period that they tied the knot and started their family. In 2005, an opportunity arose in Dr. Kevin’s specialisation, beckoning him back to his beloved Ireland. Eager to return home, the family embraced this chance, leading Dr. Kevin to practice surgery at a number of prestigious hospitals, including the Mater Private and Blackrock Clinic, over the following decade.

However, the year 2014 proved to be a pivotal moment in Dr. Kevin’s career trajectory as an increasing fascination with hair transplant surgery took hold. Determined to explore this innovative field further, Dr. Kevin committed himself to extensive training, thus embarking on a transformative journey to become a hair transplant surgeon.

In 2015, driven by a resolute vision, Dr. Kevin made the bold decision to leave his position at Blackrock Clinic. With the support of his wife Natasha, he redirected his skills and expertise towards establishing Tir na nOg Clinic. Since its inception, Tir na nOg Clinic has flourished, catering to the needs of its clientele and relocating to its bespoke premises in 2016.

Dr. Kevin is not only a fountain of knowledge in his field but also a passionate advocate for his patients. Frequently asked why he chose to transition from major surgery to hair transplant surgery and running his own business, Dr. Kevin explains that his decision was multifaceted. From a logical standpoint, he recognised the declining demand for cardiac surgery due to the advent of cardiac stents, while hair transplant surgery has experienced a consistent surge in popularity. Additionally, the long hours and commute associated with his previous speciality were crucial factors that Dr. Kevin considered, given his dedication to his young family of five.

However, the heart-led aspect of his decision proved equally compelling. Dr. Kevin was motivated by empathy and a desire to alleviate the struggles of individuals battling hair loss. Often affecting relatively young individuals with their lives stretching ahead, the emotional toll of hair loss on their confidence and self-esteem struck a chord with Dr. Kevin. In his eyes, the value of helping these individuals is just as significant as providing care for those with heart conditions. Moreover, he enjoys the personal connections he establishes with his hair transplant patients, during consultations and where the patient is awake during treatment — an invaluable experience not possible with cardiac patients.

At Tir na nOg Clinic, you will find not only a skilled surgeon but also a compassionate professional dedicated to helping you achieve your desired results. Dr. Kevin’s commitment to his patients, his extensive knowledge, and his genuine care make him the ideal surgeon to guide you on your journey toward renewed confidence and a brighter future.

Late Night Art at Belfast Exposed

“that is what we strive to do with this exhibition and sale initiative, allowing anyone with a creative flair to share it with us, and the wider community.”

all works on display were also available for sale to

Pre-Christmas, the city of Belfast was teaming with things to see and do during the festive season. However, one of the highlights for me was a visit to Belfast Exposed. This leading photography organisation was buzzing with visitors when I attended in early December as part of ‘Late Night Art’ - a concept which sees galleries across the city open after hours on the first Thursday of the month. What made this session stand out was that it featured Belfast Exposed’s annual ‘Big Christmas Photo Sale’. This unique exhibition, which ran until 23 December, provides an opportunity for anyone with a passion for photography to have their work exhibited. And all works on display were also available for sale to members of the public.

In addition to providing a platform for new and emerging artists, commission from photography sales went to support Belfast Exposed’s Mental Health and Wellbeing programme, as well as Mitchell House School in east Belfast. Speaking of the exhibition, Deirdre Robb, CEO of Belfast Exposed, said: “This year we decided to expand our support to Mitchell House School as they do such amazing work with their students, particularly when it comes to enabling artistic expression. Of course, that is what we strive to do with this exhibition and sale initiative, allowing anyone with a creative flair to share it with us, and the wider community.”

Belfast Exposed was also showcasing another two impressive exhibitions during my visit: Beyond (which ran until 23rd December) and Seeing Through A Different Lens (which runs until 13th January). Beyond is an exhibition which gives audiences a chance to view a broad survey of work from one of Ireland’s major artists, Victor Sloan. Spanning his entire career, the exhibition features both Sloan’s trademark handmanipulated conceptual images and a range of his documentary photography and video pieces. Meanwhile, Seeing Through A Different Lens is a photography exhibition showcasing Belfast Exposed’s therapeutic photography programme. The artworks were developed by the participants to explore their emotions, narratives and perspectives through photography while focussing on supporting their self-expression and personal growth in a supportive environment.

With an emphasis on important and powerful exhibitions, Belfast Exposed rounded off 2023 on a high and cemented its position as one of my favourite galleries in Belfast.

‘Late Night Art’ showcasing Belfast Exposed’s ‘Big Photo Sale’ took place on 7th December.

REVIEW: Mary Peters - My Story

Lady Mary Peters, or Mary P, as she’s affectionately known, needs no introduction. Athlete, philanthropist and ambassador, Mary Peters put Northern Ireland on the map when she won a gold medal in the 1972 Munich Olympics. However, her story did not finish there. In this wonderful memoir, Mary Peters tells her story, with the help of sports journalist Jim Gracey.

The book, which is interspersed with glossy photographs of Mary’s milestones across the years, begins by detailing her family’s move from Liverpool to Northern Ireland when only a young girl. This new country very much became Mary’s home and when she began competing professionally, she represented Northern Ireland.

Encouraged by her father - who gifted a bag of sand on her 15t birthday to make a long jump pit - Mary’s athletic ambitions flourished from a tender age. However, it was when she met the inimitable Buster McShane that her prospects really took off. As well as honing her craft, Buster also helped Mary

become the fearless and driven woman she is today.

Mary Peters: My Story tells of the years of training that led to her making headlines by bringing a gold medal home from the Munich Olympics to the streets of Belfast, and how she was then celebrated in her adopted country, as well as targeted by terrorists. It is clear from this memoir just how fearless Mary Peters is; her Olympic win is a highlight of her story, but it’s not her whole story. Since her epic win, she has gone on to establish a track and a Trust that gives other rising sporting stars the chance to have the best start to their careers possible. In her words, this is her living legacy and it has meant that she has continued to keep Northern Ireland in the headlines for lots of positive reasons. She has also acted as an ambassador for her country in her role supporting the Royal family. As Lord-Lieutenant of Belfast and, later, Lady of the Garter, she has stood side by side with senior Royals and shown them what is so great about Northern Ireland.

Now in her 80s, Mary Peters is still a force to be reckoned with. The fire that pushed her to achieve so much still burns bright, as does her desire to help future generations. In this fascinating memoir, in which Mary’s personality and natural warmth radiates from the page, the reader gets to glimpse the motivations and courage of a strongwilled and generous sporting legend, in her own words. Highlighting the dedication she encompassed to be a professional athlete, the treatment of women in sport, and the barriers she broke down, time and again, this is a truly remarkable story of a truly remarkable woman.

Mary Peters: My Story, published by The Blackstaff Press, is on sale now.

WELLINGTON COLLEGE

ENGAGE - EDUCATE - EMPOWER

Wellington College is a co-educational grammar school situated in one of Belfast’s most attractive and accessible locations. The College is close to main arterial routes into and out of Belfast and its pupils benefit from dedicated transport services. Accommodated in first-class buildings, Wellington College offers superior facilities including sophisticated practice and recording rooms in the music department, state-of-the-art ICT facilities, a lecture theatre, fitness suite, tennis courts, sports hall and astro turf pitch.

Wellington College has a well-deserved reputation as a caring school with a strong pastoral and academic ethos. The most recent ETI Report (May 2022) found ‘the pupils courteous, polite and well-disposed to learning. They contribute well to the life of the school and the wider community. Their behaviour both in and out of the classroom is exemplary’. The report went on to say that ‘parents commented positively on the work of the school, communication between home and school, and the excellent pastoral care system’. The report concluded that Wellington College rated ‘Good’ in all aspects inspected from quality of provision for teaching and learning, leadership and management and governance.

The College emphasises individual fulfilment and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of education and holds high expectations of all pupils in terms of behaviour and school work. It aims to empower young people to achieve the best results of which they are capable. Whilst academic success remains a priority at Wellington College, it believes that all students should benefit from a broad range of extra curricular opportunities.

At Wellington, pupils are expected to take part in the full, rich and diverse life of the College. In music, pupils can join one of the choirs or singing groups, the concert band,

or one of the many instrumental ensembles. In sport they can participate in hockey, rugby, football, netball, athletics, badminton, tennis and golf, to name but a few. Other opportunities for extra curricular success include debating/public speaking, ICT club, art club, science club, chess club, the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, scripture union and baking club. In addition the College puts on a musical performance each year which allows a huge number of pupils to take part both onstage and backstage.

Wellington College wants every pupil’s experience to be exciting and inspirational. It takes every opportunity to broaden horizons and place learning in context. Pupils take part in trips, visits and courses in a range of local, national and international settings including sporting trips to Italy, language trips to France and Spain and the annual ski trip. The College believes that to prepare all pupils for the challenges they face in the future, its job is to present them with as many different situations as possible in which they can adapt, compete and develop into successful citizens of the future.

Sullivan Upper School is a nondenominational, voluntary grammar school. The school was founded in 1877 and, since 1939, has occupied extensive grounds on the edge of Holywood. The school’s aims remain very much as they originally were: to provide the best possible education for all pupils, regardless of race, gender, background or religious denomination.

Pupils come to Sullivan from a large catchment area, covering North Down, Ards and East Belfast. Sullivan Upper takes great pride in providing its pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum, supported by a muchpraised pastoral care system – truly living up to the school motto ‘lamh foisdineach an uachtar’ or ‘the gentle hand foremost’, a constant reminder of the virtue of gentleness in dealing with others. At Sullivan we believe that what goes on outside of the classroom is also very important. In order to ensure that all pupils are granted a well-rounded education in every aspect, the curriculum

is extended through a wide range of cocurricular and extracurricular activities, for example, in sports, music and drama. Pupils enjoy competing in a range of sports from rugby to fencing, from hockey to badminton and the arts also flourish at the school. Many pupils contribute to the school’s excellent instrumental and choral groups such as the band, jazz group and orchestra and there is a range of high-quality drama productions. We aim to broaden the horizons of our pupils with many exciting trips, both locally and overseas. We take great pride in the character that our pupils exhibit, and so community service and the support of a range of charities are important aspects of school life.

A dedicated team of teaching and nonteaching staff help each individual pupil develop his or her talents to the full and to prepare themselves effectively for the challenges and responsibilities of adult life.

Sullivan Upper School’s emphasis is strongly academic and we place a high value on academic achievement. The vast majority of pupils remain at school after GCSE to take A Level courses before heading off to universities at home or further afield, including Oxford and Cambridge. Sullivan Upper’s proud record of outstanding results in public examinations shows that all pupils are empowered to realise their potential.

ST LOUIS GRAMMAR SCHOOL, KILKEEL LIFE-LONG EXPERIENCES FOR ST. LOUIS STUDENTS

Nestled between the foothills of the majestic Mourne Mountains and the expanse of the Irish Sea, lies the fine academic institution - St. Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel. Founded in 1922 by the St. Louis Sisters, this co-educational grammar school celebrated its Centenary last year. A yearlong series of events to mark this milestone in the school’s history also provided an opportunity to reflect on the school’s contribution to the lives of so many young people throughout numerous generations.

St. Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel, is a coeducational Specialist School in Technology and Computing, that caters for students aged 11-18. With over 750 students on roll, the school includes a thriving Sixth Form offering pathways into a variety of careers, from preparing students for their university courses to preparing students to step immediately into the world of employment. St. Louis prides itself on its holistic approach to education with the needs of the students being central to its vision.

Over the years the school has adapted, evolved and grown in size. However, the ethos and charism remain the same and the high standards of education and pastoral care continue. The school takes great delight in hearing about former and current pupils reaching the highest standards academically and in other areas.

St Louis provides an education which challenges students to be the best they can, and academic success comes about through strong relationships between students, their parents and their teachers.

The school has a strong tradition of success associated with its promotion of Gaelic sports. Throughout its history, St.

Louis girls have experienced success on the Camogie fields, winning numerous Ulster School’s titles and even appearing in two All-Ireland schools’ finals. St. Louis girls also have experienced success in Ladies Gaelic football, securing an Ulster title in 2017. Boys’ Gaelic football has been promoted with an Ireland School’s title captured in 2004, as well as two appearances in the MacRory Cup finals in 2005 and 2006. Although numerous other Ulster titles have been secured over the years, St. Louis is proud of its contribution to Down football, providing a substantial number of players to wear the red and black. St. Louis students are also engaged in other sports, including hurling, athletics and golf.

St. Louis students are also challenged in other ways as the school is competitive in many extra-curricular academic challenges. The world of science and technology offers students opportunities to develop their skills and talents in this field. Involvement in competitions such as the BT Young Scientist of the Year, and more recently, the UK Quadcopter Challenge, have seen St. Louis students bask in success as they attained national recognition for their talents

and creativity. Numerous individual awards and scholarships have been secured by St. Louis students, exemplifying the excellent standards being promoted by the school.

St. Louis also offers a wide range of school trips which have provided enriched life experiences for generations. Recent school trips have seen students travel to Barcelona, Paris, Italy and New York.

St. Louis offers a broad and balanced education for all its students. With up to 20 GCSE/BTEC Level 2 courses and over 26 AS/A2/BTEC Level 3 courses to choose from, St. Louis can certainly cater for the needs of all who attend the school. As St. Louis celebrates its 100th birthday, its position as one of the top schools in Northern Ireland is certainly secured for generations to come.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

It is undeniable that extra curricular activities are beneficial for children. It allows them to develop a range of skills that can carry right through to their working adult lives. Sporting activities promote teamwork and dedication, while the likes of drama clubs enhance their social skills and confidence. Post-primary schools across Northern Ireland provide their students with an abundance of after-school activities to suit every child and their passions. Not forgetting, when students reach the end of their school life and want to move on to university, extra curricular activities provide precious UCAS points, which may help them get into their preferred university. As children leave primary school and enter into secondary education their commitment to clubs and activities can be tested, as they tend to stick with their select group of friends and don’t like to branch out. It is at this pre-teen stage that they should be encouraged by both the school and parents/ guardians to pursue their passions and not give up.

Positive relationships and respect are the driving forces for what we do well. The school is proud of our students’ successes; they do well academically, excel on the games field and stretch themselves in many different ways through the variety of activities on offer. They develop and explore their talents and interests.

The school gives an education that goes beyond academic excellence and all their other achievements. A St. Joseph’s College education provides the girls and boys with a spiritual compass to guide them through adult life.

Principal, Michele McCormick, said: “I am so proud and privileged to lead this school. It is an ideal setting to constantly create, innovate, think outside the box and achieve. We achieve excellence through our partnership between pupils, parents, staff and being a school for the whole community.”

INTEGRATED EDUCATION

CELEBRATING INTEGRATED EDUCATION

There is a sense that real momentum is building for Integrated Education. Gaining Integrated status for a school comes about by consensus and intention, not accident. Every year across Northern Ireland more parents and schools are saying ‘Integrated Education, we’re in.’

Pupil numbers have grown with almost 28,000 children currently being educated in 71 Integrated schools. Within the last year, several schools have successfully held parental ballots for Transformation and will seek Department of Education approval to become Integrated.

BACKGROUND

What is Integrated Education?

An Integrated school brings together pupils, staff and governors of different cultures and religious beliefs and those of no faith background, including reasonable numbers of both Protestants and Catholics. An Integrated school educates together those of different abilities and socio-economic backgrounds, it strives for inclusivity, celebrating religious and cultural diversity.

Integrated Education plays an important role in Northern Ireland, as the pupils learn with, from and about each other on a daily basis. This helps build a more shared society.

Why would my school consider becoming Integrated?

In Integrated schools, children of all backgrounds learn side by side every day in the same classroom.

Integrated Education has demonstrated that it can:

• Provide an excellent education

• Add value to a child’s educational experience

• Develop positive social attitudes and respect through daily interaction and relationship building

• Nurture and improve community relations among young people

Schools who have gone through the process of Transformation report many positive benefits, such as giving pupils opportunities to broaden their perspectives and to prepare for a more culturally diverse world.

How does a school move towards Transformation?

A school Board of Governors can make a decision to explore Transformation, this results in the parents of the school being asked if they want their child’s school to become Integrated. The Integrate My School website gives parents the opportunity to confidentially register that they would like their child’s school to consider transforming to Integrated status.

Parents’ Perspective

Why should I #ChooseIntegrated for my child?

‘To me integration means inclusivity and respect; these are things I want my children to learn and be around.’ Parent of a child at an Integrated Primary School

The Integrated Education Fund works to support the development and growth of Integrated Education in Northern Ireland through outreach, advocacy and providing grants.

If you would like to find out more about Integrated Education, then please contact us on 028 90 694099 or email info@integratemyschool.com.

Integrated Education encourages children and young people to recognise what they share in common, as well as what makes them different. It promotes the expression of different cultures and traditions while accepting and nurturing the individual.

A Parent-Led Movement

Every Integrated school has been built or Transformed to become Integrated because of the determination of parents. It is only with the will of a majority of parents that the road to Integration will begin. Any school can become Integrated, apart from hospital and special schools, and you can register support for your child’s school to explore this option at integratemyschool.com

LAGAN COLLEGE, BELFAST

NORTHERN IRELAND’S FUTURE

Lagan College is Northern Ireland’s first planned integrated school. We are also an inclusive, all-ability, co-educational, 11-18 school that meets the learning styles and needs of all children within the same family. We celebrate the diverse backgrounds and cultures of children from over 50 feeder primary schools, city and countryside-wide.

Founded by parents in 1981, our school promotes a strong integrated and inclusive ethos based on core values of respect, equality, reconciliation and service and we encourage our students and their families to embrace these values irrespective of Christian faith, other or none.

Our Pastoral Care team works together with our Chaplains and external agencies to support all students in terms of their wellbeing and care. We continually strive to educate our students in an environment not only where self-esteem and independence are developed as priorities, but also in a caring environment of respect for self and respect for others.

Lagan College continues to provide diverse opportunities and experiences for our students. Our students are encouraged to be ‘peacemakers’, and take an active role in service and leadership within our school environment via the Students Council, Mediation Team, Prefect Teams, student-led Eco Committee, or charitable work.

Lagan College is fortunate to be located in south Belfast, on a National Trust site of natural beauty, and to date, we have achieved 6 Green Flag Awards as well as holding the accolades of being an international ‘Cross of Nails’ Peace & Reconciliation School, a

‘Rights Respecting’ Community and an ICT award-winning learning hub. Learning, developing and growing up ‘together’ is at the heart of what we do. We celebrate effort, achievements and diversity and we offer a diverse range of courses designed to appeal to all styles of learners. Our students can choose from 53 GCSE and 29 A-Level courses, with 2023 outcomes representing the best in the history of the college, again showcasing the strong partnership between our students, our staff and our families.

We passionately believe we have something to offer every child. We focus on their strengths, interests, and talents - be that in music, drama, coding or those who enjoy public speaking, sport and STEM innovation. We pursue the ultimate goal of nurturing important personal qualities of self-belief, confidence and happiness in our students. We offer a range of learning opportunities and educational visits beyond the classroom, and our students can access over 40 different extra-curricular clubs.

We are extremely proud of our students and the varied pathways our alumni choose to take beyond Lagan College. We recognise the positive impact we can make, as an integrated school, on the future lives of children in our care, as they develop into young adults, intentionally ready to live within a shared and peaceful society.

Since our foundation in 1996, we have been striving to meet the needs of students who come from all faiths and traditions, backgrounds and academic abilities. We have grown from our first cohort of 84 students in 1996 to over 1000 today, reflecting the strong regard for Slemish by the local and wider community.

Our College Credo is ‘Learning Together for Individual Success’ and we are committed to excellence for every student entrusted to us.

Our success as a school is well documented, particularly for our focus on creative and innovative Teaching for Learning and our endeavours to build close partnerships with parents and families. The College has consistently achieved the top level of assessment in ETI Inspections. The quality of education has been further underlined by the number of teaching awards received by sta ; as well as being the first Northern Irish school to win the highest level of award from The European Foundation for Quality Management, alongside numerous other globally recognised awards.

Slemish College is a vibrant, forward thinking learning community with a wonderfully diverse family of learners.

We have the highest standards and expectations for our students, nurturing our gifted and talented, and fostering more practical strengths necessary for vocational careers. Students from Slemish progress to every occupation imaginable. Each year, our students are successful in gaining places on much sought after apprenticeships. Slemish consistently sends students to top Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Whether a child is highly academic, or more practical in skills and abilities, our aim is that they will be able to attain the best opportunities available to them.

Whatever their aims and aspirations, Slemish seeks to provide courses that will help students achieve their goals, and the College aims to develop the strengths inherent in each individual character. The credo sums up our belief that our school is truly about Learning Together for Individual Success.

Our hallmarks are strong teaching, and strong identity as a college community. This has ensured that for many, Slemish has been a natural choice for all in the family.

After 7 years with us, we want children to take away more than just a set of great results at GCSE and A Level. Our strong Christian ethos ensures that each and every member of our community develops a genuine sense of self-worth and respect for others - qualities that we hope will transcend the boundaries of the classroom to help shape a brighter, better future.

OUR VALUES MORE THAN JUST WORDS ON A WALL

The values were chosen not just through careful consultations with students, parents, sta and governors. They were chosen because they reflect all that we want the people of Slemish College to be.

We are proud that as an integrated school, our students have the opportunity to learn together. Students of the main faith traditions, and none, attend Slemish College. Integrated education is not about diluting faith traditions, it is about a rming and sharing them.

Additionally, we have the designated status of ‘bilateral’ which means that we are both a Grammar and All Ability School, providing pathways for students of all academic abilities.

35% of our annual intake is admitted through Grammar entry, and we are a host school for the new SEAG entrance assessment. The remaining 65% gain entry without any reference to academic ability. This ensures that we enrol a wide range of abilities and that we can provide excellence in curricular choice for all.

Primary School pupils and their parents are invited to attend our

BENEFITS OF INTEGRATED EDUCATION

Integrated education promotes equal opportunities and inclusivity for pupils of all abilities and backgrounds. The aim of integrated education is to provide an all-inclusive learning environment whilst encouraging diversity in a setting where students can learn, interact and grow together. Students from all different cultural, socio-economic and academic backgrounds learn side by side which enables them to gain an understanding and respect for one another’s differences. Integrated education helps develop a sense of belonging and acceptance for all and plays a vital role in helping prepare students for life after school where they are likely to be socialising in mixed environments whether it be in employment or further education.

WHY CHOOSE TO BOARD?

Ensuring you have all the information you need about boarding schools will help you decide if this is the right path for your child. Boarding schools offer a number of benefits, including encouraging independence, promoting social skills and freedom for creativity.

Independence

As children approach their teenage years they will naturally want to gain independence. Choosing to board for their post-primary education is a great way to nuture this independence. They will gain life-long skills that will benefit them later in life, while being under the guidance and supervision of trained mentors and pastoral staff.

Creating Friendships

The nature of being together 24/7 means the bonds made in boarding schools will last a lifetime. It also provides young people the opportunity to meet students from different walks of life as boarding schools are known to be very diverse.

Academic Excellence

Boarding schools typically offer smaller class sizes, allowing teaching staff to provide close attention to all their students. In a boarding setting students are supported with their homework and have constant access to educational facilities, such as libraries and IT rooms.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-curricular activities are a strong feature in boarding schools, helping students build for their CV in the future. The majority of boarding schools will have a number of on-site facilities, such as sports complexes, swimming pools, lecture theatres etc, where students can spend their spare time and flourish in their chosen hobby.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Alexandra College is an all-girls boarding and day school in Dublin, Ireland, that enrols students aged 3 to 19 in our preschool, Junior

and Senior Schools, with boarding students welcomed from age 10. With a Church of Ireland ethos, we welcome approximately 600 students to the Senior School from all across Ireland and internationally, of all faiths and none.

An Alex education goes beyond the classroom, equipping a girl with everything she needs to soar as a woman and preparing her for university and her career, while giving her a solid foundation for life.

All of our classes and activities are structured to help girls enjoy a challenge to do their best without pressure or anxiety. We

celebrate success and recognise the effort put in by our students; we are committed to the pursuit of excellence for all. Our students select from a list of approximately 27 subjects in the areas of language, science, maths, business, creative arts and social sciences. Our results are excellent: over the past five years our students have received A or B grades in two-thirds of all examinations taken. In the Irish Leaving Certificate more than 80% of exams are taken at Higher Level and our students obtain nearly 50% more points than the national average.

Boarding plays a central part in the life of the College, lending the school the energy, warmth and fun of a village community. One in five students at Alexandra College is a boarder. The boarders in “Res”, our boarding house, form a close, supportive group of girls from all over Ireland, Europe, and the world.

As our students go through periods of great change and development during the years they spend at Alex, our staff are very experienced at looking after and supporting their needs.

We provide counselling care, faith care, and the students themselves play a great part as role models and friends, providing a natural support network for each other.

We are always delighted to talk to parents and girls about what we have to offer across the academic, creative, music and sporting aspects of College life. To learn more about our programmes, please contact our Admissions team.

1. What do you love most about your job?

I’ve just launched Millar’s Grill & Seafood, a new restaurant in Lanyon Quay Belfast, with my partner Chris Millar. It’s been 18 months in the planning and what I’ve enjoyed most is creating two beautiful spaces - the main restaurant and a private room for up to 40 people. I’m hugely passionate about ensuring customer satisfaction. Chris and I eat out a lot and have pet peeves, so we really want to get it right.

2. What has been your career highlight to date?

Opening our two restaurants – Millar’s on the Upper Lisburn Road and our new venture, Millar’s Grill & Seafood. There is a real satisfaction in creating a unique offering and growing a business to a point where it’s winning awards. I also love meeting fascinating people through work and being nominated for awards.

3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work?

Work consumes me, but when I get the

chance, I like to travel, spend time with Chris and the dogs, and go shopping.

4. What is your daily routine?

I wake up, answer about a million calls, emails and texts, get the dogs sorted for the day and then spend about 10 hours working. I still find time to cook and always make a home-cooked meal at the end of the day.

5. Do you have a specific fitness regime?

We used to go to the gym several times a week and I was a regular jogger but now I’ll get my steps in at work and the dogs keep us active. I would love to get back to the gym but opening a new business is extremely time consuming...maybe in January.

6. Do you have any tips for staying positive?

I remember everything that my partner and I have achieved together and how far we’ve come as a business.

7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland?

Before meeting Chris and moving here, I

lived in Manchester, which is an amazing city but short on green space. I love being so close to the coast and the countryside now. You can be out of the city in no time.

8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by?

“Just get it done”. The hospitality industry is incredibly fast moving and at Millar’s Grill & Seafood, we’re big on efficiency, which is vital for ensuring a great customer experience.

9. Who has been your biggest influence?

My mum. She’s a single parent and the hardest worker I know. She’s always there for me and means everything. My aunt Aisling is also a role model. She has opened three successful restaurants and inspired me to become self-employed.

10. FAVOURITE

Movie: The Greatest Showman - it has an amazing soundtrack!

Band/musician: Taylor Swift. There was a point in my life where everything she released really resonated with me. I want her song, Lover, to be played during my first wedding dance.

Book: Can’t say that I have much time for reading right now.

Restaurant: Millar’s Grill & Seafood, of course! We offer premium steak and seafood at accessible prices in a beautiful central Belfast setting and champion the best of NI by using locally sourced produce.

Holiday Destination:

I don’t think I have one favourite destination. We started going on cruises last year and were lucky enough to visit the Caribbean. My favourite destination was Roatán, Honduras, the water was incredible!

Drink: I love a glass of champagne - it’s not just for celebrating! Also, nothing beats a hot chocolate when the weather gets cold. My Velvetiser gets a lot of use at this time of year.

Meal: One of our juicy 12oz fillet steaks, with blue cheese sauce and beer battered onion rings.
